  1. Hey everyone, Newbie here. On Friday, I got a call saying that my surgery is scheduled for 8/19 - if I wanted it to be - so I booked it. Of course, that was actually perfect timing (workwise it fits great with my schedule), but I feel like I had NO notice. No time to prepare, no time to get a few things out of my system (like a trip to my favorite seafood restaurant, etc.). I'm not big on pigging out, so that wasn't my intention, but I had to start the pre-op diet immediately and did so on Saturday. Now, it's a GORGEOUS day here in Chicago and I'd love nothing more than to sit outside and enjoy a raspberry lemonade with a splash of vodka (I'm not a big drinker either, but that's something I enjoy on a nice day). In some ways, I feel like I'm depriving myself. The diet I'm on is pretty strict in my opinion (tho I know others have it worse) - only certain plain, raw veggies, 5 Ensure High Protein shakes, and 64oz. water a day. That's it - I can't even so much as use salt or pepper on the veggies. I know I want to go thru with this surgery, but now I feel like I'm kind of rushing it. On the other hand, I feel like I should just push thru and get it over with. I'm also worried because I see all these posts about people not losing as much as they expect to. I'm currently 5'5", 227, BMI is 36. I'm already down 4lbs. since Saturday just eating the way I am. Please tell me this gets easier!

    pre-op diet

My surgery is scheduled for 8/19 and I just started my pre-op diet on Saturday as my surgery date was just given to me on Friday. I can only have certain raw veggies, 64oz. of water & 5 Ensure High Protein drinks per day. I have to tell you, it's rough. I've only cheated twice - had two slices of turkey lunchmeat one day and half a plain, 1/4lb. hamburger (no bun, seasonings, cheese, or anything else) another day. Since Saturday morning, I've lost 4lb. but I feel miserable. I have headaches, feel lightheaded, am achy, and have had major stomach/bathroom issues. I emailed my dietician this afternoon to see if this is normal as I just feel awful. Hoping she'll let me add some more "solid" food like chicken breast. Good luck - I know it's not easy!
  3. Good Evening! I had a follow up with my surgeon today from a EGD in July. He's scheduling me for a revision to bypass and hiatal hernia repair asap . I'm scared! Then following that surgery maybe a few months later he'll schedule another surgery to repair another hernia with a mesh. I'm going thru it right now. how many of yall had complete relief from reflux after getting a revision? Have you had any other complications with bypass? any regrets? Of course I'm doing the research on it but I'm afraid of it, that's why I didn't get it to begin with. I can't wait to enjoy wls..I haven't reaped any benefits of it yet. my stats: 5'4" HW 261 SW 249 CW 226 GW 170 or just to be healthy at this point. Sleeved 4/9/19 had multiple EGD with dilations due to vomiting and multiple setbacks and developed horrible acid reflux.

What was your early weight loss like?

I was in the hospital for surgeries 5 days. I practically ate nothing but gained 19 lbs. during that time (IV Fluids). Went home and lost 5 lbs. per day for 4 days. After that, over the next 4 weeks I lost 5 lbs. per week. Post OP months 2 and 3 averaged 10 lbs. per month weight loss.

What was your early weight loss like?

I think I was swollen so at day 4-5 I was the same or higher. At 9-10 days I was down about 5 lbs. the first few weeks were 5#, the first month was an avg of 4#/week and at week 4/5 I hit an avg of 3#/week and stayed steady with that for 6 months. At that point I purposely increased calories since I was already past my goal and wanted to slow weight loss down.
  6. How's everyone doing at a year (or nearly a year) out..??? My year will be on the 28th. SW: 173, pants size 10, shirt size large, bra 36G/H, shoe 7 Current: 120, pants size 0, shirt size sm/med, bra 32FF, Shoe 6-6.5 has anyone had issues? or any problems? What are some of the things that you wish you had known before? Tips?
  7. So I've been going through the approval process for 5 months and last week I got my surgery date.... And it's only 11 days away (10 if you don't include today). And I am TERRIFIED. Disclosure: I have several anxiety disorders, and big BIG stuff like this freaks me out. I felt similar before (and actually for several months after) getting married even though I 100% love my husband and our relationship was and still is as solid as can be, and I felt the same,or even more scared, when we had our son. Like just utterly panicked thinking wtf am I doing my life was fine before (even if that's not even true). I have moments when I see more clearly, that really I only have 2 options: don't get the surgery, and likely gain even more weight. I mean, let's face it, that IS what will happen and logically I know that. That's what has always happened. Even if I go on a diet and commit to it and lose weight, I always always always gain it back plus more. There is no reason that wouldn't be the case now, suddenly, all of a sudden. Or my 2nd option, have the surgery and gain the tool that will actually help me lose weight AND keep it off (I know, if I put in the work). But then I have moments of utter terror. And I just want to back out and run away from it. But I don't *really* want that. Because I don't want to stay like this. And I'm not going to lie to myself that I can all of a sudden do this on my own. I'm just afraid of the whole permanent thing. Like, the sleeve actually IS reversible in that you can stretch out your stomach over time and eventually be right back to where you started. But if I get botched or if it's awful for some reason, there is no fixing it. That's so scary! Sorry for such a long post..but did anyone else feel like this in the days leading up to surgery?
  8. @WhatATool:-) I lost 19 lbs. the first month. I only weighed at the Doctor's office so I have no idea what I was earlier than that. While some might be disappointed by that number, I was thrilled. It was the most I'd ever lost in a month & I hadn't gained as I normally would have if I'd kept on as I was pre surgery. Now 15 years later, I am right where I want to be. I hope you will be, too.

    EGD experiences

The first egd i had a decade ago was in texas and i was awake for it. The second one i had for wls that hospital makes everyone sleep. I had to stay an extra hour in observation due to being more high risk (apnea). I tasted reflux right after. I took a nap when i got home that day. IV was in top of hand and had a weird bruise under there for days. Its scary its a trial practice run because its quick like 5-10 minutes unconscious versus 1-2 hours for surgery

    Guilt

I, too, consider myself to be a very honest person. I am a terrible liar, so I feel like I can't get away with anything but the truth. But I haven't told ANYONE, not even my family, that I had weight loss surgery, and I don't intend to. That is personal medical information and it's nobody's business. The only people who know are medical professionals. There is a lot of judgment in this world about weight and WLS. It's ironic because the same people who openly criticize fat people also don't like it when fat people choose the only method of weight loss with more than 10% long-term effectiveness to lose weight. We just can't win! I'm not sure what will happen if/when people start noticing I've lost weight. I've actually lost more than 80 pounds already (most of it before surgery) and nobody has noticed because I was so big to begin with that I'm still really big even after this much weight loss. It will probably be a few more months before anyone notices. I only took a week off from work for my surgery, so I'm not sure if anyone will make the connection. Everyone saw me eating salads for lunch for several months before surgery, so maybe they will just assume I've been on a diet. Because of COVID-19, most people are working from home and we aren't having team lunches, so nobody has seen what I'm eating lately. I will probably be able to eat a small salad by the time we have another team lunch. I am known for being a very private person, so I hope that means that my coworkers will know better than to ask me about my weight. They talk all the time about diet, exercise, and weight, and I never take part in these discussions. I am also very careful never to comment on anyone's body in the workplace, so nobody dares to say anything about mine (at least not in front of me, although I have heard them say things behind my back). My preliminary plan if anyone asks (a) how I'm losing weight or (b) if I've had WLS is to act shocked and say, "Wow, that's a personal question." I think it will be harder to hide from my family, but I don't see them very often. They've seen me yo-yo diet over the years, so it might not be a big shock to them, although I've lost more weight by now than I ever have on previous diets. I am hoping my mom will assume that I wouldn't have had surgery without telling her, and if other family members ask her, she will say that she doesn't think I had surgery.

    Is anyone else as disappointed...

When i was banded in 2009 I was considered severely obese. I, like you, had been very blessed and have not had any health problems. Blood pressure is always normal, no diabetes, and my cholesterol is always on the very low end. I have never been on any medications for anything like that. Still like that. My last set of blood work from my WLS and GYN was perfect. 2009 SW was 232lbs 5'2"... 2017 band removal 143lbs..... 8/28/2019 sleeved 173lbs. today 120lbs. I averaged about 4lbs a month.... remember sometimes slow and steady wins the race.
  12. Im in the same boat. Its been like two months since ive been approved. So covid, on top of my surgery being canceled last month ive gain about 10 pounds. I have my pre op the 13th and surgery the 14th. let me know how it goes.

@Luv2cruz Unless i read over it, No one has asked a few very important questions. What is your height? What was your beginning weight? Are you logging your food? Are you exercising? What does your diet look like on a daily bases? The reason, if you have less to lose, you will tend to lose a little slower. A person who had 300lbs to lose will lose it faster that say a person that has 100lbs to lose. My story is a little different than some.... but anywho.... After being here for over 10 years i have seen and read many different stories. I have also experienced it with some very close friends. I've had friends like myself who had the band (lost 2017 gained 30lbs). Lost there band and have gained it back or revised to a different WLS. Some with success and some without. I have a few that had only the sleeve and either never lost or gained it all back. I've even had a few that had GB and either gained some or all of the weight back. I do have a few friends that had the band and have kept their weight off for over 10 years. The point is.... ALL WLS have their goods and bads. Ups and downs. It's how you as a person handles YOUR journey. (ok just read your last post, so i'm taking out this part) I would start at the begging, look within yourself. Maybe seek a counselor (it's helping me). Otherwise, i would start tracking your food (if you aren't already). Get yourself a good exercise program (even if it's just walking more and faster). I wish i had journaled.... I write myself inspiring quotes on my bathroom mirror. I know you didn't want to hear it, but its true and hard not to do... But, try to not compare yourself to others. I compared myself to others all the time, then someone years ago told me that..... So now i have on my mirror..... Envy is the thief of happiness. I wish you only good thoughts on your journey.

    Food Before and After Photos

I modified the salad dressing from this version: https://emilybites.com/2019/01/thai-chicken-chopped-salad-with-peanut-dressing.html I like lime, so I used juice from two limes and one packet of stevia instead of the brown sugar. The salad is best with Napa cabbage, but my store was out so I used regular coleslaw cabbage and carrot mix. I added a red bell pepper, two green onions, and about 3 oz of snow peas. All together, with dressing, my tiny serving was under 30 kcals, with 3 g net carbs. My chicken was marinated in mixture of zest from two limes, 3 Tbsp soy, 2 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp sriracha, handful of cilantro, .5 tsp salt, 2 clove garlic, 1 tbsp ginger (fresh or paste) for about 6 hours with 1.3 pound boneless chicken breast fillets. I make the marinade and dressing in my bullet mixer for ease. My portion was about 2.5-3 oz chicken, .5 cup salad, and 1 tbsp dressing.

Thank you all for the positive comments, support and encouragement! It does make me feel better knowing that there are a lot of us out there dealing with the same issues. ❤️ I do want to clarify a statement that I made. When I commented that my surgeon expected me to lose 100 pounds by Thanksgiving, I think I worded that wrong. He wasn’t saying that as a demand expectation. That was just a goal that he was thinking I could reach by Thanksgiving. Even though I have been obese for the last 10 years, I have been very blessed and have not had any health problems. Blood pressure is always normal, no diabetes, and my cholesterol is always on the very low end. I have never been on any medications for anything like that. I did weigh this morning after spending a fabulous weekend at the beach with my hubby. We did lots of walking between walking on the beach and shopping. I will say that I did not eat as much as I do when I’m at home. I lost 4 lbs. Thats what I’m talking about! 😜 Here’s to a fabulous weight loss week for all of us! 🍷. Oh, what I would do for a glass of wine right now! No wine for me before December!

    Band to Sleeve success...anyone?!?

worked for me..... I was a successful band-member for nearly 8 years. Never had any issues till march 2017. I got a bad stomach virus and threw up violently and slipped my band. I was my worst fear with the band.... LOSING HER. So i went on through life... divorce, dating, meeting someone else, moving out of state..... 2017-2019 on my own with no WLS. For years i tried to get a revision and no dr. would do it. My insurance didn't cover the band removal nor a revision. But i still looked ... same answer over and over.. "you don't weight enough". Over those years I gained 30lbs back. No matter what i did and menopause hit and wow... Now i've gained 30lbs. I was going to go to Mex to have the MGB. But as luck would have it, i found a dr 10 min from my work that did WLS. Went in for a consult and he agreed to do the sleeve..... That was nearly 1 year ago. 11/10/2009 band SW: 232lbs. size 18-20 pants, shirt 2xl (or bigger), bra 44G, shoe 7-7.5 (143lbs) 3/23/2017 band removal: 143lbs. size 6, shirt large, bra 34H, shoe 6.5-7 8/28/2019 sleeved: 173lbs. size 10, shirt large, bra 36G/H, shoe 7 (14k out of pocket) Today: 120lbs, size 0, shirt sm/med, bra 32FF, shoe 6-6.5
  17. This is what I feel right now and I know my feelings will change once things get to a new normal. I am 9 weeks post op, I’ve lost 55 lbs so far, I have not had any stalls, and I researched the pros/cons of surgery for months before surgery. I know numerous people IRL who have had the surgery 1, 3, 5, 7, & 10 years ago and none of them regret it. But if I knew how my recovery would be, I would not have had the surgery. I have had other health issues arise because of certain issues that come with surgery and have been in some type of pain for the past 5 weeks! I’ve had to take off from work many mornings or afternoons due to not being able to handle the pain in my office. I can feel myself becoming healthier and I know that in a few weeks/months I will have overcome this other issue but for now I do regret my surgery. Keep in mind I’ve also had to be treated for severe dehydration twice in the past month, so that has also contributed to my current thought process. Good luck with your journey! I’m sure you will make the right choice for you!

    Full Liquids and Spice

GO SLOW OR YOU WILL BE PUNISHED BIG TIME! As a male and someone who has tested the envelope his whole life i tried to push and mix stuff up. I will just tell you what i did and hopefully it will give you some guidance I purreed some rice into my broth about 4 days out and slammed it. Of course it was rice with seasoning and the broth was loaded. It hit hard and within minutes came flying back up. Was not a fun experience. So take it slow As a trained chef i would go about 10 of the spice you used to use and move up from there, but heck ya mix er up and enjoy the journey

    Weight Gain Pre Op

Thank you! Yea I called them and they said it shouldn’t be a problem but I didn’t realize I gained 10 pounds and I am freaking out. I tried to have one last night of having a couple of beers with a burger with some friends and it bit in the butt with 10 pounds. So I’m trying to do the liquid diet till my surgery even though my doctor didn’t tell me I needed to it. I’m just nervous day of they’re going to be like nevermind lol but the doctors office said I’m approved and it should be fine. Thanks for letting me vent lol

    Weight Gain Pre Op

Hey! So just to clarify you gained weight from your original weight and didn’t have an issue day of surgery? I already got approved for surgery for this week but gained like 10 pounds or less and just nervous they’re going to reschedule for some reason. thanks!

    Pandemic Check In

N&I, it looks like you had surgery in Oct 2019 - the Vets board has an 18 month post-op requirement.
  22. Hey all, So I got my insurance approval and have surgery this Thursday, August 13 and my doctor is not requiring me to do the liquid diet. I had one last get together, plus my time of the month, somehow gained like 10 pounds from my original weight. I’m so upset about it. But my pre-op appointment is at the hospital this Tuesday and worried about my weight gain. I’m doing the liquid diet on my own starting tomorrow. When I called my doctors office they said it should be fine. But I’m still nervous, has anyone day of surgery denied? Thank you!

    No longer obese!

Congrats! You'll reach your original goal before you know it! 😊 I, myself, have low standards and just want to be in the overweight category as I've been obese since I was in elementary school. Right now I'm the smallest I've been in 19 YEARS as I was 14 the last time I was 235! It honestly blows my mind and the fact that I'm even in a smaller size than I was when I was 14 is even odder to me. (I was a size 20 in pants and a 2x in tops when I was this weight at 14, but now I'm an 18 in pants and an xL in tops). There's also the fact that I hadn't been under 300 pounds since I was 17! I'm grateful every day that I made the decision to have this surgery... I put it off for far too long!

    No longer obese!

Yes, sizes are noticeable more quickly too! I feel like I just got in to my size 12 jeans and most pairs I have are already saggy in the waist. I’m only going to buy a couple pairs of pants in 10 since who knows where I’ll be after my tummy tuck. I’ve only dreamed of hitting single digits, but it now seems totally doable :)

    July 2020 WLS Veterans

Clementine welcome back! I think a BMI of 26 is generally pretty good considering most of us started at 45+!! Keep up the hard work. It IS hard work. For life. I am also not one of those lucky ones who lost the weight and never looked back. But I refuse to let my weight win, and I refuse to have had this surgery in vein. I am focused and on track. Julie, good to hear you're also keeping focused, 10 pounds is very achievable and you know what to do.
