    Should Worker's Comp Pay

I was about to ask how in the world you got WC to pay for bariatric surgery to begin with, but then re-read what you wrote and now I get it. That's an interesting scenario, and I can definitely see why they'd fight having to pay for a sleeve, but I can also tell you that, having worked at the WC center for General Motors at one time, probably 95% of all lawsuits brought against the company by the employee are won, and that includes completely ridiculous ones like "I can't work because I'm an alcoholic because my job made me that way," or "I can't work because of the mental problems caused by my job..." yeah, totally serious. I'd say if the job caused removal of the band, and now you can't have another band, you'd stand an excellent chance of having your WC pay for a sleeve, maybe even without much threat from a lawyer (although you may still have to initiate that process). Hmmmm, interesting. Keep us updated!

  3. Thats awful that you call and getting the wrong information. Im sure it happens everywhere all the time however, when it comes to policy information reps should always be up to date....considering this policy changed 6 months ago...they should know by now. I finally spoke to a rep who IS up to date. She ensured me that there is no longer a specified # of months within their bariatric surgery policy, which means its totally up to your provider (surgeon) if they decide they want you to be on a MSWLP 1-12 mo's which in most cases they do to help shrink the liver. I asked her how I can best transfer this CORRECT information to my provider and she gave me her extension however calling would be difficult, so my best bet would be to just call them and let them know I spoke with the rep and was informed of this change and the updated policy.....which i did before!
  4. Hello, all! texasmelody here, about 16 days after getting my sleeve here in Dallas. Dr. Castro was my surgeon, and I had the sleeve at Baylor. I began my pre-op diet exactly a month ago, and in the month before and after the sleeve I'm down 43.1 pounds -- so, only about another 260 pounds to go. Sheesh! Everything seems to be going well so far. I've had the usual intestinal distress, but that seems to be calming down. I've had a couple of occasions where stuff seems to sit in my chest. Distressing, but do-able. I've had some early-run dizziness that turned out to be the fact that my blood-pressure dosage was suddenly too high -- so that's now been cut in half. Woot! So...now, just experimenting with Protein powders and flavors. I love the Isopure Zero Carb bottles, but hate the cost. The Bariatric Advantage stuff turned out to make me VERY sick. Not sure why. So....I would love it if you guys would weigh in with your protein recommendations -- or, ideally, the best place to pick up the Isopure Zero Carb Grape Frost stuff. Look forward to interacting with you all! Big group hug, texasmelody

  6. I had this surgery solely to be healthy when husband and I want to start trying to have a baby. Did any of you have trouble finding a doctor who was well versed in bariatric patients?
  7. I have esophageal dilation from my band causing achalasia symptoms. I was told RNY might be an option, but after removal was told the tissues at the lower esophagus are too damaged to tolerate further surgery. I would see an esophageal surgeon to consult on your options. They generally work closely with the bariatric department and can give you a better idea about further surgery. Good luck!

    Wls out of town

I had my RNY at a CENTER OF EXCELLENCE also. I traveled 2 hours from home. I had to stay 1 week in a Hotel and went home after my 1 week check up. Not all CENTER'S OF EXCELLENCE live up to their names. My Surgeon did mine and my hubby's WLS. He was a good surgeon but really lacked at bedside manners. He called me a PROBLEM CHILD because I had Strictures and he had to do follow up care on me. 2 months after my RNY he did a failed revision from a lap band to a RNY on my husband. Who developed abscesses also was labeled as a Problem child!! Come to find out our MEDICARE and other insurance paid a certain amount for our surgery and aftercare. So he made his money doing the surgery not so much for the aftercare. So we ended up firing him and going to another BARIATRIC CENTER also an EXCELLENCE CENTER which is 4 hours away. So happy with our decision. But our blood test are faxed to our Bariatric Center. I am far enough out that I don't need to see them only if I have a problem. Better care, which helps with our confidence in them. Well worth the move!!
  9. I have an expiring upgrade (by Feb. 28) on American Airlines that I thought would be nice to give a fellow bariatric patient who might be flying a distance and would appreciate the extra room (obviously you won't be able to enjoy the food or drink). You need to already have your ticket purchased. Upgrades aren't always available and I'll want to make sure it clears immediately when requested. Let me know if you are interested.

Yes, yes, and yes.... I just started this pre-op process a few months ago. I would adore getting together with others locally that have gone through or are going through this process!!!!! That would rock on so many amazing levels!!! I feel sort of lost in the process a bit. My bariatric specialist is zany and never really tells me where I'm at in the process, really. Except that I think I'm in the middle of it... ugh. I almost want to switch programs completely, but I don't know if that is possible since I just finished the psych eval and nutritional eval requirements, just need the letter from my doctor and a couple more months of my diet. But again, my bariatric specialist has not been a wealth of information at all.

    My Sleeve Story 1-9-12

My bariatric surgery program required at least two visits with a therapist to complete a psyche evaluation. It was my choice to continue the sessions. With a few exceptions I have seen her weekly since April 2011. She has helped me deal with so many issues, including my addiction to food, low self esteem, etc. I will continue to see her post surgery. I doubt I would be successcul without this counselling. Hope that helps.
  13. IV Tylenol and advil are staples for bariatrics where I work. Every patient gets them (OFIRMEV and CALDOLOR) Im surprised they're not more commonly used tbh

    Day 3 In The Hospital..

You would be one of the very few, I am losing most of my friends pre surgery, and kicked hubby out yesterday... On the farting, it's a true story. Anew bariatric friend I met in the hospital was walking with me, I wasn't passing gas, and she said something and made me laugh. I started tooting, and we passed a. Nurses station and laughed some more. I tooted All the way past it...it was a scream!!

    Can't handle the vitamins

I was allowed to swallow real Vitamins at 7 days post-op. You shouldn't be taking your multi-Vitamin and Calcium within 2 hours of one another. Iron (in the multi-vitamin) and calcium compete for absorption. For my bariatric multi-vitamin, I take Vitaleph. And for my calcium, I take Citrical Plus D3 Maximum. Make sure you are taking calcium citrate and not calcium carbonate.

    OK...I drank the Kool-Aid

@@gowalking it sounds like you are just living life as a "normal" person. Someone who eats healthy most of the time, binges on a few treats on a special occasion and then goes back to eating healthy. Congrats! I always indulge on cocktails and Desserts and very non-bariatric friendly foods when I'm on vacation. I don't deprive myself of any of the yummy traditional foods over holidays. But then I'm right back on track afterwards. In fact, I've even started doing "preemptive strikes" to minimize the weight I have to lose afterwards. I will go back to basic Protein and veggies or even put myself on the liquid preop diet for several days prior to the times I know I'll be eating off plan. This gets me to the bottom (or even under) my bounce range, so any weight I gain isn't so bad. Even if I gain a few pounds I'm usually still in my bounce range and I go on with life as usual. If at any time I'm above my bounce, it's back to basics. As long as you acknowledge those small gains and do something about them, they won't get a chance to become big gains. Remember when all our skinny friends would complain about gaining 5 pounds like it was the end of the world? Well now that's us! And we have the power and tools to do something about it and STAY skinny people!

    New with questions!

If you've selected a surgeon, their insurance staff would have a very good idea how appeals work with your insurance. Since bariatric surgery isn't a standard covered item, they appeal and work with insurance companies every day.

Can someone please offer me some advice

Even still at the 6 month point, we need to make the most important things getting in the Protein (60-90gm or whatever your surgeon recommends), and at least 64 oz of water/liquid every day. This makes a big difference in our weight loss. And I agree with other posters--starchy carbs this soon after surgery can really mess with our weight loss. The more fresh (or frozen) veggies and (limited) fruits you can get in, the happier your body will be to let go of those pounds. Sorry you're dealing with stressful stuff at work. It's one of the biggest life stressors that drives us to making unhealthy eating choices. The stress isn't likely to go away, but WE can learn ways to COPE with the stress so we don't end up sabotaging ourselves by choosing our old reliable, comforting food, like we always have before our surgery. It takes work, but there are a lot of self-help resources out there to begin taking charge. We owe it to ourselves. Celebrate the 40 pounds that you HAVE lost, and if there are some things that you need to do to get back to your original Bariatric Eating plan, it sounds like you are ready and committed to moving forward. That's the key--move forward from here--don't look back!

Penicillin post 5 month post op-----ouch!

Call them back! They might be able to give you an injection of antibiotics instead, or your bariatric surgeon's office might be able to advise you on a way to help protect your stomach while you take them.
  22. So I'm over a year & a half pos op.. I just met the most incredible man a couple months ago and we are now dating and sexually active.. is there any birth control out there that is safe for me to take? Should I go ask my gynecologist about this or my bariatric surgeon? Please help!

    Vitamins I love

I always take mine at bedtime, never with food. I’ve been taking these for my last two checks and all perfect levels. All Bariatric patients can’t eat or drink at the same time, I doubt they would put it on the market with that assumption. Also, if you have a small sip of water before a meal, that isn’t going to hurt you. It’s the act of eating while drinking that can cause problems. I hate for you to pass on an awesome vitamin for these reasons.
  24. Hi all, I had my 8 week visit with the Dietician today and have been progressed onto 'normal foods'. Yayyy! I've lost 12.5kg (28 lb) since my Op & feel good. She was happy with my weight loss, but slightly concerned how quickly I'm losing and queried whether I have been eating enough. I assured her that I have and don't let myself get too hungry. I've only been walking 2-3 times a week and she doesn't recommend upping the ante just yet as I'm still recovering. She said I can try toast, crispbread, soft drink & I alcohol (keeping in mind it will affect me more). I also told her how I've eaten chocolate and wasn't scolded- just told it's a 'sometimes food' and to know my limits. It was pleasantly refreshing because some people in the bariatric community talk like it's the antichrist lol I can hear the US weight loss patients collectively gasp at how much free reign I'm allowed. I have faith in her professional advice as she works closely with my surgeon, who is well regarded in my state & has trained most other GB surgeons in the city. What I am wondering is whether other people have been given the same advice. I don't really have much contact with other GB patients in Australia, so can't compare. I wonder whether pre & post op diets are that much stricter in the US because insurance companies fund the surgery costs, therefore want the patient to drop weight super quickly? I might be way off....I don't know much about US insurance. I just know that I paid hospital cover for 12 months and was instantly approved for surgery, whereas it seems like the process is much more complicated in America. So glad to be progressing on to the next stage in this journey.

    Cigna

I am working through my preoperative requirements for my Cigna policy right now. The policy from my summary plan description requires a physician monitored weight loss and exercise program monitored for at least 3 months monthly visits (>89 days) which actually means 4 visits. I also had to have a psych exam, and a few other things that I can't think of right this minute. I was referred to Cigna policy 0051 updated 05/2014 for the bariatric surgery. Good luck to you on this journey and remember there is always tons of support and knowledge here for you!
