  1. Wow you lost that very quick! I think time will help heal that lousy self image some. But the fact of matter is we all need to work on self love through this journey. We need to love our imperfect selves. something I think a lot of us didn't do in the past, and possibly lead us to the weight gain.. Love your imperfect self take joy in moving, breathing easier and Celebrate the journey that you are on

    MONTHLY CHALLENGE Awesome august banders!

donna450/donna Goal fo 9-30: 185 Todays wt: 187 Goal for10-31: My fill date is wed also first one but not sure it will happen. I'm having too much trouble getting all my pills down and eating. Or just have trouble getting most foods down. So we'll see what the dr says. Not losing too fast either but several weight gaining pills. Good luck to everyone.
  3. I was sleeved on September 10 pre op I was 293 and post op I was 273. Last week I I was 264 and my current weight is 270. Is it normal to gain weight back even when sticking to the diet? I'm feeling really discourage right now and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong.
  4. Going out on a limb here and am scared at the same time. I was diagnosed in '07 as being bipolar, mild, not severe and given a cocktail of meds, along with this disease I suffer from severe insomnia so mostly my symptoms are that along with mild depression. I take Klonopin, Saphris and Zonisamide. All has been going great and no I don't have manic episodes everything was going great up until about a month ago I noticed my moods have changed. As some of you know I live with my mom since my divorce and well I have a tendancy to lash out at her, she knows I don't mean it and she understands completely and I'm even lashing out at my dog. I called my psych the other day and called in Depakote and the pharmacist said, do you know the side effects of this drug of course I said no, she proceeded to tell me that it caused hair loss which after lap band I am experiencing now, severe weight gain and I'm thinking great. Why in the world would my psych of 7 yrs put me on a drug that makes me gain weight? I guess I am jumping out here in hopes that someone with this disease will respond and tell me what they take and if they have any adverse effects from the meds they take. It's obvious I need a mood stabilizer but from all my research they all seem to have side effect of weight gain. I have been on my cocktail of drugs for quite some time and don't know if they have stopped working or what. Someone please have some answers. thanks...Donna

    How about some NSVs!?!?

I'm in a 16 pants and a large top. I'm 5' tall and 54 yrs old. I say my age because that is probably the reason my boobs deflated as I lose weight. That and I breast-fed three children. As a short person a size 16 is still pretty big but my stomach is also a factor in my pants size. Even if I get a lot smaller my stomach will always make me a size bigger than I should be (it's stretched out from the twins and then my 10.5 lb son - the weight gain came over the years). Someday I might try to get the skin removed but that won't be for several years yet, if ever. I need to be at a stable weight for a year or two and I need to have a history of infections in my stomach area before insurance will consider paying for it.

    Let her eat cake

You did say sugar free cake. That is interesting. The sugar in most wedding cakes does make people sick because the stomach and intestines are not used to all that sugar, potentially leading to the dumping syndrome. It would make me sick. the last time i have eaten sugar outside the sugar found in protein shakes and bars (usually 1-3 g) has been april 2012. I do not miss it. If you like sugar free cake and it does not cause you any issues (dumping, weight gain, etc), I say eat it. Be reasonable though. Try and stick to a single small piece.
  7. Hello sleevers! I'm in the same situation with the weight coming off, but I feel different now! I feel hope!! I too see the change in pictures, Thank God I took those before pictures as bad as they were. I was sleeved 8/21, actually I am a revision from band to sleeve and was told to expect slower weight gain, but I refuse to! I am a winner no matter what it looks like! I expect my body to line up, and not to control me. A positive mind set does help!!! Stick with the proteins and move, it has to come off!

    Discouraged

If I was honest , then I would admit that it is the weight gain fear that is making me keep a soft diet. I started eating more normal food yesterday and today. Have not stepped on a scale but I am worried. Can you share what a normal day food intake is for you?
  9. Hi y'all, I am only two months out but have already had to deal with a two week period of not losing an ounce and a few days of actually gaining 3 pounds. From my own (still quite early) experience I think we need to be careful about what "gaining" weight means. I think we will all have small fluctuations. I think a true weight gain is an increase in weight that does not go away even after time (hmmm, how much time? I am not sure) has past. I suspect we all had weight fluctuations before surgery. The sleeve is a procedure not a magic wand. Life's old rules still apply (pre-menstral blot, constipation, water retention after a high salt meal, etc. etc). These were cause for temporary weight gains for me in the past. I suspect they will be for me still.

Gained after starting a new routine!

Kettle bells are pretty awesome at creating muscle. Keep it up! I would not be too concerned about weight gain after strength training. It always happens. I bet your clothes are fitting better and weight will begin to drop again soon.
  12. I had a conversation yesterday with my OB about this same thing. I expressed to her that I had difficulty losing weight. She told me that 60-70% of her Mirena patients reported the same thing. Not so much of a problem with weight gain, but problems losing with a Mirena. I then told her that I was having WLS, without hesitation she said I should have my Mirena taken out and possibly consider tubal ligation or esure. She also suggested ablation to resolve my issue of heavy cycles. My nutritionist said the same thing - that my Mirena could possibly slow down my loss. I am having it removed. She also indicated that the Mirena was maybe only one factor of many (middle age, insulin resistance, etc.) that was causing me difficulty with losing weight. I'm sure this form of b/c effects everyone differently. I am pre-op, planning a December surgery.

    Mirena Coil slow weight loss?

My experience with my Mirena is the opposite and I am on my third one. It keeps my period acne away and my PMS isn't as bad as it was on the pill. Once you are past the five years, your Mirena is no longer hormone releasing so there is nothing to chemically cause acne or weight gain. Th heavy periods are due to estrogen release from the fat cells. I'm experiencing my first bleeding periods in 10+ years. Ugh!

Ok thanks for your responses I googled the Mirena and only then discovered that many other women report that is caused weight gain, libido problems and acne.

    Mirena Coil slow weight loss?

I've had mirena for almost 5 years now and I intend to replace it this winter. I never felt it was a factor in my weight at all. The depo shots I used to get years ago DID cause weight gain though!

    No weight loss

I had mine on 8/12 and lost 20 lbs before surgery day of I weighed 268 Today I weigh 245 I don't weigh daily because I just don't really think to.. I weigh in at the dr. So at two weeks i weighed 258 and then 6 weeks.. I weighed 251 ( but had a kidney stone so infection and swelling caused a 6 lb weight gain) after my kidney stone procedure and an office visit only 4 days later.. I was 245 I see inches lost my clothes are almost way too big I can't wear them without them falling off... My dr. Said to not weigh myself more than once a week for the first several months.. But to keep doing measurements on my body to see the difference. But 43 lbs in 2 months (since the two week per op diet) is more than I've ever lost on any diet so I think I'm doing well.
  17. I have not been sleeved yet, but my pre-op appt. is October 4th. Here is a list of questions I have compiled so far that I am interested in: Gas after surgery: Some people complain a lot about this. Does this have to do with the person or the surgeon's technique? What can I expect after surgery? Do you make everyone's stomach the same size or is it based on the size of my original stomach? Is there anything you might find during surgery that would cause me to wake up and not be sleeved? Straws: What is your "policy" on straws? I have heard different things online. Can you explain the theroy behind not using a straw? Weight gain from/after surgery: Some people online report gaining weight after surgery. Is this normal? What causes it? and what can I expect? Fluid Vs Protein: I am worried about getting all my fluid in. I don't drink that much liquid now. What is most important fluid or Protein? Blood tests: What are you testing for and what might show up that would cause concern or to have to postpone the surgery? Thats all I have for now, but I may be adding some after I read the replies to this post Bonnie
  18. Good advice here. Surgery can cause a bit of weight gain, and Water retention. Our bodies tend to insulate and swell up when we have any kind of trauma. Give yourself some TLC, put an ice pack on the port site. Mine took some time to heal as well. For me it's also at the exact level of my desk at work so it gets bumped often Keep up your H2O, and get some walking in when you can. Your doing great! Hope all feels right for you soon!

    BCBS OF ILLINOIS

My BCBS of Illinois required 3 meetings with the NUT & NP, beginning, 3 months and 6 months with weigh in. They also required an EKG, Psych evaluation, sleep Study, and a REE Test. I will be finished with my last visit on October 23 (First visit April 17). On October 23 I meet with my surgeon for the second time. After the initial deductible was met and out of pocket was paid everything has been paid at 100%. The surgery will be $0.00. My policy is a 6 months mandatory. It has been a true test of my patience. The anticipation is building and I am truly excited. I have been chipping away at the llbs over the last 6 months because of the weigh ins. My Blue Cross specifies no weight gain while in a Bariatric program. My company must have bought the BCBS policy with ISSUES of CONTROL~

    2 months and stalled

Hi ms Kat Measuring is a big key. As bandsters we should really be eating 1 cup at each meal. For me portion was and is a big roadblock to weight loss. You may need a fill or 2 or 3 to get to the point where one cup is enough. Also the foods you have listed...can be high in sodium and sugar depending on the product, and can cause Water retention and too much sugar actually can cause a weight gain. Bulk up on the solid Protein, alot of the items you listed are slider foods that go through so easily we can over eat them. It takes time to figure out what works for you and what doesn't. It can be frustrating I know but you will get there

    Depo shot

All contraception affects people in different ways. The pill is widely know for DVT risk etc which is why most dr's have their patients stop it prior to surgery. I'm 33 and wasn't required to stop my depo shot. I think there are side effects to every form of contraception and obviously people who are on one form will advocate for that. For me personally, I hate the pill, I didn't actually want periods, and I wanted no foreign object implanted in me.. Which left be the option of condoms or the shot. Condoms are just not reliable for me. I have happily been on the shot for 17 years. I have lost 111lbs in 7 months so it has not affected my weightloss, I don't worry about falling pregnant (which I absolutely don't want), I don't have to remember to take it everyday and I don't have anything implanted.. So for me its perfect. I said earlier that I was fat when I started the depo so how can I blame my weight gain on the shot? I just ate too much food. I take calcium supplements - well it's a small price to pay for my peace of mind! Each and every person will tell you why their contraception is the best choice. I think it's up to the individual to decide what fits well into their lifestyle. Good Luck in finding something that works well for you.

    little nervous

Thank you! Not far enough along to tell our friends yet, so it feels nice being able to tell all you sleevers here and know someone understands how I feel about the weight gain.

    little nervous

There really isn't a minimum weight gain for pregnancy these days. As long as you're taking in calories daily and your baby is growing appropriately (your provider should do more growth scans than a normal pregnancy) then you're good to go. There are people who don't gain any weight and have healthy babies. So keep on with 64+oz of water daily, and lots of protein. A little exercise is good also. No worries! Enjoy this exciting time!
  24. 9 months postop and on 8/10 had a positive pregnancy test. At first I was freaked out, then as the days went on we became more and more excited. I was worried about weight gain bc i wasn't at goal yet. But I decided to just follow the plan and worry about the weight after baby comes. Fast forward to this past Thursday, I started spotting. I called the on call OB and since I already had my 1st appointment scheduled for the next day, 9/20, he said there was no reason to come in early or go to the er unless I was in pain or bleeding a lot. Upon doing the transvaginal ultrasound we learned that our jellybean stopped growing at 6w5d, Friday I was 9w5d. My world just feel down on top of me. I scheduled a d&c for the next day. The 1st 2 days after I think in was in shock. Yesterday and today I'm so emotional and all I wanna do is eat. I haven't eaten for emotional reasons in almost a year. Has anyone been here? Any words or advice? Today has been especially bad bc I'm home alone. I took yesterday and today off of work. Yesterday I took my 3 yr to the zoo and we had a blast. Today she went to daycare. We had a m/c before our daughter and now one after her. I'm beside myself.
  25. If you don't currently use salt on your food you might try adding salt to your food. I prefer Morton's Lite Salt because it contains both sodium and potassium. I would contact the surgeons office and ask for a referral to an endocrinologist. It will be worth it to go to one they refer you to, even if it is a 5 hour drive. Steroids are really bad for causing weight gain, and they can have a permanent effect on your body. Even if you don't want to get a referral from your surgeon, I would at least see another endocrinologist and get a second opinion.
