    Pouch reset

The pouch reset plan: You start with liquids and progress to solid foods just like you do after bariatric surgery. Only my opinion, The pouch reset will not shrink your stomach. It is a way to get back to healthy habits. Some find liquids, shakes, and soft foods too restrictive. You can get back on track by eating your bariatric real food plan. Log your food, hydrate and exercise.
  2. five years out, My maintenance calorie range is 1200 to 1400 calories. I eat mainly clean/healthy. I indulge within reason. Calories/carbs look different when I’m distance running (1500 to 2000+ depending on the event) I keep my weight in the 130’s - When I have a slight weight gain, I go back to bariatric weight loss calories. (1000 to1100) to work it off.
  3. Anyone had a surgery by Dr. Pasten at SoCal Bariatrics?
  4. I completed my requirements on 11/4 and they didn't start reviewing my chart until 11/22. Two weeks have passed and still nothing. I have contacted them twice and they just tell me there isn't any update. So I asked my patient coordinator how long a review typically takes and she said that there isn't a time limit. Right now, I am dying to get a job. I currently stay home with my 2 year old and I want to get a job, obviously for money but two things are hindering it: 1) I have no set date until my insurance approves (medicaid). 2) I have horrible joint pain and back spasms so I would need an office job of some sort. Part of me wants to just wait it out but I am annoyed because this whole process is making me want to improve every aspect of my life but I can't get a job due to no set surgery date. I don't want to get a job, only to quit in a month or so. Any pointers? I am so aggravated and needed to rant!

This has become too much! PLEASE HELP

I cook same stuff for family that I am able to eat smaller portions of. I also keep things on hand like good quality meatballs in the freezer. So easy to add sauce and mozzarella cheese for myself. Family can eat the same thing over spaghetti. Lots of great recipes at Bariatric Foodie that are also family friendly. I made a taco casserole from that site last night. Grandson and husband both loved it.

Anyone end up with a normal BMI after weightless surgery?

My highest recorded wt (242 lbs) was a BMI Of 48.8. My starting wt with my bariatric surgeon (229 lbs) was a BMI of 46. I just recently reached my "ideal wt" (117 lbs) which means 100% of excess wt lost and I have a BMI of 23.6!
  7. I don’t think it’s that simple, but for me personally I couldn’t take Metformin for PCOS since it made me ill, turned out it makes endometriosis worse. I also have Adult onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia and an inability to exercise. I followed extreme low carb, low calories for years but at some point it stopped working and I couldn’t seem to eat low enough calories to lose. I began my bariatric surgery journey when I found out I needed my gallbladder out.

    8 weeks from VSG surgery

800-1000 is pretty common for bariatric patients who are in the weight loss phase (some people eat even fewer - more like 600-800), but do whatever your bariatric team suggests. Yes it's low for a "normal" person, but you're doing it under medical supervision and are taking supplements. Once you hit goal and go into maintenance mode, your calorie intake will increase. I eat 1500-1700 now that I'm in maintenance (YMMV). But I was probably at 800-1000 when I was where you are....

    December 2019 Sleeves

Dec 18th and starting to getting cold feet already. Forever is forever. This has come on very suddenly for me as I have a hip injury that requires surgery to fix. I saw an orthopedic Dr. who told me insurance companies won't approve elective surgeries on people who are as overweight as I am (5'10 303) because they don't want to be responsible for post-op complications people who are as overweight as I am are prone to have after surgery (infection etc). I have been ridiculously healthy my entire life, but am seriously overweight and started taking high BP medication about a year or two ago. I just turned 49, have arthritis in my right knee and in the past two years have been experiencing pain in my right hip and high thigh area. Walking makes it worse, and so I am limping around doing as little as possible these days. So I went to see a Bariatric specialist who was able to get me approved for surgery in less than a week. Today is day 3 of protein shake diet. It's not bad, I am not hungry, it's just a lot more rich and sweet tasting that I would normally eat. It is really boring and has taken all the fun out of eating. My relationship with food has always involved eating because I like to, it tastes good and eating all the wrong things (bread/pasta carbs fried foods, fast food, junk food, nearly exclusively red meat and some seafood.) I think the scariest thing for me is risking my hair falling out or some kind of internal injury to another organ, leakage/sepsis and my normal fear of needles, doctors sharp object surgery etc. I am now starting to question if I am doing the right thing, or for the right reason but know in the long run I will be much healthier if I lose a lot of weight. Mostly I am tired of being in pain every time a take a step, but I question why an insurance co would not approve me for hip surgery why they would approve me for a bariatric surgery so quickly. I also am concerned as my health insurance is changing companies Jan 1st and wonder if the new company could refuse to cover me if there should be an issue citing a pre-existing condition?

    8 weeks from VSG surgery

Follow your teams advice and call/email them for clarity. Unless your sister works specifically with the bariatric community her advice will not be as accurate. Good Luck 💚

    Contemplating ESG

There is a Bariatric Center of Excellence in Columbia SC. That is what you should be looking for. I had mine done 4 months ago and have had absolutely no problems.
  13. since you're a bypass patient, you're not going to absorb the B12 that's in the multi. I'd probably just cut back on the extra B12 supplement a bit and see if your level comes down. For example, if you're currently taking the extra B12 supplement every day, cut back to every other day. I take a megadose of it. I used to take it once a week - I now take it every other week. My level was also over 2000 but now hovers around 1000-1200-ish. My bariatric clinic was never concerned about the 2000 level, though. They just said my body didn't need as much B12 as I was taking, so it was OK to cut back.
  14. Great idea! I already have B12 in my bariatric multi, so will stop the extra B12 supplement for a month or two and retest! [emoji4] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

  17. when I had that issue (B12 level over 2000), the bariatric clinic told me to cut back on my dosage - they said I was oversupplementing. They see vitamin-related issues a lot - probably a lot more than a GP does - so I'd be inclined to believe them. You could always cut back and they can test your levels again later.
  18. Well, now I'm confused because my GP says it is indicative of a deficiency, yet the bariatric nurse says to cut back on the B12! The Internet is no help either. I don't know who to believe and bariatric nurse said to go to GP for follow up anf management. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No Pre-Op Liquid Diet?

well, I had my surgery at one of the top research & teaching hospitals in the country, with a surgeon who's on the surgery faculty, so I can't say he'd be one to avoid. I still think it's a matter of professional opinion. Some do it - some don't. I see you had John Rabkin - also a top surgeon. I do think it's just a difference of opinion. I would hardly call my surgeon inferior to those who don't require pre-op liquid diets. He trains a lot of other bariatric surgeons...

    Clogged/Plugged ears?

I’ve always related my blocked ears to when my blood pressure would drop. I’ve had instances over years before my surgery but since my surgery in May my BP is low all the time & I have had blocked ears many, many times. I can’t pop them (yawning, drinking, chewing,...don't work). I just have to wait for it to pass. Interested to hear how common this is. My GP got me to have a brain scan to make sure there was nothing sinister this week but all good. Thank gracious. Hair loss is very common. Mine’s been falling out for 4 months now & I’ve lost almost 50%. Very sad. There are lots of posts about this with suggestions on how to lessen the impact but nothing’s slowed mine yet. My surgeon warned me it would happen. In his words: ‘You’re body has better things to do with the reduced nutrients you take in on your new diet than grow hair.’ He wasn’t wrong. My surgeon & dietician told me I’d have to take multi vitamins for the rest of my life. I have blood tests every 3 months for my Bariatric team & my GP has had me get one in between. They’re tracking & monitoring even slight changes. I’m sorry your GP is not being supportive of your journey. They are your primary care giver & someone who you should be able to trust & depend upon for your health & well being.

    Regain

^^^^^This is truly profound. It IS a multi-factoral disease recognized by the AMA and ASMBS (sp? chemo brain catching me) and insurance board. Most bariatricians and bariatric surgeons readily admit (when asked) that this is a disease (obesity) and once MO and some say overweight not even obese, you will battle it for your entire life or suffer regain. So it's a case for us of being in a state of NED (like with my Stage 3C BC). I can never say I was cured. This surgery does not offer a cure. It offers a brief 3-5 year window to reset your body's metabolic thermostat to defend a lower set point. But the body is smart and wants to get back to the state it knows. Some studies show that the microvilli increase post RNY and DS to ease the malabsorption and take in more nutrients. All studies show as we heal, we are able to eat more and more and more volume to the point of 5 years out most of us will be eating at our pre-surgery volumes (or just about). That's why Dr. Weiner says that we should never buy into the myth of restriction and malabsorption. It's why we MUST learn new skills and behaviors with food and use the time to develop new food preferences and new gut biomes that crave more good foods than bad. So at best we are in Remission or NED (no evidence of disease). And the longer we can trick our body into staying in that state, the more chance we have of long term success. It's like pulling weeds. Pulling a couple of weeds each week? Meh. Totes doable. Weeding a 1 acre garden? Total bull crap! LOL. It will take huge effort!
  23. Hi drzrx, I just wanted to let you know that BariatricPal MX has changed its name to Hospital BC. Dr. Illan is still the Medical Director is a Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery by SRC.
  24. Here's my chart of B12 (I cut back on the dosage a bit cuz I forget to take 'em and rolled it into my B-Complex vitamin.) Here's my Folate Chart Here's my B6 Chart Here's my B1 Chart As @catwoman7 mentioned, it is not unusual for bariatric patients to have skewed vitamin levels - especially of the B vitamins. My doc has never mentioned anything to me about my B12 or Folate levels being dangerous. When I was low on B1 and B6 and Potassium, we supplemented until the levels came back to norm. But I did it under doc's care.
