    Starvation Mode After Surgery?

    Here's a question back - why are you weighing 1 day into your pre-op diet? Don't do that! Liquid diets (assuming it's a low-carb or sugar free diet) purge extra sugars from your body. Your liver stores a lot of sugar, in the form of glycogen. 2 - 3 days into a sugar free diet there's usually a rush of weightloss as these sugar stores begin to deplete. Then there may be nothing for several days, even weeks. Your body is purging other fluids as well. About half of what you lose in the first week or two, possible more than half, is Fluid. This is why so may diets are quit before they can really do anything. People start a low carb diet, lost 8 or 10 pounds in a week and think "Wow I'll be at goal in no time" (not realizing only a small portion of that (if any, at that point) is fat loss. Their body depletes its stores, puts on the brakes, and focuses on trying to rebuild the stores so there's minute or no weightloss in the next week or two, so they say "Forget it, this diet isn't working, I'm not going to give up my <favorite food> and net even be losing weight..." <- and unfortuantely when the scale doesn't change, the most frequent reaction is "I am doing something wrong" so there's a really strong emotional component as well. Gaining a half of a pound is nothing. Sounds like you could very well be retaining Water. Keep in mind that 1 cup of water (8oz) weighs a little over half a pound. Most "inexplicable" weight gains are rooted in fluid.

First my doctor has me taking 1 Prilosec daily. I recently read that taking Prilosec regularly over the age of 50 yrs, causes "bone mass loss"... makes you more susceptible to fractures.... And on top of that another side effect is weight gain! I was never told that. And I initially lost approx. 25 lbs. but now have gained most of it back. I feel like I never should have had this surgery. I had one fill of my band approx. 10 months ago. A few months later I went back and was told that I didn't need another fill as they were afraid I wouldn't be able to eat without vomiting. I guess my biggest concern now is the Prilosec. Is there any alternative? Do other doctors regularly order this? What should I do?   3. Hello everyone, here's where my story begins.... 1994 is when my weight started becoming a problem for me. I already had both of my children, one in 1990 and the other in 1991. I was about 189lbs after I had my second son and things were pretty much stable at that weight for me. I wanted to lose weight but it didn't become a serious problem until about three years later. I put on about 30lbs from 1991-1994, and it just continued to increase from there. Of course I decided to begin taking weight lost pills (phentramine/and the other phen). I both pills for about two months and quickly lost 50lbs. I thought the battle was over at that point until I gained the weight back about 6 months later (as I stopped taking the pills). I tried some of my own remedies like exercise and all types of diets. I walked and did lots of activities with my children but the weight just wouldn't go anywhere. Looking back at my weight lost journey there were a total of 11 years that I have been trying to lose weight with all types of attempts. I've taken so many diet pills and shakes that I can't even count. My husband and I attended a seminar for day one surgery in Chicago Illinois in March of 2008. In April of 2008 @ 232lbs, I decided to start working on a supervised diet plan with my doctor, I told her that I wanted to attempt a lap band procedure and she let me know that most insurance companies require that you have at least a 6 month history of a medically supervised diet. In addition to that my doctor had just started seeing a patient of hers that had the procedure done, she called her and let me speak to her to see how she felt about the surgery. I decided to go with the same doctor (Dr. Klem out of Central Dupage Hospital, in Winfield IL.) that she has since here experience was so positive. So the 6 month program began. That included Phentramine, water pill and a 1200 calorie diet plan. I lost about 10-15lbs over the 6 month time frame, which wasn't very sugnificant to me. Once I stopped taking the pills I was right back at square one.... back to 230. In September of 08' I began seeing Dr. Klem, he has been performing this type of surgery for the last 17 years, he gave me all of the pro's and con's of the procedure and told me I was a candidate for either surgery, the bypass or the lap band. My husband and I decided that the lapband was the best choice for me since I didn't have any pre-morbid conditions. The process began the next week after being catagorized as morbidly obese. By the way when I started seeing Dr. Klem I was up to 242lbs, this was barely enough to be considered for insurance (why I'm not sure...). By the time my scheduled appointment for nutritionist came I was a all time high of 247.6lbs. That was a depressing time for me, I cried when I left the office and spoke with my husband about the weight gain that I was experiencing. We decided the I should try Weight Watchers to try and work on the problem immididately, as I had developed high blood pressure by this time and my doctor decided to put me on blood preasure medicine. I began Weight Watchers which I started doing very well with and dropped about 15lbs. Unfortunately I put the procedure off because I thought maybe this would be the fix that I was truly looking for. That did not last for more than a couple of months because of the high amount of sodium that was in so many of the meals. By now it's December and I'm right back in the same visocus circle that I've been in and now my weight has really gotten out of hand. by January I was a whopping 252lbs and had a very low self esteme. I didn't want to go to any social settings and couldn't fit any of my clothes. I was up to a size 18/20...I'd never wore this size clothes even when I was 9mo pregnant with either of my children. Life seemed very glomy for me. In January I decided to get back to business with Dr. Klems office and get the show on the road. As most of you know this can be a very long process because of all of the steps you have to take to be qualified for surgery. By March of this year I was finally finished with all of the steps that I needed (so I thought). My Information was submitted to my insurance company and I thought it was complete but of course my insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois denied my case. They claimed that I didn't have enough previous documented diet attempts for at least 5 years. When I submitted 7 years straight of failed diet attempts with one diet (Dr. Greenspon) doctor. My case was taken on by the Attorney that handles lap band denied cases, which took almost two months to get resolved. Finally got approved (this was a very stressful time needless to say).:tongue_smilie:As I was waiting for the approval I decided to try another dietary option, Weight Watchers (This was so costly, but my husband wanted to make sure I tried absolutly everything.....) by June of 09, I was finally approved... Now to set the date...July was full for my doctor so I opted to take August 12th. I'm now scheduled....:thumbup:... Kept doing Weight Watchers for a minute until I ran out of thier food and I'm now at 239.5. My liquid diet starts July 29th, which does consist of some food. I am to have a protein shake for breakfast, a morning snack (which will be a fat free yogart without fruit), Protein shake for lunch, mid lunch snack (which will be sugar free jello), and then a dinner (I've opted to use a Smart One's meal which is approved by my nutrutionist as long as it has meat in it.) and I can have up to two sugar free popcicles or fudgecicles. This doesn't seem like a liquid diet but the doctor knows best and it's ment to be 1000 calories. My nutritionist said it was good that I've been on the Weight Watchers diet because it's comparable to what I will be doing except it's 200 calories less. I will continue to post after my procedure but I can say that I'm happy that it's all most time for me to get this part over with....It's been a long time coming.:confused: Start Weight: 252lbs Pre Op Weight: 239lbs Pre Surgery Weight: ???     So Scared...

    So i went in for my pre op appointment today..... I gained a pound... I was supper pissed but my doctor say my intake of meds STAROIDS are the reason... HE was soo cool.. Ihave really heard of surgery cancalation for a pound of weight gained....
  5. So i had my surgery on the 18th of september 2008. I weighed myself today and i didnt lose any weight, actually i think i gained like 2 pounds. How long before you notice any weight loss after surgery? And is weight gaining normal right after suregery? And yes i am following the diet correctly.
  6. I do understand. I took prednisone for a few months many years ago and the weight gain and other affects were awful during that short span. I understand WW and/or dieting in general is difficult which is why you got the band, but I was trying to offer a suggestion that may help you to minimize your weight gain so that you don't have to lose even more weight once you get to feeling better and get your band in working order again. I'm not really sure what it is you would like us to say to you or what kind of suggestions you are looking for so I'll just bow out now rather than say the wrong thing.
  7. The hardest part is not being able to enjoy my food like I used to I take a few bites and I'm done and food still doesn't taste the same for me...but I won't miss all the weight gain that's for sure

    The weight gain could be from the sodium in the soup. I agree that you just need to eat healthy with the correct portions and the weight will come off. Hormones and sodium can really effect our weight sometimes.
  9. Hello my fellow sleevers I am looking for some insight / stories on pregnancy after being sleeved. I am knocking on my 1 year 10/6/17 and the husband and I have decided we want to try for baby #2. I really want to try but am a little worried about weight gain. Pre surgery I was 325 size 20/3x. Before I got pregnant with my 1st I was 230ish size 16 and gained almost 100lbs with that pregnancy My fear is I'll end up back where I was before surgery. I am current 225 size 12/L which I'm happy at. I also have PCOS which scares me Has anyone got pregnant after surgery? If so how was it/is it? Did you have an issue or gain way more weight than you expected? Were you able to lose the weight? Thank you all for reading
  10. OH you wanted to lose weight and have this surgery???? Silly.... (I can be sarcastic...I've been down your road my dear). Let me just say first, I'm sorry you are suffering! I was down for just under two months, 22 days of that in the hospital having my lungs drained and a second surgery five weeks after the first. My first surgery was aug 23 and the second sept 28. I GAINED 40lbs going through much of what you did. TPN feedings, tube feedings etc. Weight gain and retention after such a major struggle is normal because your body is holding onto all of those extra fluids just in case it needs to protect itself again. I saw that gain slowly drop a few weeks after I got out of the hospital (Oct 6th) and then after that I took some dramatic losses as it finally decided I was going to be ok and the retention gave up it's battle. I'm down half of my goal weight (over 40lbs) loss now, just over six weeks after I returned home, but I was told it could take up to four months for my body to normalize again, so I was actually lucky. Unfortunately due to the trauma you have the same issue. But I assure you, it will go away. You're still too weak to get much movement I'm sure and likely you are in early stages of food I'd guess? Just like the healing, you have to give it a bit more time than anyone who went a more "normal" recovery route. My battle was hell and frankly I was just happy to come out alive. Weight loss is a bonus Right now I'd just focus on getting in all of your Protein so you heal properly this time, and your fluids, and rest as much as you need. You'll find you will see those pounds go away as your energy increases, but don't push it. You have been through the wringer, let your body rest! Take care!!!
  11. Rapid "weight" gain like that is just Water weight most of the time. If you are eating a lot of canned Soups and the like they have a LOT of sodium (salt) in them, which will make you retain water. You are probably struggling to get your water in as well, trying not to drink 30 mins before, or 30 mins after eating and eating every 3-4 hours is a real challenge (but you'll get the hang of it). This also contributes to the water retention because just as your body stores fat when you don't give it enough food, it stores water when you are not getting enough fluids in. Now you're saying, "How can I not be getting enough fluids if I am on a liquid diet?" Right? Well the liquids in your diet, the soups etc., are going to fill your nutritional needs and while they are technically liquid, there is not enough liquid in them to properly hydrate and nourish your body. Lastly, the surgery and pain medication coupled with the lack of solid foods and reduced amounts of liquids can constipate you in a big hurry. You don't really want to use a laxative but a stool softener is an excellent idea and maybe a little Fiber supplement to clean house and lighten the load a little. So, what to do: 1) Try low sodium soups, etc. 2) Drink as much water as you can during your windows of opportunity 3) Keep things moving in the lower GI (the softener) 4) Most importantly, and most difficult, put away the scale! You should not be worried about any significant weight loss/gain/daily fluctuations right now (or ever for that matter). I used to weigh myself everyday and I was driving myself nuts and often times not doing the things I needed to because I was either mad at the scale if it went up, or scared of it going back up when it did go down. I even convinced myself that I shouldn't workout as much (or at all) because my weight went up every time I went to the gym. Not significantly of course, but it went up because muscle weights more than fat and I didn't like it. Try to focus on what we call NSVs, or non-scale victories. Tying your shoes on the top of your foot, getting a towel to completely cover your body (even if it is a beach towel at first), having your pants fall down when you put your cell phone in your pocket, being able to breathe when you reach the top of the stairs....Priceless! All the wonderful little things that will happen to your body as you lose weight and get healthier. Things that you won't see on the digital scale readout. Things you might not see at all if you are only looking at the arbitrary number on the scale. Be a loser, not a number. I am 15 months post-op and down 108lbs! I started in a size 24 and I just bought a size 10 jeans for the first time since I was 12 years old! The band is your tool belt, but you still have to build the house, patiently.     PB'ing can lead to this!!! Must Read!!

    I'm sorry for your friend's misfortune. Many patients fail to report PB'ing and vomiting to their MDs for fear of receiving an unfill. A PA at my surgeon's office told me that several patients ASK to be overfilled so that they can lose weight quicker and "toss" the extra food if they overeat. An overfill not only leads to inflammation of the esophagus, but also can result in weight gain as people go back to mushy foods which are often higher in calories than solid proteins.

    Two days into post op

    Normal. Don't worry about your weight at this point, it isn't a true weight gain. Put the scale away until you start eating normally again. Try using a heating pad/taking your pain meds for the discomfort, though that's all part of the post-op recovery fun. Walk as much as you can as well.

    Slippage.. a personal failure?

    You can't change the past, but you can affect the future. Consider it a lesson learned, and get on with your life. If we were all perfect we wouldn't need the band in the first place. If it's a small slippage you may be fine after an unfill. Increase your exercise a bit and you may not have any weight gain at all. I know I'm not answering your specific questions, but just wanted to say stop beating yourself up over what is in the past.

    No Leak but No Restriction HELP

    I ,too, am having fill issues. I had my 6th fill last Wed, thought it was going to be good because when I ate soup it made all of the grumblings that I hadn't heard in months! However, two days later on solids.....NO restriction! I am a self pay and each fill is $200.......YOUCH! That can eat a paycheck quickly! So, I dunno....calling fill doc on Friday to make a fill. However, I think I will set it up after vacation! :cool2: Right now, I have been drinking Slim Fast twice a day to try and ward off any weight gain. Any helpful hints/comments would be greatly appreciated! Oh, I haven't had any good restriction in about 2-2.5 months...
  17. Did everything go smoothly? I am in the same situation. I have been approved but the surgeon's office cancelled my surgery due to 15 lb weight gain since August. They are requiring me to lose the weight before they will put me back on the schedule. This would be fine if I wasn't starting a new job in a couple of months and NEEDING to have surgery done before I start. It's either now or wait another 6 months and that is out of the question. It took me 6 months of a preop diet, another month before I got insurance approval, scheduled a month out only to be taken off the schedule a week before my surgery date. Taking 3-4 weeks to lose the 15 lbs and waiting a month before surgery will kill my timeline. I feel like I need to get the ball rolling with another surgeon ASAP. I really don't have time to wait. I have BC/BS of Michigan. Please help!

    TERRIFIED of gaining weight

    If the fear helps you to stay on track, then it’s useful. I smile when our bariatric minds can get so crazy. I get it. *laughing* I admit I have had to deal with my fear of weight gain. I always blew it when I’ve attempted to maintain my weight in the past. I would gain plus more just like you. Funny and not funny where the mental battles take you. I also obsessed my way through weight loss phase. I can’t say it was a bad thing, it got me to a healthy weight. I had to really think about if my fear was healthy. At times, it has not been. Third year I had a gain (I worked it back off) I freaked out. It really messed with my head. It took me on the crazy train trying every diet, logging and obsessing. Ugh not a healthy head space. It’s taken some work to relax and to trust myself.
  19. Hi jubie. I gained weight while in the hospital too. I went into surgery dehydrated from the preop diet and of course I had an IV running, so the extra fluids are what caused the weight gain. It will come back off in the next few days. No worries. Im 5 days post op now. Good luck to you!
  20. Metformin not only helps stimulate the pancreas to do its job which will stop the weight gain. It is also used to stimulate ovulation for those trying to get pregnant. I had to stop taking it pre op because my sugars were going too low. It is originally intended for.diabetes, the perk of helping infertility was a bonus that blessed my life. I have noticed that I am losing slower than non pcos wls patients, I don't think it has anything to do with the metformin, I think it is the pcos. I'm just hoping with pcos that the more I lose the better things will get. This surgery was supposed to cure it (according to my surgeon). I can remember when I was 16 I.was skinny as a stick and I still had issues. My ovaries hurt so bad and my period was so erratic. I couldn't do bc cuz pill makes me psycho. New Life Started 07/24/12

    Gaining again help!!!

    Maybe because your activity has slowed that might account for the weight gain. Make sure you get some exercise, how about walking? or just marching in place? I know you have to be careful with your arm. Make sure to get plent of water in. My wt loss slows when I do not drink much water. Get your protein, that is your priority and get your calories in as per suggested per your doctor. Not enough calories may have slowed your metabolism. It is hard to avoid the sweets but I know I did not want them around the house for quite a few months. I ate yogurt and cheese sticks and fiber rich water and jello. It is hard, but you can do it. I am 1 year out and have had a great loss of 110#, but now had to get an unfill do to something caught and not eating for a week! Now I have gained 8# and have no restriction and old eating habits are hard to forget. Obesity never really goes away. I will always have to be conscious of what I eat. Once your arm is healed you can step up the pace. It is a learning experience as we go along and the support along the way helps! I used the beneprotein for protein also which is reasonably priced. Protein drinks help, egg salad, tuna salad, etc... Maybe you are too tight? Just try things and see how they go. Good Luck!

    Just keep saying, "I can't have that (food item) now, but I will have it next year." It also helps to think of all the negative outcomes from cheating. Add them all up. List them. Convince yourself of how bad they are for you right now and how they will derail your progress. Then when tempted, tell yourself, "It's just not worth it!" And it isn't. The shame, guilt, physical illness, weight gain/stall are NOT worth it!

    Hello Sleevers, I have a dilemma. I went to a physician I've only been to one time in the past 24 months. She had my bmi at 39.7 (ridiculous) and I have no co-morbidities. Can I get a referral from another physician and send in only that information to the sleeve surgeon. I really did not do anything with this physician, I sat with her for about 15 minutes. I have scheduled myself to meet with another physician before my surgeon iniitial visit on July 29th where I plan to get a referral. Does anyone know if that is okay, I just want to make sure I am able to do that. I know some of you said you gained weight in order to be covered, did anyone have to go back to their physician with weight gain, and were you successful? I so want this surgery and I'm so close, I don't want a BMI of 39.7 to mess this up. Help me please!!

    Diabetes and Lap Band

    I hadn't heard that Byetta would erode the band! I need to talk to my surgeon b4 I go to my diabetic doctor. I walk daily, sometimes in the morning and sometimes after work. It all depends on how I feel in the morning, I have never been a morning person and usually get up in time to get ready for work. But I always get my walk in. Once my doctor says I can lift I am going to start using my weight bench 3 times a week as well, I think he said 4-6 weeks after surgery, which means I have 2-3 weeks to go! I am hoping that I won't have to go back on the meds, it is so nice not to have to take them at all! I have some female problems so I have had the Depo shots every 3 months and that also promotes weight gain. GRRRRR. but as of this morning I am 23 pounds down. Hopefully things will work out.

    chest tightness

    I have the same problems, was banded on the 7th. I called the nurse regarding the pain, and breath shortness and I also have nausea. She said it was mostly from gas and bloating and that my weight gain. Almost 20 lbs. was due to the fluids and the gas I received during the surgery. Today a bit better, I think it's mostly gas and now my stomach is very empty and making loud noises. I walk around and that helps. But I'm still really tired. I have my 1 week appointment after surgery tomorrow. Hope I can get something for the nausea. I also got on the scale and I am down to 207.5 even though my stomach is bloated, you an see it, my arms and legs are thinner, looks very strange believe me. I look like a pumpkin on sticks LOL. I hope that boating goes away soon had to wear my ugly pants when I went out to the store today. UGGGGG. Also I have had a bit of diarrhea, it's horrible and smells even worse, have a metalic smell and my mouth tastes that way, I wonder if that's from the Protein shakes. It's pretty disgusting. Just hope I feel better soon. This is a bit rougher than I thought it would be. But since I am older than a lot of people here I chalk it up to being old LOL. Take care Pati
