    November sleevers

I think it's a good thinkgto be on the liquid diet. I was sleeved 2 days before you and don't think my gut would handle digesting anything but. I think our poor stomachs just need to heal. Even though I WANT to eat so bad! People told me that my taste would change....and yup it has. I normally, in a course of former tummy, drank 80-100 ozs of water a day. Now my new stomach doesn't even LIKE plain water. I get cramps. But I can have vitamin water. Go figure. I just dilute it half and half. This is what I'm doing to get around not being able to tolerate stuff in order to get in protein and liquids. For my meals, I sometimes have hot tea with unflavored protein. I bought Genpro from AMazon. Not cheap but gives 30 grams per scoop. I mix it with a little bit of water to thin paste consistancy then I add it to my hot tea. I will also do this with bone broth. Just make sure you mix it FIRST. I have Unjury unflavored but have not tried it yet. MOST people rave about the Unjury chicken soup flavored one. When I feel I need to "eat" vs drink, I will mix 1/4 cup 0 or 2% plain fage yogurt with a scoop of Inspire peanutbutter cup. I will add a tablespoon or so to thin it a bit. That gives me at least 26 grams protein. Hope some of these ideas help you.

    Yogurt

It's not silly, at least not in my opinion. I think if it were fresh strawberries it might be difficult to digest. But since strawberry yogurt doesn't usually have fresh strawberries it seems fine. At least it didn't cause me any issues.
  3. That the first three to six weeks are going to feel like forever. I had two weeks of full liquids (yogurt, soup, shakes) right after surgery then two weeks of purees (ricotta bake, tuna salad, chicken salad) and then finally to soft foods. Can i tell you I never thought a scrambled egg would taste so good. Get moving and cleared for exercise as soon as you are able. it will make recovery so much easier.

    RNY November 2017

I was allowed three shakes and three additions (yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, and fat free sugar free pudding and all the jello I️ wanted) it was hard but I made it. It wasn’t easy but it’s doable! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

    November sleevers here

YES! Right inbetween my breasts. It's like my stomach is seizing up. We all think our stomach is the middle of our body but it's actually up higher. It does that when I've gone a long time without drinking protein (what I call eating LOL) or liquids. Like middle of the night when you've been sleeping 5 hours. A few nights I actually got up and took some sips of protein drink or had some yogurt. My nurse told me not to do that. But jeez...there have been times in my life before surgery where I have been STARVING during the night and couldn't sleep till I had a yogurt or oatmeal or toast or something. I feel it's no different.

    Yogurt

One of my staples is Icelandic Plain Yogurt from Trader Joe's. It has 22 grams of protein per container and not much sugar. I add canned fruits, like peaches mashed up or applesauce. Before surgery I was adding blueberries & strawberries. My diet doesn't allow fresh fruits or veggies for the first month post op. I guess it's had to digest without it being canned or cooked.

    Describe your liquid diet?

My liquid diet for pre op was 2 unjury protien shakes that had 1% milk and 2 unjury shakes that were with water such as crystal light or there is a chicken flavor. Also sugar free yogurt and puddings and oatmeal in the morning. If I got all my protein for the day I was able to eat certain raw veggies and use fage as a dip and use Mrs dash for seasoning . Hope this eas helpful Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app

Pre op Liquid diet SOOOO hard

I am only allowed broth, protein shakes, liquids I can see through and 1 Greek yogurt per day. It has been rough but mostly with fighting the head hunger. I desperately want a cookie, a grape or Chinese food but I am not hungry I just want them. I haven’t given in because I know that this is what is best for me and that I only want those because I can’t have them. Today starts day 3 and I am down 5 lbs already. I notice that the days I have school (went back to college) I am ok but my days off are torture. Today I’m off so I plan to fill my spare time with homework and either a trip to the gym or a workout video at home. So far so good. That is great that you are feeling a difference clothing wise, congratulations you are doing great [emoji16]. We will all do great and get healthier together [emoji1360] Have a great day! Yogurt

I've had both yogurt and cottage cheese with strawberries and had no problems. I think you'll be fine.
  10. Tuesday Menu-Well I had another near miss with falling off the diet train yesterday. I credit the power of a full belly via lunch, and also credit mindfulness with keeping me sane and eating healthy-on plan food. Instead of having a mini binge or rather a hedonistic meal, I was able to feed myself a very filling and healthy lunch which allowed me to really get in touch with my feelings so I could process them. And that allowed me to make and eat a very delish, simple, and healthy dinner rather than shoving carby, salty, fatty food down my piehole. This morning I woke up in a much better frame of mind and feel like I "won the day." B-yogurt/cottage cheese blueberries almonds and Fiber One cereal bowl with 1oz Fairlife skim milk, 2 pieces bacon MS-carrots and hummus L-Fried Egg and Swiss low carb wrap AS-psylli tea, peanut butter and GS apple D-blackened tilapia, green beans in garlic and olive oil, Greek salad with Nicoise olives and feta BS-pomegranate seeds, Lily's SF dark chocolate chips, toasted almonds Daily Totals: 1493cals; 98g protein; 80g fat; 93g carbs; 39g fiber; 54g net carbs (Dayum! I have GOT to get my protein down and my fat up! This is entirely too much protein for me.)

    November sleevers

I was sleeved 11/8 and I am on only full liquids until 11/29. I cannot wait to get on puree foods. Other than broths, teas, waters, protein shakes, Vitamin water, jello, popsicles, about the only thing I can have right now with any substance is yogurt and I take full advantage of that. I'm not sure if they took enough of the grehlin part of my stomache out. Cuz I get mighty hungry and it's not head hunger (have that alot too) but true my gut flipping around hunger. So I will take a scoop of protein mix and swirl it into 1/4 cup of yogurt with some water to thin and eat that to feel like I'm eating something! My next step is puree foods then soft foods. Soft foods are scrambled eggs n cheese, soft fishes, tender chicken, yogurt, cottage cheese, RICOTTA BAKE I can't wait to eat that! LOL! good luck

    Yogurt

If yogurt with strawberries freak you out. Consider eating a yogurt without strawberries?
  13. I attended my last pre-op MD visit and pre op visit today which included a class on the pre and post op diet. I was expecting something way tougher based on my reading here. What I received was: PreOp: Starting 2 weeks prior to surgery date, daily diet is: -3x Nectar or Unjury protein shake -1/2 cup oatmeal or cream of wheat -1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce -1 cup of vegetables -1/2 cup of light n fit or carb master yogurt -1 cup of low fat soup This is not an "or" list, but rather I'm supposed to eat everything on that list daily on the 2 week pre op diet. -1 day prior to surgery = clear liquids only. Curious as to why different surgeons have such drastically different requirements for the pre op diet? Also of note, for post op, they only have you on clear liquids for the first 2 days, then full liquids and purees from day 3-20, soft foods (meaning can be cut with a fork) from week 3-6, then all normal food after 6 weeks with the exception of bread/rice/pasta, which cannot have until 12 weeks.
  14. If sweet drinks aren't your cup of tea, then don't waste your money. Unflavored Unjury and Isopure brands were fantastic. You can mix them into just about any drink, but my favorite was to mix it into decaf unsweetened iced tea. It helped me a lot through the early months. Plus, you can mix it into yogurt, cottage cheese, etc if you need to add a boost to your protein.

    Yogurt

I need help this might be silly but I’m cleared to have yogurt and I read a lot of people here don’t eat strawberries because of the little seeds getting stuck in the staples causing a leak my yogurt has strawberries in it and I’m kinda freaking out here

    November sleevers

@TINK09 I'm on full liquids. I can have the protein drinks and yogurt and anything from the clears, which I really enjoy. And I also can have coffee... but only 12 oz a day.

I'm still on full liquids until the 23rd. So I'm still eating jello, soup, popsicles, protein drinks, yogurt, and of course water.

Need Advice/help 4 months post op

Oh Shereen!! So sorry you are in dire straits. You need to get in touch with your surgeon. How come you are not drinking? Is water an issue going down? Try warm tea or hot chocolate protein drink. Do you have too much restriction? Nausea? It could be a stricture keeping you from getting food down. What about greek yogurt or cottage cheese? Your kidneys will shut down if you don't drink.

    4 Week Post-Op Liquid Diet

Even though you are feeling great, your stomach won't be healed for 8 or 9 weeks. 4 weeks is longer than most, but mine wasn't that far off. For me it was a week of clear liquids, a week of full liquids, then a week of thin yogurt (pour off the spoon), then a week of thicker (sit on the spoon). So, although that last week I couldn't have sipped through a straw, it was still just yogurt, cottage cheese, and things like that. Just take it day by day, and one day it'll all be ancient history

I'm 3 days post op on the lap band

Welp, I'm on the other side of the dreaded surgery. Not too bad, really! The worst part was my shoulders aching due to them filling my belly with air for the surgery, and the air bubbles migrating to my shoulders. The actual wounds never hurt much beyond day 2. I haven't taken pain meds since day 2 post op. I do feel mightily bloated, but that's just uncomfortable - not painful, per se. I've been eating liquids only. Soups, home-made smoothies, yogurt, jello, pudding, popsicles. Really it's been mainly smoothies in the morning and soup the remainder of the day with an applesauce or jello thrown in. I'M HUNGRY!!! Doc says not to deprive myself, but I feel like I'm eating more often than I was. I'm hopeful that I'm losing weight during this time period, though. Today I plugged in the old Fit Bit to charge it and re-set my goals. Time to get moving a bit! I'm also finding some time to organize my clutter a bit, so my mind is more clear, too. It's not too much - mostly re-arranging things since our move to a smaller home 8 months ago. I visit the doc tomorrow for my post op. It's my hope he'll give me a fill then and I can start on solids! I'm tired of liquids, and tired of being hungry! The bandages over my wounds are scratching me to hell. I think I'm allergic. I have an area where the corner of one bandage was where the skin is gone. I've got a call into the doc to ask if I can take the waterproof covers off the steri stips. Then I think I'll be a bit more comfortable. So far, so good!

Just had the ESG as well

Well, since I started this thread, I'll bite. It's been about 8 weeks since I had the procedure. During weeks 1-7, I chose to stick to the liquid only diet - which in my case consisted of only protein shakes (specifically I drank only Beverly International UMP and MTS Machine Whey protein - in other words very high quality and great tasting protein) 3 times per day. Occasionally, I would have about a cup of chicken broth or sugar free jello (the cups they sell pre-made and refrigerated in the grocery store). The first week was easy and the second week was difficult. The third through seventh weeks were very easy and I really enjoyed it (so much so that I continued past the 4th week until week 7). I found that I had a ton of energy and felt the best I've felt in years. Ironically, I spent a lot of my free time watching cooking shows and learning some new recipes. My wife thought it was torture, but it actually seemed to keep me focused on not eating with a goal of cooking more high quality meals after I was done with the liquid phase. I started walking a lot by the second week (some on my treadmill at a medium speed but a steep incline - some outside) for about 30 - 50 minutes at a time - including some targeted running at the end of the walk (High Intensity). I walked 5 times a week and found other things to do to keep my mind occupied when I wasn't at work. After 30 days, I began lifting weights - for about 90 minutes at a stretch. It's been a while since I lifted weights so I was VERY sore. This means that I've only lifted twice a week since that point - which is fine with me. Last week I began eating again - not very much and mostly soft foods like eggs and yogurt. I also went out of town to a friend's retirement which found me drinking some liquor (mostly cranberry juice and vodka) and going out to eat. In all honesty, I couldn't eat much of anything (even though I wanted to) and I took some protein shakes with to drink. Over this past weekend, I spent a lot of time cooking some healthy meals but didn't really feel like eating too much. I really enjoy spending a ton of time in the kitchen cooking (some of the meals I made took 4-5 hours) and not caring about eating. So far, I have had a pretty good variety of foods (albeit very small portions) including all types of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and small amounts of grains/breads. I have had no trouble tolerating any of the foods (except a bit of meatloaf I had last night that just didn't sit well) but my portion sizes are a fifth of what I used to eat - and I'm only eating food for dinner. During the day, I am sticking with protein shakes - for now. If I were to guess, I would say that I have been between 600 and 800 calories per day since the procedure. Every once in a while, I get a little lighted headed when I stand up - but not often. I have enough energy to work out and drink tons of water. I just started drinking coffee again this week - but not first thing in the morning - that's when I have a protein shake. As far as weight loss goes - I don't know my number. When I started this program, I promised myself a few things: The number on the scale would never be a part of what success was for me. I've spent the greater part of my life worried about that number and my past behaviors got me to this point - so they need to change. No more weighing myself. My goal was, and continues to be, to feel good each day. It's that simple. When I go to bed at night, I want to feel good with where I am - and how I spent my day. So far, I have succeeded and feel better than I have in 20 years. I started off at 267 (5'10") and I can tell you, without a doubt, I have lost a ton of weight. My pants went from a tight 45 to 40 and I can fit easily in XL from a tight XXL. I have no doubt that I have dropped 40 or more pounds and even started toning up. I wouldn't be surprised if I weigh below 200 by my 6 month appointment in March - when I will have my next official weigh-in. It's coming off that quick. Having this procedure is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I am planning on spending the winter lifting and losing so I can continue long distance running in the spring - in the hopes of running a marathon by next fall. I have begun investigating hiking and backpacking throughout the US and am committed to being healthy. What's amazing, is that after the second week, it has been pretty darn easy. I have no real restrictions now - and have absolutely no side effects (other than massive fat shredding). To sum it up - if you just had the procedure or are having it soon - here is the best advice I can give you: Buy and drink the highest quality protein you can afford. I buy mine from Tiger Fitness - as they are the cheapest with the quickest shipping. The protein costs a fraction of what I used to spend on food - so I would recommend you avoid muscle milk and anything you can find at Walmart or your local grocery store. Buy what athletes and nutrition experts buy. The cookies and cream from MTS nutrition will blow your mind. Don't run from food - embrace your new lifestyle and focus on enjoying every bite you take. Just keep the portions small. If your doctor approves and you feel good, stick with the protein shakes as long as you can. The amount of weight I dropped during this phase is phenomenal. I intend to use protein shakes as a supplement for the rest of my life - including occasional protein shake fasts. When you are on a protein/liquid only diet, take time each day to reflect on where you are at and where you want to be. Call it meditation or whatever you want - but think about your thoughts. It will make your will stronger and you will eventually regain lost confidence and be capable of anything. Daily victories begin to snowball. If you can, don't weigh yourself. At least not frequently. Nothing good can come from it and it is a horrible indication of your health. Trust your feelings and instincts. If you feel good - then you are moving in the right direction. Good Luck and enjoy the journey.

    Calling all October sleevers!!

Thanks Sosewsue, I wish I did not hate all types of yogurt, but I do. I think I will stick with protein shakes, soft boiled eggs, cream or wheat (I might sprinkle some unflavored protein powder in it) and soup for now. No need to rush things and feel gross. Thanks for your response!!
  24. @dzelaya90 3 week surgiversary - you are still a virgin!! people will not feel ANY restriction while they are on liquids. liquids pass right thru you. yogurt is a "slider", easy to eat, can eat lots without a prob. (not true for everyone, but for me it is) you can eat yogurt though. stop when you are supposed to stop. cookies, candies, popcorn, chips are also easy to go down, and you won't feel any restriction. so these foods are a sad "no no"!! if you have a meal, and you still are feel hungry - KNOCK IT OFF!! LOL amount you are allowed (even if you feel you could eat more - ) don't do it. People have been shot for less!! LOL there is a saying in WLS land - JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD!! Ignore the head hunger (easier said than done) you should/need to measure and ONLY eat the allotted amount per NUT. (nutritionist) Not losing weight for one, two weeks is not an "official" stall. 3+ weeks is a stall . most people do stall during weight loss. stop worrying (you'll give yourself grey hairs/headaches) down 17 lbs - that's great. you are doing fine. good luck kathy
  25. Are any/all of you on acid reflux medication? A lot of veterans swear that this hunger is actually acid reflux and you need meds/ different meds/ increase in meds. Restriction happens with dense protein, if it is always eaten first and no more than 4oz at a time, then vegetables, then whatever else is allowed. Soup, yogurt, tuna are all soft or semi-liquid and will not feel restricted. I feel restriction with chicken thigh meat and grilled salmon - that is the only thing I have consumed so far that is fairly dense. I feel no restriction with refried beans or soups or tuna - unless I were to eat an actual tuna steak maybe.
