I went to Cleveland Clinic and spent a couple of days going through tests. The dr ( saw so many I don't remember which one ) told me the stomach is an organ. Organs malfunction or develop problems. He also said it wouldn't cure the problem but help with the side effects. ( weight gain) I can't help but believe the weight gain is the side affect to the problem, correct the problem and the weight gain might disappear. I do believe science will get there but the sleeve will do the trick until then.

Okay, THIS is interesting...!
feedyoureye replied to swizzly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Some of the most forward and promising research on weight gain/loss has to do with the gut biome/microbial system. This is just one more bit of research. I am going to move this to the research forums here. Other bits of this kind of research is posted there and I think I put some in the 5:2 info links in the Vets forum if you are interested. -

Hi, My surgery date was 3.16.16. Pretty quickly I began losing weight and achieved my weight goal in November 2016. My weight has stayed pretty close to 166-172 lbs since then but in the late 2 months my weight has jumped to 181 lbs. I am very concerned and afraid of this. Last month I weighed myself and was 181 lbs and Tuesday it was the same. I have ramped my excercise back up and clamped back down on the foods I am eating again. Has anyone had anything like this happen? Were you just as terrified? What reasons were you given as to what is a factor of the weight gain. Any tips anyone can give me to get rid of those 10 lbs? Thanks a Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

Like I said above: Weight gain, yea, it's real! I'm 3 yrs out (next week) - band to sleeve revision. I had done a pretty good job staying focused & losing weight. My start weight was around 245 pounds & my average weight was around 138 to 140 pds. My lowest was 135, but that didn't last long. I'm about 5'2. I know, a giant. So, my struggle started slowly but surely, a few months ago. So, most sleevers can't really eat a lot, which is good, because our tool is working. HOWEVER, it's up to you to eat the right foods. Well, I'm married to a BIG snacker! Hubby eat crap all the time. We're talking things like chips, crackers, chocolate, etc... I used to be able to ignore his snacking, but due to work related stress (hey, that's my excuse), I started to munch. Then, it happened. I was laid-off mid November. Yup, right before the holidays. Guess what happens when you're searching for a job, while sitting on your butt, day in / day out, for hours & hours..... You eat anything because you're frustrated / stressed / bored.... you name it. I know these are only "excuses" but I genuinely feel over-whelmed. We've been able to sustain ourselves, and should be able to hold on for another month or so, but after that.... shits going down. I only got 5 weeks severance as I was only there for 1 1/2 yrs. Thankfully, I had around 150 hours PTO that I never used. But, I did have to cash out some 401K funds to sustain us a little longer. The stress, yea, it's real!!! OK, what's the point of my post? IDK, I guess I'm looking for support. For anyone that's several years out, how do you keep your focus going, and avoid the stress eating? Yea, I know, being fat is NOT an option... but I am. I feel it. I'm almost 150 pounds. How did I let this happen? How on Earth do I get my mojo back? I was doing so well... Now what?

Need Help To Get Focused Again...
Oregondaisy replied to UTGal99's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
In the search bar, look for the boot camp diet. It is really hard and you have to set your mind to not putting anything in your mouth in between meals, and not to snack during the evening. It's fine to have one evening snack of something, but getting up all evening long and getting something was exactly what led to my weight gain. You can also google intermitant fasting and that works really well. That's how a bunch of us here took off our regain. The links are in the veterans forum. -
Waiting from approval from ins(aetna)
Mike4132 replied to dagrlnxtdoor's topic in Insurance & Financing
Uh oh.....I just had paperwork submitted to aetna and gained 4lbs during the 6 month trial. Do they automatically deny for weight gain? I thought I saw other posts indicating people were still approved with Aetna even with gain but now I can't find them.... If denied, what options are there? -
Stomach Stretched?
Bringing-sexy-back replied to Padraigm613's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's my biggest fear! I'm one week postop and I discussed this with my surgeon after surgery. He stated that after a year or two it's common and normal to see weight gain. Some of the reasons are: relaxed exercise regimen after losing the weight and stretching of the pouch by overeating. His advice was if weight gain occurs, pump up your exercise regimen, make sure your getting enough protein, vitamins and sleep and lastly, as already suggested go back to the post op diet for a week. Good luck! -
band doc an integral part of pregnancy?
hope2bhealthy posted a topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Was your band doc an integral part of your pregnancy? I am just wondering because I found out last week that I am pregnant. I am hoping that I won't have to get an unfill during pregnancy, and that I won't need to consult my surgeon for anything. Not because I don't want to gain weight, but because my surgeon is not covered by my insurance. Long story short, I have a different insurance now than I had for surgery, and my surgeon and the hospital he works at is not covered. And because I have a realize band, none of the surgeons for my new insurance will touch me. So I am just curious if any of you had complications from the band with your pregnancies, and/or if you had to consult your surgeon often? I am not really worried about needing an unfill because I am not very tight and I am able to eat around the band to get all the food I need. Luckily I AM tight enough that I should be able to manage to stay under the recommended 15 pound weight gain, which is good. -

This just cannot be happening! So upset !
doreen70 replied to ploveda1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have hypothyroidism. Was discovered in my last pregnancy nearly 12 years ago. Your thyroid function is essential for metabolism. The medication does not cause weight gain. In fact, around my 3 month mark my weight loss seemed stalled for a few weeks. My TSH was very elevated and my medication was increased. My weight started coming off. -
Last week on Friday I moved to "soft foods", since then I feel like I'm gaining weight. Is this the normal feeling? I'm still eating way way less than before, any advice wld be great, thx

For me, this is not a decision about staying obese v. not. It's a decision about the best way to deal with it. The fact is many people have many complications, from moderate to severe, short-term and long-term, with Lapband surgery. And many, many people who have bariatric surgery regain the weight because they did not deal with the underlying issues of why they gain weight. In all of my pre-op classes, the surgery team talked about "doing the work." Well, you have to "do the work" whether you you have surgery or not. Part of "doing the work" means understanding what your triggers are and what foods contribute to weight gain. Through my classes, I have finally figured this out, and I am confident that I can address weight loss without needing surgery. For me, the risk of experiencing the plethora of short and long-term complications of having the Lapband is simply not worth it. I'd rather lose my weight in a less invasive way.

To much freak out on Weight Gain
princessaktmc replied to Doc'sWife's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I understand what you are saying and for me the issue with weight gain ,which i am NOT in any way obsessing over, is more of a mental factor i guess. When i started my lap band journey i was 320lbs and heavy like this my whole life and in less than a year i have dropped 140lbs!!! That's a huge accomplishment to me!! So the thought of putting on 15+lbs, even though its a Excellent reason, is really scary especially after my whole life of trying I'm down to a small and healthy size. Think about it: if you had just worked your butt off losing 140lbs and you are feeling AWESOME how would you feel if your doctor said ok now i want a 20lbs weight GAIN...It would be a little frustrating mentally wouldn't it?... Not sure if you understand what i mean but mentally its scary....I know its for a good reason and i want the baby and myself to be healthy more than anything!! This reason being said I'm not obsessing over the weight gain and i cant lie i had my frustrations at first but after letting it all sink in I'm ok with it all now... -
Pregnancy and diarrhea
beautifulnewme2012 replied to kmbrlycool's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I am 3 months pregnant. Having the same thing going on. I have gained about 4 lbs. I gain and lose the same few lbs. Doc told me not to worry so much about weight gain till the end of the 2nd trimester. So for now I am not going to stress. I do feel restriction similar to what it was when I was just out of surgery some days. It's a chore to eat anything. Still battling morning sickness most days... Hoping to feel better soon. -
Trying To Decide Btwn Rny And Vgs
Vicki Loichinger replied to DebsH's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Deb I have had the lap band for seven years it has never helped my diabetes, I would just lose gain lose gain the same 30 pounds I am having a revision on Nov 7 to RNY, my decision is based on the diabetic factor. I am very insulin resistant I have to take massive doses of insulin which in turns causes weight gain and inflammation through out my body. I am putting all my eggs in the RNY basket. You will find a lot of info on here, just type some search words in and you will find so much info, And everyone here is so supportive, Welcome -
Update time, Hello to anyone out there. Just passed the 5 year mark. Have been happy with weight, not skinny but not getting any bigger. Complications a few months ago. Had a bout with vertigo and ended throwing up a few times. It was the first time for me to actually throw up from my stomach and not from eating too fast. From that point on I started to feel funny, I was able to "feel" my band and port more prominent. Was uncomfortable as soon as i started eating was always felt odd. I let it go on for a few months before going back to my Bariatric dr for a check up. Turns out it may have slipped. My dr immediately unfilled by band (weight gain started right away!!) and now I have to wait till August to get an X-ray to see if it moved back. If it doesn't correct itself I will get the option to have it removed and replaced with ru en y. Any thoughts from anyone out there???

Low carb diet: woozy when I stand up
educationrulz replied to ouroborous's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tend to agree with Anna about the diet soda contributing to dehydration. I've noticed that since I switched from regular to diet soda to transition to my pre-op low carb diet, I've been going to the bathroom constantly. It's like all the fluid runs straight through me. Luckily, my body has responded by craving more water, so I've noticed that I'm drinking more of that along with the soda without having to force myself. But, I'm also a little headachey, so I'm going to try to add even more water and phase out the diet sodas. I've never been a diet soda drinker so the artificial sweetner is probably messing with me. But, hopefully I'll lose a few pounds and won't have to worry about my surgery being cancelled due to my eating fest and weight gain a few weeks ago. -
What Method Of Birth Control Did You Use?
mesaucedo replied to justmeandmysleeve's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
You should realllllllly consider BC. After the sleeve so many hormones are being released that you become extremely fertile. I have heard of women who were "sterile" for 15 years getting pregnant months after surgery. If you do get pregnant it is very dangerous for you and the baby to continue on, some women have done it with no problems, but the likelihood of having problems is huge. I am one of the few who is on depo and loves it, every 3 months I get one shot, no weight gain, no headaches or nausea. I guess I lucked out. -
Hi all, I’m having a revision surgery done at the end of this month. I had the sleeve back in May 2016 and from that I have severe GERD/acid reflux as well as weight gain. Has anyone else had this revision done? Any thoughts...?

ok ... i still had a minimum of 50 pounds to lose to even be at a weight i can live with... my first appointment, my OB suggested i maintain while pregnant... at first i seriously thought no problem!! but now that the morning/all day sickness has pretty much subsided, i'm famished all.the.time.... and i've gained about 3-4 pounds... i can just imagine her freaking out on me my next appointment (next Monday) cause i gained... i know i'm not supposed to 'diet' while PG, but there's the mentality there that almost makes me want to...

I agree on changing things up. I was hardcore low-carb but found when I increased carbs, weight starting coming off. I'm not saying that's what you should do. Just saying trying something new might be worth a shot. You mention grazing. That's also where I got in trouble. The more I stick to regular meals, the better for me. My worst weight loss weeks correlated with lots of grazing. Hang in there. You will figure it out. It just takes time to understand your body. You might also discuss Wellbutrin with your doc. It's in a different class from Prozac, but generally has less weight gain (and for some actually has weight loss) compared to SSRIs like Prozac. If you're open to it, you might also consider talk therapy. You're going through major changes, and trying every tool available is not a bad idea. You're not alone. Many of us have been where you are.

I think all bandsters go through a period of regret, thinking "Oh my god, I'm starving. I'll never be able to enjoy food again. What have I done to myself?" I know I did. It passes, I promise you. As for the weight gain, it's probably some fluid retention from the IV. My fiance told me I had "pudgy fingers" when I came home from the hospital and I couldn't get my engagement ring on. That went away after a couple days. Don't focus so much on weight loss right now, worry more about healing from the surgery. I was in pain from the gas and had a gigantic bruise from the blood thinners that reduced my mobility for almost a week. Everyone recovers differently, so don't sweat it if you're not up and doing yardwork 4 days post op. You'll feel better in time. Good luck!
