I recently discontinued prednisone after 5 years of use. Until I switched to my new pulmonologist, I was unable to tapper down any lower than 20 mg. However, since being with him I have gone all the way down to 3 mg. The first time ever. He is the one who suggested the bariatric surgery for me as a tool to improve my breathing being that my lungs will not be pushed up into my rib cage by the fat middle I have accumulated as a result of extended prednisone use. I am wondering if there is anyone else out there that can relate to my story about respiratory problems, prednisone use and having asthma or copd and contemplating this surgery. My surgery is scheduled for 9/30/14. Also, I am scheduled for an EGD. Does everyone have to have this done? Please share. I need to hear from you guys. Thanks.

Emotional struggle after gastric sleeve
Juhygtfrdsd replied to KittyCathy22's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I read that book its an excellent book..the best is how it describes your rebirth...think of all this like ur being reborn as a newborn you fussy, learning your body, discovering yourself...its not gonna be the same when ur a 2 yr old toddler u know what u can so and cant and u have the energy etc... My bariatric center has a library we can borrow books from and i borrowed it there...it has real life scenarios and stories which .ake it great. -
My surgeon and dietitian says that juice plus is a great way to get antioxidants because we can't eat as many fruits and veggies....but that it is not a replacement to a good bariatric multi vitamin, iron, and calcium supplements.

From caloric/ bariatric perspective honey and agave are not good options. I have no idea about sorghum.

Torrigurll: My hospital stay was only two days and I felt good, minimum pain. However, my problems started with switching to puree foods. I sort of got sick and the transition was not going well so I switched back to full liquids. that did not go well because I was tired of the protein shakes and it became difficult for me to get them down so I made some changes. I switched to Centrum Liquid Multivitamin, Caltrate Bone Health Soft Chews, and I went to http://www.nashuanutrition.com who offers a variety of liquid protein choices that provides 15 g of protein in just 1 oz and is recommended for post surgery patients including Bariatric patients. You should visit their website. I also purchased Glucerna protein shakes which I drink 4 oz every now or then in the morning just to make sure my blood sugar stays intact. Remember, however, I did not make these changes until 3-4 weeks after surgery, and it is working for me. I'm back on track. Another point is bowel movements. my doctor said I was supposed to everyday, but to me that didn't make sense since I'm not eating like that. So don't get upset if you only go every other day, but if you find your stool softeners aren't working, buy Miralax with is excellent because it is gradual and works with your body, easily dissolves in liquid and tastes okay. You'll go a couple of days after taking it. Or, add a little Citrucel to your diet. I use sublingual vitamins b-12 because sublingual dissolve under the tongue and are easily absorbed into the body so any sublingual you find is a plus and you won't have to be bothered with excess chewing or crushing. Also I did multiple web searches and alternative choice for healthy meals. And if you don't feel like trudging to the gym everyday, try this video by Jane Fonda which assimulates walking a mile every day: Jane Fonda: Walking Cardio Workout : Level 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UabUNrjSE4&index=1&t=25s&list=PLD0BvlGc1FlAXBpGhQNNYx6_v43DArIH8 I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Opinions please
Healthy_life2 replied to hotmessmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep your job and personal life separate. You can google to see over million of bariatric patient's sharing their journey, educating people and attempting to change the stigmas about weight loss surgery. One more weight loss surgery experience shared on social media is not going to be a great inpact. Sent from my SM-G920T using BariatricPal mobile app -
I couldn't handle any of the chewables. My surgeon recommended the bariatric advantage chewy bites and I love them - all 4 flavors.

preo op requirements
BetsyB replied to karmaandkismet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My insurance company gave conditional approval; I knew that if I completed my doctor's supervision, approval was forthcoming. (I, too, had documented WW attendance, as well as documented supervision by my PCP; the "official" supervision did not begin until I stepped on the bariatric surgeon's scale.) The three months went by FAST---there is lots of other stuff crammed in there, so you'll be busy as you "wait." (It's a really great time to focus on behaviors you'll need postop, too ) -
Diet for post surgery regular food
anonbaribabe replied to ecintron's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I just bought two cookbooks—Fresh Start Bariatric Cookbook and The Gastric Sleeve Bariatric Cookbook, both by Sarah Kent. I haven't made anything from them yet, but have looked through them and am excited about making several of the recipes. -
I found out I wouldn't "qualify" in the 10 minutes it took me to read my policy....it doesn't cover WLS for ANY reason. I was actually kind of relieved. No doctor visits, no support groups, no psych evaluation, no 3-6 month supervised diet, no piles of paperwork or whatever other hoops you have to jump through. Just focused on finding a great bariatric surgeon in Mexico, scheduled it and I was at home, recovering and losing weight before I would have even started the insurance scam ( I mean process)

Is it mandatory to quit smoking?
BitterSweet* replied to kymmiej11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no idea! What I do know is that the Patches are allowed as part of a smoking cessation program pre-op, with the intent being that an individual will completely stop all nicotine products. You'd have to check with your team to clarify what their requirements are because it seems that these bariatric surgeons have such different protocols. The patches may not be a problem at all for some and prohibited by others. I hope it works out for you! Smoking is a hard habit to kick. Good luck and let us know what you find out. -
Scared I won't be successful
Frustr8 replied to dreamingofasleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You're not the only one who goes into hives. I call them" stress bumps" got them before my last Thursday. appointment then distressed & distressed that they would see them and think I had fleas, Nearly had panic on top of anxiety, they noticed depression on my medical history, asked if I could be bipolar? Geesh, I'm the diagnosee, not the diagnoser. Told them the closest I come to manic is jumping to conclusions. Maybe I am bipolar but if so, nobody has brought me into the loop. That would be my,luck, to be the last to know. But I got through that day super fine, they were very nice people, more than willing to,my on a gurney for them. Besides the other day I was in like a mezzanine level, if they pushed me out the window I'd only get lightly bruised. I'm acrophobic, I make sure I'm never too far from the ground. Rumor has it, the post-Bariatric Ward is on the 8th floor of the Main Hospital, la la la I don't hear it, if I don't hear it I don't have to think about it. According to Noel Grimm, Late Lamented 's friend, aka the Vision. aka Wallace the Wierd, I was thrown from a building in ancient Persia and crushed under a load of been melons. He also claims he was the driver of the Melon Cart. Strange Dude, sleeps under an inverted chrystal to channel to wisdom of the ages into his chakra, and he is certain he was there. This explained my aversion to melons so strongly, that I vomit if I even smell their sickening sweet smell. Cantaloupe, Persian melon and especially watermelon. I stopped the car and made Tomkitten get out when he had watermelon-scented gum in his mouth. Well, it was for My Protection and who wants to wear what I last ate?😜 -
Ashleine!! That is so exciting!!! ????Is this your first? How are you feeling and doing? Did you have a boy or girl? How's baby? So, happy to hear from you. ???? My sleeve experience has been less than desirable. I am using the Bariatric Pals App on my iPhone. Do you test at all? Wondering if I can send you a private message of sorts with my number? Not to familiar with this app, but I am going to try and figure it out. My first pregnancy even at 120lbs heavier was a breeze. This second time around... It's very challenging. I am in the third trimester and things are easing a bit. Other than I am passing a lot of kidney stones and I can't seem to keep infection out of my kidneys. I believe this is my fifth diagnoses of kidney infection and round of antibiotics. I fear not much is changing. It hurts internally when I try to urinate. I see my OB tomorrow and I am going to talk to her about this. I also see a peranatoligist, and I am being closely watched. I am SO thrilled and excited to meet this little guy. We are naming him Sven Thoreau. I hope your doing well!

Hi guys! I'm new here so I'm sorry if this is the wrong board or whatever, but I have a question. My insurance is BCBSFL and while researching, I learned that BCBS does not cover bariatric surgery in Florida. But I do have a BMI in excess of 40, and I was wondering if there was something I could do like submit a form or something that would get them to cover it? Has anyone had any luck or experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Found out today that my specific group within united health care choice plus excludes bariatric surgery. Fabulous. So we are going to try and appeal it but overall plan on being private pay. Anyone know round about what the cost range is for sleeves?

Collagen supplements
Alex Brecher replied to GreenTealael's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
My personal fave are the 25g shots https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/collagen-for-bariatric-patients/products/bariatricpal-25g-whey-protein-collagen-power-shots-crisp-apple . They're very tart so if you don't like tart this isn't for you. -

One Year Out, Looking For Advice
HashiHope121 replied to Tapioca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Tapioca- I am no expert and I love the idea of a Bariatric Therapist from @Jaelzion! She sounds like a pro. It also sounds like you are doing great and are at a healthy weight! Like you, I've found myself snacking on more unhealthy things lately and a few tricks that have helped me include: 1) Going for a walk for about an hour. During this hour I naturally don't snack, and drink a full water bottle. Even if i don't want to go, I tell my self to do just 20min and I always end up doing an hour. 2) Paying attention to what I am craving when I snack- usually its salty or sweet/chocolate, so I've tried to swap for healthier salt/sweet (Salt- hummus & carrots, soup; Sweet- SF hot chocolate, protein hot chocolate, 100 Cal Chocolate bar, strawberries & whip cream) 3) I stick to an eating schedule, and eat basically the same thing M-F, so I don't get too hungry and don't have to think about what I am going to eat. 4) Sometimes I force myself to have a protein shake before a snack, and 90% of the time I don't want the snack after the shake. 5) I turn off the TV/regular shows and replace them with computer (unhealthy in other ways, but nonetheless), documentaries or books. I am easily influenced by what people on TV are eating. If they are having cookies, I want cookies. 6) Controversial but, I weigh myself everyday. It keeps me motivated. I know others say not to, but it works for me. 7) Balancing out an unhealthy day, with an extra healthy one. It was my Dad's bday recently and ya know what, we had cake, pizza & wine. I had a little of each. I think long term success includes balance. So, following a day like that (which is rare, but is life) I try to have an extra healthy few days focused on protein shakes & veggies. Again, I am no expert but hope these ideas help. I know ideas from other members have helped me a ton. Take care! You are doing great! -
One Year Out, Looking For Advice
Tapioca replied to Tapioca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I really appreciate the advice, it was helpful. I typically keep how I feel to myself or I'm not 100% honest with myself, and I know I shouldn't. I'm just having a hard time distracting myself, or telling myself no When I get a craving. Or I'll tell myself no and just eventually give in. I think it's more out of boredom than anything. I do eat my feelings sometimes, but I feel lately I think about eating because I'm not doing anything, or just because I can. I feel I've just been more embarrassed and ashamed to talk about it. But I think maybe seeking out a bariatric therapist might help me. Maybe help develop ways to distract myself too. -
Anyone Have Any Complications Going To Mexico For Surgery
Afro_Cyster replied to mbabercrombie's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I would like to mimic SexySlim. Unlike most US doctors, all of the doctors mentioned above have completed hundreds of bariatric surgeries. Their prices are absolutely absurd for the risks they (and we) endure. As long as you continue your due diligence, be forthcoming with your own medical background, and research your doctor, you will be fine. -
BariatricEating.com: Not What You Want To Hear...
geronimo replied to blashlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sorry, but you calling 30 years of obesity "laziness" further underscores my opinion. Science has shown that obesityhas to do with biological and genetics issues. Thinking it's nothing more than laziness has the same overly simplistic mentality as thinking that the only thing needed to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. Getting Bariatric Surgery still requires heavy diet and exercise, but also requires that we literally put our life on the line to enable this tool. Putting ourselves in a position where we might die on the operating table seems to me like the opposite of taking the easy way out. -
Congratulations! My Doctor is Dr. Nusbaum. He's the head of bariatric at Morristown Memorial and St. Barnabus. I have been told I'll feel like I did when my gallbladder was removed in post-op. Anyone know if that is true!?

Fitting in all my favorite foods
FluffyChix replied to apiane's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I made this as a microwave version when I was on mushies. I used the low fat soup and canned chicken. It was really delish and satisfying. And perfectly on plan. I put it up in small 1/4c portions and froze it. Then i'd take one out per meal and nuke it for like 1 minute 20 seconds and had a meal of which I ate maybe 1/2 of it. The bariatric version isn't carb heavy at all. Here's my recipe for it, but now I just omit the COC soup and use COM. -
Looking for better calcium citrate option
Sajijoma replied to 3boysmama's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I use bariatric advantage chewy bite 500's. Just take one after each meal and they taste good. I usually keep a bag of chocolate and caramel on hand and sometimes switch out with peanut butter.
