Pea Protein. Suggested By Dr Oz
kyrasgrandma replied to Joy1961's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not really a fan of Dr. Oz so I take everything he says with a grain of salt. I remember I was all excited about the raspberry ketones that he said were safe for everyone. I went to the health food store that sold them here and I talked to the owner. She asked me for a list of my medications and then went to her computer to check my list against her info. As it turned out it would be dangerous for me to take raspberry ketones because I am on an anti depressant. They would react negatively with my meds. Those were my pre banded days when I was desperate enough to try anything and everything to lose weight. -
How do you get your posts to show your personal information at the bottom? My weight, etc...doesn't show up when I post a new thread. Thanks!

Desperate Need of Fill Doctor in FLORIDA
sarah drakes replied to winnk's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I just have been "fired" as a patient, after questioning why after 1200, and 2 years later, I have had no weight loss, and after going to get a barium swallow. Dr. Abbas Shariat in Jacksonville, fl, is a scam artist!!!!!! He has actually put only 0.5 ml in my band!!!!! and I was wondering why I could eat a whole cow, LOL. He will charge 800 for initial visit, and 400 after that!!!!!!! And he will not use flouro, his office staff are rude, and liars!!!! I asked for my medical record and was told they don't do that!!!!!!! Please do not use this doctor, I am so upset, I am a nurse myself, and I knew that there was no restriction, i was literally starving myself, the depression over feeling , wow after all this money, time, and still no weight loss, I wasn't gaining, due to the fact I had learned to literally starve myself, and Dr Shariat kept telling me I wasn't doing it right, all I was eating was chicken, tuna, etc., and I was starving all the time!!!!! Well any hints on a respectable doctor, here in NE Fl, I am going to go back to Dr Kuri in Mexico, if I have too. -
I'm 4 months out, and fortunately I haven't experienced any stalls. what everyone is saying is correct, I exercise all day except when I'm sleeping, I'm not for sure if that is good or bad but, at work I do chair exercises, I walk for an hour on lunch, I walk after dinner, I ride my recumbent bike while watching television and when I'm in bed I do leg lifts until I fall a sleep. I even go to the gym on the weekends, I know crazy right, but I haven't had a stall and I am dropping weight like crazy.

you can see some before and afters of people in that weight range in the other forum. you arent too fat for surgery but that doesnt mean your surgeon wont make you lose a little weight first some do some dont. i think though that bypass might be what they would recommend because you take off more excess weight with it and you have more going in. however most surgeons seem fine to do whichever procedure the patient selects as long as there arent alot of conflicting comorbities (gerd is contradicted for sleeve as an example). welcome to the group

Dr. JLo- First of all, I admire your work that I have seen on Big Medicine. I am such a fan! I have carried twins for 38 weeks (6.4 lbs. each), 19 months later had another c-section, all while having a pre pragnancy weight of 245. Needless to say I have quite an "apron". I feel comfortable with the way the rest of my body is shaping up through exercise. Okay so maybe I want some implants too. I have told myself that I wanted to be 170 before seeking out a PS. I am 5"5" and in a 18 (because I have to tuck in my stomach in my pants). The rest of me looks like a normal person now. It is hard to feel good about this much weightloss when I see that apron everytime I look in the mirror. How much weight in skin can be removed during a TT. When should I seek out a PS in your opinion? Can you recommend someone in DFW for a self pay? Thank you so much!

I don't get along with the ketosis concept, but as the OPs doc suggested, it may accelerate the weight loss. For me, it's not worth the downsides to get to goal in six months rather than seven, assuming that it works as advertised. We are malnourished enough as it is with the limited volume and high protein requirements without adding the ultra low carb restriction to it as well. If I were starting out heavier and needed every trick in the book to get to goal, then it might be worthwhile. At this point, I seem to work better with a reasonable amount of complex carb in my diet, burning more calories with longer and more intense workouts, than when keeping lower carb. But we are all different in how we respond to these things - try the low carb/ketosis diet and see how it works, but don't be afraid to go to a more balanced diet if it doesn't do much for you.

3 months out and no loss
Sabrinaaa replied to Jungle Jen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel your disappointment. I am only one week out, but really felt out of control, since I was gaining back my 8lbs lost since pre/post op. I know after researching that 90% of the weightloss comes from reaching the perfect fill for you, but the other part is chosing wisely. Go back to the drawing board and remember what they told you before you banded about eating the small palm size portions of protein with low carb vegies, 3 times a day and use small portions (1/2 c) of protein shakes in between. I finally got hard on myself last night and decided to stop testing the limits and follow that plan and I already feel better today. I am also a mother of 2 and find staying home can really destroy a good nutrition plan, when you feel like cheating, get the kids in the stroller and go for a walk. Good luck to us all! Go get a fill if you can. -
Revision Supervised Weight Loss Question
Juniper123 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Brief background, got lapband about 11 years ago (starting BMI was 43). I did well and kept off 55 pounds (BMI 33)... until I started aspirating at night. I had a barium swallow which showed a distended esophagus and a endoscopy which showed reflux. Doc said band needs to come out. I had band unfilled, and as I expected, I've gained weight. I've gained about 30 lbs in the last 5 months (current BMI 38). I want to revise to a gastric bypass. I am well aware that I need surgical help to keep at a healthy weight. Prior to banding, and since being unfilled, I'm constantly hungry and never feel full. I finally felt "normal" with the lapband. When I'm not constantly hungry, I can maintain a healthy weight. But, even with the extra 30 lbs, my BMI is still not over 40, which as I understand it, would make insurance coverage easy. (I have Maryland CareFirst BCBS) My doctor has me doing all the things needed for insurance approval for the revision, including being on a supervised diet. But I'm gaining weight. This does not surprise me -- there was a reason I needed surgical weight loss in the first place -- but I'm getting mixed messages from my doctor and from my diet supervisor (who works for his office). Diet supervisor tells me that I'm less likely to get insurance approval due to my weight gain since being unfilled and being on the supervised diet. Doctor has made vague statements saying that the reflux found on the endoscopy may be enough to make it go through insurance successfully. Diet supervisor wants me to lose a significant amount of weight in the coming month, to try to offset my gains, by going on the pre-surgical diet early. Very honestly, I'm hesitant. If I do end up having to get up to a 40 BMI to have the surgery (12 more pounds...), I don't want to yoyo any more than I have to. And if the reflux finding will get me approved, I don't want to starve myself without the benefit of surgical help. Anybody been in any kind of similar situation? I can use any advice or commiseration available. -
Revision Supervised Weight Loss Question
Daddyof4 replied to Juniper123's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Juniper, I was in about the same situation. I got my band in 2012 and started having significant reflux last summer. I had my band unfilled which helped the reflux but I packed on 40 pounds. I went to Inova Bariatrics and talked about revision to bypass; they said I had to go through the whole program again, which I did. I did not have the supervised diet part and I continued to gain weight until I went on the 2-week liquid diet just before surgery. I had the band removed and the bypass done March 21. I have Federal Blue Cross and they approved as soon as I met the requirements, including cardiac clearance, primary care physician clearance, etc. I don't quite get where your diet supervisor is coming from; I had comorbidities in addition to the high BMI - reflux was one of them (high bp was the other). I think your doctor is right that the reflux should be enough because reflux is one of the signatures of the band. I wish I had known that in 2012 - I would have done the bypass then instead. If you stay with that practice you might be stuck (pardon the lapband pun) doing as the diet supervisor commands. Different practices have different rules. I like my practice very much but they're in Fair Oaks and Woodbridge, likely a huge trip for you. Remember, even though the pre-op diet is very difficult the reward will be worth it. You can do this! -
It went great, seriously did not feel ANYTHING!! I have a 10cc band and they usually put in 2cc right after surgery, the PA put in another 2 this morning but when I drank some water it was not going down that well so she took 0.5cc back out. I lost weight for about 2 weeks after my surgery but since then have lost and gained back the same 2 pounds so I am looking forward to having a little more restriction again. The PA said to be on liquids for the next 24 hours then advance as tolerated, I'm definitely going to have to be extra cautious now with taking small bites and chew, chew, chew!!!!

AlbertaGirl17 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am currently in the beginning stages of getting sleeved. I'm having a really hard time finding some approximate wait times for Alberta (Edmonton specifically) in the weight wise clinic. All of the wait times I've found have been from 2010-2013. Thanks! -

3 months out

Everyone that makes this choice to lose weight and become healthier is already a winner. The good thing it's not really a race, it's a life style and we are only in competition with ourselves. I applaud those that lose quickly as well as those who lose slowly... we're all losing. I do get jealous that men lose faster but it all has to do with muscle mass and how differently our bodies are made. I've not been 100 per cent compliant but I don't drink with meals, I don't use a straw and I don't drink caffeine or carbonated beverages. I have indulged in a little bread and Pasta but for the most part... it's Protein and veggies. I have a whole new set of normals now. -
I completed a year of medical weight loss with no luck. I was put on phentramine a week and a half ago and already lost 7lbs. I am happy with how it’s going, but I know as soon as I stop I will gain it right back. I have started the process for vsg, but I’m so scared. I have to wait ten weeks to complete a few insurance requirements and then surgery can be scheduled if I want to go that route. So many mixed feelings! I’ve had therapy and am through with emotional eating. What scares me most is that I’m a single mom to a wonderful six year old little girl. I’ve had a falling out with my family so it’s just the two of us. That makes surgery more difficult. Making a permanent change to my body is scary too. I know deep down it is what I need to do. I want to be able to do everything with my daughter, especially amusement park rides. I’m never want to go on them because I don’t want to be embarrassed if I don’t fit! Anyone else have a similar situation or any advice?

I am on a time crunch but I need to get a journal entry so I can start logging what is going on. I am 2 weeks or so away from surgery. I am scared! I just called the Dr. today to see if my insurance approved the surgery and they have. I think I was half thinking htat I would be denied. Next Monday is Pre-op appt then the following Monday is surgery. I feel conflicted. I am definitely not feeling 100% like I want to do this and I am wondering if this is normal. Of course I am afraid to ask that question at the MD office for fear that they will say "Nope, you aren't ready" and cancel my appt. Am I nuts???? I think I am questioning because since I was told that I had to lose 10 pounds and I have joined Weight Watchers (for the 100th time), I have managed to loae about 17 pounds. I have been going to the gym 5 or 6 days a week and I feel wonderful. There is that little thought that, wow, maybe I can do this myself. But then I look at my history and I am always gung ho for about 3 months or so then I lose steam. Typical diet failure. The other thing is, I plan to continue my WW meetings becauseI find them so supportive. ANother thing I never had before. This particular meeting is thebest I have ever attended and every week I feel really pumped to do my best. Anyway, if I continue to go to WW, am I a fraud??? I have not told anyone about my plans and do not intend to. I willbe weighing in with my friend that doesn't know about my plans to have surgery, and I will basically be lying to her every week. It seems so deceitful. I just know how anti-surgery she is and I don't want to tell her. I don't know what to think. On a side note, I had a good workout today-50 minutes elliptical. I need to do my weights at some point since I did not have time at the gym today (dentist appt). Got a root canal today-lucky me. I made another appt for next week and I actually scheduled it around my workout. Whoever thought that would be a priority! haha.

Hello, I am new to not only lap band surgery scheduled for June 30th, but also to a forum. I am 326lbs and I am so excited to have the surgery. I do have a question that I am having a hard time finding out an answer too. I have PCOS and that makes it hard to lose weight, believe after months of following strict diets and only losing 3 or 4 lbs is very flustrating. Does anyone have PCOS and banded and how are you doing on the weight loss? Thank you for helping. I have learned alot already just reading other threads.

Hi All, I am the Weight Loss Surgery Coordinator and starting a new Lap Band Program at my hospital! I'm really excited about it and I'm here to learn from all of you. I look forward to talking with you in the future!:rolleyes2:

I finished up my 6 month diet yesterday and the insurance coordinator said they will submit today. This is the second time because the first time I tried to use my weight watchers weights but they denied it so I finished up my supervised diet and am hoping or a quick approval! They have 30 days to reply but I am so hoping it doesn't take that long! Anyone else have experience with bcbs of al? I'm actually in Ky. but they chose to go with AL. Any way to speed up the process or a way to find out if I am approved before they send the letter? Thanks

Ill try that thank you. I go for my first fill on saturday im nervous but excited to see if that will jump start the weight loss again!

Two weeks post-op and wondering about the food intake?
Buffy posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am two weeks post op and am very hungry. We are on vacation at the beach and I have four kids to still cook for plus hubby. I am now eating solid food really chewed up. Is this o.k.? I feel that I am cheating and will not lose weight. I haven't been on a scale in five days so I do'tknow is I have lost or not. Should I stop eating normal food chewed really well. I am only two weeks post op. I shouldn't be filled for 4 more weeks. What do I do. I feel fine, except that I am cheating myself. Help. Is this normal to eat so much mushie food? Thanks, Buffy -
Hello Everyone! I'm Michelle but many of my friends call me Angel... Don't let the Dark Angel part scare you, I'm not satanic or anything like that, it's actually a nick name my father gave me when I was little and it just stuck... I'm 39, widowed almost 3 years now and the mother of 2 wonderful young men, 15 and 8 My husband passed away from an accident while trying to learn how to skateboard to spend more time with our boys back in March 2008 and since then, the reality of me being all they have left really hit me hard when my youngest said, "Mommy, we don't want you to die too, please" and it was cause of my weight. I've spent my whole life battling my weight, the roller coasters and emotions are too much and I just know that once I get banned, there will be no more battles, only a war that's been won once and for all. I will be starting my preliminary doctor appointments the first week of Sept and just know that my husband will be on my side guiding me through this from above. Thank you for making this forum available and allowing me to educate myself more before my actual banding comes.

Insurance Approved Today Surgery Date 1/7/2010
ToomuchRN replied to creem4coffee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Congrats on your approval and best wishes on your weight loss journey. I will be looking forward to seeing your success -
Ok, I have to ask...Did you possibly enter in the wrong dates. Because if you were banded in October of 2006 and have lost 55 pounds, I would not be feeling like I should have lost more, I would be at the doctors office demanding to have tests run because I must have some major medical issue wrong with me to have lost that much weight in only 4 weeks.
