    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, here I am... 3 months into this stall. Still 265 today. I feel pretty good. I did have a couple bouts of arrhythmia earlier in the month that I can't explain, but pretty good since. Clothes fitting looser, weights getting heavier, but the weight not moving. My doctor is not going to be happy with me if I don't make some progress between now and my May 15 check up. I have not been good about my tracking lately. I need to cut out the alcohol too... week days are good, weekends get me. I'm still good about getting to the gym 4 to 5 times per week and my diet is not horrible. I just need to figure out what to do to break through.
  2. I have an appointment next week to discuss revision of RNY. What do I have to say or do to convince the surgeon I need this revision??! I had my original surgery in 2014. I lost 100lb in about 8 mo. Since the pandemic I have regained about 50 lb. I am so miserable. My BP is elevated again, sleep apnea returned , osteoarthritis acting up. Help me please, someone.
  3. I had "buyer's remorse" the first couple of weeks. It's common - and people usually get over that pretty quickly. a lot of women notice crazy hormones the first few weeks or months of surgery (weird menstrual cycles and emotions all over the place). It's because estrogen is stored in fat cells, and it's released during rapid weight loss. It'll stabilize once your weight loss slows down.
  4. My two week anniversary today (lost 10.4 kilos since my bypass, 22.93 pounds) and generally had good progression over the time. I’m shocked by how little I need to eat so far in purée section but presume this increases over time. Biggest shock is how easily I cry over emotional or sad things. Cried seeing someone who I thought might be homeless yesterday. Not that I was emotionless before but gee, this has been a ride lol I have had moments of regret and realisation of what I paid to have done to me. I doubt these will Continue past a point but my mind has been my biggest enemy, the rest, so far, has been good.

    Health Anxiety?

mortality rate on gastric bypass is 0.3%, and it's even lower on sleeve (can't remember the percentage on sleeve other than it's lower). That means you have at least a 99.7% chance of making it through just fine. Those are better odds than hip replacement surgeries. major complications are pretty rare. The most common complication with bypass is a stricture (also known as a stenosis), which happens to about 5% of bypass patients. That's a very minor issue and is easily "fixable". I had two of them - one at four weeks out and the second at eight weeks out. They just do an upper endoscopy and stretch it out. Easy peasy. You're right in that complications, if you do have them, will usually crop up during the first three months after surgery (strictures do - they're extremely rare after that), but that doesn't mean you're at any great risk. It just means they usually show up early, if they show up at all. Lots of people on here have never had any complications at all. And again, the vast majority are minor and can be fixed. After the first three months, you're pretty much home free (that's not to say that complications will never show up after the first three months, but they're very rare after that). quit reading the horror stories. I read those too and they scared the crap out of me, so I made myself quit reading them. I've been on this board for eight years, and most of us have no complications at all or very minor ones that can be fixed. you are at much greater risk by staying obese than you are having the surgery.

    4 days postop! ~ ♡

Almost 11 weeks. The nurse did tell us if we had any issues to use a stool softener and make sure we are hitting our fluids. Some from my support group do a suppository when things do not move for a while.
  7. Does anyone else have health anxiety regarding this surgery? --- I'm so worried about developing stenosis, blood clots, or sudden heart failure! I made the mistake of looking into the death statistics and the most common deaths from gastric and how it mostly happens up to 4 weeks after surgery due to those causes. Age range 32-54 and weight 285-400+ -- Likely overreacting, but it's a huge worry of mine. I'm constantly checking my incisions and moving just to avoid it. I read we're high risk up to 3 months post op. -- I had surgery Feb 2nd 2023 *~☆AnxiousMommy☆~*

    February 2023 surgery dates!

My surgery date is February 20th. I’m excited and really nervous. I also just started the liquid diet and I’m praying I can make it these two weeks.
  9. Getting a sleeve 2/13!! Just had my preop class and one more week of my liquid diet and it then surgery!!
  10. I recently started supplementing my daily cardio with weight training - I am seeing a personal trainer now two mornings a week, I noticed in the personal trainer sessions I’m getting lightheaded. I don’t experience the same lightheadedness during intensive (Zone 4-5) swim or other cardio workouts. Im pretty confident this lightheadedness is an issue of properly fueling myself for a weight training workout. THE ASK: I’m looking for suggestions of what I can eat in the morning ahead of training to better fuel myself to prevent lightheadedness . Secondarily I’m also generally interested in what you all eat prior to workouts. - My current routine includes a Premier Protein and a protein2O energy at 75 mins and 30 mins before a workout as well as at least 8oz Water. -  I’m 2 months post-sleeve and my nutrition plan at this stage allows only the following in addition to our protein: 1 serving of fruit and 2 servings of non-root vegetables.  Additional background: Before you suggest the below I’m already aware of, actively monitoring, and confident these things are not to blame: - Im well rested -it’s rare I don’t hit 8.5hrs/night. - I’m getting easily over 72oz of hydration daily - I’m averaging between 80-100 protein/day. - I was active before my surgery and have worked with trainers and weight training extensively in the past - the work I’m doing is not new to me. For example in the year before surgery I’ve deadlifted over 250lbs. **** I’ve also reached out to my nutrition team with this query but was interested especially in hearing from anyone else who has experienced and overcame this.****

    4 days postop! ~ ♡

the first BM often takes up to a week. First of all, there's not much in there - second, the anesthesia can affect that. And just a warning - the first one can be a doozy. You might want to start taking stool softeners or Miralax to make the "passage" a little easier... and just so you know, you may have issues even after this. Chronic constipation is a common issue for us (not everyone deals with it, but a lot of us do). I've been taking a capful of Miralax every morning for at least seven years just to keep on top of it.

    LOST MY MOJO

I'd check to see if they can put you on something else. There's so many birth control med options that I'm sure there are some that don't have those effects. I was on one once that made me really depressed - and I'm not a depressive person. My PCP put me on a different pill, and the depression lifted after about a week.

    LOST MY MOJO

Hi KCuster83, sorry to hear you are going through this. When I started birth control after surgery I started with my old one, but notice how nauseous and anxious it made me, two weeks later I decided to try a progestin only, which is night and day. Hopefully you can find something that works better for you.

No energy 5 days post op sleev

This is what I experienced. I spent the first 2 weeks just sitting in a recliner sipping. After 3 weeks off I returned to my job and went straight to bed exhausted when I got home. It was another week or two before I felt like I had normal energy levels.

    4 days postop! ~ ♡

Congrats on your surgery. I did have the sharp pain when coughing but I have pooped everyday since surgery, I'm a creature of habit so I go every day at the same time, grabted now I have to sit for 30min to make sure all is out. You seem to be doing better than me with the protein at 4 days out, my main concern was water then after week 1 was having protein too. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

No energy 5 days post op sleev

yep. Normal. You just went through major surgery. It took about two months before I felt completely back to normal, but you get better and better every day. The first couple weeks are the hardest. BUT....they'll soon be over!

I would check with your dr for sure (and report back). I routinely walk over 10k steps (a week post op now) and wonder what will happen when I bring lifting. How have you been feeling post work out?

    January 2023

I have a question to everybody: I am 4 weeks out and already back to exercising (I have been exercising regularly for 2 years and is quite fit for my size). I am instructed to eat no more than 600 calories a day but I am already burning more than that working out (today I burned 1000 calls at orange theory then 400 doing Krav Maga (self defense) class). Is 600 clas enough? I am not hungry and have lost 21 lbs since op day. Thanks!
  19. I hit one for a while but am 45 lbs away from my goal and according to my dr I only have a few more weeks to reach it. He wanted me there by the 6th month and I don’t see it happening… I am so disappointed!
  20. Stick to your pre-op diet best possible. It might be hard, but after surgery all those cravings go away really quickly. Weight loss feels controlled, stable, and predictable. The first week I was tired and had discomfort from gas in my body cavity that felt intense but was gone at the end of week. I spent much on the first week in bed resting. The second week post surgery was my stomach acid week I’d wake up at 5am and feel like I had a belly full of acid. Not super painful, just annoying and that symptom went away at the end of week two. I was back to work and up and about week 2 but sleep early or naps in the afternoon. Week 3 is when my progress allowed me to move on the soft Proteins. What was most noticeable this week is that occasionally I would get extremely dizzy with the room spinning. I realized this was due to seasonings or Condiments with minimal sugars but the first sugars I had experienced since surgery. Those first 2-3 grams of sugar /food iwould cause my my insulin to over compensate and my blood sugar would drop real low. That happened for about a week and a half 1-2 times a day and then my body adjusted and I haven’t experienced it since.   I also experienced a bit of nausea at this time as I tried new foods and learned to slow down eating but never have actually threwup. I’m two months out now. Only remaining symptom is light fatigue and occasional nausea as a reaction to eating something new or eating to fast. But it’s super tolerable and not as bad as it might sound. ALL OF THIS TO SAY: some of the initial symptoms may seem miserable or annoying in the moment while your body is adjusting to your surgery, but understand most of them will pass in a week or so they aren’t there for the long term. Be kind to yourself, allow yourself to rest, and focus on your Protein and hydration above all else. You got this!
  21. Good luck March surgeries and congrats on taking this step. I was sleeved 12/5. The two biggest comforts to my recovery were an electric heated blanket and sugar free popsicles. The heated blanket really helped soothe the gas discomfort that can be expected in the first week and any soreness. Best of luck.
  22. Yes. I was in bed for most of the week following my surgery taking slightly longer walks each day. I was up and around almost like nothing happened the second week with the exception of the need for a nap in the afternoon or super early bedtime. I’m two months out now and I’m still dealing with some fatigue … I go to bed early and my swim speed is still about 10sec/200yds behind my pre-surgery pace but definitely night and day from the week immediately following surgery. Remember surgery is a major trauma to your body and we heal the most efficiently at rest. Make sure you are getting some walks in but allow yourself the rest :)
  23. My surgery date is February 20th. I have pre existing blood clots and have to inject myself with Epogen. I am on the 2 week liquid diet now. I am not a bug eater to begin with and have done 30 day juice fasts so I am mentally prepared for the two weeks. It's the Epogen that is a doozie. I already have lupus and fibro and this medication makes my bones and muscles hurt and now.I have the chills. 2 doses down 10 to go! Sent from my SM-A326U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Sleeve revision to bypass 2/6.

I went from sleeve to bypass on 12/27 for the same reason. In my experience, the recovery is easier because you've gone through it before. I ate better and more varied foods during the liquid and pureed stages this time around. Know how they tell sleeve patients they need to chew very thoroughly, but how you don't really need to? You definitely, definitely need to with bypass. Small bites chewed to a paste. Cues for fullness change for sleeve, especially once you're 3-4 weeks out. Your sleeve has a valve that opens to release food into your intestine just like a normal stomach. A bypass pouch doesn't have that; as you heal, liquids and purees will move immediately through your pouch. That changes what fullness feels like. For me, I don't seem to have a setting between hungry and overfull anymore. My body isn't really telling me I'm full so I pay a lot of attention to portion size to know when my meal is over. As for vitamins, I just ordered Barimelt brand from Amazon. Their calcium, B complex, and multivitamin+iron. They taste alright.
