  1. I gained 14 pounds my nut told me what I was doing was completely normal that many do it. I was eating everything that I thought I could never have again. I had no issues as far as my weight gain and the surgery
  2. Hi, I don't know if this is the right thread and this is my first post, but I am so impatient! I went to the info session on Aug 14 and have done the psych exam and visited the dietitian twice. I have been told that I need to lose 5 pounds prior to the surgery but have gained 2 so now I need to lose 7 pounds. I am so ready to get this thing on the road but don't know when my surgery will be scheduled. My next dietitian appt is this Monday and I'm hoping to hear good news, however; I know she's going to talk to me about my weight gain. Here's what I need to know... 1. How long from the info session to surgery does it take? 2. Does the weight loss affect when the doctor schedules the surgery? 3. Am I being unrealistic and need to calm down?

    Thyroid Issues...anyone Else?

I have been hypothyroid since 2009. I take 75 mcg of synthroid. Major weight gain since then after being obese my whole life. Got my first appointment with the bariatric surgery team at the Mayo Clinic in November. Interested in seeing how this all turns out.

How was your 5:2 day today?

Brown, don't lose hope! I know you say you are not THAT woman! As CGJ said, all body types are different. But just know that many, including Feed Your Eye, Coops, M2G, and others have never reached goal. They are close now and WILL but many were in very long term stalls or had gained upwards of 25-30 pounds since their lowest. Yes, I did reach goal very easily the FIRST TIME. Then I relaxed, fell into bad eating habits of junk and I'll be honest, it was not until I was facing a close to 30 pound weight gain that I truly got scared. I tried low carb for several months with no success and if you look back at posts from me around March or so of last year I truly sounded just like you! It was not until I hit on 5:2 that I found an answer for ME. And I kicked it around for about a month or so before really committing. The. I hit it with vengeance. It HAS to be if you really want something I feel really sure you will find what works for you. I would ask that you REALLY commit to 5:2 for another few weeks. And REALLY HIT IT HARD. What I found is that I had to drastically cut my feast day carbs and cals as well to KEEP the weight lost and move further down. Our bodies are metabolically altered and we cannot eat like others. That's what I think anyway All said to say, I believe in you! I know you want to be HEALTHY first and sexy second! . Go after it!!!!!

    December Surgeries!?!?!?

A vit D deficiency can be very serious. There are several negative effects of having low levels (especially over a long period of time) that are irreversible. Definitely look into it and talk to your nut about it. Don't forget that you must take bariatric vitamins for the rest of your life. I have a severe Vit D deficiency that is being treated with high dose supplements for at least 6 months. I stopped taking my vitamins over a year ago and I quickly became deficient. I'm post op 9 years but I'm now having a revision due to weight gain and some other issues.

    Baffled!

I was in the same situation as you. I was banded on Sept 19th. I lost 10 pounds in the the first 2 weeks, but in the last 2 weeks, I have managed to gain 3 pounds. I have followed the diet, and I am eating very healthy. I go for my first fill tomorrow. I was freaking out about the 3 pound weight gain that I actually called the nurse. She did tell me that it was normal at this time frame. In the frist 2 weeks your not hungry due to the trauma to your stomach, but then your hunger starts to kick in. I don't snack between meals, and my calorie intake is low. She reassured me that once I started getting fills, the weight will come off. As for working out, my doctor said I was free to work out. I was told 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength training. I could not lift anything more than 20 pounds, and no abdominal excersizes for the first 4 weeks. The elliptical would have been fine for me to do. Every doctor is different. I'm sure you are doing everything right. The weight will start to come off. Do you use myfitnesspal? Would love to be friends if you do.

    How ofter do you weigh

Losing weight and losing fat are two completely different things. It's nice to see the scale go down of course but usually quick weight gain or loss is simply the body ridding or absorbing fluids. It's nearly impossible to lose more than 1/2 lb of fat in one day unless you're a marathon runner or ride a century bike ride. Some types of food or sodium can cause the body to eliminate fluids or absorb fluids. Carbs and sodium can cause these wild weight fluctuations. If you're hyper-sensitive to seeing the scale jump around on a daily or weekly basis maybe you shouldn't look. But if you understand the reasons for these fluctuations and don't take them personally, weigh yourself daily like many of us do. I weigh morning and night. Just remember that you need to consume 3500 more calories than you burn to gain one lb/fat. Or, you need to burn 3500 calories more than you consume to lose one lb/fat. If you eat 1000 calories a day and burn 2000, you could be losing approximately 1/3 lb/fat a day. But, if it's your TOM or you consume a snickers bar or a bowl of cheerios or 2000mg of sodium, your body could retain 1-3 lbs of extra fluids. It's not fat weight but your scale can't tell the diff. Hope this wasn't too lengthy and helps?
  9. The TMI part of your post made me think about Celiac (gluten intolerance). I was diagnosed 6 yrs. ago, and I NEVER EVER thought I would have it--I am a carb. addict, after all. Maybe the next time you are getting blood work done, you could ask them to check that for you too. It can cause weight gain/retention, for those of us "lucky" enough to have weight issues.

    Thyroid Issues...anyone Else?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few weeks prior to surgery and I am freaking out that the sleeve won't work. I'm almost 4 weeks post-op and down about 30 pounds. I've never had any symptoms from the hypothyroidism expect the weight gain. I'm on a medication but IDK just hope this works.

Congrats!! I'm actually going on 33 weeks with twins and no weight gain. I'm a year and four months out. I'm excited too!!
  12. I got pregnant 3 weeks after surgery, I was devastated, I was 41 married and had 2 kids, I never planned anymore, I just wanted to diet not have kids kinda thing, I considered all options. 7 weeks later I miscarried and it actually upset me a lot but I got on with the diet and put it behind me. I had gone 8 years using the withdrawal method and never got pregnant. Two months after that, low and behold I was pregnant again, unplanned. This time it was a shock, but after losing the last one, it put babies v diet in perspective. I continued dieting, lost 75lbs (45lbs whilst pregnant) and had my band de-filled by 2.0ml at 20 weeks. My pregnancy was great, loved it! I lost 28lbs within 2 weeks of giving birth .. I guess that was baby weight gained and with bump and baby weight gone I was a new person - so much smaller than I thought I would be. My son Nixon is now 8 months, he is a joy and the best thing that has ever happened to us. I have maintained my weight whilst breastfeeding but had my band filled last week so I can continue my lapband journey. Lots of people get pregnant whilst banded ... the weightloss changes your fertility for one thing. Dont think its the end of your diet, just keep eating healthily, put your baby first, be sensible, listen to your Doctor. I was a plus sized Mum to all 3 of my kids, dont be embarrassed, we have the right to have kids like everyone else and we dont all have complications, there will always be bigger moms than you, the nurses have seen it all. I started the journey at 325lbs, now about 260, long journey still ahead ... and a cute baby boy to accompany me with it. Be prepared for when life throws you a curve ball! Good luck x

    African American Sleevers

So I'm new to this site but I'm happy to be here and thrilled to find a forum for black folks. I'm 26 years old with no health issues until I found out I had hypothyroidism 3 weeks prior to surgery which explained the excessive weight gain! This made my choice easier. I'm 4 weeks post-op down 30 pounds sleeved on 9-18-13 and I did this to remain healthy! :-)

My surgeon relocated from my area but I am working closely with my primary care doctor. She seems to believe the thyroid medicine caused the weight gain my stopping my metabolism. However I stopped the medicine two months ago and still have been gaining.

    9-10 months out Gallbladder removal

I had mine out when I was 17, 100 yrs ago. It was the start of my weight gain. You have your sleeve so I think that will help a lot
  19. Yes - they are the ones that gave me the medicine that I think made me gain the weight. I stopped taking it after I gained 30lbs. I guess it was too late because the weight gain continued. I tried to lower my calories as I use to - 700 calories for me in a day use to be no problem but after that medication I now seem to be hungry all the time. While I still it small quantities and small amounts with each setting, I eat more now that I use to and my pouch - most times has no issue. I eat about 6/8 ounces maybe depending on what it is - however the body craves items that are easily liquified and I am conscientious of that aspect.
  20. I am desperate so here it goes........I am approx 4 years out from my sleeve surgery. I thought I was doing good and my biggest issues was how to gain weight. My original weight PreOp was 240 lbs - 4 months ago I had maintained 135 to 145 lbs for 3 1/2 years. Friday i will be 44 years old. Although I thought I was dealing with anxiety for all of 2012 this year I was finally diagnosed with an over active thyroid. In 4 months I have gained 50lbs and now weigh 191 as of doctors visit yesterday. I am devastated am desperate to get the weight off but I have no idea what to do. I was wearing a size 2-4 and now I need all new clothes including my undies.......I am embarrassed and have been spending a large amount of time inside. Everyone keeps saying the extra weight looks good but I know better. My health is at risk and I feel like I have somehow failed. Anybody have a similar experience or care to provide some advice?

    I hate eating.

Whatever you do PROTECT YOUR SLEEVE!!!!! I use to think it couldn't be stretched, but now I am convinced. I use to be able to eat 1/2 egg and part if a sausage for Breakfast now I can eat two of each. The more get in the hungrier you can get the more you can gain due to I creased amounts if calories. BE CAREFUL - I LEARNED THE HARD WAY. I wish I could go back and change some if the decisions I made early on. Change your eating habits while you are still not that interested in eating. Protect the pouch to ensure limited stretching. Develop a process that will work for you longterm. DON'T TAKE THE SLEEVES CAPABILITIES FIR GRANTED!!!! I did and now I can't stop the weight gain. Be proud of how far you have come and know where you want to go and what you need to sacrifice to stay there when you arrive..........BECAUSE YOU WILL ARRIVE!! Bbn

Please do not worry. Weight gain is not abnormal and you will also have weight stalls. Keep taking your medicine.

Jatherley, I agree with itsMe2033. The weight gain is most likely fluid retention and the amount you ate was much smaller than what you ate before you had surgery. Eating correctly after surgery is one of my biggest concerns. It is going to take a lot of planning on my part. I have been working a lot of hours lately and have to be prepared. I will need to make sure I have some Protein drinks at work in case I don't get out on time. I come home some evenings and am so tired so I know how cooking can sometimes be a chore. I plan to have items that cook up quickly such as grilled chicken breasts so all I have to do is heat them up. A good idea is to have some hard boiled eggs ready. You can eat them alone, in salad or put into tuna salad. You've got this. You have recognized you are not making good choices and getting back on track. Good luck. I know you can do this.

    Leasons Learned

The weight gain you experienced was probably just Fluid retention, so you haven't really derailed your weight loss efforts. On the other hand, the discomfort you felt was very real. I think it's clear that you've learned from this. And it's not like you sat down and at 3 slices of pizza in the first place -- it sound like you were very moderate in your consumption. So I wouldn't give this much more thought, except that if you find yourself ordering food lean more toward the healthier choices.

Surely though with the small amount of pizza and Chinese you say you have had would not result in weight gain ? Just my view .
