    Eating habits prior to surgery

I ate healthy and under 1500 calories a lot of the time and never lost weight. Some of the time I would go through periods of eating a lot more and most of it was junk, and strangely that didn't seem to cause any more weight gain. I will clearly state that I ate more than I burned. It's not a total mystery how I got to 300+ pounds, though I never ate as much or as bad as one would think to get to that weight. The sleeve allowed me to get my calories under 600 per day for the first several months, and then I kept it around 800 for the rest of the first year. I now know that I have to eat under 900 calories a day or I will not lose weight. That was a shocking revelation to me. I maintain at around 1400 calories, and gain at any more than that. I would like to lose that last 10 pounds, but can't seem to keep my calories low enough, long enough to achieve that. I look and feel pretty good, so I'm not too worried about it any more.
  2. I went for an upper GI barium swallow this am as I have been having trouble with my band the past month and having almost everything come back up and feeling unusually tight. The upper GI was aborted after the first swallow as there appeared to be near complete obstruction and on the report the radiologist recommended urgent referral to a barbaric surgeon. I live two airplane rides away from my original surgeon, so he had set me up with a general surgeon who worked under him to do my adjustments. I see him first thing tomorrow morning to have fluid taken out. How much, I don't know yet (already freaking out about that and the possible weight gain and how long until I can get the fluid back in). I am also waiting on an emergency CT scan to check for band placement, position and possible slippage. My general doctor is putting this in place, so I am just waiting on that. For those who have had this happen before..... How much fluid comes out? Does it resolve on its own? How long until fluid can go back in? I need some reassuring answers please. I have been banded since 2008. Always been on the tighter side of restriction. Had some fluid taken out last fall and things were good. But a month ago, it got so tight that I can barely get liquids down some moments. But then in that same day, I can manage some food. Not without a lot of it coming back up though. Which leads my original surgeons office to believe there is a slip.
  3. I have Aetna and was never told it would be an issue if there was weight gain during pre-op. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. I'm just curious & don't mean to sound selfish but I don't have any kids and all my friends kept telling me that I should have had a kid before I had bypass (04/03) but I didn't & I felt that I'm not ready for kid(s) I'm 27 & still it's like I kind of question should I have had kids or a child before getting the surgery... because of future weight gain when I decide too in which it's not on my mind the way the economy is and I'm still trying to reach other goals then weight lost but I guess I'm saying I don't want the weight gain but then again having a child or kids is not my concern either but did I do it wrong?

    Gaines 4lbs 3weeks post op

It could be anything. Water weight (especially if your cycle causes weight gain at particular times), constipation (yes *that* weighs a lot), not weighing at the same time each day, broken scale, body just being weird . . . and hang on, because your body will continue to be weird. Minor fluctuations like this will continue to happen. What you really need to pay attention to is long-term trends. I would suggest either weighing yourself less frequently or using something like trendweight.com to see the bigger picture and get away from having little blips stress you out. Good luck!

    Help trying to adjust.

Hi- I just want to let you know that this will get easier! I remember at the very beginning thinking it was taking too much thought and how was I going to be able to have a band and a life! But it works out. I'm not sure why you have only eaten mashed potatoes and eggs. Is it because you are afraid to try other foods? My doctor had me on soft proteins four days after surgery and that meant I could eat eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, refried beans, cottage cheese...lots of stuff. As long as you follow the post-op instructions from your doctor you aren't going to hurt anything and you should be eating more than it sounds like you are eating. Instead of mashed potatoes, though, you should be eating protein. Your body is trying to heal and protein is what helps it to do that. Don't be afraid. Take it slowly and follow the rules for eating that I'm sure your doctor told you about (eat slow, chew well, small bites etc.) As for the weight gain, yes it is quite normal and don't stress out about it. The month or two after surgery is not for weight loss, it is for healing. You have fluid and swelling from the surgery and weird things are happening to your body. Don't worry about it. Do what your doctor told you to do and you are going to be fine.

    Stupid scale!

How did you do in the time before this past month? Or was this your first month? Has your period historically affected your weight? Take a close, hard look at your food diaries. You may find some choices or quantities that, on paper, will elicit an "Ooooh." Show a week's worth to the practice RD; he/she may spot things that you're unaware of. Do you record everything that goes down your gullet? You're sure? I've never heard of weight-gain from eating to lose. All things are possible, but not probable. There's a reason that you'll discover. Surgery won't stop you from being hard on yourself if you're hard on yourself habitually. Separate out the facts. The purpose for surgery is to lose weight, that's it. The emotional, behavioral and other changes you'd like to make or see are under separate-but-related categories. I think you'll better focus on the first if you don't conflate the whole shebang.
  8. My daughter is 17. She knows the pitfalls of dieting. My years of eating one meal a day as a teenager and into college led to my 75 lb weight gain when I was pregnant with her. When your body is used to living on 750-1000 calories per day and suddenly you eat 2000, you put on a LOT of weight. She loves food and does not diet, yet she is a healthy 125 and is very active. She fully supported my decision and sees what a wonderful impact this has had on my life and the life of my family. Isn't it amazing how a happier healthier mom can lead to a happier family?!

    Humm... Where do I start?

Like everyone else here, I have a weight problem! (glad I got that off my chest! ) I went from a very active job to an office job and in 3 yrs I went from a size 9 to a size 18!! That was 15 ys ago. Ive tried every diet I heard of. Ive gotta admit WW does work if you go to the meetings EVERY week and truely WATCH what you eat. I lost 27 lbs the first time I went, and I felt great! The only reason why I stopped going was because I got pregnant,so of course there was weight gain, and up 2 sizes. Now at a size 22, Ive had ENOUGH!!!!!!!! My dad had about 11 siblings, all of which have passed away from obesity/heart disease before age 60 except for 1. I want to live a long heathy life, I want my kids to understand how important it is to be healthy! About 3yrs ago I pondered on the idea of Gastric Bypass, but I wasnt fat enough (imagine that). I did go back to WW, but I had a much harder time committing with my new schedule. Recently a close friend/relative decided to have bypass, I didnt even think about myself ( I guess I just came to accept being fat is me! lol) and we'd talk about her weight loss and her goals etc. Then one day I was talking to my mother in law, I didnt realize that she had researched the lapband for her self, and she suggested that we go to a seminar together. I was a little unsure when I left, just because of the foreign object in your body but after a few prayers I got over it pretty quick!! So I made an appt. w.Dr.O on 3/24/09, the girls in the office were very friendly and comforting! So thats about where Im at, Ive had several tests done.. 4/3 Upper GI/Chest Xray 4/9 Pulm Funct Test 4/14 Psych Eval/Nutritionist 4/21 Ekg/labwork 4/22 Echo 5/8 Sleep study My insurance does not require anything extra, thank god!! I do have to pay about 5k out of pocket, but it is so worth it!! Iam addicted to this website!! I love to read the testimonials from everyone! I have decided that I AM ready for a life change!!! I want this more than anything!! I want my family to be healthy, and I have to be the one to make that happen!! So let the journey begin!!!!!!!

  11. Hm, I had my first surgery in 2001. I don't know though if my weight would be different if I didn't have these intolerances and complications. If you maintained for 10 years - do you have any idea what caused the weight gain? Like having a new job and being less active or entering retirement or something like this?
  12. Thanks for talking me off the ledge. :lol I did get that whoosh this morning and have updated my ticker. I am now at 34.9 on BMI, which takes me out of the 'severely obese' category for the first time in nearly a decade. And I'm at 70 pounds gone. So today I am happy. And Chris, you are right - at the VERY least, I should avoid the scale for a few days after I return from a business trip. Because the reading I get is never right - it's not true weight gain. I suppose that I've gone without a scale all during the trip and I'm anxious to make sure I didn't screw up, so I climb on. But this is a case where it does cause me negative anxiety, so perhaps my rule should be that I get on the scale 2 days AFTER I get home.
  13. I was sleeved in July 2014. Began at 240 lbs and got as low as 140. I maintained at 145 for 2 years. The last 6 months, I've been eating more and noticing the scale going up. I am now 155. I'm panicking because I don't EVER want to go back to where I was. But, I'm hungry all the time. Previously, after surgery my Spouse would have to make me eat. I had my surgery in Tijuana. So I'm not sure who to see in United States to address this. Could my sleeve be broken?
  14. Sleeve nov 2016 highest weight 277 lowest 150 in August 2018 gained 29 pounds since August. Was put on Zoloft for anxiety last spring. Had maintained weight for over a year. Didn’t change diet or exercise. Anyone else experience this?
  15. Has anyone used Syntec birth control pill? I am trying to decide which method will be best cause I do not want to gain weight. My doctor's opinion is just whatever I what to use she is ok with it. Any suggestions on pills or other devices that have worked without weight gain would be appreciated.

    Percentage lost

My doc told me the weight loss pretty much caps off at 2 years, so if you haven't reached goal by that time, you probably won't be getting any more help from the sleeve. He said that your body does adjust at that point to the amount of food and level of activity, and you would be back to working hard "the old fashioned way" to lose weight/gain muscle. But he did say that he wanted to see me hit his goal within 1 year or so. Thing is, I have no idea what his goal for me is actually (guess I need to ask?). He mentioned early on that he wants "70% of my excess weight off" but I have no idea what he considers excess weight since going by standard height/weight measurements won't work for every body type, especially mine (I'm a big boned, big boobed girl and always have been even as a teen before I gained all my weight). I have MY goals, and I'm pretty sure I'll come darned close (and be thrilled with where I end up). I honestly don't care what he wants me to be, I'll stick with my own ideas about what weight will be a happy place for me.

    Ughhhh

I was told it is wise to reprogram your eating habits during the honeymoon stage the first year of surgery, so that by the time you are healed totally you will not eat all these foods that got you to the sleeve in the first place. Weight gain is unavoidable if you keep your old habits and old favorite foods.
  18. I had a RNY gastric bypass surgery on 16 May 2013. As I worked my way through the recovery process, I decided to publish a short article called "How I Survived Bariatric Surgery". It is available at http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf This is my before and after photograph at around the 6 month mark. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Operation.jpg Since I am now 27 months post-op, I felt it was time to publish an update to the original document. It is called "How I Survived Bariatric Surgery, Part II". It is available at http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf I have been in the "Maintenance" phase for 20 months now. I know many people are wrestling with the fear of weight gain after they bottom out. This "Part II" article documents the approach that I used.
  19. I had lap band surgery 2014.. lost about 60 pounds. Started having problems 2017.Emergency surgery for removel in July. Dr would not convert to sleeve too thin.. I now have gained at least 25 pounds, is this normal?
  20. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's metabolism," it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism. The estimates vary, but approximately 10 million Americans have this common medical condition. In fact, as many as 10% of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency. One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism in weight gain or increased difficulty in losing weight. Because the body is expecting a certain amount of thyroid hormone the pituitary will make additional thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in an attempt to entice the thyroid to produce more hormone. This constant bombardment with high levels of TSH may cause the thyroid gland to become enlarged and form a goiter (enlarged thyroid). Left untreated, the symptoms of hypothyroidism will usually progress. Rarely, complications can result in severe life-threatening depression, heart failure, or coma. Goiters and some other thyroid conditions can be treated with radioactive iodine therapy. The aim of the radioactive iodine therapy (for benign conditions) is to kill a portion of the thyroid to prevent goiters from growing larger or producing too much hormone; I feel that rather than focusing on the weight gain, the better focus should be correcting the enlarged thyroid. I recommend you discuss this issue with your doctor.
  21. My last visit in Sept at the surgeons office, they told me next visit in October that they will be scheduling the date. I emailed the insurance coordinator to ask her if that means it's already approved. She said no, that I sill have to finish up my 4 visits/3 months. I just don't know why they would schedule the date without having the approval. Sounds odd, no? And besides weight gain...what would be a reason for denial? I lost 3 lbs from my first weigh in, but would I be denied if I gained anything over my first weigh in...or if I gain any of those 3 lbs back,is that considered grounds for denial as well?
  22. I am required to have 6 months of nutritional counseling. There is no specified amount, but I have to lose a little every month. Any weight gain, and I can be denied. I'm 2 months in. Planning for surgery end of November early December. I am using fitness pal with the goal so losing 1 lb. per week. It automatically adjusts the calorie intake based on my high protein low carb diet. I have managed to lose weight, some came from having a stomach bug, but I'll take it. I already feel the difference in my knees. I'm just taking it one step at a time. I didn't get this big overnight, and I'm not going to lose it overnight...until I get the surgery. Lol. I wish you well on your journey. Lucretia
  23. Yes, it would be interesting to compare body fat/lean mass ratios, blood chemistry etc. And I think the biggest telling factor is whether they keep the weight off. People who dont exercise are way more likely to regain. Exercise is a huge preventative factor in preventing weight gain and regain.
  24. p1Sz

    TWO month stall!

I agree on changing things up. I was hardcore low-carb but found when I increased carbs, weight starting coming off. I'm not saying that's what you should do. Just saying trying something new might be worth a shot. You mention grazing. That's also where I got in trouble. The more I stick to regular meals, the better for me. My worst weight loss weeks correlated with lots of grazing. Hang in there. You will figure it out. It just takes time to understand your body. You might also discuss Wellbutrin with your doc. It's in a different class from Prozac, but generally has less weight gain (and for some actually has weight loss) compared to SSRIs like Prozac. If you're open to it, you might also consider talk therapy. You're going through major changes, and trying every tool available is not a bad idea. You're not alone. Many of us have been where you are.
  25. I am scheduled for surgery on Aug. 18th. I last seen my surgeon in April and weighed 239lbs. I was scheduled for surgery on 6/6/09 but was denied by insurance. We appelled and now i'm approved and almost there. Here's my problem...i got the i'll never eat again syndrom and ate EVERYthing in sight!!! I'm now at 250 and so nervous about my preop visit on Wed. with my surgeon. I'm scared he want think i'm serious about my commitment to this because of my weight gain. Did anyone else have this problem? I feel awful about this but am ready for my new life. I also was told origianaly i would have no preop diet.
