    Revision completed

Doing ok. Still on mostly liquids. It’ll be four weeks on the 18th. I’ve only lost 10 lbs since surgery which is not as I hoped but I’m sure it’ll pick up once I move around more. I’m still sore and I can’t move around more than 10 minutes. I get winded and get side pain. Praying I’m better before the wedding on 9-19. My gown is a size 20 and I’m hoping I’ll be in an 18 or less in a month...my tailor is standing by...he’s cheering for me too haha.

    Getting Nutrition Info

With the Baritastic app, I've just input the individual ingredients of the recipe I've made and then used the "Create Meal" button to save it to the app. For a salad dressing, I'd say the easiest thing to do would be to make 10 ounces worth of it, input the ingredients and the amounts you used to make the 10 ounces of dressing, save it as a Meal, and then when you use it, just select it from the My Meals tab. If you used 1 ounce of dressing, then select ".1" as the quantity (.2 for 2 ounces, etc.). It's a bit of work up front, but once it's done it goes so much faster.

    Post-op Pain/Incisions

RNY and hiatal hernia repair on July 7. I had minimal pain, except when I woke up in recovery I was in agony. Took a couple of pain pills for about three days, then just Tylenol. My gas pain was minimal, but my abdomen was hugely bloated for a good week. I walked a ton as soon as I was in my hospital room the night of surgery. Every time I woke up during the night I walked a couple of laps in the unit. The surgeon actually told me I was walking too much.😂 5 incisions 1/2-3/4 inch. All were bruised and tender, but no significant pain. I took two weeks off from work because of the hernia repair causing me difficulties with eating (pain and puking) for the first 10 days or so. If it hadn’t been for that, I could have worked week two post-op. I have actually felt great and had tons of energy since surgery. Good luck!
  4. I was thinking about that earlier. It probably does really help you stay centered... and if you do get it off track, it will help to get back on target. I definitely plan to continue on this website like you do. My plan is once I get to my goal - I will have a certain weight limit to not creep up to again. And will start working to lose again. Maybe 5-10 lbs above my goal weight? That is how I am planning it now. One step at a time though. I got to get to my goal first.

    Post-op Pain/Incisions

I have five incisions, the largest is maybe an inch and a half right over my belly button. Other than a general feeling of soreness in my belly, like I did a million crunches, I’ve basically been pain-free! Even gas pain wasn’t bad, but I did walk a TON... I did 3-4 miles the day after surgery. I’m only 10 days out but the incisions are scabbed over. My surgeon seems to have used a glue on them, so no obvious stitches. But I wish you the best of luck!

  7. Below is an edited version from 3 weeks ago when I was conceivably talking about getting a bypass with the medical group. Now the Doctor Thinks a Sleeve Would be Better Then a Bypass. With battling weight most of my life 10 years ago I got a lap band put in. I am now 57 years old, 15 years ago I was diagnosed with type two diabetes At the time my Lap Band was put in my weight was 230 pounds. That might not sound like a lot of weight but for a male 5’8 it was a lot for me. In addition to having type two diabetes I have also had two neck surgeries and three back surgeries over the years. The Lap Band gave me significant weight loss. I got down from 230 to 160-165. I also lowered my Metformin from 1000 mg to 500 mg. I lost approximately 70 pounds of weight and maintained this weight for about nine years. To say that it was an easy road for me would be lying, I was constantly having the band loosened tightened loose and tightened like being on a roller coaster. I had problems with the Lap Band being so tight that I was having major acid reflux problems. In addition to that I had some small ulcers around my esophagus next to my Lap Band. Last year I decided I had enough of this and had a lot of Fluid taken out of my band. The major acid reflex went away immediately however, I still have some ongoing small minor heartburn and a small cough because the Lap Band is still in place but a lot of the fluid has been taken out. Because of that removal of fluid I have gained back for the first time in 10 years 35 pounds. Now I am back up to taking the same amount of diabetic medicine Metformin 1000 mg because of the 35 pound weight gain. The bariatric center in Los Angeles is now recommending that I conceivably switch to a Sleeve. This decision is not completely final yet and the acid reflex problems I’ve had for so many years which only really developed soon after getting the Lap Band 10 years ago. As in all surgeries there are risk concerns for changing the body anatomy, any advice or opinions from anyone that has been down this same kind of road would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and concern. Hopefully one day I can help someone else.

    Guilt

I see and have experienced both sides. back when i had my Lapband i thought i would only tell a few people. Well we all know that a lot of people have trouble keeping things to themselves. I worked with about 500 women in a major freight company and if one knows.... they all know. At first, i said... i'll only tell my husband, a few close friends and a few family members..... I would say... i'm eating right and exercising... Which were both the truth. After about a year, more and more people knew. I no longer worked at that place. So then when people said.... hey i heard you had WLS, i would come clean and say yes. I had a few that made remarks that i took the "easy" way out. Or they would do the look... you know the up and down scan with the judgmental eyes. 89lbs later and i stopped caring. 2017 the band came out.... 8/28/2019 i chose to get sleeved (173lbs). This time i told NO ONE except my husband. My co-workers only know that i took a couple of days to have a hernia repaired (which was true). They also know that i had started losing last year for my upcoming wedding (9/26/2019).... I lost 20lbs by the wedding date. They also knew that i had started Crossfit... It has been almost a year and i'm down 52lbs. Co-workers say, you need to stop losing. Neighbors say if you lose anymore you'll blow away.... I just say, i feel great, and leave it at that. 100%.... prefer the not telling.

Arm lift next week - VERY UNPREPARED

Hey, can I ask what your arms look like with the bandages off? I’m scared and nervous but looking into it. I had the lapband removed in 2018, sleeve in 2019 and lost 110lbs in a year. Well actually it was less than a year because I’ve remained the same for the past 8 months. My doctor said it’s not often that someone like me loses that much so easily (I worked hard!) ... but now all of this skin .... I weigh 165 at 5’4 and I’m still considered overweight. I am positive if I got rid of the skin I would lose at least 20lbs and be in the healthy range. Thanks for sharing your story.

    Rant

So my surgeon’s office has a new person working there and they are terrible. When I called pre admission testing to make an appointment they told me they are doing covid testing for all surgical patients but I need a script from my surgeon. Okay. No problem I see them next week I will get one. I go to the office and she is telling me I don’t need one and we are literally going back and forth. She goes in the back and comes back a few mins later w/o the script and says your surgery isn’t scheduled. Excuse me?? It's been set for 8/19 and the insurance company called me over the weekend to say it was approved. Oh was her response and she then finally gives me my script. Then the following week she calls me and tells me I didn’t do the online seminar which I completed before she even worked here. Once I told her I did the seminar because I had to submit my email she was like yes, that’s right. 🙄 TODAY! She calls me a week before my surgery and a week into my liquid diet to say that I don’t have my pulmonary clearance and without that I can’t have the surgery next week. So I am all frazzled since this is taking place at 3:34pm. I go through all my paperwork and guess what?? I have the clearance. I call them back and the office is closed. To add insult to injury my new cookies and cream protein shake came in and it’s nasty and I have a whole case. I was so close to throwing in the towel and ordering a cheeseburger but I didn’t. If you made it this far thanks for listening.

    Brand new sleeve

Hey! I just had mine on the 29th of July. I went home the next day too. I took the norco they provided through day 4 I believe. And I felt like I did need it that whole time. After that, I took Tylenol once or twice and was fine. The hunger rumbles were a HUGE issue for me. But I finally realized that it must have been gas bubbles. I also have 2 little kiddos so I'm constantly preparing food and watching people eat, I just watched them eat Chick fil a for example. And it's hard. It was harder at first. I think I finally turned a corner about 10 days post op with the emotional aspect of other people eating and the hunger rumbles. If you can push through the first two weeks, or however long you're on liquids for, I PROMISE it gets so much better. I ate a cheese stick while they had their (grilled) nuggets and really was mostly fine. Hang in there! It really will get better. Oh, and walk walk walk! But I'm sure you've heard that a million times by now. Hahaha

    Newly sleeved

Hi everyone, Thanks for the replies. My surgeons diet plan seems to be very different to most others, he told me that I could have virtually any liquid I'd like, virtually anything can be blended he said, and as of week 4 according to my diet sheet I can have bread 1/2 times per day. I'm really hoping to avoid that, as my problem has never really been too much of a sweet eater, but where carbs are concerned, I've never been able to help myself, so I'm hoping to steer away from my surgeons recommendations in that respect or I'll never lose any weight! I've managed to get in about 350 calories a day, it's easier now than it was! I'm managing soups and shakes and water much easier than I was a few days ago! Also, i will be keeping away from fruit juices too! Thank you all for your kind advice to my messages! I've been so worried about it all going wrong (I'm a massive worrier!) But almost a week home, I'm realising that it's all going to be fine. I cant believe I'm 10 days out from my operation already!

    The Waiting Game

That must be so frustrating! I really hate having to call and nag people, too. I encourage you to call the office, though. You don't have to be obnoxious about it, just say you're inquiring about the status of your pre-surgery requirements and want to check if there's anything else they need from you. I had to call my surgeon's office a couple of times during the process to prompt them, and if I hadn't, I may not have gotten my surgery yet! The first time, they had told me that a psychologist was supposed to call me to schedule a psychological evaluation, but the psychologist never called, so after a few weeks, I called the surgeon's office to ask about it. it turned out that the psychologist had closed his office indefinitely due to COVID-19, and my surgeon's office got me scheduled with someone else. Who knows how long I would have waited if I hadn't called? The second time, I had completed all my requirements and was waiting for a call about scheduling the surgery, and when I didn't hear from them, I called to ask. It turned out that I had missed their call earlier that day about my insurance denying me and I had to go back to my PCP to get a letter. My phone sometimes goes screwy and sends calls straight to voicemail without registering a missed call, so i wouldn't have known if I hadn't called to check. As long as you're polite (and I bet you are that kind of person), they won't think you're a troublemaker.
  14. I hate to ask this question but I am month 4/6 in pre-approval process. My whole life I have tried anything you can think of and I have been so very sure each one was the answer. I usually lose between 8-12 pounds each attempt and then stall. It's been the same thing pre-op. I did intermittent fasting with being gluten free since 7/31/19, no problem fasting 20-22 hours but when I would try to do alternate day fasting or 24 hour fasting I would gain with the lower calories. I have researched starvation mode and most experts agree it does not exist. I ended up averaging 19 hours and plateaued at 12 pounds after 3 months and then started gaining again even with the fasting. When I did my pre-op I was at one of my lower weights (my weight plot looks like shark teeth) and was told I was not allowed to gain at all during the process or my surgery would be denied. As part of my pre-op I have continued intermittent fasting for an average of 16 hours but I also gave up all grains, dairy, sugar, and soy. I have lost another 12 pounds for a total of 24 but cannot get any lower. I've played with calories, food types, anything I can think of. I track all my calories and activities and range 1200-1500 being mostly on the lower end of the range and get at least 30 mins of walking 5 days a week. I have no emotional issues with food and am very disciplined. I do have Hashimoto's thyroiditis but my hormone ranges are good according to my bloodwork. My thyroid is almost not existent except for a large nodule so my endocrinologist wants me to have me thyroid removed in addition to the sleeve. My big fear is that there is something weird with my metabolism and that I'll have the surgery and not be successful. It sounds crazy to even say that but this is a support group and that is my truth.

    August surgery

My surgery is 8/19. I’m currently on day 7 of my 14 day liquid diet. It has had its moments and yesterday I was super hungry and these shakes just weren’t cutting it so I listened to music and that helped.

    Long meal times

At 3 months out from surgery it still took 20-30 minutes to eat and egg with 1/4c of cheese and 1/4 cup of bell peppers. Around 5-6 months I could finish that in 15 minutes. At around 1 year I can eat that amount and maybe a half piece of toast in 10-15 minutes so a normal pace. If it is slider food like soup or yogurt even with some fruit mixed in I can eat a cup of yogurt in 5 minutes. A 1-1/2 cup of salad with toppings in 10-15 minutes. I am still limited to a dinner of 2-3 oz of meat and 1/4-1/2 c of veggies and can eat almost all of it in 10-15 minutes on an empty stomach but if i had something to eat an hour before that then I can only eat half of the dinner and I go back in 20-30 minutes and finish it.
  17. My BMI is just barely 40. It's like 40.3 or something like that. However, my BMI has been between 35 and 40 for at least 10 years, regardless of what I have tried and I've tried just about everything that seemed reasonable. I weighed at my PCP 2 weeks ago at 40.3. She referred me to bariatric surgeon and also gave me phentermine. I met with him by video conference today. I called my insurance today. They said BMI of 40 qualifies even with no comorbidities. I don't have any comorbidities. The phentermine works - I have a greatly reduced appetite. I've used it before and it works until I stop taking it. I know I have been eating less, so I'm worried my weight will drop and my BMI will be below 40 before the surgeon weighs me, but certainly it will be below 40 if I really diet for 6 months. I just know it will all come back unless I do something different. At what point does my BMI "count" for insurance?
  18. Hello my fellow bypassers! I hope everyone is doing well. I'm doing great in general, although I've been doing a lot of thinking and confronting some hard truths about myself, my relationship to food, my exercise habits (or maybe I should say LACK of exercise habits), etc. Firstly, my progress is GREAT. Almost two months and I've lost almost 40 pounds. All my clothes are now 1-2 sizes too big, which is pretty exciting. My weight hasn't been this low in YEARS, like maybe since before I had my daughter in 2006! I'm still obese of course, but damn! I feel so much better and I'm so excited about my progress. It's starting to feel REAL in a way it never has before. Very rewarding. I have not thrown up at all (knock on wood, etc.) but I have had a few episodes where I was close. This is usually a result of me being stupid and not chewing something well enough. I get a feeling like a rock in my chest, I feel nauseated, and then my mouth starts watering overtime? Ugh, it's triggering to even write about it. Sorry. On a related note, I find that I don't really enjoy food very much anymore. Even things that I do like, I can only eat a teeny-weeny amount. And my body's way of telling me I'm full is that "rock in the chest" feeling, which kind of sucks. So it's hard to enjoy something I'm eating knowing that as soon as I'm full I'm going to get that unpleasant feeling. Realizing this has me thinking a lot about my relationship to food, and how obsessed with it I used to be. I guess at this point I should be talking to a therapist or going to group therapy or something, but you know - Covid-19 has screwed up everything! So instead I journal and rant here. 😆 And exercise, ugh. I still don't like it, but I'm trying. My energy level is not terrible, but not great either. I get tired really quickly. I'm certainly not getting enough protein (I am TRYING, but damn). Also my left shoulder is frozen and it hurts like an SOB but as far as I know I'm still not allowed to take the only thing that helps with that, which is ibuprofen. So yeah, poor me, huh? Haha j/k. Taking my vitamins? Yes. Taking my calcium? Um...yes, but most days only 2/3. Getting enough water/liquids? I'm probably getting about 70% of what I should. Getting enough protein? See above, again, about 70%. Exercising? Hahahahahahahah....does walking the dog count? How about the rest of you?

    GERD before surgery advice

In my experience, worsening GERD with VSG is a bit of a hit or miss. A friend of mine who encouraged me to have the sleeve had silent reflux with the lap band that turned into early-stage Barrett's esophagus. Her surgeon actually recommended the sleeve for her and she hasn't had issues since. Her Barrett's resolved and she's very happy. I also had reflux with the lap band. Not so bad as to develop Barrett's, but annoying just the same. My lap band surgeon recommended conversion to the sleeve. I didn't do it when I had my lap band out, mostly because I was afraid. Fast forward about 6 years and I had gained most of my lap band weight. I suffered from occasional nighttime indigestion, but otherwise had little signs of reflux. My doctor and I decided that the sleeve was the best option for me. About a month after the sleeve I started getting heartburn. This was easily remedied with a PPI (Nexium). It was pretty bad in the 1st year and I had some issues with esophagitis. So, I saw a GI doc. Today I will still have occasional nighttime reflux, but I practice a lot of habits to reduce my risk of nighttime reflux. For the most part, my reflux is well-controlled. I have it, but it's not unmanageable. My GI doc and I are considering Stretta in the future, but it's been pushed asked until the COVID-19 risk is gone because it's not urgent or anything.

    February 2020 Post-Op Thread

I had my 6 month surgery mark on Sunday, and my tele-doc visit with the PA and the Nutritionist yesterday. Everything is on track, which is good to hear; my blood work is all good as far as vitamins, macronutrients, protein, etc. Because I use Myfitnesspal to track food, the nutritionist was able to review my diet with quite a bit of detail, and thinks my carbs are a bit low; sometimes my carbs are as low as 20-25 (but sometimes they are 85!); she suggested I monitor to see if I am tired on the days my carbs are below 40, and adjust. I can't believe it has only been 6 months...February seems a lifetime ago, given all the ways our world has changed since then. Thought I'd share a before and after (during? Because I hope I'm not "done"): Before is from a wedding in 2019; After is from a hike/walk on Sunday.
  21. Hey y'all! Well its been past my 1 year surgiversary 07/24. I thought I'd come and check in even though I'm late lol. I'm officially down -81lbs in a year. Started at 261lbs and now 180lbs. Starting BMI 41, current BMI 28... so now I'm only overweight lol and not morbidly obese. But the BMI scale that goes by height and waist size says I am normal BMI range lol. I got to my goal of size 10 Levi's pants!! waist size 30 (last picture) Yay!!! Of course I wanted to get to 100lbs down, but I did not reach it. Regardless I am truly happy where I am now so not losing the other 19lbs isn't a huge deal for me. I am finally comfortable in a bikini again (middle picture) which feels awesome (even though I have cottage cheese legs lol IDC). I am just so glad I had the surgery. I remember I was so scared to get the surgery and thinking what my life would be like and almost backing out of the surgery thinking I would miss out on all my favorite foods post op, but I was wrong. I'm glad I didn't chicken out. I'm finally happy again to be in the skin I'm in... even though its not perfect its good enough for me. [emoji4] Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stomach pain

Im only day 5 post op from DS but I hate not knowing if what I'm feeling is normal or not. I get intense, often loud, rumbling of my stomach. Could this be gas still? Last night it was all night long, ever 10 minutes. I thought maybe it was hunger but so many people said they don't even feel hunger anymore. Should I just relax? Did others feel this? Thanks Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Reset

Trying a reset this week. Today is my second day, and I know that I have gone to the restroom at least 10 times since I started. Breakfast: Premier Cafe Latte Lunch: Premier high protein chocolate shake Dinner: protein and 4 oz non starchy veggies Snacks: sugar free jello and sugar free Popsicles Which one of these is the culprit? 🙄
  25. I had a sleeve done in July 2019 couldn’t keep anything down due to newly developed gerd (never had an issue prior). Lost so much weight in the first 3 months (100+ lbs). Had to have a pic line put in to get my nutrition levels up to where it was safe to operate on me again). Had a revision to gastric bypass in February 2020. Since then I’ve had 3 instances of vomiting but the first was what I assume was leftover acid because that happened still in hospital after revision. The second and 3rd times were my own fault drinking to quickly after eating. I also had a hernia repair at the time of my revision. I originally wanted the bypass but my team talked me into doing the sleeve as my insurance requirements were easier to get approved with the sleeve. I will say I am very thankful I had the revision done and am feeling much happier and healthier now in the 13 months since my original surgery I’ve gone from 350+ to 175 and from 4x pants to a pair of large today. I worried after the horrible outcome from the original surgery that I might be making a mistake having the revision but today am very happy I did.
