    9 months post op, weight loss stopped :(

    Hi there I’m exactly where you are I’ve been in a 3 month stall from months 6-9 and haven’t lost a single pound although I am about 12 lbs from where my goal was. This is however frustrating as I am eating under 1000 calories exercising 60 minutes daily by walking… the only thing I’ve slowed down on is my water intake which is about 42 oz a day. I’m wondering if this is the reason my weight has stalled…or perhaps it’s due to my exercise since I’m only walking but I do average 3 miles a day. They do say the closer you get to your goal it can literally stop…but this is a very frustrating feeling to have especially since my surgeon said after the one year point the weight loss generally stops….

    Aah the debate over BMIs. Think of them as a guide only. There are too many other factors that influence your weight & what is healthy for you. If you carry a lot of muscle you will weigh more & will have a higher BMI. You may have a small frame & so a lower BMI may be more appropriate. Neither means you’re not at healthy weight for you. So who can really say what’s perfect or not. At the end of my first appointment with my surgeon, when he had gone over my weight loss & gain cycles, my eating habits, general health, lifestyle, etc, he asked me where I thought I’d like to be. I told him 60kg as it was always my lowest weight. Honestly I would have been happy at 70kg. Anything was better than being 91. He told me he thought it was achievable. It was, plus more which was reached without trying to lose more. Which is where my body must have wanted to be. Instead of setting a lowest goal weight, set a couple of happy weight points like @ShoppGirl then see where your body settles. You can lose more if you want to be more restrictive with your diet & are willing to undertake more activity. As long as that’s sustainable you’re golden All the best.

    Sounds like your psychologist may have dealt with a lot of disappointed patients in the past. I have never had an ideal weight suggested to, or discussed with me by surgeon, nutritionist, or psychologist. I've been told repeatedly that the average loss at 5 years after sleeve gastrectomy is 70% or thereabouts of excess weight. Big ballpark. I want to be much lighter than that so I have set my goal for a weight I have been at various points in my life and felt suited me. If I don't reach that, or anything near it, I might be be a bit miffed, but I'll still have lost loads of weight and be way healthier than when I started out, and that's what really matters to me. My body has a new set weight as of surgery day, and my job is to find that and make my peace with it, or consign myself again to a life of fighting my own body to lose weight it wants to hold on to!

    Others can suggest goals but … it’s your body and ultimately your goals. My surgeon didn’t give me a target either. Just shared stats on average weight loss for my procedure. I have two goals. One is how much weight I need to lose to be healthier and feel like I can move freely. Another is a lower weight that I used to be a while ago. As I get closer I’ll find out how achievable that second goal was and adjust as needed.
  5. I am just starting the process at 48 years old. I tried when i was in my late 20's, fought hard, got an approval and then chicken out as my babies were all little. Now here I am again. I don't have my consult until March so i wanted to start thinking ahead. Regarding Anthem Blue Cross, am I going to have a documented supervised weight loss plan on record or can i just document my attempts at diets like 'keto';etc? If i do have to document, is doing Weight Watchers through the App sufficient? Any advice anyone can give me is great. My BMI is 59.

    This TOTALLY happened to me! The good news is that the wagon is still there. You’re WORTH it!!!! Don’t give up. Stop/drop/roll - call your dietician immediately! 🙂. I waited 3 months because I was embarrassed. Had my 1 year surgery follow up. Was so nervous - I put myself in a total panic and broke down crying. The surgeon kindly laughed and was like you LOST 97 Pounds - that’s 77.8% of your EWL. He explained that EWL is the Excess Weight Loss. Ask for your percentage. He said that as a surgeon, they anticipate/ hope that in 18 months you lose 75%. The dietician came in who I’ve been in amazing contact with until I stalled. I was embarrassed. I haven’t lost a pound in 3 months. We talked - came up with a solution and it’s working. They see this ALL the time. It’s not a personal failure. They will help if you ask- I promise. You’ve got this!!!!! You’re amazing and so is your body!!!! Everyone’s journey is different. Have you heard of Unjury?   7. Welcome & congratulations on your surgery. Never be afraid to ask for help. This process is not always easy. Many hiccups & roadblocks along the way as we work through the crap that lead us to being overweight. We don’t talk about the importance of doing the head work for nothing 🙂 Were you recommended a therapist as part or your pre surgery program? If not ask your team for a recommendation to someone who specialise in eating disorders & bariatric patients. You may find working with a therapist about your cravings & night eating very helpful. There are many people on this forum who have benefitted from working through their food obsessions etc. with therapy to understand what’s drinking them to eat & finding strategies to manage those drives. Good luck & congratulations on your weight loss so far. It’s just the beginning.
  8. I'm doing good still! I over shot my weight loss goal of 140 pounds all the way to 125 but have regained those 15 pounds in the last 3 years. I dont want to get back down just stay the weight I am. I pretty much let myself eat whatever I want, just try to stick to the rules of no snacking, no drinking while eating and no drinking 30 minutes after eating.
  9. Hi Jerald, thanks for reading all that I hope you'll get over COVID and back to good health soon. So a few things on this. First of all, there can be numerous reasons for making a shorter bypass (see below), and a 90 cm BPL is still longer than many RNY'ers bilio-pancreatic limb bypass (it turns out their afferent limb still absorbs calories). However, while the RNY ends up being almost only a restrictive surgery, the MGB remains a malabsorptive surgery. Most MGBers can eat all kinds of food at reasonable volume pretty quickly. So if we have a malabsorptive procedure, more malabsorption is better, right? Well, generally it's not the malabsorption that helps us. Sure, it's nice to not absorb 300-400 calories or whatever, but it's primarily the fact that the food gets to the lower intestine really fast that makes us lose weight. You know that feeling of 'oh man I had a big meal' you get pretty much immediately after eating anything a little heavier? At least many MGB'ers describe this as tool #1. Why a shorter bypass? Some surgeons want to make sure older patients don't get malnourished (I don't know how old you are). Some surgeons believe a shorter bypass is almost as effective (again, the difference between 150 cm and 250 cm in the studies is pretty small in terms of weight loss. It's the fact that there's a bypass that helps). What if it is too short? Well, then enjoy you had a surgery that's easily revisable. It shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes in general anesthesia to move your connection further down. Your weight loss seems fine, btw! But if you need to, the inventor of MGB, Dr Rutledge, is very responsive on Facebook and even does free consultations for MGBers as far as I've seen. He really is in it for the health and for the surgery. PROTEIN! Btw: really, really, really try to get that protein in. Especially with a surgery like ours. I also completely lost my appetite during COVID but 60g isn't a lot. Get some of the hot protein cocoa on the BariatricPal Store, the protein muffins, the quest protein chips, the oatmeal ... something. At any age over 40, you want to preserve as much muscle mass as humanly possible. Even a week of atrophy (wasting away muscle tissue) will measurably lower your burn rate. You will regret that later.

    We have the same surgery date I got VSG how are you doing with weight loss still? I’ve been super careful and the loss is slow but I’m down 32 pounds only 70 more to go (only lol feels like forever in front of me still)
  12. Here's an update. I started on Weight Watchers Personal Points (WW) on December 20th. I lost 5 pounds in the first 3 weeks, which was slow but acceptable and I understood that I wouldn't bet a huge initial loss because I had already just lost 25 pounds on another eating plan. Then for the last 2-3 weeks I've been in a stall. I had forgotten all about stalls. Turns out that between adding 90 minutes of cardio every day since Jan 1st and only eating my Daily WW Points (25 points, about 1000 calories) I wasn't eating enough. Once I started adding in the extra allowed Weekly points the scale started moving again. So at this point I'm still happy with the WW program and think it's do-able and going to work for me. Slow and steady wins the race. I'd like to lose 20 pounds but I'm not setting a goal date for that. I'll get there when I get there and reward myself along the way for my consistency in food tracking, water intake, and exercise.
  13. Okay, so it's been two full weeks on the WW program and I've lost 3 pounds. I'm happy with that rate of loss and feel like it'll increase now that I'm transitioned fully from a no-carb diet to a more well-rounded diet as there would have been a period where I would have gained weight when reintroducing carbs. Overall it's easy to do, kinda fun to track and measure and explore. Plus you can't beat the variety of foods you're allowed to have. Anybody else doing WW?

    October surgery friends??

    Checking in! Howdy! This month has been alright. Met with my PCP the day after my 3 month follow up with my surgeon. Everyone is pleased with my progress and I'm on the right track. My menu has been opened up to "normal" foods for the last month, but I've yet to come across foods that don't agree with me (just have to have food or a shake before vitamins or else ugh). I've definitely lost more than I've ever lost on any previous weight loss program (max was always 35lbs) and every day I'm amazed at how I've adapted to making this a true lifestyle change. With prior programs, there was always that moment I could just get off track and stay there. With this, I am linked to my surgeon's office through Baritastic (so they have access to my food logs) which adds an extra layer of accountability. I'm also self-pay, so I have a lot of skin in the game riding on this. I'm on a pretty regimented schedule for intake because I can only do 4-6oz of stuff at a time and that stuff is usually something that is going to help me meet my daily goals. As I get closer to 250, which is about my lowest weight as an adult, I can't help but be a little nervous... like "What if I get stuck there and can't push past it?" Ridiculous thoughts, but still acknowledging they're there. I've found my area's support groups to be a major help. It really helps with getting my headspace in check and thinking about things from different perspectives. I've also seen performance increases in my gym. I've been regularly working out (5-6 days a week) since being cleared for it and at Orangetheory this past month for both benchmarks, I PR'd. On the 200m row, I went from 40.65 seconds to 40.1 seconds. On the 1 mile benchmark (3 miles on strider for me), I went from 7:39 to 7:14 shaving a total of 25 seconds off my time. Things feel easier in a smaller body than I had before. Anyway, that's a long post, but this is the month where I'm finally feeling that "It's finally happening," feeling.

    Sorry to hear about your grandma — that must be rough. I wouldn’t worry about 2 pounds; my weight often fluctuates more than that in a single day. By now, you’ve most likely developed healthy habits and as long as you don’t stray too far from that path, going a week (or a few weeks) without tracking should not derail your weight loss.

    Beer craving

    Different plans have different timelines around when to start consuming alcohol again. What does your plan say? Remember it’s always best to follow your plan. Why the craving? Is it really beer you’re craving or something else (food)? Do you really need it or are you looking for something to comfort you? Swapping one addiction/craving for another is a concern after weight loss surgery. You can’t satisfy your food craving so you look for something else and alcohol is often what people turn too. Will one beer satisfy your craving or will you want another one tomorrow? Will that beer be worth the calories & the carbs? You’re not 4 weeks out & are still healing. It’s why you’re still on a staged return to eating a broader diet of solid food. Beer is very acidic & will upset & irritate your healing tummy. These are just some things to consider before making your decision. All the best.

    Fatigue

    We all heal & recover in our own time. Some will say I was fine after a week or two others will say a month. Me, I was a couple of months but I always seem to take longer to recover from everything even a cold. Plus it was complicated by my tendency for occasional drops in blood pressure becoming low BP all day every day. Even my head became doughy & my concentration was poor. Don’t give yourself a deadline. Take your recovery at your pace & listen to your body. Keep working at meeting your fluid & protein goals. But you won’t feel like you did before - you’ll feel so much better because of your weight loss & improving general health. Won’t it be great.

    New here, have some questions...

    That's almost four months from surgery, isn't it? Your weight loss stats are very similar to mine. I lost 25lbs before surgery and 27lbs since. My first advice would be to take a week and track absolutely everything you eat. Go back to basics - protein first, then veg, then good complex carbs if you have room. No drinking fluids for at least half an hour after eating. Clear the house of junk - you sound like you know that's what's holding you back and causing the dumping. Sticking to the program works (well it has for me so far!) I hope you smash that stall in no time. 💪

    Tips to break a stall...

    @AnotherGuy, great post! Stalls are super frustrating.. About losing muscle. One of my surgeon's goals is to avoid/reduce muscle loss. He says that if you are losing muscle, you need to up the protein intake, to have a 'positive Nitrogen balance'. The basic idea is if you don't get enough protein, the body breaks muscle mass. Every month he tests my body composition using an InBody scale (same one found in gyms), One month post-op I was losing weight, and he bumped my daily protein from 100 to 120.. one month later I didn't lose muscle mass (according to him ), and he bumped up my daily goal to 135g/day. This is my report from 3-4 weeks ago.

    Congrats on the weight loss 👏🏼 My program sounds quite similar to yours - As in we can have almost anything we can tolerate including rice, pasta, bread etc. I just don't eat them much right now. May incorporate them later on. We just don't have much focus on calories. Focus is more on serving sizes and protein/fluid intake. Don't have any numbers for carbs or fat intake either. Only thing is how did you manage to eat 1200 calories post week 4? I am almost week 9 but I still can't manage to eat more than 750-850 calorie range. Either that or I need to figure out how to incorporate foods high in calories 😂 Only calorie rich food group in my diet would be cheeses I suppose. But I also don't wanna overshoot fat intake. How was your fat intake first few months?

    September Surgery Buddies!!

    Amy....my surgery was the day before yours and I have experienced the same thing in the past month or so. This past week however things have gotten moving again. I have lost 4 pounds in the past week. I actually INCREASED my calorie intake and INCREASED my walking. I have been focusing on drinking more as well. I started out at 293 and am today 208, about the same loss as you. It is also important to make sure you are counting EVERYTHING. It is too easy to leave out cheese, dressing, condiments, oil or margarine used in cooking etc. Your true calorie intake may be bigger than you know.

    Thank you for the well wishes! Here is my update for 1/27/2022 I was able to sleep in my own bed last night! I had been sleeping in a recliner so I wasn’t getting the best sleep due to the larger incision. I just weighed my self as well… currently I’m weighing my self every other day just to stay motivated I guess. I am now 251.6 for a total loss since process began being 19.3 pounds! I’m starting to get a little worried tho- I swear I woke up hungry today. I’m really hoping it’s just my stomach gurgling and me mentally thinking it’s hunger. I can’t wait until I can move forward to a full liquid diet tho. Forcing my self to drink protein water is getting really hard. It’s super sweet even watered down. I’m still having pain from the larger incision site. Ice packs and rest help a lot. But I’m moving around a lot better already so that’s what really matters to me. I’m hoping my sleep quality improves. I’m getting roughly 4-5 hours a night. Something I’m seeing as a common trend.
