Thanks, everyone, for the great responses. I will keep all these words of wisdom in mind while on my journey! P.S. Yes, I lost waaay less weight on Weight Watchers, but the reason why I chose bariatric surgery is precisely because the other methods weren't working. So, yeah, I have high expectations. But as someone put it, once that weight is loss, it's not coming back. I know I have to concentrate on the direction of the scale, however slow it's moving.

I was swallowing pills hours out of surgery it was fine but a tad sore. \ Although I can't tolerate Multivitamin pills for some reason within 5-10 minute of having one i vomit. So been having chewables but just ordered some official bariatric chewables which should be of better quality than the ones I've been having.

Starting Over Again
MowryRocks replied to Krystyneh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah mine requires 6 consecutive months with a nutritionist with the last 2 years which I have a year straight so that's no biggy. I am worried my insurance will deny it and how much I'll need to pay out of pocket. I know some of what they want. Will the Bariatric program tell me? I know they usually check with insurances about that stuff. Yes, they will verify what is needed and let you know and my 10/26/2016. -
I know that the Last Supper idea is very tempting, but my bariatric nurse told me not to do that because it makes it so much harder to handle the liquid diet. Therefore, I'm trying to cut down on food portions and have even begun to have a protein shake instead of breakfast. I plan to transition to protein shakes for breakfast and lunch before I go on full liquid. I sure hope that plan will ease the shock of liquids only.

La di da, la di da...COME ON! UGH! Waiting just sucks! Met the surgeon. He had a whole schpiel about Bariatric surgery. My BMI is low enough to make the LapBand work for me but high enough for RNY to be an option. He said he'd go either way with me since I'm not diabetic and my blood pressure is just on the boarderline. So the desicion is still mine. That made me happy! I was worried I was going to be pushed into bypass and I really don't want that... So the Realize Band is the band this surgeon likes. A few days after my appointment, a person from the surgeon's office called and asked about my insurance coverage. She said she was going to request my records from my PCP and send me in the info for approval. I didn't think it'd be this fast!! Who knows though, I probably won't pass the first round anyway, right?

Complication insurance for Mexico self pay

I went to Obesity Contol Center. It is an International Center of Excellence in TJ. My surgeons were Dr. Ariel Ortiz and Dr. Arturo Martinez, both Bariatric Surgeons of Excellence. Dr. Ortiz is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has actually taught laparoscopic surgery technique in the US and Canada. Fantastic care while there - the entire staff is dedicated exclusively to bariatric surgical care, they were friendly, incredibly helpful, skilled, and spoke perfect English. The followup communication is also great. They have been available for any and all questions I had both before and after surgery via phone and email, including the surgeons, cardiologist, nutritionist, anesthesiologist, office manager and followup Doctor. Much easier to get a hold of than the US surgeon that removed my gall bladder! My PCP has taken care of my postop bloodwork. That's really the only followup care I've needed. My OB/Gyn actually offered to do it, too. -
I've never heard that. I've been cleared for surgery and I have bipolar. I've been seeing a psychiatrist for years but the length of time was NEVER an issue. What was the main focus was.... Was I STABLE. AS long as my condition was stable and I passed the standard psych eval that everyone must go thru.... I was cleared to proceed. Your bariatric clinics will put you through all the standard testing and make the determinations. In fact they never even contacted my psychiatrist. They asked for a letter of medical necessity from my primary care Dr then they put me through a psych eval with their own psychologist. I bet if you call the clinic and ask them directly if you will be automatically denied if you haven't been seeing your psychiatrist for at least a year for your bipolar you'll be denied....I bet dollars to donuts they'll tell u that's not true. Go ahead.... Call them. That's the best place to get the info u want.... Straight from the horses mouth. Sent from my moto e5 (XT1920DL) using BariatricPal mobile app

Do I need surgery still? A reality check

Without knowing you, I'd say you're falling into a delusional trap. Here's the deal. The vast majority of us can lose weight just fine without the help of surgery. However, most of us cannot keep the weight off without bariatric surgery. After losing the weight on your own without surgery, there's a 5% chance of maintaining a massive weight loss. There's a 95% probability you'll regain it all plus more. When we lose weight on our own, a few months pass before the body fights like hell to regain. You become tired, hungry, and develop cravings that overwhelm your capacity for willpower. With the neurohormal changes prompted by surgery, you'll actually have a fighting chance of keeping the weight off for life. Bariatric surgery is the only proven method that helps formerly obese people maintain whatever weight they lose. Without surgery, you'll climb an uphill battle for life. Good luck to you. -
I’m in the pre-surgery stage as well. Here is all the things my program encouraged me to start before surgery. The last 3 months I worked my way up to working out 5 days a week for at least 30 min. It was a slow progression but I really think it will help me after surgery. I also drastically decreased my sugar and carb intake. I measure, weigh, and track my food and water. I’m trying to learn to eat slower. That is so hard for me! I also quit all carbonated beverages. I am half way through a required 12 week class on healthy weight and my bariatric class is in October. Only then do I get to make an appointment to see the surgeon. It is a long road to surgery but I think that is a good thing. It gives me plenty of time to prepare and be really sure I can do this. Also, I’ve lost 35 pounds so far. That is a nice bonus! Good luck on your journey!

I don't take a separate iron supplement because I have a specific plan with my Hematologist but I took Bariatric Advantage chewable iron tablet for a bit and it was decent tasting in my opinion. They have different doses so you might want to consider asking your Doctor which one is best for you if interested.

I am going to loyolas bariatric clinic in Chicago. I finally got a call today to schedule my appointments. I have to see the bariatrican, dietitian and psychologist in that order. Unfortunately the first appointment with the bariatrican is march 8th! And then the other 2 appointments are on march 16. I am thankfully on the waiting list to see if someone cancels sooner. I sure hope so, considering it's 2 months away. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I think that is the pill that I'm on, but I only have to take two per day. They are kind of big, but fortunately I don't have issues taking pills. I think if you contact bariatric advantage they will send you a sample. I take two of those and two calcium chews every day.

Bariatric Advantage capsules
mytwopugs replied to Jennifree's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have the bariatric advantage ultra with iron. They are too big to swallow and yes you have to take 3. I empty all 3 of them and mix them into one of my protein drinks. There is a little bit of a twang but it's not too bad. You could probably split them up as long as you wait the 3 hours before/after calcium. I still have to try and get the calcium pills in but I've been putting that off. I'm struggling with all of the pills I have to take and I admit sometimes I take a day off! I take other meds for an existing condition, so taking those plus the Prevacid and potassium to heal, plus stool softeners and vitamins.....ugh. AND, they want me to quarter all of my pills and wait 15 minutes between each piece. So basically I take something every 15 minutes from morning until I go to bed. I miss popping 2-3 pills at a time with a gulp of water. This is actually the hardest thing for me, as I don't really have any other issues so far. I would crush everything but then each meal would be hideous. Wish there was a daily IV I could hook up to! -
prisytomboy i did nothing special to prevent me from losing my hair i take the required Bariatric Vitamins., nothing extra I take 325 mgs 2x a day of Iron - but i was always doing that per my PCP It was the luck of the draw for me that i didn't lose my hair kathy

I have no idea why I had no hair lloss. I asked my doctor about it since I read on here that so many have it, and he said he didn't realize that would happen, that he never heard of any of his patients saying anything about hair loss and he didn't know what would cause it. Other than anesthetic causes it sometimes, but he said that usually happens right away. I have always taken the Bariatric Advantage chewable iron and multi vitamins. I drink almost a gallon of water a day. Never had any complications of any kind.

kristaroberts, Allot of the issues with becoming pregnant after weight loss surgery, or rather immediatly after have everything to do with nutrition and stress. The issue is that you are already desperatly trying to learn how to just get enough nutrition for you let alone a baby. Also you have to think about the added stress that being pregnant puts on a normal healthy person and then imagine that on a body that has just undergone WLS. Getting pregnant soon after weight loss has a risk of several complications. I would advise you to speak to your bariatric dr as well as your nutritionist on this. Basically what i have read in some of my research is that it has happened and you can be successfull, however, the issue is that "can be". The risk vs reward is not there. That is the risk outweighs the reward. I wont go into detail but if you do some research you will find allot of issues can develop and most are in relation to the normal growth of a healthy fetus in relation to the nutritional issues that can develop. Its not the end of the world if it happens, but you will have a heck of time with the nutritional requirements. Obviously the further out the better, or at least after the majority of the rapid weight loss is done "says 2 bariatric surg. i found online info from." Great question!! Ps i'm not a lady but wanted to add my 2 cents sorry =(

And I'm so excited! I've spoken to the staff of Dr. Roberto Rumbaut and also to the staff of Dr. Miguel Zapada-- Dr. Z looks to be a bit cheaper and still highly recommended, so I'm guessing he wins this race. I've researched both surgeons as extensively as I can and asked all of the questions from the sticky about Mexican bariatric surgeons... I feel comfortable with either . Also... And THIS is a biggie... I've convinced my husband that going to Mexico is NOT "sheer idiocy" (his original wording) but rather a necessity as our health insurance is worthless in this case. I don't think he LIKES it, but... He IS willing to accompany me (I have a 6 month old nursling who'll have to be tended to while I'm in surgery-- he's gotta eat!). I'm waiting on a check in the mail before I book my surgery... And then it'll probably be about 6 weeks out as I need a deal on airfare and without booking 6-7 weeks in advance, the prices are just a bit steep for me. Now... I'm just want that check to GET HERE! It could take another couple of months, though (geez, I hope not!), so... For now I'm going to work on cutting all caloric drinks out of my diet as that could be a big problem-- even banded... And I'm going to start stocking up on Protein drinks. I hear Isopure plus is the best tasting? I'm just ready to get it done, now... I'll be stalking my mailman even moreso now!!! -
Mussels and other seafood with a Lapband
JerseyMom29 replied to UpperWestSide's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Just saw this recipe at Bariatric Eating website., Maybe it will help, Most italian restaurants will usually have this or variation of this on their menu. Seafood in Tomato - Fra Diavola When we traveled to San Francisco for the bariatric surgeons’ convention, we sampled lots of fresh local seafood served simmered in traditional tomato based sauces such as this one. You can use mussels and shrimp as I have chosen for this version, or create your own favorite, using scallops, crab, or even a whole fish filet or cubes of a firm fish such as swordfish or mahi. I serve this delectable seafood and sauce in a deep bowl with a sprinkle of flat leaf parsley and plenty of crusty sourdough for the family. 12 garlic cloves, chopped (about 1/3 cup) 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1/4 cup olive oil One 28-ounce can whole tomatoes in purée 2 tablespoons tomato paste ½ teaspoon dried oregano 2 teaspoons dried basil 1 cup white wine or chicken broth Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 pound mussels 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and cleaned Cook garlic and red pepper flakes in oil in a deep covered heavy skillet over medium heat, stirring, until fragrant but not browned, about 2 minutes. Add tomatoes with purée, tomato paste, oregano, basil, and wine. Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally and breaking up tomatoes for 15 to 20 minutes, until sauce is thickened. Season with salt and pepper. Just before serving, increase heat under sauce to medium high, add shrimp and mussels, cover and cook until mussels are open wide, checking frequently after 3 minutes. (Discard any mussels that remain unopened after 6 minutes.)Serve immediately. Per serving: Calories 310, fat 16gr, carbs 8.5gr, Protein 28gr Serves 4 http://www.bariatriceating.com/BErecipes/recipefiles/fish--seafood/seafood-in-tomato--fra-diavola/163/index.html -

Yes, yes, yes!! Actually, my clinic has monthly meetings and invites speakers. One of the most interesting was from a personal trainer who offered specialized and modified exercises (like from a chair instead of the floor, etc) and equipment (that he designed himself (mostly just extensions to machines, etc) and the other was from a yoga instructor specializing in modified yoga for 'round bodies'--also from a chair--because many obese folk have knee problems and can't kneel. My guess is if you contact the local Bariatric clinics with a viable exercise plan and modifications to suit the patients/client as they are now and as they lose weight, you will be welcomed with open arms. Go!! Ducati Bonnie -
Made to feel guilty by Family Doctor?
MsShay replied to PianoLady's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My local VA has a bariatric program and when I approached my primary care doctor about getting the lapband outside of the VA she was upset. She stated that one of her other patients went through the VA program and had lost 20 lbs prior to his lapband surgery and then hadn't lost any more weight after that. I told her that I was not that patient and that I had done my homework. A month after surgery I went to see her and all she could do was parade me around and call me "her success story/" I just have to laugh about it. My only complaint is I am tired of people telling me to stop losing weight before I start looking sick or too skinny. These are the same people that tried to talk me out of it when I was big. -
Sorry about this gross question...

I am on day 8 pre op diet . I am having 3 protein drinks, using a lemonade flavor I bought at bariatric choice.com. I also can have 1 lean cuisine a day until days 12 &13 then just liquids. I have lost 8 pounds so far, hoping for at least 12. My surgery has been moved up a day due to having to change hospital because of insurance coverage! UGH! No problems with stools yet, hope it stays like that! Good luck to you!
