  1. It seems we aren’t alone and many of us are in the same headspace. when I’m having a ‘positive polly’ day. I pop on some tight clothes, do my hair, put make up on and feel great and remind myself how far I have come. I look back at photos from a year ago and create comparison photos to remind me actually how lucky I am that I have managed to get through this. My health is much better. I am much happier in general…. however we all have those days where we feel a little bloated or chubby. Clothes don’t seem to feel right, we find bits of skin or something we never noticed before that now starts to annoy us and we concentrate so hard on the smaller issues such as that damn scale!! I also crave attention from others to tell me how skinny i am and how great I now look.. i guess the conclusion is —— it doesn’t matter what size you are. What the scale says… or how your clothes fit you. We will ALWAYS find flaws and bits we aren’t happy with. We looked at ‘skinny’ people and longed to be them because from the outside we assumed they were perfectly happy with their bodies.. truth is they had hang ups just like us.. maybe just not as noticeable. but we will continue to work towards changing our minds.. we changed our bodies and now it’s about learning to live and LOVE our new us… (can you tell I’m having a positive polly day )
  2. "Exact Number" - That is the perfect way of putting it. I realize intellectually that the number really doesn't matter... but it does to ME! It's about having a goal and meeting that goal. Until I do, it feels like unfinished business for lack of a better term. @catwoman7 I can completely relate to eye-rolling in the past when people have bemoaned a 10lb weight loss issue - I just wanted to say "hold my beer and watch this!" Or my favorite... "I've gained 5lbs and I just have to get it off." - My thoughts "You vain *#&$, try losing 100lbs..." Again, now I can totally relate to panic mode if there's that much of a change - Ah... skinny people problems... I consider myself beyond lucky to have them now!

    End goal weight

I set my own goal weight, my surgeon does not set them as a general rule, as many don't. I picked a weight at the very high end of "healthy" BMI, borderline "overweight" category. This also aligns to the 70% of excess weight loss average for WLS, based on my starting weight. Knowing that I have been obese my entire life, my goal is to just be as healthy as possible. If I could get to a weight that is in that range, that would be great! That being said, I know that even that weight is likely a stretch, so I'm focusing more on other metrics than the scale (lab results, how I'm feeling in my body, how I feel when I'm working out, etc.).

    Whats wrong with me?

wait loss DOES tend to be slower with revisions - BUT....you may just be in a stall right now.

    January Surgery buddies

Hi Dcsjoc, I myself just had the sleeve surgery on 1/13/22, and I can tell you the days just prior, I was feeling second thoughts. Mine I think was a mixture of two things. One was I have already been doing great losing weight on the pre-surgery diet so maybe I don't need to do it, and the second was the feeling of loss, anger, and frustration over all the things that I will no longer be able to eat and also the amounts. I realized that both (in my case) are due to fear and control. Fear of losing comfort and wanting to control everything. I have to keep reminding myself that I did not in fact have control and to keep out of fear I have to stay in the moment and not let my head think about results and the future. I have to stay in the process and simply take it step by step. Now that I am on the post-surgery diet it's funny how much I miss the protein shakes. The message boards/forums here on this site have helped me so much. I hope the same for you.

I've regained the weight I lost

Please don’t forget to contact your Surgeon/team. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for their help. Perhaps you can get a good look at how to optimize your diet with a nutritionist, habit building with a therapist and there are a lot of new weight loss medications recently approved that may help before revision surgery is needed. Good Luck ❤️

    Low BMI pre op question

I think you are getting upset at people for just sharing and trying to help you out. Ultimately it is your body and your life. I was mandatory therapy by my surgeon before I had it so if you have a good Dr he/she should have you do that preop anyway. If not I would ask them for a referral or seek another Dr. You need a therapist who understands eating disorders and WLS. I hope the best for you! But be patient with people on here and don’t ask for advice and get angry at us. A lot of people have struggled with weight their entire life - I never did until 2018 when I was in an accident and after a few surgeries and a week in the hospital I was on a year of steroids. I went from 135 to 245 in a year and fought to get it down to 227 before I chose WLS. I’ve lost 30 pounds and am happy with that but frustrated I couldn’t do it myself. So when someone starts off at 300+ and sees you have a BMI under 30 it is frustrating to see you feel you need the surgery rather than do it on your own. I started with 35 BMI today my BMI is 31 - today after surgery on 12/22/2021 and 30 pound weight loss, you are lower than me - see my point? For the most part I feel people on here are very kind but also speak the truth 99% of the time. Again it’s your life and your body but don’t get so angry with all of us trying to help you. Good luck I’m leaving this post. It’s becoming a bit toxic for me I do wish you the best in whatever you choose

    Low BMI pre op question

Mexico will do anyone. I know a lady that needed 25 pounds off - as per her I thought she looked great - went to Mexico got it done. So yeah there’s Drs that do it regardless of your BMI or weight loss amount needed.

    Struggling

Hi Everyone... So i am only one week post op with a robotic gastric sleeve. I am feeling so much bloating, gas and a little pain. It's hard to tell if its pain or hunger. I have only loss 8lbs so far is that normal or should i have lost more??? I see people post they lost 20 or 30 and i think am i doing something wrong? I do well with getting in the 60g of protein but not sure if i am getting in enough water. The struggle is real.

    Just not hungry.

My Dr told me set an alarm I’m to eat 6 small meals a day around 200 calories. Honestly I just turn the alarm off and finish what I’m doing 1/2 the time I forget until the next alarm goes off. I’m lucky to hit 700 calories a day but I’m only 4 weeks post op. Take some hair and nail Vitamins I had someone who had VSG tell me that and she didn’t loose very much like not even noticeable. Food is yucky to me too but I know my body needs nutrition. Good on the weight loss! Hope you can find something you like!
  11. 4 weeks out today VSG 12/22/21, and my Nutritionist started letting me eat real food ie soft real food Saturday and I had some chicken omg it was Heaven. Started the liquid diet before thanksgiving so it’s been awhile for me since I’ve eaten real food. My weight was 197 today so 30 pound total loss from liquid to today. The only thing I’m dealing with is I’m severely allergic to eggs now - big welts so Dr saw them said yep full blown allergy and my tummy hates Beans - all Beans I’ve tried them refried, hummus and I made pinto beans with ham for the family - had them in the crockpot 12 hours ate a few chewed well and back up they came. So I hope this resolves because I eat a lot of beans pre the VSG. I totally forgot to eat most of the mid morning to about 4 today and only got in around 500 calories. Other than that I’m super excited about where I am at. I still feel tenderness if I over do things on my right side where they removed the stomach but that’s it! No brain fog or vision issues at all.  Glad to see you guys doing good and glad to finally be moving from the dreaded stall lol!

    Low BMI pre op question

I agree with what @ShoppGirl said. Many use not just your weight before the pre surgical diet but your weight when you begin the whole approval process. Have you been approved? You said you’re committed to surgery in April. Have you begun your approval process? Your weight at surgery may not be a consideration at all but ask your surgeon or team to be sure. The surgery is a tool & like any tool if you don’t use it & take advantage of what it can offer, it won’t work. Many of the benefits post surgery (like loss of appetite & hunger) are only temporary. The surgery is not a guarantee of permanent weight loss. That is up to you. Your physiology & psychology will influence how successful you are. As @ShoppGirl said if you don’t make permanent changes to how, why & what you eat you will regain your weight. It’s a simple truth. But one you need to be fully aware of when making your decision to have surgery. It may be helpful if you see a therapist who specialises in bariatric patients & eating disorders. Your surgeon, doctor or medical team should be able to recommend someone. Many, many people here have sought support from a therapist before & after surgery. It’s not easy to reflect on your eating habits & drives (cravings, emotions, etc.) alone & a therapist will help you work through them & the questions & concerns you have. All the best.

    Low BMI pre op question

Wait a second, I thought this was the support forum for weight loss surgery. Obviously there’s more to my story just as all of you have your own struggles. “Just eat right” we have all heard before. I’ve tried drugs, hypnosis, every diet out there. Overweight people know more about diets than anyone ever will. That doesn’t mean I’m not a good candidate for surgery. I’m trying to avoid negative eating behavior until I get my surgery which I feel like is the best answer for me. So suggestions for that would be helpful and how to best prepare for surgery . Thank you, Goddesslola and Shopgirl. You are actually answered my question.

    Low BMI pre op question

I had a 35 BMI and was worried about dropping too much weight on the pre op diet and worried I needed a buffer pound or two. Turned out for my team it didn’t matter how much you lost on pre op diet, they go by your weight before that diet when deciding if you qualify for the surgery. Just know that if you go back to old ways post surgery that you will gain it back just as you would with a regular diet. The restriction and the temporary loss of appetite (most have this) makes it a little easier to lose the weight but you have to change your habits to keep it off. I like to think of it as getting a clean slate. But it’s real easy to dirty that slate up again if you don’t take full advantage and make the necessary changes.
  15. Hi! I'm exactly 4 weeks post surgery and doing pretty good. The weight loss has slowed a bit but still making progress. It's been amazing seeing the weight come off and fitting into some of my old clothes again. I'm still in the puree'd stage for another week, so now starting to get creative with fish, meat, and anything else I can ask the wife to mash up. There haven't been any major setbacks except for a severe gout flare up that has been hampering my walking since week 2. I'm drinking upwards of 70 oz's of water a day and still can't seem to shake the soreness and pain in my toe joint from the flare up. Other than that, it's full steam ahead!! Glad to hear your success!

    Not losing anything??

Stalls are not unheard of here. they are really common and to be expected with weight loss surgery. So tell us a little more about you (it would really help if you filled in your profile...height, start weight, current weight, surgery or procedure)... Have you lost 26lb since surgery , since before pre-op surgery...lost more but gained weight since surgery?

    Clothes shopping weirdness...can you relate?

Totally relate to this. Not from this weight loss episode but from one years ago when I dropped 4 sizes in a few months (VLCD - I know, I know). My brain took *months* to catch up with my body so shopping took forever. I started off in the changing room with clothes that were ridiculously big, then brought in the next size down, and so on. Hope your brain catches up with all your good work very soon and enjoy your shopping (not for leggings, LOL)! ❣️

    Pouch reset

I can tell you as a woman that breast fed and produced barely enough milk, the hunger is beyond imagination. A whole large pizza with tons of toppings was one meal! The hunger was that ferocious! Those hormones take about a year to reset and now you are evaluating your goals. I agree with the above, start with your team. Journal to weigh pros and cons of more surgery or weight loss. Honestly, after month three I realized the rest of the weight loss is entirely up to me. Surgery is not a magic bullet. Weight loss is work no matter how you do it. How hard and consistent is really up to you.
  19. Hi all. Wanted to check in and see how folks are doing? I had my sleeve 12/9 and the weight loss is slowing already. Nutritionist says I’m right on track but it sure is hard not to see the scale moving. I’m tracking 100%, hitting my protein and staying well within calories. It can’t stay stalled forever right? also how the heck do you update current weight? I figured it out
  20. Just to be clear, going from a sleeve, band etc to a bypass is a conversion of a previous surgery, to another bariatric solution. Revision retains and modifies the original procedure such as a gastric bypass. So you have had a conversion to a different type of weight loss solution. There should be no reason why it would not be successful as long as you abide by your new surgery protocols.

    Anthem BCBS, Illinois

Hello, all. A bit nervous with my first post. It's been less than a week since I got a new general practitioner (the previous one retired) and formally raised the idea of (probably) gastric bypass surgery. I haven't done any of the consultations, finding a surgeon, etc, that's all in the future. But one thing I can worry about and start to plan for in the present is insurance. I am in Illinois and have Anthem BCBS. Something I see listed on their requirement is: Past participation in a weight loss program; and Inadequate weight loss despite a committed attempt at conservative medical therapy (for example, comprehensive lifestyle interventions, including a combination of diet, exercise, and behavioral modifications); and Anyone have any experience with that, or with Anthem BCBS? Because to my skeptical eye that just looks like a catch-22 way to deny the claim: "Oh, you lost weight? Don't need surgery, then, do you? Oh, you didn't lose weight? Not committed, I guess. Tough luck, though."
  22. Hey please know you got this. I have been beating myself up for needing a revision. Had leave to bypass may 19. I am outpacing my first weight loss by a lot. I’m wiser now. Every single day is a choice and you will be successful if you make good choices more days than not.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello! Long time lurker, first reply. I’m going to be sleeved on 2/28. I had my EGD this week, small hernia found that will need to be fixed. I have a few more preop appointments next week. I started adapting to my new lifestyle months ago so slowly, so I’m ready, I started at 330 in July. I’m at 303 today. I don’t know how to put my finger on it but all my attempts at weight loss did not feel like this. I think I’m just over all the limitations I have. I have advanced osteoarthritis and I’m just sick of not being able to get around. I’m in Atlanta Georgia. love this forum it has helped me tremendously.

    Post Op Rants!!

I stalled every second week during my first two months post surgery. Frustrating? Yeah, but also totally normal. I was barely consuming 700 calories a day, and we're convinced that that MUST mean we lose weight. How can so few calories result in a stall and weird weight fluctuations, right? Well, the body responds to a prolonged and severe calorie reduction and post-op stress by stalling. It's a normal response, and our poor bodies have a lot of rewiring and adjusting to do after enduring major surgical changes. When I was finally able to eat more and up my calories to around 900 to 1200 a day ... the stalling stopped. I've now been fairly consistently losing, and feel like, after two months of modest weight loss, I've finally hit my "honeymoon period" (which everyone seemed to talk about but I was beginning to think wasn't going to happen for me). So stalls do break. Some go on for 3 weeks or even a bit over that. Others, like me, had them with mind numbing frequency. They're normal, and while it may seem counter-intuitive, super-low calorie intake often causes them.
  25. I had surgery the day after Thanksgiving. I was 7 weeks out this past Friday. I'm struggling. I was/am dehydrated, severely dehydrated. I knew I wasn't drinking enough for a couple of weeks, my skin was very dry and my lips stayed chapped. Last Saturday at 4 PM I started vomiting uncontrollably and at the same time my head was pounding. We were out running errands, my husband had to pull over. I had to take a couple of drinking of water so I'd have something to throw up. I kept heaving on the way home, luckily we were about 6 blocks away. My husband went to Walgreens to get Pedialyte and he was able to talk to the pharmacist. He said classic signs of advanced dehydration. Keep me drinking, so I was doing nothing but drinking this stuff, lactose free milk and chicken broth. Called and was able to talk to my doctor Sunday. He said what I was doing was good. If I started running a fever or 100 or more, go to the ER. Did good until I felt a little better Monday evening, then I made the mistake of trying to eat some stew meat. He wants me to start getting protein shakes in, 100 grams of protein a day. I'm on my third brand, they all make me sick after about 1/4 of the bottle. I can't get in all my supplements; it feels like I'm eating a meal. I am at a loss. I cannot comfortably eat more than an oz of food at a time. Have you had problems with being sick?
