  1. So, the Built Bar site has been down and since I loved them, I have been lurking around waiting for them to reopen. They tasted pretty good and most of them had 110 calories. Turns out Updated Lawsuit: Built Bar Fired Worker Who Raised COVID-19 Concerns. So forget them. What's a good, low calorie protein bar that tastes good? And yes, I realize these are about as nutritious as candy bars, but for 110 calories, they were working out for me.
  2. Based on everything I've read, plus discussions with my nutritionist and my surgeon's staff, the post-surgery weight loss is completely different for everyone. Some people lose a ton of weight really fast, others lose very slowly. The important thing is, fast or slow, it's still weight loss. Those of us who have lost quickly are going to slow down eventually, and we're all in it for the long haul. Honestly, losing quickly worries me a little bit, because I know I'm losing some muscle mass as well as fat. That's why it's really important for me to improve my protein intake as well as starting some strength-building exercise. My weight now is the lowest it's been since before I had my daughter in 2006, but I'm still a long way from Onederland. Gotta keep keepin' on! BTW I finally figured out a way to get a big dose of protein every day that I actually enjoy. Iced protein coffee! 10 oz of skim milk (or whatever milk you like) 1 scoop of Isopure (or any brand) unflavored protein powder 1 teaspoon of instant coffee 1 tablespoon of flavored coffee creamer Throw all that in a blender bottle, shake the hell out of it, then pour over ice. You could also blend it with ice to turn it into a frappuccino-type drink. Nutrition info: 240 cal, 2g fat, 20 g carbs, 20g sugars*, 35 g protein *These are mostly the sugars in milk, which are not simple sugars and do not cause dumping syndrome etc. You can cut about 5g of sugar by using sugar-free or unflavored creamer, but I love my vanilla creamer.

    Post-op Pain/Incisions

I had a Loop DS on July 24th. I had 5 incisions, and one drain in my upper left abdomen. My largest incision was above and to the right of my belly button and is about 1.5 inches. There is another incision to the left of my belly button that is about an inch. The other incisions are all about the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. I have to say this surgery was harder than any other I've had. I usually wake up fine from anesthesia and bounce right back. This time I was so nauseated. I had some pain, but mostly in the back and I think that was gas. The day after surgery I was still nauseated and I had to go for my swallow test, and threw the contrast right up. I ended up staying 3 nights because of the nausea. My husband was so worried because I was really out of it for the first 2 days, which has not happened to me with surgery before. Even though I felt so sick those first couple days, I walked as much as I could. The nausea was gone the day I went home, and I haven't had any since. I had to keep my drain in until 10 days post op when I saw my surgeon, and I was sore after it was removed. I also ended up having pain in that area and in my back, and actually took a Percocet. It was so weird because I hadn't had much pain since coming home. I later found out it was a kidney stone which I've never had before. Anyway, overall, the post op pain was pretty mild for me, but I did have a couple days of bad nausea and some vomiting in the hospital, but now I feel almost 100% back to normal! I just got to soft foods yesterday, and I feel great now that I finally get to eat! Sent from my moto g(6) using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I have BCBS also, and you have to read the requirements very carefully. They basically require 6 months of monitored weight loss plan, documented every month by the PCP. Failure to be able to lose 10% of body weight, in spite of the supervised program is qualifying for surgery. When I first read the requirements, I thought it said I had to LOSE 10% to qualify - to demonstrate compliance with the program, but that;s not what it really says. I think I stayed about the same weight. I was tipping the 40 BMI, but what really helped me was getting a sleep apnea diagnosis, which lowered the qualifying BMI. BCBS is tricky. Just read those requirements over and over until you understand them thoroughly. As long as your PCP also documents all your weight loss attempts very thoroughly, you should not have a problem. My PCP did an amazing job. She knew how to "play the game" and told me she had never had any of her patients denied WLS.

    Feeling discouraged

First appointment was 12/04/2019, thought I would have been having surgery by now. Does it normally take this long to get through the process?

    DS or RNY

Well it really depends on you. Do you take NSAIDS or feel like you need to because if you have RNY you can't take them anymore. Ever. I mean, you could take tumeric which is natural, but no asprin, naproxen, ibuprofen, etc. I was bouncing back and forth on whether to have the RNY, DS, or Loop DS and in the end I chose the Loop DS. I'm almost 7 months out now and I'm happy with my choice. I have had some weird experiences though lol. I had two issues with constipation which confused the hell out of my surgeons office and they told me I was the first Loop DS patient they'd had that had that issue! x'D Apparently my body processes Iron REALLY well so I only need one multi with iron in it and take two without. Also, when you have to go... you have to go! Your stomach will give you about a 5-10 minute warning and that means you best find a restroom... or is that just me? 🤔 Anyway, in the end it's your life and the choice you make is very much your own. I suggest just looking up all the info you can find maybe making a pro and con list for each surgery and just choosing the one that has more pro's. That's my suggestion. I wish you the best!
  8. I had the sleeve nearly 10 years ago. I gained a lot of weight since then and am blessed with the possibility of a do-over. I had a consultation today to start the process for a revision. An EGD will help the surgeon determine which surgery is best for me--the DS or the RNY, but he suggested I research to get an idea of what I might prefer. Per my reading, the DS is for people with severe morbid obesity (BMI >50), which I do not have. Also, there's supposedly a greater risk of complications from this surgery. However, I read it provides higher weight loss than the RNY. I read about possible ulcers, bowel obstruction, etc and I'm afraid. Is there any way to prevent these issues, or are they just inevitable with any type of bypass surgery? (I know this is a question for my doctor, and I do plan to ask.) Ultimately, like anyone, I just want help to get thin and healthy. I don't want to be sickly or have life-threatening complications as result of weight loss surgery. I want to take full advantage of this 2nd chance, lose all the weight I didn't lose the first time around, and KEEP IT OFF. If my surgeon does not have a firm opinion on which surgery I should get and he leaves the option to me, then I'm not sure whether I would get the DS or the RNY. Do you guys have any information or experience that might help?

    Anyone for August 2020

My pre op diet was 2 protein shakes and a salad with protein. Thats it. I got an cancellation date which made me only do the pre op diet 10 days. My surgeon did not say I had a fatty liver due to my shorter pre op diet. I had my vsg at Blossom in Las Vegas. I am now 4 days post op. I have no regrets with the vsg or Blossom.

Doing ok. Still on mostly liquids. It’ll be four weeks on the 18th. I’ve only lost 10 lbs since surgery which is not as I hoped but I’m sure it’ll pick up once I move around more. I’m still sore and I can’t move around more than 10 minutes. I get winded and get side pain. Praying I’m better before the wedding on 9-19. My gown is a size 20 and I’m hoping I’ll be in an 18 or less in a month...my tailor is standing by...he’s cheering for me too haha.

    Getting Nutrition Info

With the Baritastic app, I've just input the individual ingredients of the recipe I've made and then used the "Create Meal" button to save it to the app. For a salad dressing, I'd say the easiest thing to do would be to make 10 ounces worth of it, input the ingredients and the amounts you used to make the 10 ounces of dressing, save it as a Meal, and then when you use it, just select it from the My Meals tab. If you used 1 ounce of dressing, then select ".1" as the quantity (.2 for 2 ounces, etc.). It's a bit of work up front, but once it's done it goes so much faster.

    Post-op Pain/Incisions

RNY and hiatal hernia repair on July 7. I had minimal pain, except when I woke up in recovery I was in agony. Took a couple of pain pills for about three days, then just Tylenol. My gas pain was minimal, but my abdomen was hugely bloated for a good week. I walked a ton as soon as I was in my hospital room the night of surgery. Every time I woke up during the night I walked a couple of laps in the unit. The surgeon actually told me I was walking too much.😂 5 incisions 1/2-3/4 inch. All were bruised and tender, but no significant pain. I took two weeks off from work because of the hernia repair causing me difficulties with eating (pain and puking) for the first 10 days or so. If it hadn’t been for that, I could have worked week two post-op. I have actually felt great and had tons of energy since surgery. Good luck!
  13. I was thinking about that earlier. It probably does really help you stay centered... and if you do get it off track, it will help to get back on target. I definitely plan to continue on this website like you do. My plan is once I get to my goal - I will have a certain weight limit to not creep up to again. And will start working to lose again. Maybe 5-10 lbs above my goal weight? That is how I am planning it now. One step at a time though. I got to get to my goal first.

    Post-op Pain/Incisions

I have five incisions, the largest is maybe an inch and a half right over my belly button. Other than a general feeling of soreness in my belly, like I did a million crunches, I’ve basically been pain-free! Even gas pain wasn’t bad, but I did walk a TON... I did 3-4 miles the day after surgery. I’m only 10 days out but the incisions are scabbed over. My surgeon seems to have used a glue on them, so no obvious stitches. But I wish you the best of luck!

  16. Below is an edited version from 3 weeks ago when I was conceivably talking about getting a bypass with the medical group. Now the Doctor Thinks a Sleeve Would be Better Then a Bypass. With battling weight most of my life 10 years ago I got a lap band put in. I am now 57 years old, 15 years ago I was diagnosed with type two diabetes At the time my Lap Band was put in my weight was 230 pounds. That might not sound like a lot of weight but for a male 5’8 it was a lot for me. In addition to having type two diabetes I have also had two neck surgeries and three back surgeries over the years. The Lap Band gave me significant weight loss. I got down from 230 to 160-165. I also lowered my Metformin from 1000 mg to 500 mg. I lost approximately 70 pounds of weight and maintained this weight for about nine years. To say that it was an easy road for me would be lying, I was constantly having the band loosened tightened loose and tightened like being on a roller coaster. I had problems with the Lap Band being so tight that I was having major acid reflux problems. In addition to that I had some small ulcers around my esophagus next to my Lap Band. Last year I decided I had enough of this and had a lot of Fluid taken out of my band. The major acid reflex went away immediately however, I still have some ongoing small minor heartburn and a small cough because the Lap Band is still in place but a lot of the fluid has been taken out. Because of that removal of fluid I have gained back for the first time in 10 years 35 pounds. Now I am back up to taking the same amount of diabetic medicine Metformin 1000 mg because of the 35 pound weight gain. The bariatric center in Los Angeles is now recommending that I conceivably switch to a Sleeve. This decision is not completely final yet and the acid reflex problems I’ve had for so many years which only really developed soon after getting the Lap Band 10 years ago. As in all surgeries there are risk concerns for changing the body anatomy, any advice or opinions from anyone that has been down this same kind of road would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and concern. Hopefully one day I can help someone else.

    Guilt

I see and have experienced both sides. back when i had my Lapband i thought i would only tell a few people. Well we all know that a lot of people have trouble keeping things to themselves. I worked with about 500 women in a major freight company and if one knows.... they all know. At first, i said... i'll only tell my husband, a few close friends and a few family members..... I would say... i'm eating right and exercising... Which were both the truth. After about a year, more and more people knew. I no longer worked at that place. So then when people said.... hey i heard you had WLS, i would come clean and say yes. I had a few that made remarks that i took the "easy" way out. Or they would do the look... you know the up and down scan with the judgmental eyes. 89lbs later and i stopped caring. 2017 the band came out.... 8/28/2019 i chose to get sleeved (173lbs). This time i told NO ONE except my husband. My co-workers only know that i took a couple of days to have a hernia repaired (which was true). They also know that i had started losing last year for my upcoming wedding (9/26/2019).... I lost 20lbs by the wedding date. They also knew that i had started Crossfit... It has been almost a year and i'm down 52lbs. Co-workers say, you need to stop losing. Neighbors say if you lose anymore you'll blow away.... I just say, i feel great, and leave it at that. 100%.... prefer the not telling.

Arm lift next week - VERY UNPREPARED

Hey, can I ask what your arms look like with the bandages off? I’m scared and nervous but looking into it. I had the lapband removed in 2018, sleeve in 2019 and lost 110lbs in a year. Well actually it was less than a year because I’ve remained the same for the past 8 months. My doctor said it’s not often that someone like me loses that much so easily (I worked hard!) ... but now all of this skin .... I weigh 165 at 5’4 and I’m still considered overweight. I am positive if I got rid of the skin I would lose at least 20lbs and be in the healthy range. Thanks for sharing your story.

    Rant

So my surgeon’s office has a new person working there and they are terrible. When I called pre admission testing to make an appointment they told me they are doing covid testing for all surgical patients but I need a script from my surgeon. Okay. No problem I see them next week I will get one. I go to the office and she is telling me I don’t need one and we are literally going back and forth. She goes in the back and comes back a few mins later w/o the script and says your surgery isn’t scheduled. Excuse me?? It's been set for 8/19 and the insurance company called me over the weekend to say it was approved. Oh was her response and she then finally gives me my script. Then the following week she calls me and tells me I didn’t do the online seminar which I completed before she even worked here. Once I told her I did the seminar because I had to submit my email she was like yes, that’s right. 🙄 TODAY! She calls me a week before my surgery and a week into my liquid diet to say that I don’t have my pulmonary clearance and without that I can’t have the surgery next week. So I am all frazzled since this is taking place at 3:34pm. I go through all my paperwork and guess what?? I have the clearance. I call them back and the office is closed. To add insult to injury my new cookies and cream protein shake came in and it’s nasty and I have a whole case. I was so close to throwing in the towel and ordering a cheeseburger but I didn’t. If you made it this far thanks for listening.

    Brand new sleeve

Hey! I just had mine on the 29th of July. I went home the next day too. I took the norco they provided through day 4 I believe. And I felt like I did need it that whole time. After that, I took Tylenol once or twice and was fine. The hunger rumbles were a HUGE issue for me. But I finally realized that it must have been gas bubbles. I also have 2 little kiddos so I'm constantly preparing food and watching people eat, I just watched them eat Chick fil a for example. And it's hard. It was harder at first. I think I finally turned a corner about 10 days post op with the emotional aspect of other people eating and the hunger rumbles. If you can push through the first two weeks, or however long you're on liquids for, I PROMISE it gets so much better. I ate a cheese stick while they had their (grilled) nuggets and really was mostly fine. Hang in there! It really will get better. Oh, and walk walk walk! But I'm sure you've heard that a million times by now. Hahaha

    Newly sleeved

Hi everyone, Thanks for the replies. My surgeons diet plan seems to be very different to most others, he told me that I could have virtually any liquid I'd like, virtually anything can be blended he said, and as of week 4 according to my diet sheet I can have bread 1/2 times per day. I'm really hoping to avoid that, as my problem has never really been too much of a sweet eater, but where carbs are concerned, I've never been able to help myself, so I'm hoping to steer away from my surgeons recommendations in that respect or I'll never lose any weight! I've managed to get in about 350 calories a day, it's easier now than it was! I'm managing soups and shakes and water much easier than I was a few days ago! Also, i will be keeping away from fruit juices too! Thank you all for your kind advice to my messages! I've been so worried about it all going wrong (I'm a massive worrier!) But almost a week home, I'm realising that it's all going to be fine. I cant believe I'm 10 days out from my operation already!

    The Waiting Game

That must be so frustrating! I really hate having to call and nag people, too. I encourage you to call the office, though. You don't have to be obnoxious about it, just say you're inquiring about the status of your pre-surgery requirements and want to check if there's anything else they need from you. I had to call my surgeon's office a couple of times during the process to prompt them, and if I hadn't, I may not have gotten my surgery yet! The first time, they had told me that a psychologist was supposed to call me to schedule a psychological evaluation, but the psychologist never called, so after a few weeks, I called the surgeon's office to ask about it. it turned out that the psychologist had closed his office indefinitely due to COVID-19, and my surgeon's office got me scheduled with someone else. Who knows how long I would have waited if I hadn't called? The second time, I had completed all my requirements and was waiting for a call about scheduling the surgery, and when I didn't hear from them, I called to ask. It turned out that I had missed their call earlier that day about my insurance denying me and I had to go back to my PCP to get a letter. My phone sometimes goes screwy and sends calls straight to voicemail without registering a missed call, so i wouldn't have known if I hadn't called to check. As long as you're polite (and I bet you are that kind of person), they won't think you're a troublemaker.
  23. I hate to ask this question but I am month 4/6 in pre-approval process. My whole life I have tried anything you can think of and I have been so very sure each one was the answer. I usually lose between 8-12 pounds each attempt and then stall. It's been the same thing pre-op. I did intermittent fasting with being gluten free since 7/31/19, no problem fasting 20-22 hours but when I would try to do alternate day fasting or 24 hour fasting I would gain with the lower calories. I have researched starvation mode and most experts agree it does not exist. I ended up averaging 19 hours and plateaued at 12 pounds after 3 months and then started gaining again even with the fasting. When I did my pre-op I was at one of my lower weights (my weight plot looks like shark teeth) and was told I was not allowed to gain at all during the process or my surgery would be denied. As part of my pre-op I have continued intermittent fasting for an average of 16 hours but I also gave up all grains, dairy, sugar, and soy. I have lost another 12 pounds for a total of 24 but cannot get any lower. I've played with calories, food types, anything I can think of. I track all my calories and activities and range 1200-1500 being mostly on the lower end of the range and get at least 30 mins of walking 5 days a week. I have no emotional issues with food and am very disciplined. I do have Hashimoto's thyroiditis but my hormone ranges are good according to my bloodwork. My thyroid is almost not existent except for a large nodule so my endocrinologist wants me to have me thyroid removed in addition to the sleeve. My big fear is that there is something weird with my metabolism and that I'll have the surgery and not be successful. It sounds crazy to even say that but this is a support group and that is my truth.

    August surgery

My surgery is 8/19. I’m currently on day 7 of my 14 day liquid diet. It has had its moments and yesterday I was super hungry and these shakes just weren’t cutting it so I listened to music and that helped.

    Long meal times

At 3 months out from surgery it still took 20-30 minutes to eat and egg with 1/4c of cheese and 1/4 cup of bell peppers. Around 5-6 months I could finish that in 15 minutes. At around 1 year I can eat that amount and maybe a half piece of toast in 10-15 minutes so a normal pace. If it is slider food like soup or yogurt even with some fruit mixed in I can eat a cup of yogurt in 5 minutes. A 1-1/2 cup of salad with toppings in 10-15 minutes. I am still limited to a dinner of 2-3 oz of meat and 1/4-1/2 c of veggies and can eat almost all of it in 10-15 minutes on an empty stomach but if i had something to eat an hour before that then I can only eat half of the dinner and I go back in 20-30 minutes and finish it.
