    weight gain

Don't worry, I have been on many weight loss forums and it its VERY common for weight gain or stalls in the 3rd or 4th week of any diet/lifestyle change for some reason. Carry on and you will see results.
  2. I am 3 weeks post op and was doing pretty good. In the past week, however, I have gained 4 pounds. I go next Friday to get my first fill. I am rather confused and frustrated. Not sure what I am doing wrong. thoughts??

    FUSTERATED..........(:

I read from others on these forums that granola was a major culprit in sabotaging their weight loss and causing weight gain. I think we are led to believe it's a healthy food but a 1/4 cup has something like 250 calories and tons of carbs.

    Gaining too much

My dr told me at first appt I was allowed a 25lb gain for entire pregnancy. I have lost 27lbs and am almost 34 wks. He is experienced with weight loss surgery patients and diabetic patients. Idk why she would say no weight gain at all. Even my ob dr from my son 11yrs ago told me 20-30lbs was normal. With him I gained 57lbs and he never got mad about it even when I asked what to do to lose some he said worry about it after the baby is born. Idk every dr is different but I don't agree with no weight gain.
  5. If you are having trouble pooping, that could easily account for your "weight gain." Poop weighs more than you might think. Or it could be water weight or some weird bodily fluctuation or your scale malfunctioning. If you are following your surgeon's plan, consider it just a meaningless fluctuation unless it keeps going on this trajectory for three weeks or so.
  6. Hello All, My name is Asmaa, I am 40 years old, married, mother of 3 daughters, age 19, 12, and 10. I currently live in Philadelphia but am originally from DC/NoVA. I have been on my weight loss journey for 19 years, right after I had my first child. I was always pretty slim growing up and only picked up weight after having kids. Over the last 10 years my weight has skyrocketed and before I knew it I was 328 pounds. It wasn't until I saw myself in a family picture that I realized how big I had gotten. Along with they weight gain I suffer from high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I am being treated medically for the HBP and have to sleep with a C-PAP mask for the apnea I have lower back problems and I plantar fasciitis. I have been on every fad diet that anyone could mention, the weight drops but then it comes right back. I had considered weight loss surgery years ago but I felt that I was cheating and taking the easy way out. I felt that I could do i t on my own, and I did. I lost 80lbs by changing my eating habits and exercising. Then I injured my knee and had to have surgery. This slowed down my exercise routine and I returned to disordered eating and the weight came back. I exercise 3-5 times a week but it hasn't been enough. I needed a change and so I decided to look into weight loss surgery. After attending the information session, I felt confident that this option was right for me at this time in my life. The surgeons and staff are terrific. They are very kind and compassionate and care about each and every patient that they treat. And as the months have gone by in preparation for the surgery, I grow even more confident that this is the best choice in my journey. So with that being said...... My vertical sleeve surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday, October 14. I am so happy to be beginning my journey to weight loss and a more permanent healthy state. Well that's my intro, I look forward to getting to know everyone!

    5 day pouch test

Lol I LOVE baking to! its something I picked up after surgery... go figure! But I am not a sweets type of gal.. so I never have the temptation to chow down on them lol.. well unless its that time of the month.. then I just stay away from the oven so I wont eat them! lol But Terry that is such a good idea!! I never even thought about that!! I have my kiddos and the hubster.. so they usually take care of the eating for me.. but now the hubster is on a strict diet. Hes trying to do my puch test diet with me, even though he didn't have surgery! I try to tell him its a bad idea for him.. but he wont listen. So I havnt baked in awhile as he has asked me not to lol. But as for me I have been doing pretty good with it! I am down 4 lbs so far!! So I can tell its working. I think not drinking my protein all the time and drinking a full pot of coffee have been the cause of my weight gain! Well that and not being able to exercise! So maybe my 4 lb weight loss will be someone elses inspiration also! It has inspired me to stick to it that's for sure!
  8. HI Your intentions are wonderful, but weight, weight loss, and weight gain are very personal and intimate subjects. You can never know how someone else will interpret what you say, good intentions or not. Telling someone how they can lose weight is also telling them they are not "ok" as is, unless they have asked for your advice. You have a good heart; just pay attention to being sensitive from the other side ~hiddn

    discouraged

You are new to the process, just remember the scale is not your friend, the measuring tape is lol. I gain weight periodically throughout the month for instance is it close to your "TOM" if so the weight gain could be water retention. Don't panic if you are eating right and exercising the weight will come off.... the key is to stop watching the numbers Follow me on Twittwer @myworldalc
  10. Back in 2008 I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. I had to have my thyroid ablated (RAI) radiation and had it killed off. So now I have a dead gland in my neck. I was 245 pounds then. After the radiation, I gained another 50 pounds which put me at my higest weight of 295 -299. I started on meds and my weight gain leveled off but I couldn't lose. So that is when I decided to have surgery. Anyway, my meds have been adjusted down 3 times since being sleeved and as I've lost weight. Just got my labs back and I'm hypothyroid again so I need to go back up on my meds a bit. I haven't lost any weight in 6 months really.Nothing has worked. My hair is still falling out and I've been an emotional wreck! I sure hope this helps me. I'm praying this adjustment on my medication will get my weight loss started again! Very hopeful! I want to be at 150! I decided to take some pics yesterday just to remind myself of where I've come from. At least, I haven't been gaining to much. Well, I did gain 7 pounds and lose two. I really think this is the reason. I pray that it is! Starting on new meds tomorrow.

    Frustrated

My personal advice is for you to weigh yourself morning and night. See what foods cause you to gain weight. Weight gain or stagnation isn't always caused by increasing body fat. Some foods heavy in sodium or carbs can cause you to retain fluids but your scale can't tell the diff between Fluid gains and body fat increases. For me, knowing what affects my body is important, so tracking daily is important. For others, it's too complicated or too emotional to track.
  12. Yes, hopefully the ER you go to will have a bariatric surgeon on call. It sounds like a slip. I have had one, I keep a lose band now. Better a slight weight gain than permanent damage to your body! Best wishes.

    Screwed by my own impatience...

AH Madigan Army Medical what a wonderful place to get lost in bureaucracy lol. We were stationed at Ft. Lewis when all this started. They were the ones that denied my cervical cancer, after one of their doctors had performed a full radical hysterectomy . I’m glad you are feeling better about your situation. I know it’s an inconvenience, but I still feel you made the right move to get the ball rolling. My conditions stem from digestive troubles which ultimately led to weight gain that led to other disorders. And the rest is history. I personally feel like military doctors are programmed to discourage what they consider elective surgery. I got the same response for most of the doctors at Lewis that I just needed to exercise. They lacked to realize I was quickly declining in the ability to do so even though I struggled through and dieted and exercised as hard as I could and still do. I have actually had a physician from a military installation tell me he feels that spouse’s use the services of the Army medical to get surgeries they don’t need. And it is this mindset that has most likely discouraged many people who need specific treatments in order to obtain better health. My disease came with no warning signs or symptoms and it was by chance they discovered the fibrosis of my liver while I was having my gallbladder removed. With every part of my being I implore everyone to ask questions about your liver before or after surgery for your own sake. I wish you the best of luck and keep in touch on your progress J P.S. No charge on the Therapy session, it’s my job jkjkjkjk ( I’m a psychology student..lol)
  14. Hello I am 31 weeks and have gained about 22 pounds. Today at the doctors, I asked how I am doing with my weight gain. The doctor (first time I am seeing this one from the medical group) said that she would tell someone with my starting weight of 240 to have gained 0 pounds throughout the entire pregnancy. I was shocked. All of the other doctors that I have seen so far, including one who has the verticals sleeve gastrecromy herself, never said that. The doctor then proceeded to give me advice on what to eat. Stay away from all dairy- milk, cheese. Stay away from all oil. Only get Protein through fish. I said I don't eat fish. Then she said I don't need to eat meat to get protein, and to stick to Beans and tofu. I get maybe I've gained more than I should, and I atill have 9 weeks to go, but is she accurate? Should I have gained nothing? Why would this doctor tell me something completely different? I have gotten very relaxed with what I've been eating... Falling back into my old patterns pre surgery so I have to fix that, but I still don't eat huge amounts... Although with my pregnancy my appetite has increased Suggestions?

    I gained weight after surgery?

They typically start an IV of fluids before surgery, and they don't unhook you from it until right before you go home. All those fluids can make you gain weight! But it's just fluids, not really weight gain. I recommend that for now, you concentrate on healing from surgery and staying hydrated. Don't start worrying about weight loss for a week or two. I promise, it will happen!
  16. I understand how you feel MissyT. I also had to have a hysto at an early age. For us that can cause it's own issues with weight loss and weight gain. If you are in a good place about it, you can do it. It's not a miracle surgery. Your not going to wake up at goal weight. It may take a year or two..if your anything like me your going to lose a bit slower. Hormonal issues can be a huge mountain to climb when it comes to weight loss, but it is possible! Best of luck on your journey, we'll be looking for you on the banded side.
  17. Weight gain is caused by high protein food and lack or exercise. Exercise and proper diet are very important to lose weight and improve fitness. Avoid all high protein food like meats, nuts, grains, cheese, fast foods, fried and dairy products. Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, yogurt, drink green tea, fruit juices and plenty of water. Go for walking, running, cycling, practice push ups, bench press and chair squat. It improve mood, burns fat, make strong bones and muscles, boost energy, improve heart functions and improve fitness. 18. Just got back from my pre-op appnt and i'm so annoyed with myself. I knew the liquid diet was going to take care of the 10-15 pound required weight loss so just ate whatever for the past months. Now ive gained 10 pounds. Doc wasn't happy with the weight gain and wanted me to lose that in addition to the original 10 pounds. Thankfully its just made me more resolved to stick to the liquid diet. No more fooling around. I guess its just Optifast shakes, soups and Healthwise drinks for the next 2 weeks. I can and will do it!
  19. It's been just over 6 months since my surgery, and I've gotten to the point where I don't think much about eating in between meals. I do have a snack in the evening, but during the day......rarely. I can also say that I'm not cured of the obsession to eat. But what I've learned from trial & error since being banded, is that if I push it, I'll be uncomfortable. I had plication done with the band, and I really think that acts as a secondary stop mechanism. There have been times when I've certainly put it to the test, but there is no way on earth I could ever eat the way I did before. And putting it to the test isn't a binge; more like a few extra bites, or an extra snack at night. Weekends are the time I usually have a few extra calories. We go out to eat for almost every meal, and though I follow the eating rules, I may allow myself some popcorn at the movies, or a few bites of a dessert my husband might order in a restaurant. My actual meals are so small, that I haven't experienced any weight gain since surgery. There are days when I feel like it was a "bad day", but when I calculate it, I've had only 1400 calories. Maybe not good for loss, but certainly, not enough to gain. So now, "bad" has a whole new meaning. Mis is so right on about working on the psychological issues surrounding compulsive overeating. I've dealt with this affliction since the age of 6 (52 years!!), and I can honestly say, though we can choose differently in any given moment, and the addiction may feel dormant, it never really leaves. That is why we need to be diligent to our program on a daily basis. Doesn't mean we'll always be perfect, but if we're good 85% of the time, we will have life long success.

    Sleeve Myths or Reality?

The other rule is no drinking with meals. There are lots of post on that topic. Drinking at least 10 minutes before meals and you'll feel full faster. If you eat with your meal., you will wash your food out of your stomach and experience hunger shortly thereafter.. then you'll eat more, there by adding calories and eventually stop your weight loss and even go to weight gain. Many surgeons and NUTS give varying advice bot most are consistent with following a high protein and low carb way of eating for life. Low sugar often relates to low junk food, sweets, desserts which of course will add to weight gain. Protein helps weight loss ( I forget why but I'm pretty sure it helps ). There are usually reasons for the guidelines. ONce you reach your goal weight you eating lifestyle will be what works for you. Be sure its still a healthy way of eating or you will gain weight and that is not a sleeve myth.. that is a sleeve fact. Good Luck with your journey.

    Denied because of 1.8lbs!

I got my Aetna approval on Friday and it was pretty easy. 4 months of supervised nutrition visits, meet their minimum BMI (or BMI and comorbidity) requirement, and don't gain any weight from your first visit to your last. Easy peasy!! I asked Aetna why on the no weight gain rule and apparently there are studies showing a much lower success rate for people who gain pre-op weight. It can cause more surgical complications and shows a lack of dedication and knowledge about what is required for a banded lifestyle. Makes sense to me, it just sucks people weren't grandfathered in if they started the 4 months prior to the rule change.

just a general question about habits

That's a good but difficult question. The simplest way to put it- the band doesn't change your behavior at all, it's your job to change your behavior. Very often, band patients do revert back to old behaviors if they haven't deal with the psychological aspects that lead them to obesity to begin with. There is a saying around here "the band goes around our stomachs, not our brains". If someone is eating for a reason other than physical hunger then they need to deal with that issue because the band can't change that. Another reason it's imperative to deal with the psychological issues of obesity is because the biggest weight gain "comfort foods" are also slider foods. Slider foods are foods that you can eat a ton of because they essentially liquefy when you eat them so they slide right through like the band isn't even there. For most of us (including me), chips are a slider. So is chocolate and ice cream. Some baked good are too- I found this out when I made homemade sugar Cookies last Christmas. When it comes to slider foods, you can easily binge and really sabotage your weight loss efforts. It's a slippery slope and one that really needs to be dealt with. What the band does do is allow you to be satisfied on much less food for much longer periods of time. Essentially, it controls hunger. This helps significantly for two reasons- it's a lot easier to eat less food and you're not so pre-occupied with food when you're not constantly hungry. If the band is removed, or Fluid removed, it is common for weight gain because all the sudden your appetite comes back with a vengeance. Last summer I had to have a total unfill for surgery (not band related). I got out of the hospital and I swear I was starving. I mean... my stomach was growling hungry all the time. I didn't gain weight during that time but boy it wasn't easy. Getting my band refilled couldn't come quick enough. If I'd had to stay like that long term, or worse lost my band forever, I have no doubt I'd gain weight. My personal feeling is, the better mentally prepared you are for the necessary changes with the band the better off (and more successful) you'll be. Best wishes.
  23. hi, this isnt brought up as a criticism of anyone. it happens to unbanded people in fact it is why i want one in part, regaining weight. hitting your goal, something in your life changes and we start gaining again. what surprises me is reading about people who are banded that get an unfill and report gaining quickly 20-30 lbs or more. the apprehension i have a week or so out from getting my band is ridiculous, i'm not only afraid i'll overeat and damage the band but the really disturbing thought is i'll miss being able to over eat. i should mention the flip side of that thought is liberating, being free of that sick feeling and life revolving around food. so, with the band do habits really change, do some of us too easily revert to overeating when restriction is removed or is there a long term change to metabolism that results in weight gain if we return to eating normal amount of calories?

  25. Has anyone ever gained weight during your pre-op liquid diet? I'm on day 7 and every day the scale was lower and lower, but today I'm 2 lbs heavier. :/ I'm wondering if my metabolism is slowing down and storing fat. Can that be a possibility?
