Nothing tastes good or the same

Hug's I hope you are at a healthy BMI and not underweight. 13 months out, It must be hard to go into maintenance diet when you have an aversion to meat. Food can be a challenge. Have you tried any bariatric recipes to mix things up? Are you drinking shakes to get protein in? Links to the vegan bariatric forum and the maintenance thread below. It may help with food ideas and to stop weight loss, https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1101-vegetarian-or-vegan-eating/ https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425802-the-maintenance-thread/?tab=comments#comment-4782396

    First Post Sleeve Thanksgiving Meals?

antipasto to start, which I had 1 shrimp, eggplant, cheese, salami, olive and broccoli rabe about 2 hrs later a small portion of bariatric butternut squash soup then an hour later 1 slice of turkey with a spoonful of stuffing, sweet potato, broccoli cheese casserole, creamed spinach and then an extra spoon of stuffing (first time having bread) and a few hours later a sliver of bariatric pumpkin pie. BEST MEAL since surgery. I skipped the crackers, biscuts, cranberries and other sides.
  3. Yeah I does its secondary function- gastric acid, digestive juices- it just "Stores No More", in theory one could be reversed but I'm not sure if motility, peristalsis and enervation would come back and you would certainly be looking at OPEN SURGERY and having had an Abdominal Incision for something else They Can Be Boogers to Heal and not Every Bariatric Surgeon Can or Will undertake the grueling process. Have to be convinced. IT IS THE ONE BEST ALTERNITIVE FIR YOU! MINE is that Skilled, would HE DO IT FOR ME? DOUBTFUL, VERY DOUBTFUL! Would I Ask? WELL I Haven't Yet and I have had an extremely Rocky Road and at less than one month to 74, I Very Well MIGHT NOT LIVE through IT ALL- So-o-o.....!
  4. I don't think you failed! I agree with the poster above, find a good PCP, if you don't have one now, dietician, and bariatric surgeon, and tell them about your concerns. See what they think.
  5. Hi Libby63, I just had my surgery 11/4. Yesterday on Thanksgiving....I stayed home---just as self care, mentally and physically. I'm not to soft foods yet, and yes, it was tough--but as the others mentioned above, its just this year. I'll be able to enjoy foods again in the future. My goal is to restore my health and enjoy my 3 little granddaughters for the next hopefully 20+ years. My weight problem started when I was late 30's, working night shift as RN and then developed depression. Medications added 30 lbs immediately, and working off shifts escalated weight gain. Through the years, shifts in medications, divorce etc etc and I can't believe it happened to me--the weight gain. I did a lot of research on bariatric/metabolic surgery and the positive changes it will bring. I made the decision in June 2019 and went ahead with strong mind. No regrets. You're right, it's not easy. Being 250 lbs and 5/4" wasn't easy and I didn't want to live that way any longer. I felt myself retreating and isolating from social gathers. Working all week, and isolating on the weekends. My mother died at age 48 of ovarian ca. I don't want my health to deteriorate any more to not be able to travel to my daughters home and play a major role in her life and her family. Obesity is a pile on disease...the co-morbidities pile on and underlying it all is the disease of obesity. I wish you the very best in your decision. You can do it, and the health changes it will bring will be worth it. God Bless! Gloria

    Not sure where to start?

Welcome to the site and congratulations on your baby boy. Getting back on track can be done. You may want to call a bariatric surgeon to go over all your options.
  7. So, I am not exactly sure where to start so I guess I will just go with the beginning: I was sleeved on 2/15/16 starting weight at 243 by 10/1/16 I had lost 98.8 lbs weighing in at 144.2lbs. 10/10/16, I found out I was pregnant. I had a textbook pregnancy, perfect strong baby boy was born on 6/13/17. I had only gained 30 lbs during my pregnancy. (Please I beat myself up enough, my son was not planned, I was told I wouldn’t be able to have kids but by the grace of God he is here) jump to today. I have gained a total of 55 lbs and hovering at 200. I’ve found myself eating more. And not sure what to do.. I also moved to a different state. Anyway, obviously I failed. I’m not sure how to get back on the right foot. Do I go see a general doctor? Should I just get to a Bariatric specialist? For those who had a revision, how did you go about figuring that out? I’m hoping I don’t have to get one, and I can work on this. But I want to do it the right way. Positive feed back please and thank you!!!
  8. Hi @jack Wood, I started by educating myself on bariatric / metabolic surgery. If you're on twitter, start following bariatric surgeons and bariatric advocates on twitter. They post a lot of recent research and information that's excellent. There are so many new theories and data on obesity. Check out @Jeanine M Sherman/iamabariatricpatient and Dr. Neil Floch MD to begin with. Take care! Gloria
  9. I can't speak for your specific case, but in general, the liver is stressed by metabolizing all of that fat that we are losing so quickly - this is why many surgeons advise against consuming any alcohol during that first year or so of rapid weight loss (the liver doesn't need any additional stress from a liver toxin like alcohol). So, liver numbers in blood tests are often abnormal for a while during this loss phase and for some time after; whether that extends to a physical fatty liver diagnosis from an ultrasound, I don't know. My surgeon is also a liver guy (does transplants in his "spare time") so these things get discussed in general in the support groups, though I never had occasion to talk any specifics with him. It is hard to say if your surgeon is just being casual about it because what he sees is fairly normal, or is something beyond his job description and experience. While they may not have anyone else within the bariatric department who is more knowledgeable, they certainly have a liver disease department there that will have a hepatoligist that you can talk to. The problem is that they may not be that familiar with bariatrics and rapid weight loss so may want to go farther in treatment than is necessary - they may need to get their heads together between the two departments to determine what is really going on. Good luck...

    RNY to SIPS/SADI

Hi, I am going to have this surgery come 12/4/19. I am nervous and excited. I had no problem getting approval as this is now a standard of care for bariatric surgeons, I'll let you know how it goes.
  11. mcfluffington

    Letter approval

I am getting a revision and I was approved first thing. I am in complete shock about it. I thought for sure I would have to fight for it. But the revision that my surgeon doing has now become part of the standard of care for bariatric surgeons.
  12. Hi everyone, I am 5ft 6" and weigh 250lbs, which puts me right at a BMI of 40, which meets my insurance guidelines to consider bariatric surgery. I'm worried that I'll lose weight before I get approved, so when do they record my weight and BMI for insurance? If I lose too much during the pre op stage, will they say "oh well you're not going to meet the criteria for surgery now as you're under the BMI of 40 with no comorbidities"? For some reason that's getting me worked up.

    Lightheaded. Not orthostatic hypotension

Hi. Daisyjayne. No, they just checked hemoglobin, I think. I have had low ferritin stores before, so maybe you're right! Bariatric team checking that in late December. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Lightheaded. Not orthostatic hypotension

Thanks, ValerieinMexico. I did have my iron checked, and I'm not anemic. All basic bloodwork was normal, but I'm having my bariatric team run tests for vitamin and protein levels next week, along with some other tests. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. The results of my sleep study showed mild sleep apnea. The mild range is 5-15. I scored 6.5. My surgery is supposed to be in 2 weeks but I don't know if they'll make me treat it first. Anyone know what range of apnea they require CPAP treatment for? Is it possible I'd still be approved for surgery since it's such a mild case? The sleep clinic said it will more than likely clear up with weight loss. Thanks for any info you may have. I just don't want to wait the long holiday weekend without an idea since I won't hear from my surgeon until next week probably.

    So many chest pains

Just got my ultrasound results back. Multiple Stones. Thank you to everyone who suggested my gallbladder! 3+ trips to the ER and not one of those high paid doctors thought of it even though my chart said I was a Bariatric patient! Thank you all so much! Holding off to have it removed Jan 23.

    Lap Band to Gastric Sleeve

I had lap band in 2005. I lost about 80 pounds but was miserable almost the entire time. I later found that my band slipped probably in the 1st 6 months due to violent vomiting secondary to gall bladder dysfunction. In 2009, when my surgeon discovered the slip (FINALLY), he removed the lap band and offered to convert me to sleeve then. I chose not to for various personal reasons. Skip ahead to 2015. I have gained all of my weight back and can't seem to get back on track. A friend, who had also been banded and converted to the sleeve, got me thinking and I finally decided to get sleeved. I underwent gastric sleeve in April 2018. The pre-op and immediate post-op is nearly identical. The pain I had with the sleeve was similar to the port pain with the band, although I couldn't sleep laying down on my side for about a month. My weight loss was much slower with the sleeve. They say it's because I've been down the bariatric path before and my body is slower to respond (metabolism remembers). Besides, I'm a little older. Today, I've lost 86 lbs. At this point, I'll stall for 2-3 weeks then lose a pound or 2. I have more energy and I don't feel deprived, at all. The only negative is that I have a bit of nighttime reflux. It's a battle I wage every day and am seeing a gastroenterologist to monitor and treat. So far, it's not significant enough to consider any kind of revision and my plan is that the sleeve is my last stop on the bariatric train.
  18. @Billy Bob I am drinking mostly Premier Protein and Muscle Milk shakes. Sometimes I’ll drink an Ensure Plus Max. I find the Muscle Milk shakes are thinner thus were easier to get down my first week. Any shake I drink is 30 grams of protein per serving. I will also have 8-12 oz of diet cranberry juice with a scoop of Nectar flavorless protein powder (to break up the monotony of the water). For vitamins I’m taking the Bariatric Fusion chewable (orange creamsicle flavor) 2 vitamins, twice a day (no other vitamins). I’ll be curious to see what others are taking for vitamins. As an aside I’m two weeks post op today so I just started on purées.
  19. Has anyone ever moved quickly thru the phases of the post op diet? I have had no naseau or vomiting but only eat less.

    Dr. Doesn’t require protein?b

Hi. I couldn’t imagine any bariatric surgeon not requiring their patient to get protein in post op. It is very important for healing. The cardinal rule for bariatric patients post op and for life is “protein first” i had sleeve in 2018 and revision to bypass last Friday. Both surgeons required 60grams of protein post op. Good luck with your research and hope that helped.

    Under rib pain

Right side under ribs could be your gallbladder if you still have it. Very common after bariatric surgery.

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

And once again I lost my entire juicy enhanced protein shake breakfast yesterday morning- Gee Whilickers THIS gets so OLD- probably peeve and look like I am ungrateful the powers that be at OSU Bariatric surgery but I want a t-shirt stating " Gastrointestinally Crippled- Slightly" today things are better but I may never be the Poster Child Success I once dreamed of Being- but Still it Is what it is, perhaps like the Biblical Esau I sold my " Birthright" and I now am reaping the whirlwind of THAT decision. But 1/2 the size I started AT...... GOOD..... but I have gone through' Purgatory on Earth" to get There.
  23. @Chris NH thank you! I did not realize that they had a specific customer service team for this. I did meet with my surgeon’s office and they did confirm that they just revised the requirements and that it is no longer 6 months but that they would not give her a specific amount of time. She said basically for me to do 2 months followed by my physician and then they will send in the prior auth and see what they say. But I’m going to call back tomorrow and see if I can get the bariatric team and try to get a specific answer. thank you again for your help!
  24. Hi, I, too, have The UMR / United Healthcare insurance and I just had my surgery November 12. How I understood the requirements I needed to be under the care of the gastric surgeon’s program for six months and showing a weight loss during that time. Also, super important, UMR requires your program/hospital be a COE (center of excellence). One thing I did learn along the way with dealing with UMR is that there is a specialized customer service team that deals with just bariatric questions. If you call the general service number any rep will talk to you but they may not be as versed as this team....you need to ask for them. Once I learned about this team I started getting direct answers to my questions rather than having people dig for answers. Good luck and feel free to message me with other questions.
