    Introduction

Hi. I'm new to this site. It took me six months of diligence, but I finally got approval from my insurance company for my sleeve surgery. I had it on April 17th. I'm feeling remarkably well on Day 3 post surgery, much better than I had mentally prepared myself for (from past experience with C-section, tubal ligation, hysterectomy and two knee surgeries). At 7 am today (65 hours after surgery) I walked my dog around the block and had no set-backs from it. Later, I took a car ride (first real outing) to shop and came home very weary, but still ok!and, 3 days post surgery, I've already lost 10 lbs. That's what really impressed me! My motivation to have this procedure stems from my decimal history. Like most obese people, I am becoming diabetic, my joints hurt, and the GERDS is only getting worse. But, unlike most other obese people, my thyroid tanked about 27 years ago, which has made weight loss an even greater challenge. Add to that, I found out 5years ago that I have - not one, but TWO rare auto-immune diseases. Primary Biliary Cirrhosis ("PBC") and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). Another name for NASH is Fatty Liver Disease. My weight continued a gradual climb over the years, despite my efforts to change my eating patterns and selections. I felt cornered. This surgery was my only hope to delay - and maybe even eliminate the need for a liver transplant someday. And, if a by-product of this decision is that my sweet husband gains 'arm-candy,' then great! I selected the sleeve over the other procedures because the full bypass surgery makes it impossible to receive a transplanted liver in the future (nix that one), and the Lap-Band is too easy to reverse. I wanted this decision to be permanent and never look back. I work with three people who had the Lap-Band, and only one of them has been successful at it. The other two have gained back all their weight and more. I know several others who have been successful at Lap-Band, but I wanted a permanent life-change. I'm so glad I did it. Pain and nausea? You bet! Unbearable? Maybe once or twice for five minutes, but I kept telling myself, 'this is normal. This, too, shall pass. The outcome of all of this is that YOU get to live to see your 3 year old granddaughter grow up.' There is so much stigma with gastric weight loss surgery, that I've chosen to not share it with more than my husband and two very close friends. It's no ones business why I chose to do this. I see people who have been skinny all their lives say, "Oh, I see.... No wonder you've lost weight," implying the fat person failed and had to "cheat." My coworkers, siblings, and others were told I'm having a procedure done to 'prop-up' my liver, give it some relief, and hopefully delay a transplant - all of which is 100% true. Maybe someday, I'll feel better about sharing the whole story with everyone. I am into Day 4 post-surgery. I've lost 10 lbs. I'm on the right track.

    a word of advice

Flowers, she stated that she is still on the 2 week post-op liquid diet! She is not to have anything other than liquids! It sounds like you are further along than that. Especially if you've already gone for a fill (I'm sorry your first fill didn't work for you :tt1: ). I'm so glad you didn't eat the sandwich sooner although you felt you could have. It's so important to follow the surgeon's guidelines. This stage before the first fill is for healing ONLY! NOT losing weight. Once we've healed and start getting fills THEN we can start worrying about losing some of these pounds we're hauling around. Unfortunately, I'm continuing on my shake diet for the 2 weeks after surgery (had to do them for 10 days before surgery). Although being only just banded on Monday, the shakes are fine right now. Come next week, I might change my mind! Flowers, I hope your next fill is better for you. I've heard that it can sometimes take awhile for the fills to start working. Sometime 4 or 5 before restriction happens. Hang in there! Sassymama, thanks for the warning. Crackers seem so benign. I'm hoping you feel better soon. Take care. And no more crackers!!
  4. My surgery was today at 2:20pm. I have had a great experience so far! Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers! I hope my fellow friends sleeved today and recently sleeved are doing well also. :-) :-)
  5. I'm so excited, got my date today 11/23/10, it'll be right after I'm done with my graduate school trimester! I'm so excited! Any suggestions on what to do between now and then? I'm all ears! Lookin' forward to it! :cursing: Kevin

    Weight loss

I agree that a lot of this probably has to do with starting weight. It's like any other diet, the bigger you are the more you lose at first. Whenever I would start a diet at my heaviest I'd lose up to 10 lb the first 2 weeks, but when I was starting from a lower weight I'd lose less. On my usual calorie counting diets I consider 5lb/month to be a win so I'm just hopeful to beat that # after surgery.
  7. Focus on healthy lifetime habits. Whole foods you make yourself are best. Exercise daily. Lots of water. As soon as you can, get off the protein powders and bars and eat real food. I had surgery at BMI 30. I am 6 months out and over those months lost an average of 10 pounds per month. I am in the exact center of the healthy weight BMI now, have tons of energy, look great and am super pleased with my progress. Don't worry about speed of loss, focus on how you will live for the rest of your life.
  8. I am so glad that I am not the only one! I have a pretty high pain tolerance and this incision pain has kicked my ass. I had surgery 9/10. Have felt great from day 1 except for this knife stabbing pain in my "big incision". When I move certain ways, boy, takes my breath away. It won't let loose until I get in a completely different position which takes a minute or 2. It's getting old in my opinion. I am thinking about getting the abdominal binder just so I can get back to work. Hoping all of your pain gets better soon, I am praying that we all will just wake up one morning and it will be gone.
  9. HI, I was banded 19 days ago and although I think I could eat anythng I try very hard to stick to the rules. The only thing is that I am very tired and fell kind of weak. Is this normal?
  10. I'm sorta finding myself in the same place. I had a dr. apt last week and I was hoping that I was going to get my first fill since I'm now finding that I get hungry. I was banded on 12/27/10. The dr. is proud of my progress so far and said that since I am still losing, he won't do the fill. So long as I'm losing 1 - 2 pounds per week..... he says I'm doing great! I just wish the process was a bit faster. He said that he will only do the fill when I've gone 3 weeks without losing any weight. I guess I understand his reasoning... but this is a little harder than I thought. I too am able to eat just about anything... and need some very strong will power to get through some days. But then................... I guess that's what this is all about.... learning new and healthy eating behavior. This is a life long journey.

This...meaning insurance approval with Cigna. I was Denied because I was shy a 40 BMI by 10 -12 pounds when I submitted everything they were looking for I jumped thru every hoop and paid out every last cent to docs. etc. but I should have know (and not listen to people on this site that said Cigna does cover with no co mobidities - NOT TRUE) they clearly state that they do not cover those under a 40 BMI unless you have grave illness that don't respond to meds.. Not only that but they will not approve any claim even related to this one in the future. Meaning if I gain 10 pounds in the next year.even if I maintain that for a year and..easy to do at my age...they won't even consider it. My fear is of dying of a heart attack like my twin sister did of obesity last year. My chest is so huge it strangles me at night and causes sleep apnea that doesn't appear on the "test" ...another few hundred bucks there. My warning to those seeking insurance approval with CIGNA....if you're not starting out with a 40 BMI save your money until you are or get a loan unless you can clearly prove a comobidity. Is this a normal request?

I am using Dr Kuri in TJ, and due to my high level BMI (53) he required a 2 week pre-op liver-shrinking diet (LSD). This is because the liver when fatty is very fragile and it bleeds a lot. The liver is pulled over to the side during this surgery and if it is fatty it can be damaged. The liver shrinking diet is 0-very low carb which forces your body into ketosis (fat burning!) and reduces the size and fat content of your liver. My LSD consists of Protein, protein and more protein and 0-40 (net) carbs. Mostly Protein Bars and Protein Drinks. I also have had some pure protein solids (i.e. lean meat and cheese). Many Docs in the States require a weight loss in the beginning to satisfy insurance requirements (which is usually a 10% reduction in weight) Good Luck on your upcoming surgery!

    Is my plan realistic?

5 and a half months and 48 lbs seems realistic. That is just over 2 lbs a week. I think most PS will do surgery on you when you are 10-20 lbs from goal. I'm 216 and my goal weight is 185. My goal for surgery is 200. That would put me 15 lbs from goal. Let me know what your surgeon thinks.
  15. This is my plan. Please tell me if it is totally unrealistic. I have around 48 or slightly less to my goal, which is 10 lbs. less than my doctor’s goal. I have lost a little over 1 lb/week. I was averaging a little more weight loss until the last month. I got out of the routine of logging my food. As a result, I have not lost as much as I could have this past month. I’m logging again now and working on making it a routine. I’ve started looking into PS and have been following many of your journeys. I am planning BL with TT or possibly a LBL. I was originally thinking I’d like to have it done in December. I’m now thinking I’d like to have PS in August (around mid month, which is 21 - 22 weeks away.) I have met with one PS who thinks it is realistic if I can get closer to goal. I meet with another this coming Tuesday. Obviously, PS in August would require me to plan and get serious about what I eat as well as to substantially increase my exercise. For those of you who have PS experience, is August too soon for PS with the amount of weight I still need to lose? Any insight is appreciated.

    Long term results

yes, ok, so its been approved since June 2001 in the U.S. unless you were part of clinical trials. Not every study started the same date the band would have been approved, so if a study takes a year as I said, and its a 5 year study, it makes sense what the nurse who wrote a book and leads the seminars for many Dallas lap band surgeons would say not all 5 year studies have been completed. The band has not been approved in the U.S. for 10 years, 7 years total plus 2 months. Thats why some insurances balk at paying for it. It hasnt been around long enough for really long term studies. I keep saying it has been around more than 5 years but hasnt been around 10 years yet, it hasnt. If you know someone who got theirs in the U.S. 10 years ago, thats unusal. That means they got it 3 years before it was actually approved by the FDA who isnt know for moving very fast on approvals. And the FDA is likely to get worse as there are some drugs approved without really long term studies that have come back to haunt them lately with bad side effects. The lady who gives these seminars had her band a few years and dropped 140 lbs and get really thin, and then she started to have a problem with reflux so bad the band had to be removed (just as a example of a side effect of having the band that can occur years later). Im glad I got my band, and Im sure you are too, but finding 10 year studies or results is difficult.

    Want Details!!!!!

I was sleeved on 11/15/10 by Dr. Schrapps @ Christus Bariatric Center in Beaumont, TX. My pre-op tests include psych eval, EKG, lab work and chest x-ray. That was it. Good luck to you.
  18. I would think that maybe a weight gain of 10 or more lbs could trigger a denial, but a persons body weight usually shifts by a few pounds up or down, and for a woman especially. maybe they just don't want to give the insurer any reason at all to deny coverage? Best of Luck to you!
  19. I've lost about 10 lb so far and I'm on day 5 of 21. I'm having trouble with diarrhea so far but was just informed that taking fiber capsules will help. I'm pretty sick of the shakes already but I don't get the variety of products as many of you do

    Surgery this Friday

You will be fine. Just look on this site for answers to your questions (always defer to your doc, of course). I made it through the first few weeks with by reading about others experiences. My surgery went like this: Go in 8:00 am, into surgery at 9:00, waking up 10:30 and out by 11:00. Very easy. Just take it easy untill your body tells you it is time to get moving. Follow doc's eating orders and smile, for you will be eating like a "normal" person soon. Good luck

    Starting over?

I was banded March 07. I've only lost 10 lbs. I feel like such a failure. I eat around my band and I always have that head hunger. I eat just to eat. It's so frustrating. I think my band is working, I just don't get full very quickly. I know if I have another fill I won't be able to eat anything. I'm really at a loss. How do I get back on track? I don't count calories or exercise. I'm having a hard time getting back into it. I don't know where to start. Does anyone go to Weight Watchers, would that help?? HELP!!!
  23. Hey all I still haven't gotten banded but here is the problem after my last post I changed docs and had to start over again. Never change docs if your in the kaiser program no matter how bad your doctor is. Well I am back on the trail and now kaiser wants to do the gastric bypass sleeve. Saying the lap band will only lose 10-20% of your weight. LIES!! I know for a fact that's not true I got a few friends who have been banded and lost 200lbs. The problem is my weight loss has slowed and now I am starting to have problems with health from being overweight. Thus causing a major problem. I am really thinking of saying screw it and go to Mexico. But I am scared if I do that kaiser will not honor what they did in Mexico. I also just found out I haven't met with my surgeon. The guy I was in contact with isn't even the surgeon he's just a N.P. Any help on getting kaiser to work would help or should I just go to Mexico and do it?

    What To Eat

Wow, you have lost 10 lbs per month! That's great! Here is a little reality check, people are more interested in themselves and seldom pay attention to what others are doing. And if they are paying attention and criticizing you, then kick um to the curb and move on because they are not a loving part of your life. You will lose more weight and have less loose skin to boot! It will happen, just give it time. Now it may be time you start eating adult food though. Like lean meats and lots of other Protein based foods. Try to avoid sugars and carbs for a while. You should be at a stage where you can eat regular food now. I eat a lot of chicken, fish, pork and beef. I will then eat a little bit of veggies if i have room. The baby food you have been eating may have too much sugar and is also processed. I try to stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Hope this helps.

    Inches not pounds?

I am in your boat! Our stats are similar! Pre-op:260 SW:244 Current weight:219 Surgery date 1/10/13. 3 months out. I was losing steadily and when I finally get in this groove of more workouts and a higher pace, nothing!! I can't break past 219. The scale goes between 219-222. Gimme a break!! But I send feel smaller and more fit. I just hope in a month I see a big difference. Today I are at Baja Fresh and ordered the skinny wahoo fish bowl (no rice sub more Beans though next time I think I will sun more veggies). It is 3 pieces of grilled mahi 2oz each and a bowl w cabbage, black beans and this really good mango salsa. It's so good. With out the rice it came to 459 calories and it lasted me three meals (lunch, snack and dinner). It's gonna be my new go-to if I have to eat out. Hope my body recognizes the effort I'm making!! Please keep me posted on your weight loss!!
