I Have Now Changed Insur To Health Net
Alexandra replied to SQBEAR37's topic in Insurance & Financing
SQBear, every plan is different so no one can give you any specific advice. I do know that HealthNet is band-friendly, so if you qualify medically and your doctor recommends this surgery for you there is definitely a history of HealthNet covering it. Start with your PCP and discuss your weight and weightloss attempts with her. Establish your history of obesity in her records and (if you don't already have it) get a firm diagnosis of "morbid obesity." Contact your carrier and have them send you their diagnosis and qualification criteria for weight loss surgery. Once you know what Healthnet requires, you'll know what your next step is. Good luck!! -

Glad to hear that they don't think you have a leak - it sounds like you are to tight - eat very slowly - chew well and take tiny bites - little sips of water - if you are having too hard of a time - you can always go back and have a little taken out. I was too tight for about a week after a 1cc fill - my doc took out .08 cc and now I still have restriction but can drink a cup of coffee in the morning w/no problems.. Plus as you loose weight the band is suppose to loosen - but make sure you get your protein and fluids in - that's very important - and take your vitimans. I find if I don't I bruise really easy... Our bands are so fickled - they just don't make sense at times... Blessings

I was banded Dec 16. My weight before starting the preop diet was 240. On the day of surgery weight was 228. One week later at my first post-op visit I was 228.4. My doctor said that was good because he used over 6 pounds of fluids during surgery. I was told at that visit to eat anything I could smash with a fork for one week then move to solids. Today January 7 my weight is 220.3. I have my first fill on January 17. I am worried that I am not losing as much as I see others on this board. I am so afraid that I am going to be one of the people who does not lose even after being banded.

Blah... everything submitted on April 11th. Keep calling to check for updates and was told today that they are requesting an "interpretation of my weight history". WTF? My PCP submitted my weights for the last several years in a graph form, which clearly shows the weight and date it was taken. What else do they want?? The surgeon's office said they will take care of it but I'm so irritated, lol.

Hello all, I have been a lurker for a long time. I have been researching the lap band procedure for many months and have decided that this is the route I need to go. I come from a family of very overweight people that have never successfully lost weight for good. I have dieted since I was 18, every diet under the sun, only to gain it all back and more. I am going to be self-pay and have a BMI of 33. The problem is I live in Central New York and cannot find anyone that will even talk with me. Both because I will not be using insurance and because of my low BMI. I am so jealous of those of you that live near a "band friendly" surgeon. I am at a loss. I really don't want to travel far for the procedure, mostly because I want to have somewhere local if I have a complication or need a fill. Any advice? Thanks, Laura

Newbie here...1st consult 5/1/15
skmnine replied to Jazziminna's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi! I'm new here too. My first Bariatrician appt is on 4/27 and my first surgeon appt is on 5/4. I'm excited, nervous, impatient, emotional all at the same time. My insurance required 6 months of supervised weight management. So I guess I will be starting jumping through the hoops (blood, ECG, upper gi, psych eval, nut consult and monitoring, etc). We are embarking on a life changing journey and I couldn't be more grateful for this forum. There is so much great advice and support here! -
So I am a younger male, I have always loved lifting weights and have always been very strong. Since my surgery I have been lifting again (not nearly as heavy as I used too) I have increased my cardio portion of my workout. But, just wondering if any of you still lift hard and heavy and if you have had any problems with this or have you noticed any successes since your surgert.

Can't do anything over ten pounds for a year, due to my hernia repair, so I can't say anything about that. But please be careful! Make sure you get clearance for the weight lifting, I'd hate to hear YOU got a hernia from it!!! But I am envious, as I am so weak in that area, and always have been. Good luck to you and a Blessed Easter!

Port Revision and First Fill....
savannahsmommie posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I went in for surgery this morning because my port had turned upside down. I switched to a new surgeon, because my previous (original) surgeon was not very good. The new surgeon said that it looked as if the 1st doc has attempted sewing the port to my ab muscles but only one 1 side. So he reattached it to the ab muscle and then sewed my back up. To my surprise he also did my first fill. He gave me 6ccs. He said he always starts off at six when the band holds 14ccs. He also said he did not understand why I was given a 14cc band because the Standard AP Band that holds 10cc would have been perfect for me. Oh well, can't change that now. The surgery went great, only I am more in more pain that I was when I got the original lap band done a month a half ago. My incision is a bit bigger. but he did it over the previous incision. I hope this 6ccs gets me over my platue and back to losing weight. Anyone else have this happen? -
Ok so I said I would not buy a scale this time around because I didn't want to become addicted like I did in the past when I had tried another weight loss method that made me lose weight. But now I'm having 2nd thoughts.
-
I do the same. I am not on a 'diet' as such - I wanted the band so I could get away from obsessing about diets. But while I am still a 'newbie' I have been watching my calories and try to keep it around 1000 - 1200. This also helps to tell me if I need more fill. Don't obsess about the weight loss it will come once you start getting your fills - just use the time till then to heal and experiment.

I also think they are not complex carbs, but the kind that are digested quickly, like sugar. I wonder if they would cause a rebound hunger an hour later. I'm going to try to stay away from white carbs, which is something I've had to do all my life. If I look at bread, I gain a pound! Same with corn, peas, etc. When I crave carbs, I go for beans, which are acomplex carb and high in protein.

Nervous About Stress Test and Endoscopy
laceemouse replied to Casds84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had several cardiac tests in the past (strong family history of heart disease) and I too was very worried about the stress test. I was obese and out of shape and I have never been athletic, even when I was normal weight I could never run for more than a few seconds. The stress test was very easy. They are trying to get your heart rate up to a certain level and then see how your heart responds to working at that level. For a fat, out of shape person like myself it didn't take much to get my heart rate up. I would say it was very slow, easy jogging. The guys running the test were awesome, very nice and funny actually. When I got my heart rate up to speed they counted out loud how long I would have to keep jogging, so I knew there was an end in sight! You will be fine. -
I wouldn't. I continued my workouts through that process. Any weight you can lose beforehand is weight that you do not have to lose post surgery.

Diet Pills and Protein
neenee717 replied to LookatmeNow34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok me personally I think its ridiculous! I used to take adipex and when your off it you eat like a maniac, it has potential to raise your blood pressure, mess with heart etc. I figure why bother with lap band if your gonna mess with that stuff, which only can be taken short term because of the risks. Im so glad my surgeon didnt play that. Hence I had to be in 6 month pre op program and managing on my own. You dont get restriction right away. I was banded on 9/16/10 and getting scheduled for my 3rd fill this month. I can eat whatever without restriction. I have my bad days where I fall off wagon and eat too much, but then I have to reel it in. Doc says you usually dont get good restriction until after several fills. Anyway didnt mean to be crude or sound so harsh, I just feel so strongly about taking weight loss meds and them not being successful -
I'm also doing the 6 month thing. my surgeon has a NUT on site and I have already seen her my PCP is doing the monthly weight in and was advice by him to try and lose 10-20 pounds before surgery and to always try to make it before the date of my 1st weight in. Good Luck to you.

I found that the preop diet was rough for the first couple days but after my body adjusted it wasn't to bad, hopefully it will get better for you. It's also helpful to concentrate on why you are doing this and how much better you will feel after the weight is gone. Good Luck.

Perimenopause
southernsoul replied to Tina Naillon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tina, I just turned 49 & have been perimenopausal for about a year. My periods got out of control & unpredictable, so I had a Mirena IUD put in & that helped a LOT. I was sleeved on June 19 & I'm doing really well. I have no idea when full-blown menopause will start, but I hope I can lose all the weight I need to before then. If your peri is just beginning, do you think that your stall may just be hormonal & the weight will start up again at some point? The word "impossible" seems like a big leap to make, but then I'm not a doctor. Good luck! -
I went in this afternoon my 2 week post-op appointment. My recovery has went smoothly up until yesterday when I noticed redness around my largest incision. Today it was even more red and started oozing this afternoon. So now I'm on a 5 day round of antibiotics. Hope it clears up soon! Good news is my doc was happy with my weight loss and moved me to pureed foods! Refried Beans never tasted so good!
