    knee surgery before sleeve?

I'm planning on having knee surgery AFTER my sleeve. Hoping to get another year or two out of this bone on bone knee...maybe I will after I'm not dragging so much weight around!

    knee surgery before sleeve?

I needed 2 knees and 2 hips my ortho and md suggested losing weight for obvious reasons , healthy people recover with less complications and anesthesia risks are greatly reduced. Got my first hip replaced in jan. 13 months out from my sleeve I honestly can't imagine rehabbing +150 lbs. next hip is in sept. and after 2 series of hylagan injections my knees feel much better but still need replacing.

ABsolutely NO! I have never been this successful with any weight loss plan. Best thing I ever did for myself, even with the side effects!

    Sleeve

Does anyone follow weight watchers on sleeve.
  7. I am fairly new to this process. This week I have been doing all of my first appointments. I met with the Nutritionist yesterday and they are not who I will be seeing for the 6 month diet that CIGNA requires it was just an appointment to let me know what to expect after surgery. I got the feeling the entire time that the nutritionist was trying to talk me out of having the surgery. She made everything that I had to eat after surgery sound so terrible. I guess they may try to weed out some people who aren't really serious about this ? I kept countering her with positives explaining that anything I give up is well worth it compared to everything I have gone through and do go through with my weight. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

    Home Equipment?

I have a treadmill and elliptical from sears. Love both of them. I need diversity and this way I can change it up. I too have bad knees. My treadmill has a flexible walking surface so can adjust the firmness. I also use a exercise ball and free weights.
  9. I stalled at three weeks too! I was super bummed!! I still am lol. Today is the first day of my fourth week and I I havent lost anything in 7 days. I just had my post op today and DR said my weight loss is good ( 18 pounds since August 16) I'm hungry about every three hours but she said that was ok - as long as I stay within 600-800 calories. I was just expecting to lose steadily for the first few months. Ugh!! I guess all we can do is hang in there

    First Bump in the Road

although insurance didn't cover mine, I am preparing my physician's letter for recommending surgery so I can deduct it off taxes. I have included high blood pressure, family history of overweight and diabetes, foot problems, etc. Read the co-morbidities listed on some sights and identify if you have them now or are even at risk because of excess weight, family history, etc.

A few things... 1--you can get insurance for anything...but the more a policy covers, the more it costs. People have BC/BS policies that pay and other people have policies that don't. You need to get a copy of YOUR policy and see what YOUR policy covers. It can be very different from the BC/BS policy the person next door has. And you'll seldom get the same answer twice from the people who work there. (Some just read better than others.) 2--a lot of what gets covered and what doesn't is in how you phrase it. My insurance is NOT in the mood to pay for a breast lift. But if WILL pay for a breast reduction and, if what is left of my breasts turns out to be lifted....well, oh my. If you ask for wls, you probably won't get it. If you ask for weight loss surgery because you're overweight, you probably won't get it. BUT, if you ask for weight loss surgery as treatment for morbid obesity, then you're at least in the ballpark. 3--your BMI is close. Most insurers want a BMI of 40. So if you are 5'9" and 265, your BMI is 39.1 and you are NOT MO. But if you are 5'8" and 265, your BMI is 40.3 and you ARE MO. So wear your heaviest jeans and several layers of clothes and, if they measure your height, have them do it while your shoes are off. Also, some insurers accept a BMI of 35 WITH comorbidities. Do you have any health problems related to your weight. (Do you snore? Have you had a sleep study?) Then, I'm going to kind of give you a hard time here: You need to read more. My answers might be right or they might be way out in left field. When you pop into an internet bulletin board and ask a question, your answers could be coming from two drunks and an inmate with nothing better to do. Get information from several sources, and don't trust any ONE source to be 100% accurate all of the time. Good luck, Sue

    Psych Consultation

KIM, When they asked me why I wanted the surgery I just made sure I said things like.... Want to be healthier, live longer, be around to see my kids grow up etc. I think they just want to make sure your not going it for the wrong reason (to become a runway model, get back at an ex, quick fix etc). One thing they might ask is if you have the support of your family. Oh and anoher thing.. I was leary of telling the physc about being on anti-depression meds thinking he might not give me the "ok", but I came clean and he told me he was glad I let him know. I said I was depressed about being over weight - he said it would help my case. Hope this helps and good luck to you. Michele :girl_hug:

  15. Part of what drove my wife and myself into obesity is the Buffalo Wing. If you want to see part of my obession about wings, go to columbuswings.com. I have been thinking since surgery about my wing website and the great pleasure it was brought us. I am a judge at an annual wing festival and even travel to the national festival, and the Anchor bar every year. This year the judging and the wing event came the same week and my annual golf, hooters, Cininnati Reds game with my friends. Going into this week, I came very close to my goal. Going out of this week I can say I had a wonderul week and enjoyed everything and did not gain weight. Using the things I have learned up to this point has helped me and I can say that I no longer fear going into maintenance mode and gaining it all back. I can work hard, see the rewards and still enjoy life.

My pysch eval was an 800 question quiz to determine if I was "mentally unstable". I was honest with him and told him in an hour long visit (not including the quiz) that I have diabetes in the family and was concerned for my overall health. He asked if I was a binge eater and I said yes. He just asked when my last binge was. Then he had me promise that I would start so kind of exercise 3X a week and to give up my sweet tea. I told him that I would give that up when I get approved for the surgery and he said that was fine. He also asked that I come in at 20-30 lb weight loss and than again at 100 lb weight loss, just to see how I was handling the weight loss mentally. It was very pleasant and I have never seen a pysch before!
  17. Hi Everyone, Not sure if I am just over reacting, but it seems like my weight loss has stalled and tomorrow will be my three weeks post op. I have no idea why. I am getting ready to start my soft foods and I have been doing the puree this last week. I found some recipes and have not gone over or eaten anything that isn't recommended. I am working on my activity and am walking 20 min. a day. I don't know if I am just over reacting or not, but I don't like this stall. I saw my surgeon at 10 days post op, and my weight has not really changed much since then. Any ideas? Thanks!!

    Surgery Date! Yeah

I'm scheduled for April 26th. Only a month away now. But I saw my surgeon and I gained 2.2 lbs since my last visit in January and he is threatening to postpone my surgery. I'm scared that he will make me wait.

    Questions! Advice please :)

Btw, congrats on your weight loss!
  20. Okay so tomorrow I go on puréed foods and my biggest fear is since I will be eating actual food with carbs and calories (not clear liquid) is that I will gain weight. I'm on day 6 and I have lost 18 lbs since I left the hospital! I'm shocked too! Anyone else feels this way or have advice?

    End of the rope

It sounds like this was not the weight loss surgery for you. Have you considered RNY or the sleeve? Something tells me you'd have more success with either of those. That said, it sounds like the band failed you. No one should be so tight that they can't eat in the morning. If that's the only way to lose weight then something is wrong. Would you have gotten the band if they had told you at the seminar that you couldn't eat solid foods until evening? Of course not. The band is promoted as a tool that will create a small pouch. This pouch will create a sense of satiety with small quantities of healthy food. solid food. This will happen when you get to your "sweet spot". But not everyone is able to get to the sweet spot. Some endure daily vomiting, etc..because they are too tight but are losing weight. They do this to their own detriment, in my opinion. I have a 4cc band and have had anywhere from 1cc to 3cc in it. With 3cc I was too tight. I had pain, reflux and heartburn. But I was still hungry. I never felt satiety. I just couldn't physically eat much due to the pain. And I followed all the band rules. I also exercise every day, including weight lifting, treadmill and aerobic dancing. I now have all the fill taken out after a horrible stuck episode landing me in the ER and an overnight stay. The band never worked for me like it was promoted. It did not create a sense of satiety. It never caused me to be less hungry. And that was why I got it. I always had a big appetite and was always hungry. I have lost 75 pounds but only 15 from the band. The rest was all the dieting including the liquid pre and post surgery diets. I am basically doing this with willpower. However, I do not plan on getting any fill. What for? They never worked to get me to my sweet spot and the last stuck episode felt like I was shot in the stomach. No weight loss is worth risking that again. So, you did not fail the band. The band failed you. Consider another type of WLS and good luck.

    Fear of eating

That dessert probably helped you lose some weight. Look it is not the best choice, but you are going to stop losing if you don't up your calories. The body will protect itself and if you can... up those calories to 1000. Your body needs to eat and use calories to lose. I know it sounds strange but it is fact.... Don't be so hard on yourself. So you ate a little dessert. Don't do it a lot. Once in a while if you find you can handle it. If it becomes a problem and you crave it too much. Then you will have to find other complex carbohydrates to eat. I did not eat for almost 6 months. I had to be taught again to eat. It was not fun...I had complications and so was on a drip. Be happy that you are able to eat. But try to keep the choices as healthy as you can...okay

    Newbie

Hi! New to the site! I have been overweight my entire life. I started losing my weight journey in 2001 when my gyn doc put me on Adipex. I took those for about a month or two. Then my primary doc told me to stop taking them because of blood pressure. So I joined this program, LA Weight. Loss about 80lbs. with them spent years spending money with them and said I'll never have WLS! Tried over programs as I moved to and from different states( Quick Weight Loss, WW 3 times, Atkins and South Beach). In 2005, started taking Phentermine again through online Pharmacies along with doing LAWL again. Did that for about a year. Finally stopped and gained all the weight back. So in '06, I decided I need to have GB surgery but how was I going to pay for it. So, in '07 I started going to seminars. Started hearing about LAP BAND and all it's stories and cost. Met people who had it done and heard all there wl stories. So, in '08 had a REALIZE BAND placed at a start weight of 310 lbs. loss only 40lbs. I exercised and did my proteins, everything just couldn't pass 40lbs. Never really controlled hunger. Just made it to where food would get stuck and then I would start having problems. Had several fills and unfills. Over the course of 4 years I started thinking well maybe I could start taking pills again. My doc even put me on a low dose Phentermine for 3 weeks, a tease! I thought we were on to something! His rationale was to jump start my metabolism! Ha! In May of '11 found a job with WLS coverage. I new that my precert would have to start one year from the time of my initial coverage (July) with 6 month (Jan '12-July '12)wl supervision. I had it down to a science. Started seeing my PCP in Jan and joined WW again for the 3rd time. July rolled around I scheduled appt with surgeon. Had a scope done didn't find anything wrong with band, just some gastric irritation below due to H. Pylori bacteria. Put me on a 2 week PrevPac. The bariatric coordinator sent paper work to BCBSof AL. They wanted to see proof of where I paid for band. Took about 2- 3 weeks for approval. Schedule for band removal and RNY on 10/22! Wt now 312lbs!

    Fear of eating

Food was terrifying at first. Now at nine weeks out, things are iffy. Experimenting with what settles well. Most things don't but I know it will get better. Meanwhile, I am losing weight so no complaints!
