  1. They're gonna need to do a stomach transplant. (OK I'm kidding) But in all seriousness are you post op? And it's yogurt still so I don't see what the huge deal is. Unless there's like huge massive chunks of coconut and you're like day 1 postop. In which case you'd likely feel pain by now
  2. I accidentally ate coconut yogurt instead of vanilla, am I going to be ok?
  3. I know I can't eat it...and I didn't. I really just kinda mashed it with my finger and tasted the juice on my finger. Tiny taste of juice...nothing solid. God, I'm hungry. First three days after surgery, just non-caloric clear liquids. Past two days I've added 4oz of Protien shakes every other hour.....and I'm getting seriously hungry. Tuesday, at my one week check in, I'll get the green light on adding 4oz of strained Soup, or watery cream of wheat or oatmeal, or yogurt, or pudding. So...that really should help. I was losing weight reliably on 1500-1800 calories a day. (lost 30 pounds in 6 months and never ate under 1500) Presurgical diet was around 800 calories a day and lasted two weeks....then three days of zero calories...then two days of about 400 calories. My brain feels like it's full of cotton. I forget everything and I'm just kinda...nutty. My energy is pretty good. I'm getting 10,000 steps a day without trying (I walk a little every half hour as directed...it adds up!). But I feel like I'm starving. I know I have to protect the new sleeve, and go by the book....and I am. I am not cheating. I want to. God, I want to. But I'm not. The stuff I'm craving isn't naughty...it's my old diet stuff. I'd kill for avacado toast on whole wheat with some low fat baby swiss and canadian bacon. Half a slice, and a cut up tomato. I'd kill for all my diet food recipes that I've learned to love and miss dreadfully. I'd kill for a bite of an egg mcmuffin, or a steak salad, or some Thai stir fry. The Protein Shakes are making me twitch. The Mio has grown boring. chicken broth tastes like a chicken's sweaty armpit and I can't stand it anymore. Jello is my nemesis. Not today, Satan, not today.....

    One week Post-op!

You will feel like like you are eating constantly for the first few weeks, it gets easier. My ability to drink more at a time increased quickly. But yeah, it’s a chore at first. I ate a lot of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, refried beans or pea soup and usually 1 protein shake a day. I couldn’t do puréed meat so I depended a lot on dairy during that time. I bought a little insulated lunch bag w an ice pack so I could take food with me if I was going to be out of the house for more than an hr or 2. I also recommend Cooking eggs in the microwave as opposed to on the stove, they come out much softer and more moist than the stove top. Good luck!
  5. 12/8/17 (three years out) breakfast (2) dannon light n fit yogurt (2) Jimmy dean turkey breakfast sausage links snack (1) al fresco sweet apple chicken sausage Lunch (3.4oz) canned chicken (3oz) dole bag salad (2oz) avocado Snack quest BBQ protein chips (2oz) mozzarella cheese (3oz) salsa Dinner (4oz) Smoked salmon (3.5oz) steamed french green beans (.5 oz) sliced almonds 577 calorie burn workout - Snack after workout: (1.2 oz) PB2 (1 teaspoon) Hershey's sugar free chocolate chip minis
  6. Hey, hope4momof4, great idea with this thread, really cool way to keep us all getting positive messages each week. I'm now just over 2 weeks after procedure and down 14 pounds. I'm still primarily doing a liquid diet with protein drinks and soups. Have added yogurt and tried some small portions of chicken and fish (both ±2 ounces). Lots of chewing, so far so good, no reactions from my new stomach. Average 600-800 calories a day. Lots of water. I'm down one size in pants and that feels so much better, moved all my "larger" pants out to the garage and will be donating them to charity. I'm not going back. I just don't get hungry like I used to, sounds difficult to believe, but I have zero urge to munch at the end of the day before/after "dinner". This used to be the worst hours of the day for me, mentally I look back and think it was more like grazing (emotional not physical eating). I'm going to try going back to the gym next week and building up my cardio and strength, will let you know how that goes. Have a great weekend!

    Is there something wrong?

I'm 8 days out. After day 4 or so I could drink quite a bit of water or broth in one sitting. The same isn't true for the thicker foods my plan allows (yogurt, cottage cheese, scrabbled eggs) so I've been doing those for meals instead of broth. For broth I've been going to Whole Foods and getting the broth from their market soups, and giving them a once over with an immersion blender just incase there's anything chunky hiding in there. So much more satisfying than plain broth.

    Surgery on 12/28

Protein jello, sugar free popscicles, sugar free pudding, and soup. Ask your nut if you're allowed some soft protein rich foods like yogurt or string cheese.
  9. I was the first surgery on Tuesday with my group, so with an arrival time of 5:30, I was up at 4am. Got there and it all went very smoothly. They wanted a little last minute blood, they wanted a pregnancy pee test, then on to pre-surgery where I got a couple of shots and an IV catheter in my forearm. Everyone wants to know your name and birthdate...lol. Had already taken the Emend pill for anti-nausea. Was given an antinausea patch behind my ear, and a motion sickness med. Also, a med for preventing blood clots. Surgery went well. Woke up and learned that I'd had a small hiatal hernia that my doc tightened up to help prevent acid reflux. Surgery was 7:30-9:30. I spent 9:30-12:30 in recovery. Was ready to leave at around 11, but there was a little delay getting my room ready. Got a few ice chips in recovery. Around 12:30, I was wheeled up to my room. The pain from the surgical sites wasn't bad. The trapped gas, particularly in my shoulders, hurt like the dickens, though. Miserable feeling, but tolerable. As soon as I got to my room, I asked to go to the bathroom. Got up without any problem, took myself to the toilet. (nurse did stand outside the door at first). Got out and said that standing upright made my gas pain feel much better, so asked if I could walk. Nurses seemed very enthusiastic about my willingness to walk and took me for a walk. I did a couple laps of the ward and wanted to sit down again. So, then, I was given a little one ounce cup of Water to drink slow. Got some pain meds, some more anti nausea meds, some meds to encourage my guts to keep moving. I drank my little one ounce cup without any issues for a couple hours in a row and they advanced me to drinking FOUR little one ounce cups per hour, and sucking on this plastic breathing thing ten times an hour. After a bit, they helped me put an order in to food service for some broth, Jello, and other Clear Liquids. But here's the routine I had to follow (and am still following today) 10 sucks on the breathing thingy per hour, One or two small walks per hour. Four ounces of clear liquid per hour....drinking one ounce every 15 minutes in 10 little sips. Yesterday at 6pm, they sent me home, and I've been doing the same schedule. Tomorrow, I'll alternate hours, and do 4 ounces of Protein Drink, then four ounces of clear fluid...alternating like this for at least 10 hours of the day. The goal is at least 40 ounces of Fluid per day. I'll remain on Protein drink and clear fluids until my recheck a week from surgery. At that point, if all is well, I get cream of wheat, yogurt, pudding, and oat meal back in the rotation. The toughest thing for me has been getting comfortable in bed. I'm a side sleeper and it's kinda painful...but wedging enough pillows around me helps. Also, I have a little narcotic medication in liquid form for home, that so far, I have only had to take at night. Am feeling pretty good today! Still pooped, but getting my walks in. One funny thing....they loaded me up so much with IV fluids that I actually gained about four pounds while away having surgery! All those swollen tissues must be holding a lot of water. I was told this is very common and not to worry about it. Could also be a function of them taking me off my diuretic for a while until fluids get easier to swallow in bigger volumes. Anyway...I'm doing great and wanted everyone to know the sleeve isn't that bad. The hardest part for me is all the meticulous measuring and making sure all my little recovery jobs are getting done. Walk, sip, suck. Rinse, repeat. Good luck to everyone on a safe and effective outcome!

    lunch ideas..

Honestly? I'm doing this pre-op and anticipate this will continue the rest of my life. I pick my most important meal of the day (happens to be dinner for me), and that's the meal that I will put a little effort into. (Like 10-15 minutes of effort. ) That means, the other 2 meals, 3 snacks are pretty repetitious, crazy easy, and boring--designed only to fill my piehole with protein and veg/fruit. If I get tired of a meal, I'll take it out of rotation and put something up in its place. If it were me, and I was a truck drivin' man (thank you Toby Keith), I'd do the following during the week cuz I could make and package stuff ahead: Breakfasts--I'd rotate 3-4 of them: 1. Egg "muffins (portable, soft, easy to digest, dense protein). You can make these any flavor you want. They're essentially just crustless quiches (and real men DO eat quiche) !!! 2. Breakfast taco made with low carb tortilla. 3. Mixture of cottage cheese, yogurt, blueberries, Fiber One, toasted slivered almonds. 4. Green protein smoothie (frozen blueberries, frozen spinach, scoop of banana protein powder, peanut butter powder, unsweetened vanilla coconut milk or Fairlife Milk for more protein) Lunches--I'd rotate 3-4 of them: 1. Turkey or ham roll-up(s) + grape tomatoes (1 oz Boar's Head lunch meat + 1 string cheese = 1 roll-up)--eat 1-2 + 3-4 grape tomatoes 2. Little containers of leftovers from previous dinners that are pre-measured. Stop to pee at a truck stop, nuke 'em and enjoy with a spoon and a smile. Works great for things like chili, Eggface's Ricotta Bake, layered enchilada casseroles, etc. 3. Lettuce wraps (lunchmeat, sliced cheese, romaine leaves/curly lettuce leaves, cucumber spears, onion slices, etc) 4. Little containers of a meat/seafood/egg salad (tuna or canned salmon or shrimp, mixed with boiled egg, cottage cheese, green onions, dill pickle relish, low fat mayo, Dijon mustard, spices) + sliced apple or jicama or carrots. 5. Smorgasbord: 2oz leftover meat, 1oz cubed cheese, 3-4grape tomatoes or 2-3 strawberries or 1/4 c blueberries or blackberries. Snacks--KISS (Keep It Simple Sweetie) 1. Hard boiled egg 2. String cheese and beef/venison jerky 3. 1oz nuts 4. sliced apple/peanut butter or almond butter 5. My favorite trifecta satisfies me for 3-4 hours: 1 string cheese, 1.75oz GS apple slices, 8-14g of toasted almonds. So dang yummy!!! Dinner--Make something lovely for yourself and make enough to freeze 2-3 meals of leftovers in small containers. Label with tape: I make lots of "base" meats and buy pre-made/low to no sugar/low cal/low fat sauces and freeze them in ways that I can measure out an ounce or 2 into a container. I portion sauces in ice cube trays or small freezer containers. Then it's so easy to grab things and mix and match like Garanimals for food! Never a dull meal! Name of dish Qty of the Dish Date frozen (if possible, then put the nutritional information on it)
  11. I had the same issue with anything that wasn’t bland. Couldn’t do vanilla shakes ore even my fruity vitamins mapped me gag. Fortunately I had unflavored protein powder and put it in a cup of milk with decaf coffee and that’s helped for a few days. Vanilla Greek yogurt tastes horrible but plain was tolerable. I’m one week out and can do choc shakes and vitamins are doable.
  12. Thanks for the tips. Once I’m off of clear liquids I will definitely be mixing with yogurt or SF pudding. Its so difficult right now as I can’t really drink a lot at one time. Can’t wait for this part to be over!

  14. Man, I had forgot about the crushed pills. One important note for anyone reading this thread that may not be aware - not all pills can be crushed. Some medications are coated to pass through the stomach and break down in the intestine. Do not blindly crush all pills! This is one of the reasons that you need to go over your medication list with your surgeon, to determine which pills you may crush. To the OP, I mixed mine with yogurt. Back then I ate the strong fruity flavored ones because they were the texture I was used to. (I only eat plain greek Fage now) Strong flavors allowed me to mask the bitterness of the meds. I am now back to normal with taking pills. I take 6 pills with a sip of anything. And 4 of those are rather large vitamins.

    Question for WLS veterans

There are two phases to weight loss surgery. These are the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and I slid into the maintenance phase at around 7 months. My weight dropped like a lead brick. Those who have sleeve surgery tend to lose weight at a slower pace and encounter many stalls along the way. They can achieve almost the same level of weight loss because the transition to the maintenance phase may take a couple years. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Without sufficient protein, your body will scavenge protein from other areas of your body, such as your muscles. Protein is extremely important after surgery as its job in the body is to build and maintain tissues including your body's major organs and skeletal muscles. Protein deficiency, when continued over a long period of time can cause a disease known as protein caloric malnutrition. Common symptoms are poor healing, fatigue, hair loss and muscle wasting. Immediate post op, protein promotes healing of the staple line and incisions. I am not an expert on sleeve surgery, so I am not a good source on their diet approach. In the weight loss phase, I was restricted from consuming fats and sugars because the part of my stomach that normally process this type of food was cut away. But when I reached maintenance, my intestines evolved to be able to accept this type of food again. After I reached maintenance I had a discussion with my nutritionist about meal composition. Her advise was meals should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs but always put protein first. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. I knew that fats are important because they help to control hunger. Also because I was diabetic prior to surgery, I restrict myself from sugars. So primarily, I followed my nutritionist guidelines but also incorporate the use of fats into my diet. I am 4 1/2 years post-op.

    December Sleevers??

I just started my 2 week liquid diet today.....so my surgery is the 20th. I am freaking out about making it for 2 weeks on nothing but protein drinks jello and yogurt. I am just trying to keep my mind off of it and ignore the clock. I wish i had a doctor with an easier pre op. I am not in this position because i have stellar self control! I am expecting a few really horrible days and then hopefully it will get easier!
  17. I have had a stall last 5 weeks, and finally today I saw my weight drop. So I'm still 1 pound away from reaching 100 lb weight loss, I think I can make it happen before Dec 11 which will mark 5 months post op. I know you didn't want to hear any advice, so if you want any, ask. I'm not sure i can help much, all I know is from my own example, and from what the doc recommends, to me. I figured its always best to listen to your body, without giving in too much, gotta be strict with it, and consequent. Maybe having a reward system might help? And the rewards cant be food related, lol. My family always has pizza on Fridays and I usually took one little slice, or two if they were really small 1/8's. So I stopped doing it. Also took out the desert options of small dark chocolate mint, and replaced it with some greek yogurt, if needed. And lastly stopped buying fish that was breaded, which I started a month ago. It seems to be so easy to fall off the wagon, what matters is that we can see the change in choices we made and come back to basics. Keeping myself accountable is one way I deal with my diet and I don't allow for any grazing. I started using a trick too. After my meals I wait 30 min or so to drink, and then I go to brush my teeth, and this way I don't want to mess them up till I am hungry enough for my next meal, and prevent grazing. Hope that gives you some ideas, also, keep in mind its the holidays, and normally people gain in this time a year a few pounds. I know we should be losing, but we are humans with weaknesses. I'm pretty sure after the holidays it will be easier to get back in former rhythms. I wish you all the best on your journey. Don't give up and focus on what you can change to make it better. Ask your doc to guide you personally. Btw, are you seeing your dietitian? They might help as well. I will see mine after holidays for 3-rd time since surgery. They usually request a menu sampler of what we ate 1-2 days before the appointment. Its vital to be honest and to talk all ups and downs over with them, they will only help when they know where the problem might be. Best of luck
  18. Oh my gosh it’s not just me! I’m dying here too. I’m 6 days post op. I need to start upping my food intake I don’t think I’m doing enough. I have like 1/3 a oikos triple zero yogurt in the morning usually and like 1/4c cream of chicken. One premier protein a day. And I just had to up my water intake cause I was getting dehydrated. But I keep reading all the people are eating more then that so I don’t know if I’m getting enough. But yogurt and the cream soup. It’s wayyyy better then broth. Feels like food 😂
  19. Hey all! I had my surgery November 15th. I started off at 254 before liquid pre op. To date I am 226. I am very happy I’m not dropping it too fast. I havent seen the 220’s in three years so I’m stoked. I tried to have a little smoked Gouda yesterday. No no no. My tummy did NOT like that. Nor does it like anything sweet. I am learning that I need to just stick to the plan. Lol. I am testing the waters I guess? And its just not happening. So my diet consists of cottage cheese, refried beans, yogurt, and protein shakes. I am not having any issues getting my water down. I am however very constipated. I mean BAD. Ive tried to add miralax to my water, but its almost like I can tell its there and its hard to drink it. Any suggestions? Anywho just wanted to update everyone. Hope I’m not the only one......
  20. Check whatever materials/lists you were given, as what's permitted varies from plan to plan. You should be able to have water, protein drinks, broth, creamy soups, yogurt (such as Oikos triple zero), sugar-free popsicles . . . I'll admit that I didn't much enjoy the liquid phase or the slushy stage, but once I could eat real food again, I became much, much happier. It really isn't that long, although while you are doing it, it seems like forever. But after the first month . . . you'll have many more options. Good luck!

    I've Fallen Off!!!

I too am so sorry about your sister. It breaks my heart. the friends here who are advising to only focus on protein are right. I’m not an expert. But I’m doing well, almost 5 months in. Main thing to think about besides protein is STOP ALL SUGAR, sweet drinks, bread, desserts, fake sugars. ive found that fat alone doesn’t stop my loss of fat ever. Full fat diary and meat don’t hurt me and taste fantastic. Healthy fats have a place with your protein. Don’t eat low fat anything. Eating a piece of juicy hamburger or a full fat unsweetened greek yogurt will keep you losing weight AND help you feel full and satisfied. All sweet carbs make you crave sugar and that’s is what you do not want. A week or two without sugar and you will lose the desire for it. No bread, no fruit, no sweets. 85% chocolate is ok. Potatoes and sweet potatoes even with butter are fine. I promise you, giving up all sweetness really works and after you kick the habit, it’s painless. good luck sweetie, you will lose the rest of your weight. And your sister will be proud.

Acid reflux/GERD - will this go away?

Take probiotics he helps they sell the liquid form in Health food stores and activate yogurt
  23. Sorry just saw this, I sometimes have pain where my incision is. I try so much to drink, I feel you have to wake up so flipping early just to get all my fluids in. Sometimes I manage and other days I am shy by 1 or 2 cups. I have days I am so hungry, but I get full quickly and other days I could barely look at food.I don't force myself to eat, but I make sure on those days I have my protein in drinks or plain yogurt. Pills are so hard to swallow.I put them in yogurt and it goes down easier that way. I wish you much success in your future weight loss! Sent from my Nexus 5 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Hello! So I'm on day 1 of my liquid preop diet. It's been rough but I'm getting through it.. My question was for any suggestions on non sweet protein ideas. I'm not allowed to have any solids and only 1 yogurt every other day. Broths are approved and that's mainly what I've been drinking but it lacks in protein. I hate the artificial sweetner taste of protein shakes including premier. I ordered some protein soups and unflavored protein powder from bariatric pal but it won't be here for 2 days. Any suggestions or tips are welcone!!
  25. I'm actually only supposed to have plain. I was recommended by another sleever Dannon Oikos Triple Zero. It only has 4g of sugar. I think it tastes horrible right now but I think everything sweet tastes bad right now. Even my plain greek yogurt has 6g of sugar and it was approved to eat. I used to love Chobani Simply 100 but I think they may have taken it off the market. I don't see it and isn't online either.
