    This is me

Hi my name is Leana. I am from Missouri and currently 267# and 5ft3in. I have been over weight my entire life but this is the heaviest I have ever been. My kids are 12, 11, and 10 so I can't even use that as an excuse for my weight anymore. I love food especially sweets and other carbs like breads. I've been an RN for 7 years so I know what I'm doing wrong I just don't have much will power. It's embarrassing to say I'm a nurse and yet I'm morbidly obese. I've just started my journey. I've met with my surgeon, dietitian, and councilor. I had a sleep study and attempting to cut out soda, alcohol, and drink more water. And of coarse exercise 30 min a day. Most of my family is over weight and don't think that surgery is the best option. I kind of feel alone at times with this, but I have made my decision. I am only 35 and allready have back issues that will require fusions in the future. I want to feel better physically and emotionally. I pray that I'm on the right track.
  2. And another thing I didn't even think about before my surgery - alcohol! I miss drinking ice cold beer!!!! I tried sipping wine, it was a tad painful, but I still wish I could drink more than just a few sips....

    Argument with NP over Coffee

It can be very confusing to know what to listen to and what not to listen to. Yes, we have the internet but it makes things even more confusing with all the different opinions. I guess that is why we trust our information will be helpful from the program that we are in. It too has been suggested that there is no alcohol, but I will make that decision when I see fit. We have the doctors and nurses to advise us, but I guess we are able to make our own choices, good or bad, on our own, for what we see fit . Any piece of information can be torn apart, analyzed or discredited. It is up to each of us to take charge of our health.

What I wish I knew before surgery?

I am a 21 year old girl who had the surgery 10/22/14. It is the best decision. I have ever made in my life and I would never ever take it back. So far I am 130 pounds down and I feel amazing. Some things I wish I knew? Well, I knew what would happen physically, there would be pain, less eating, weight loss, loose skin. On my clear liquid diet I was very week I could barely make it up the stairs and I passed out from trying, so we started my full liquids a couple of days earlier. That was the only thing physically that I wasn't expecting g was how week I would be from the liquid diet. What I wasn't prepared for was the mental issues. I wear a size 16 now and when I look in the mirror I still feel like I wear a size 30. It breaks my heart. Your self esteem grows but not as fast as you lose the weight and I wasn't expecting to feel like this. It's hard to see yourself as beautiful. I also struggle with losing my food addiction. And not putting it toward something else like shopping, alcohol, sex. It's been so rough mentally. Just know when you lose the weight it is good to have a good support group and you won't yourself immediatly but you will with time

    compliments that are not compliments....

This is the exact reason I have not. and will not tell anyone that I had WLS. I am not embarrassed at all, I actually proud that I made a decision to improve my life. I just hate the ignorance of people. I mean if I were an alcoholic and went to treatment, do you think people would be rude about it? No they would be supportive. Same isn't true for weight related issues and addictions to food. It's sad. I rather keep people guessing "what's she doing to look so fab"....really keep the gossip wheel turning.
  6. Alcohol is fine and won't hurt you but they are very high in calories. A bit occasionally is fine but u will it lose weight and will gain weight with too much alcohol. One margarita can have as much as 800 calories. That's a daily intake for most. So keep that in mind

    Argument with NP over Coffee

JFGI. Sorry, I couldn't resist saying that . The internet makes a wealth of information available to us with a click of a button. You will find arguments on both sides and each of us has to decide how much calculated risk we want to take. My bariatric program is ultra conservative. No coffee. No alcohol. Ever. For the rest of my life. Well guess what? I made a decision that I still wanted to enjoy a morning cup of coffee. Coffee didn't even appeal to me the first few months post surgery. I still find myself pouring a cup most mornings and only drinking half of it now 14 months post-op. I agree that the acidity is probably not good for me, so I don't entertain the idea of drinking more than one cup a day. What it does to my bowels is havoc alone, but that's a whole different topic of conversation ????. I think we all have to find a balance with what works for us - weighing the pros and the cons.
  8. I am 2 years post-op on RNY. I asked the question to my nutritionist "Why do people lose a lot of weight after surgery only to gain it back?" She said it is because they graze (snack). So I guess if I was going to give some advice to someone who is 7 years post-op, it would be 1) continue to follow the Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements of the program. 2) If you are going to graze, graze on protein and fats. Fats have the ability to stop hunger. Stay away from carb Snacks. Also stay away from processed sugars. I use imitation sweeteners like Splenda, low calorie natural sugars like Stevia and natural sugars (fruits and milk). When it comes to snacks I rely on Adkin's treats (sugar alcohol). I also make my own whipping cream using Splenda and place a heaping spoon of it on a cup of coffee each day. Its is a good way to add a little fat to my diet. I have lost 110 pounds and my weight has been very stable. In meals, keep a good balance between protein, carbs and fats.
  9. I don't really see why you can't have any alcohol ever, unless you know you are prone to addiction or something. I do agree that drinking it daily would be stupid, since it's empty calories. Soda has carbonation, which some believe can stretch the sleeve and I'm not willing to take that chance, so I avoid it 100% of the time. But I have had alcohol several times in the last 9 months. Maybe once a month or so once I was allowed. Just at social occasions and I'm very careful about it, because I have noticed I get drunk much faster post-sleeve, so absolutely NO driving the entire night, just to be on the safe side. I'm generally opposed to drinking my calories, but I don't see the harm in drinking in moderation on occasion. My program is very conservative and my team also said no alcohol ever. As already mentioned the cross addiction & empty calories being the main reasons. I hardly drank prior to surgery anyways so definitely not a sacrifice for me. Regarding the OP, if you were to honestly provide a journal of everything you are drinking & eating to your surgeon, what would he or she think?
  10. Thanks guys, this is definitely a change for me considering how I handled my brother's death. I spent over a year in a drunken stupor and gained 50 pounds. I figured I need a plan B this time around since none of the food or alcohol made me feel better anyways. I guess I've just resigned myself to the fact that I am going to feel this way no matter what. it takes all my willpower to just get up, go to work, and try to function when all I want to do is curl up and cry. (Actually had an anxiety attack, couldn't breathe and nearly passed out in the shower this morning). Continuing to visit and post on BP is one of my many attempts to try and be "normal". His wife has arranged for counseling for their son and both of us are looking at grief counseling for ourselves. I thought losing my brother was hard, but a suicide takes all this shit to a whole other level. For the first time in my life I've encountered a state of mental anguish that I just don't know how to begin to deal with. (Other than to keep cleaning....it's my new obsession!) Sorry for the hijack but Thanks for letting me rant.

    Goodbye to beer and pizza?

I'm not a drinker, but at three and half weeks after surgery I decided to try an O'Doul's non-alcoholic beer. This was about half an hour after having an 8 oz white bean Soup. I chewed the soup Beans so long and fastidiously it might as well have been pureed. Both went down easy. I can't wait until I can have a Guinness or a 'black and tan.' I'm not a drinker, but I do go out at least once or twice a month for a beer with friends.
  12. So I am scheduled for surgery this summer and about 4 weeks after surgery I am scheduled to have an informal reunion weekend with 4 of my closest college buddies. 2 of them are doctors and 2 of them are good friends of mine still and will know about surgery. What will I be able to do? I assume there will be alcohol involved and food and I am fine sitting there with a class of Water and a cup of Soup. Just hoping that the weekend isn't a disaster…. In terms of food I will have progressed past the pureed/soft stage at that point and be on to adding soft Proteins like diced chicken. My surgeon's office does things a little differently I think. Will I be comfortable sitting for a long time? Will I be up for a day of sightseeing? They are coming to my home town. Thoughts?
  13. In the last 18 weeks I have done very well. 60 lbs are gone for a 3.8lb a week loss.... What's to report? 1) A major milestone I passed under the 200lb mark today! 199.9! Starting weight was 258.0 Surgery weight was 252.8 58lb loss!!! 2) ..Nothing has made me sick since week 2 when I ate a little too fast and it made a slight return. I have had no stomach issues but have been eating a Protein rich diet, getting plenty of fluids, have not had soda or alcohol since the surgery either. I want to share though a little problem that came up this weekend. After a hot day in the sun I went to the fridge for a cold drink. There was beer, soda, and we had just run out of bottled Water. There was however some sweetened (strawberry) milk (ice cold)...so I poured a glass thinking....ahhh some protein too! .... the sugar in the milk made my stomach a little upset and I got very sleepy and light headed in my chair outside.....I actually fell asleep. About an hour later I felt fine... but then realized that with my sleeved stomach that sugary milk went right to my intestines. 3) Exercise at week 18 is effortless for this 51 year old....actually enjoyable. I recommend a fitbit or similar device and 10-12,000 steps a day. It's the only thing that keeps me from weight stalls. 4) next week I go to an all inclusive resort in Mexico.... I went on a cruise in march and actually lost 3 lbs. so maybe this will also work out

  15. Do you have any Phenergan? Your doctor may have prescribed it for nausea after your sleeve surgery. If you do, take some of that, you'll feel better. I am 1 year and 8 months out and the first time I had alcohol was at about 9 months and the second time was yesterday. I also feel nauseous, I took some Phenergan, and now I want a nap. You're probably just on an extended hangover since the alcohol moves a lot more quickly through your sleeve and into your small intestine than it does when you have a full stomach. Hope you feel better!

Do you talk to your Nutritionist?

I agree! Same goes with alcohol. Each drink is loaded with empty calories. My torture the poor pouch like that, and sabotage your success? Some foods are slippery slopes, but a lot think this surgery will fix everything. People still need to retrain the brain for success.
  17. I am so, so, so disappointed. I started this process last December. I had to go through the Psych Eval, the three - nearly four months, of seeing the dietician, support meetings, etc. Finally the letter came back from the insurance company that my surgery for RNY has been denied. I am 4' "11' and 185 pounds or so. My BMI over 35 and I have to have at least two co-morbidities. You name it, I have it. My body hates to be fat. I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy in my feet, fatty liver disease, repeated issues with UTI's because of my blood sugar, I am diabetic and I know my endocrinologist is going to make me go on insulin this week - it totally sucks. They denied me because my two years of weight history shows my BMI as under 35. I was on two different prescription weight loss pills that my Endocrinologist prescribed - of course my weight was down. However, I did not like how either of those pills made me feel. One made me feel too jittery, heart racing and unable to concentrate while the other one worked for awhile - it stopped working and made me way too lethargic. My GI doctor was the one who told me over 2.5 years ago, when my BMI wasn't quite 35, that if I did not take the weight off that in ten years I would be looking at cirrhosis of the liver, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. That is when my endo put me on the weight loss pills. AS usual, I gain it back. So while I am 2.5 years into my fatty liver and I am closer to the 10 year mark and my insurance company denies me. Anyway, any tips on appealing Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield?
  18. I am 12 weeks post op. My adult daughter and her fiancé came for a visit this weekend. We had a great time on Sunday visiting local wineries and a distillery of course tasting was involved. My question is since then every time I eat I get a bit nauseous and uncomfortable. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be concerned?
  19. I agree with all before on this thread --- really wish i had done this sooner in my life, but I had bad misperceptions about the bypass surgery and felt it would be a defeat. I am 5 weeks out, and very glad to have it done. I like the idea of what Kelli said...experiment with foods. Some people can handle different foods than others. My pouch can handle hot sauce, low fat pepper jack, refried Beans, V-8. My pouch rebels at anything with sugar alcohols, mustard, anything with fat except olive oil and avocados..... Good luck.

    Sugar free Popsicles n gum

Gum is not recommended by my surgeon because of the gassiness it can cause. Chewing gum almost always results in swallowing air. Most sugar free gums are sweetened with sugar alcohols rather than aspartame or Splenda and so on. Those can make you gassy too. Sugar free popsicles are ok on my plan, but sometimes cold fluids can make your pouch really hurt. We were told to stick with room temperature fluids to avoid that problem.

    Trying to stay positive

I agree! I am scheduled for June 15 and it amazes me the stupid stuff some people do and then blame it on the procedure. Someone was eating bacon days post-op and some were smoking and drinking alcohol. If you aren't willing to give those up then reconsider the surgery.
  22. I'm 17 months out and have been maintaining below goal for over 8 months. There is nothing complicated about my meal plan.....I simply eat a healthy, balanced diet of protein, fruits, veggies and whole grains. I don't measure, count track or buy special ingredients (except my protein powders). I'm single and don't really like to cook, so I do a lot of simple meals or whatever looks good in the grocery store deli. I eat a lot of soups and chili in the winter. I do still drink a large protein smoothie most days to make sure I'm getting enough protein. Yesterday.... Slice of turkey ham and 1 fried egg 2 large travel mugs of decaf coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 Carl's Jr. Single cheeseburger with tomato and onion wrapped in lettuce, no bun 20oz bottle Vitamin Water Seafood cocktail (fake crab meat with cocktail sauce) Mixed veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, zucchini) with Italian seasoning and parm cheese 1/4 apple with Peter Pan peanut butter Large cup of Sleepytime tea Chobani Greek Yogurt with Kashi Go Lean cereal Normal work day (I don't get a lunch break so there's lot of snacking all day)..... Decaf coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 Quest Bar or Kind whole grain bar Mixed nuts with craisins Homemade elk jerky 32 oz bottle of water Large Protein smoothie with fruit (banana, peaches or berries) and insoluble fiber supplement Protein for dinner (ham, beef, turkey, seafood, fish, whatever) Either a V8 or a couple servings of veggies, depending on how much room I have Greek yogurt Cup of tea And as for me, it's not necessarily about eating healthy 100% of the time, either. I have an alcoholic drink, candy, dessert, junk food, etc. several times a month. I pigged out over the holidays and then got back to basics afterwards. Just everything in moderation, like any "normal" thin person I know.
  23. So are you suggesting drinking wine last? @auntim0502 ... Now @ actlinton16 I wonder what people would say was the problem if your post mentioned all the problems except the wine? People are quick to blame the alcohol. Are bodies are all different. You will figure it out. Hang in there your scale will start to move down again.
  24. My Dr. said no alcohol ever. As unreasonable as it sounds, it's to avoid drinking your calories and my Nutrition Class talked about cross-addiction with alcohol. The strict no-no's were no alcohol, gum and soda. Not fun but it's for a reason. They want us having Protein first, then veggies, fruit and if there's room for carbs they are last.
  25. I work with a bunch of jerks who come to work sick and use their sick days for vacation. Now I've got this terrible cough happening. Can anyone recommend cough syrup or cough drops or cold medicine that are ok for us bypassed folks? Everything I have at home seems to have alcohol of some sort in it :-/
