Food Before and After Photos

@ryandafatty I can tell in your face you have lost weight for sure. What do you mean you can’t breathe? Have you talked about this to your doctor bc that sounds like that would be a scary feeling -
I'm almost 2 years op post VGS. I had lost a total of 80lbs but in the last few months I have managed to gain 30lbs. I've gotten back into my old habits and I feel like a complete loser. I don't know where to go from here. I want to reach out to my doctor to help me get back on track but again I feel like I've failed and I'm embarassed. Does anyone have any advice on how to get back on track? Any help is appreciated.

I had the gastric Sleeves, done on Wednesday the 15th, 2023. I was 266 pounds. I'm now 5 days into having my surgery. Didn't weigh as of yet. Will do my weight taking on Wednesday to see what I have lost. So far, I felt it in my clothes so far, and I lost my taste bud.

So depressed about my hair
SophiasChild replied to Candigrl1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I completely understand the hair loss as I have thinned ALOT! My biggest thing is I didn't even think about it happening until it did. I was focused on other things, so it came as a surprise. Every time I plateau I start to get it back, only to lose it when I start losing weight again. I'm hoping that it comes back better when I'm done and only maintaining. Hello, all I just submitted all of my required documents for surgery. I have a BMI over 40 with no comorbidities. Insurance list they need this documentation: a description of the proposed procedure(s) documentation of failure of weight loss by medical management unequivocal clearance for bariatric surgery by a mental health provider a nutritional evaluation by a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered dietician I did all but I am a little confused, because many people are stating they have to do a diet for 6 months etc. Is "documentation of failure of weight loss by medical management". Does this mean they need a diet or just a letter from a PCP, because my doctor sent letter to PCP that stated, "the patient has made multiple weightless attempts and has been unsuccessful". PCP signed it and that was sent over to the insurance company with all other documentation. Just nervous and wanting to be reinsured I don't need a diet program to be approved.

I love that analogy so very much. It’s like a form of self parenting. I am going to journal about this and make a little sign for my surgery /weight loss success self care box. 💜

Questions - Contemplating Surgery
hills&valleys replied to Devi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am having VSG surgery at Endobariatric with Dr. Alvarez on 3/3/23. Dr. Alvarez's fees are almost twice that of other sugeons in Mexico but his credentials, professional memberships/affiliations and surgical success/risk rating is among the best of bariatric surgeons internationally .... I am confident in my choice! You need to evaluate whether you are mentally prepared to make permanent changes to your relationship with food. Emotional eaters frequently go through a mourning period because it is harder to depend on food as a crutch to deal with life's problems and disappointments. WLS does not force a person's compliance. Adherence to a structured plan is essential to success. WLS is not a cure all or quick fix....it is a tool which can HELP us but we still have to be disciplined and put in the work. Not only do we need to physically prepare ourselves for WLS, but mentally as well. Drastic weight loss can cause fluctuations in hormones which can create an emotional roller coaster ride. If you are suffering with episodic periods of depression, i strongly suggest working with a therapist before pursuing WLS, which is a dramatic life changing event. Best of luck to you! -
Questions - Contemplating Surgery

you do have to comply with your clinic's program or you'll eventually regain weight (although a 10-20 lb gain once you hit your lowest weight is very common - and almost expected. I planned for that when I set my goal and went a bit under goal to compensate) that said, I'd never been able to lose weight and keep it off. I was over 200 lbs overweight, and I lost 50 or 60 lbs God knows how many times, only to gain it all back. I got the surgery (in my case, bypass) because if I couldn't even keep off 50 lbs for more than a couple of months, I knew there was no way I could lose and keep off 200 lbs. BUT...this actually worked. I did actually lose all that weight - over 200 lbs. Your stomach will be a lot smaller so you can't take in a ton of food AT ONE SITTING - plus, most people lose their sense of hunger for a few months (up to a year) after the surgery. Having no hunger makes it much easier to lose weight. Once the hunger comes back, though, which is does for most of us, it'll be more of a challenge. You're still not going to be able to eat a ton of food at one sitting, but you might start grazing or eating mindlessly if you're not watching yourself. So that's when you have to really make sure you're continuing to comply with the program. people gain weight back because they stop being compliant and old habits start creeping back in. As before, you still won't be able to eat as much as can now AT ONE SITTING, but if you're snacking all day, yep - you'll be able to take in a lot of calories. The examples I always use is that before I had surgery, I could eat half a large pizza for dinner. No way could I do that now. It would be physically painful. All I can manage is 1-2 pieces. BUT...if I ate 1-2 pieces at 5:00 pm, and another 1-2 pieces at 7:00 pm, and 1-2 pieces 9:00 pm, (which would be easy to do), I'd end up eating half the large pizza. So THAT'S what you need to watch out for. the surgery in and of itself shouldn't exaggerate depression. If you're feeling depressed, though, it'd probably be helpful to work with a therapist. A lot of us do - both for that or to deal with eating issues (unfortunately, as they say, the surgery is on our stomachs, not on our brains). where are you living in NC? I lived there for 10 years. I went to high school in Raleigh and when to college up in the mountains. My brother still lives in NC, so I still get down there occasionally... -
Weight loss stall 3 weeks out
Arabesque replied to Shineaiggy29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It happens to most people. It’s your body reacting to the stress of the surgery, reduced caloric intake, etc. Your body has just temporarily taking a time out. Your weight loss will start again when your body is ready - usually 1-3 weeks. Stick to your plan & breathe. Don’t stress yourself more. Take some body measurements. Some people notice a change on a tape measure even if the scale doesn’t move. -
I am hoping to have the money for a gastric sleeve surgery this year. I have been reading and watching videos and trying to take it all in. If I have failed at low carb and other diets, how will the sleeve be different? It is a tool, but it ultimately requires lifetime compliance to food and lifestyle changes. So far I have a lifetime of failure at compliance. I am sure I need to spend some time on my mindset in general. If bariatric surgery resets the set point and helps change the metabolism, how do people end up gaining all of the weight back? Will this exacerbate depression? Will it help or hurt low self worth? I see that some people end up very depressed and others feel so much better. I am pretty sure I can't take being more sad about life and my weight than I am. I will be doing this totally alone. I have no friends and no family in the place I moved to. I am hoping that feeling more confident physically will let me feel better about joining art classes. I am also planning a move to a more populated area this year. Many thanks.

I cannot lose any weight after 1 week post op!
Arabesque replied to aaleee97's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Stalls are very common & yes, the first one usually occurs at week 3 though it can be earlier or later than that. They usually last 1-3 weeks too. They’re your body shutting down & taking a time out in reaction to the stress it’s been under (surgery, reduced calorie intake, etc.). Stick to your plan & it will break when your body is ready & the weight loss will start again. Go back to your team & ask for more information. You’re paying them to support you & you have the right to ask for what ever information you need to feel comfortable & confident about this process & what you have to or can do . We all have different needs (what I was told may not be completely right for you) & they should be there for you. Can’t complain about an almost 7kg weight loss in 4 weeks especially with a stall. I’d lost about the same in my first month (& I never really stalled during that time). My surgeon & dietician were very happy. Not sure of your starting weight, but remember those people who lose those large amounts of weight seen in programs like My 600lb Life started at very high weights. And they only lose at that rate in the beginning. -
Surgery more than 2 years ago?
BriarRose replied to Bandedbut's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved a dozen years ago. I was in my mid 50's. I started at 320 pounds, lost 25 pre surgery, then lost to about 175. I stayed at about 180 for many years, but gained after some very tough emotional times over a few years to 220. But kept that 100 pounds off. About 4 years ago, I decided to try to lose 10 pounds in a year. I lost 10 in a few months, doing nothing but being intentional with what I ate; and going back to protein and veggies first. Over two years I lost 40 pounds, realizing that I needed to learn how to maintain my weight - so I would stop losing weight every so often (usually after 8 to 10 pounds down) and NOT lose more, but maintain where I was. How much was I eating, of what, when.... how much was I moving... watching myself and re learning ! I maintained my 175 pounds for another full year - about 7 months ago I decided to lose another 10 pounds. Got there and a few under. I am finally at 29 BMI ! I weigh 162. Less than I did in college in the 1970's !! Loose skin ? Yes. But at 67 next month, I do not want any elective surgeries. I wear a size 14 petite jeans. I have a ton more energy at 67 then I had at 54. I am still working and I organic garden, raise laying hens for organic eggs. I never liked carbonation, so that was never an issue. I eat a healthy diet. I grow fresh greens and veggies. I eat fresh fruits. I eat kind of low carb - if I have a sandwich with bread, for lunch I won't eat carbs for breakfast or dinner. I eat a treat every day. Even when losing weight. But now I can enjoy an oreo, or 2 little dove chocolates..... Or one skinny cow dessert. I had company for dinner this weekend. I BBQed burgers. I ate a half of a hamburger - half the bun, and some fresh fruit salad. I was almost on over fill ! I use most carbs as sprinkles. If I eat Asian, I order chicken and veggies. I sprinkle rice on top. Steak ? Sure. crumble part of a baked potato with it. I steam most veggies at home. I make fish on the grill a couple times a week and then make it into a salad the next day for lunch. I eat differently than I did before. I am healthy and happy. No regrets at all. -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
BigSue replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oh, man, I have so many horrible memories of those chairs with attached desks. I haven't encountered one since I lost weight, but now that I think about it, I kind of want to see what it's like to fit into one comfortably! Yes! I used to hate booths so much, but I was too embarrassed to speak up and ask for a table because I was too fat to fit in a booth, so I just had to hope and pray to get a booth. I wonder if servers think about that. You would think it would come up often enough that they would try to be nice and default to a table when they see a plus-sized customer. Anyway, it is nice not to have the emotional burden of always having to wonder if I will fit into a seat. -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

I know exactly what you mean about being self-conscious about food in public, and I've been in that same situation of not wanting to bring food back for someone else because I know no one would believe me. That is very cool that you can feel free to carry two plates of food now. Sadly, even after losing the weight, I still hate eating in front of people and I still carry that shame about food. Even when I'm eating healthy food, I still feel like people are watching and judging what I eat. A few months back, I was buying fish at a seafood market and I asked for advice about how to cook a certain kind of fish, and the lady at the counter started to say it's good fried, but then she stopped and said, "Well, you're probably into healthy cooking, right?" based on nothing but looking at me, and it felt so weird! I don't think I'll ever lose the scars of being the fat girl. -
Just stepping into this forum ... I'm scheduled for the LSG on March 11. Frightened about complications but very very excited. I've battled my weight my entire life -- the fat small kid. But it was made so much worse by dangerously high doses of prednisone and decadron to treat my asthma. (Even as a kid I thought it wasn't professional that the family doctor would come to my house, give me the drugs and then give me a huge shot of adrenalin in the morning -- but never took me to the hospital ...) Anyhow I'm 57 with a 42 BMI and I so want to get back to something below 30 -- and stay there! Any tips, preop advice? I'd be really grateful! Thanks!

Weight loss stall 3 weeks out

Did your care team instruct you to weigh yourself daily? That would be too much for me to weigh myself daily since our weight fluctuates. -
Weight loss stall 3 weeks out
catwoman7 replied to Shineaiggy29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
here are the 17,501 previous posts on the 'three week stall" (and no, I am NOT kidding). Happens to almost all of us. I wish bariatric clinics would tell their patients about this, because we get at least one post every day from someone worrying because they're only a couple of weeks out, and their weight loss has stalled. It is normal and it happens to the vast majority of us. https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three week stall -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
gmast99 replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I haven’t checked in for a while. Doing great here. So far no complications. I am down to 185 and feeling great. I pretty much made it without any of the difficulties. I never really got foamies and don’t think I got sick more than 5 times and most were in the first 6 months. Now I can pretty much eat whatever I want I just get full really quickly. My body has relearned its relationship with food and unlike the old days the minute I start to feel full I totally lose my appetite and just want food to go away. I probably need to work on my protein intake since I still love carbs but no one is perfect. I am glad everyone is doing well. It is not a quick fix like I thought it would be but overall I feel like it was a healthy way to lose weight. I am medication free with normal labs and blood pressure now and no more CPAP. -

I cannot lose any weight after 1 week post op!
NP_WIP replied to aaleee97's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I will suggest staying away from the scale, just do once a week, and if you see no changes, do every 2 weeks. It is common for people to have stalls and fluctuation in the weight due to water retention etc. I would weight myself more often in the beginning but realized the pressure I was putting myself on so moved to twice a week or once a week and I have not seen any stalls and I concentrate on the whole picture not just on one week, otherwise I tend to have obsessive behavior with my intake. -
Kind of freaking out a bit, I'm 3 weeks post sleeve and my weight loss has stalled for the past 4 days. I'm scared I am doing something wrong and not even realizing it. Has this happened to anyone else?

I cannot lose any weight after 1 week post op!
vsg2410 replied to aaleee97's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
There are a lot of factors that go into weight - hydration, constipation, fat loss vs water loss. It can be extremely frustrating to not see a change on the scale but trust the process! The weight loss is not linear. As for your diet plan - is there someone you can reach out to at the office to answer those questions for you? My surgeon just has protein and hydration goals - no calorie limit. For reference it ended up being about 600-700 calories per day in the soft food stage. -
I cannot lose any weight after 1 week post op!

So I haven’t been able to lose any weight since the 2nd week mark of my weight loss journey. I’m 4 weeks out today & ive only lost 6.7kg (1.1 ish stone) I’m feeling so disheartened and don’t know what to do or what I could try. My diet plan from the company I had my surgery with, was awful! I’m not even sure what foods I should and shouldn’t be on. I don’t know how many calories I’m aiming for or capping at…. What exercises are allowed other than walking. I’m just really struggling at this point and I’m not getting decent results, especially compared to those surrounding me! Like seriously it’s turnt my life upside down (which I could live with if the results were decent) and the results aren’t changing. One whole week. My weight loss stood at exactly 6.7kg loss (the exact same to last week.) Any help? Or anyone going through the same!!? -
Yes, I’ve heard it. Not really from my family but I used the big boned excuse myself. A lot! Many years ago I went to a large chain weight loss centre where they measured my wrist & told me I was large boned. I clung to that from that day on. Logically I should have known I wasn’t. I mean I’m short & it was obvious I didn’t have a large skeletal frame when I wasn’t carrying weight in the past. Truth is I actually have a smaller frame. The ‘large bones’ they measured was just fat around my wrist.

Coming back to this topic, because now I've started getting the "don't lose any more weight!" and "you're not going to lose any more are you?" comments from people. Super awesome. They never would have dared say "you need to lose weight!" when I was morbidly obese, but now that I'm a normal BMI (not underweight - normal) suddenly it's ok to comment. 😑 I know there's a bunch of factors going on there, it's a rich tapestry of psychology to unpack etc etc, but it's interesting to see how you escape one type of social scrutiny only to wander into a different one.
