This liquid diet is killing me

Hi. I’m on day two of my pre-op diet. I care for two three year olds and feeding them and having the energy to play all day has been a challenge. But I’m devoted to the cause and so far, no cheating. This is really hard!!! I’m only allowed broth (no soups), SF jello, SF popsicles, 3 protein shakes a day and one low fat yogurt a day... for two weeks. Does that seem more restrictive than most? My clinic assigns this same diet to everyone, regardless of weight or size of liver. my question is when I will get to eat real food again? How long after surgery until I can eat a few pieces of sushi, a few bites of sandwich, or a breakfast sausage? When will life feel normal again and I won’t have to constantly explain my shake when others are eating lunch?
  3. I’m a month out tomorrow and I’ve lost 51lbs. I’m on stage purée but I can’t bring myself to eat any of it. I tried drinkable yogurt but it makes my stomach all gassy and gurgle-I’m afraid I’m lactose intolerant now. Same thing happens with SF popsicles and SF jello. I thought those things were supposed to be a given 🤷🏼‍♀️ Can anyone inspire me with something to enjoy eating err drinking? I bought a fancy mixer just to be able to have things but I’m not about to blend tuna like my binder says 🤢 Help!
  4. I was banded on 1/25 and am down 25 since that day. I seem to lose about 1.2 a week and though I'd love to drop 10 a month, I'm satisfied with 1/week. I admit, I havent' started exercising yet. I was filled to 5cc in a standard band the day of surgery and never felt any restrictions or fullness. I had 1cc put in 2 days ago and though I have no problem with my salad/fish/yogurt/veggies, I do feel some restrictions. I have figured out that water is so key in this battle. I try to remind myself that it took years to put on and so a year to get off the 88 pounds is very reasonable. 1 day at a time, 1 bite at a time, trying to remember..it's only food. I am in control, not it!
  5. Many good comments have been made on this thread. So true, the new stomach lets you know right away what is good or bad for your situation. My head tells me one thing and my stomach can tell me a totally different thing. I learned real quick that anything too sweet or too greasy is very hard for my new stomach to tolerate. Also if I overeat I have to stop eating right away or it really feels uncomfortable and I feel like I am going to vomit. I try to get in 3 meals and I have some snacks. I try to eat healthier snacks such as Nuts, Sun Chips, frozen lowfat Yogurt ect... If I have too much to eat at a meal, I save part of it and wait until the feeling of being too full goes away then I eat the rest when I feel better. I can only eat about 1 1/2 oz. then I start feeling uncomfortable, stop eating and in about 15-30 minutes I can finish another 1 1/2 oz. or so for a total of about 3 oz. for one meal. For an example, the diet menu Fresco Ranchero chicken soft taco at Taco Bell is one of my favorite and I can only eat half of it and then I can eat the rest of it in 15-30 minutes. That is a big change from my usual 3-5 tacos before the surgery. The surgery sure took away my stomach hunger. I eat now because I know that I need to eat or I am trying to get more protein. Before surgery I felt hungry most of each day. I wanted to eat and wanted to really eat alot of what tasted real good. But now that I have had the sleeve everything is so different. I do still have my moments, but they are less than before and I am learning more and more everyday. I wish you all the best. It all does get easier as time goes by, especially when you can eat regular foods instead of the milkshakes and liquids.

    "trial liquid diet"

Cut out the rice and corn now. They are both serious sugars and are adding to your hunger rather than curbing it. Cooked carrots are also not your friend. My pre-op diet was entirely food as the shakes came back up faster than they went down. If you want pre-op friendly foods, the list is: Yes boiled/baked chicken or fish (no teriyaki or marinade) avocado -it has good fats & oils all the veggies you can eat raw or cooked fat-free yogurt -plain or coffee nuts in moderation occasional egg or two but not fried tofu coffee/tea/crystal light etc. spices milk light cottage cheese No sugars -white, cane, brown or honey, it doesn't matter fruit -it's all sugar even if it's "natural" Pasta bread rice potatoes or root vegetables cooked carrots cheese fats -including butter, chicken skin, cream Soups noodles fruit bottom yogurt tomato sauce, ketchup, marinades juice
  7. First time buying this. Anyone else trying or tried it? It appears to be same amount of carbs and Protein as regular yogurt... So it seems harmless

Can we talk about food aversion

It can totally happen. Either you embrace it and eat what you can while making sure your nutrition is on point or keep trying new things. It nearly happened to me early on but my NUT put me on a rotation diet plan, thank the Creator. I've tried almost everything I plan to eat now but I still favor some pretty basic things * cough, yogurt * and I'm ok with that path. It works for me.
  9. I thought your name sounded familiar and I think I seen you on you-tube I am going to check after this cause I'm pretty sure I have saved your video, I have alot of them, they have such great ideas and information. That ricotta/mozarella cheese bake sounds real good and I am going to keep that one in mind. I did buy a couple of cans of refried beans, I never had them before but I know I'm not going to want to do alot of preparation of foods the first couple of weeks so the easiest is what I am going for. I also have a ton of greek yogurt now and I love them, only thing that after a few days I'm not going to want to look at them..LOL Are you doing anymore videos updates, I would love to see how you are doing!! Grateful as always..
  10. I know it's hard to resist counting calories, but honestly in the early days don't stress about it. I did my journals to track protein as usual. First couple of weeks I was probably around 600 a day. That's all I could manage. Mainly stuck to yogurts, protein shakes, and the early soft foods allowed on my plan. If you're info is accurate it looks like you're only about a week out from sugery? Seriously that's way to early to be stressing about the weight coming off. Getting healed up is priority #1. The weight will come off. Your body has been through a helluva a lot so be patient with it. You're also at a bit lower weight than a lot of others. It's just the nature of the beast. It always seems that weight comes off quicker in the beginning for those that weigh more. Focus on the basics right now. Don't think of your walks as exercise to lose weight. It's to get you up and moving and help the healing process. You got all the time in the world coming up to fine tune your diet and exercise program. I had complications after surgery which made for a very long 2 weeks after surgery. Don't push yourself too hard because it isn't worth risking any setbacks. In time you'll get your calories up, and you're right that you will need to. If they're too low your body will resist wanting to shed weight. I hit a stall for about a week or two in the early months and found that actually increasing my calories helped get the weight coming off again. That being said we're all different. Keep doing a food journal because that will give you something to go back and look at and help figure out what is and isn't working for you. In a few weeks you'll have a lot more options and you'll be feeling way better. The time right after surgery is tough physically as well as mentally. The mental part is what a lot of us weren't fully prepared for. Give it some time and it will all be good!

    June bypass buddies

I've done protein shakes with milk a couple times this week, but I haven't tried any dairy since the yogurt. I'll have to keep that in mind

    June bypass buddies

I've had some minor pain, nothing too unmanageable but I'm off pain meds now. I still get a little sore when I first start eating something. I started pureed food Monday. I've been able to do yogurt, canned chicken and refried Beans, that's about it. The Atkins Protein shakes aren't so bad either. I've been having a little trouble getting my Water in. I've been watching to clock and a half hr done eating starting to sip but I still feel like im not getting enough, so I feel like I need to try pushing that more. Has that been a problem for anyone else? I haven't got sick yet, I've also been nervous about that. I haven't felt it yet but I'm worried for if it comes. Emotionally it's been tough. I just went back to work wednesday, so being in a routine has helped a little but I've been pretty overwhelmed. And watching people eat things I can't have has been so hard. I don't even want anything unhealthy, I want to eat grilled chicken and some wild rice. I want to sit at the dinner table with people and feel like im actually eating more than babyfood. I know that will get easier once we can eat normal foods, but in the meantime it's been difficult.
  13. Cold cuts/thin slices cheese roll ups w/pickle or avocado in the middle. Grilled or cold. Celery w Peanut Butter or cream cheese. Cucumber w goat cheese or laughing cow cheese Beef or turkey jerkey No sugar added Greek yogurt (Damon light and fit, oikos triple zero, etc) Pre cooked frozen shrimp take and let thaw and use a touch of cocktail sauce Protein mug cake (search here for recipes) Berries w plain Greek yogurt Veggies w dip made w plain Greek yogurt mixed w hidden valley ranch powder/mix
  14. I use them in ricotta cheese, Greek yogurt, protein shakes , decaf coffee, and skinny cocktails.
  15. Great batch of turkey vegi soup. Tomatoes, onions, sriracha sauce, left over green Beans. Season with some other holiday favorites. Took entire turkey carcass and all the elements I used for stuffing the bird, put in Water overnight, strained it today. Added more left over turkey meat. But used some fage yogurt and made it creamy just before my first bowl. Highly recommended.
  16. Well, lessened learned here, that's why we post these things I made this: http://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a33955/orange-cranberry-relish-recipe-wdy1112/ It goes great with vanilla yogurt, I mean REALLY good
  17. The only thing I had complaints about this week (just sleeved Monday) is the hiccups. They hurt and quite frankly wish the gas would come out the other end. I believe it would be far less painful. I passed gas like the next morning after the surgery. I am eating my sugar free pudding, jello, and yogurts and hard to get all the water and protein in. Only my first day on solid liquids though so some tweeking will be in order for the rest of my menu for the next 3 weeks. Over all I am feeling great. I was so worried and it was for nothing. No pain at all. Good luck everyone.
  18. I was banded the same day and have been really freakin hungry for 2 days now. In fact I've been posting about this miserable post op diet and how there's no way I can adhere for another week. Everything else seems to be settling out so I cheated a little tonite and had 3oz of low fat yogurt and a little diluted fruit juice and it made all the difference. I feel so much better! Not recommending you cheat but I'm having the exact same experience. My doc's diet has me on way less than 100 calories per day and zero Protein. I've lost 8 pounds in 3 days and 27lbs in about 3 weeks. That seems extreme to me.

Eating Post Op after Gastric Bypass

I ate loads of SF popsicles mainly to keep myself hydrated, broth, and my protein drinks. I could also eat 1/2 of a yoplait light or 2 table spoons of no sugar added apple sauce but I would only do those two as my breakfast so I could sprinkle my prilosec & biotin onto them. Jello hurt to eat until week 3. i also didnt start drinking milk until week 3. Basically I stuck to broth water popsicles yogurt and applesauce for 2.5 weeks. It got boring so fast! I was so happy when I could start eating food with flavor & texture!

    Pre op Diet

I started a restricted diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. The day before surgery is liquid only. A day on the restricted diet looks something like this: Breakfast - Carnation Instant Breakfast shake, no sugar added, medium piece of fruit; AM Snack - 1/4 cup 1% milk, 1/2 cup veggies; Lunch - 1/4 cottage cheese, 1/4 cup veggies; PM snack - medium size piece of fruit; Dinner - Another Carnation shake, 1/4 cup veggies; Bedtime snack - Plain Greek yogurt. There are a few variations I can work with, but this is pretty much it.

    Protien Shakes

Well, I am a self-proclaimed Protein "snob" Many of the brands and flavors suggested by others often did not work for me. I have decided it is a personal preference. The ONLY one I can tolerate is UNflavored unjury. I add it to the Dole Shakers and Yogurt each day. One scoop is about 21 grams of protein. My lap band doctor carries this brand in his office; so, I don't have to pay for shipping. Good luck on your journey.

3 Weeks Out. What Were U Eating?

I'm 3.5 weeks out and just experimenting with soft food. Yogurt is good and oatmeal. Also tried mashed and sweat potatoe. For me it's the portion. 1/4-1/3 c. That's it. My mind says more because it miss the taste.
  23. Jay..you sound like you are being too hard on yourself. Fruit, yogurt, nuts.. sounds like wholesome food maybe the gallbladder has been holding you back. I'm actually curious whether high, moderate, or low fat is beneficial for the gallbladder. So many people that lose weight have problems, but I wonder whether it's the low fat diets that people frequently use that create problems, or whether dietary fat intake has no bearing and that it is some other mechanism at work...

    June 16th!

First day of full liquids. Had some Muscle Milk this morning and for "dinner" I had a 1/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 a sugar free jello cup added in. Nice to mix in the jello since you can't have the chunky fruit in it yet. MUCH more filling than just the clear liquids although the week flew by with all the hospital stays. Not hard to avoid other foods when everything available to you is on a tray labeled "clear liquids".

    It has been one week....

4 days out of surgery now: i have had a terrible time with nausea. i dont feel like putting anything in my mouth.....(i really want some crackers or toast, but cant) i have now tried some Isopure Protein. tastes like crap today i have only had 2.5 oz, some apple/water, and some strained tortilla Soup. i think it might be too spicy though. i now have discovered the surprise of thinking i am passing gas, but oh no........i had an accident..... i called the nurse she told me to take immodium chewable or liquid. i finally broke my low-grade fever this morning. i dont mean to be negative, but i feel so helpless for my body right now. i just want to have some yogurt, or sf pudding, or something with some substance. sorry guys, i guess this to will pass, but i am about to cry from the cramping, headaches, nausea. sincerely, debbie
