  1. Howdy y'all, I discovered this forum when I would Google questions I was feeling and this seemed like a great supportive community to participate in while I go on my adventure. I'm currently 2 days post-surgery (had my bariatric sleeve done on the 11th) and was wondering if you guys had any advice for a newbie like me? Something you had wished you had known before. My current set up is I have a timer for an hour to ensure I hydrate and at the second hour I go for a short walk in my apartment hallways to avoid blood clots, shake down any gas still in me, etc. Currently, think I'm out of the weeds with the gas pains (though my shoulders still feel a little crunchy when I massage it, if that makes sense lol) and now just suffering from the abdominal pain from the main incision but I have my pain reliever for that when needed. But I am struggling to walk as I'm just shuffling my feet and hurts to reach for stuff, anyone know a good timeline to expect this to be lessen? I appreciate any helpful advice and guidance y'all might bestow upon me.

    Please Help!! Newbie Onboard

hi! I'm new too, I'm rounding up for a December surgery. I do work for a insurance company, and the coverage ins and outs are pretty complex. I would leave it up to them, but here's another good idea to try. Call the insurance provider, get a customer service specialist, and ask them a few good questions. 1. What is the criteria for a obesity/bariatric surgery coverage? 2. Are there any exclusions listed for or about obesity surgery, bariatric surgery, gastric sleeve, lap band, or surgeries assosicated with weight loss? (tricky words but use each one as a individual question - TRUST ME) As they attempt to explain the criterias or exclusuions to you, write them down, and ask for further clarity on each one your unsure of. Once you've made this list, see if it applies to you, but make the facts list 1st. With that being said, the other option is to see if your plan offers this policy online, Cigna does, and it allowed me to know what the criteria was up front. Let me know if I can help clarify more; I've worked in the insurance industry for more than 8 years (if I dont know, I can find someone who does).
  3. I had VSG almost a year ago and had my gallbladder out just last week. I was told to go back to my normal bariatric diet after a couple days of "taking it easy"; so that means going back to high Protein 80+/low carb -100. With the exception of the first 2-3 days, I have had no issues with food and the subsequent bathroom issues. The only things you should be having issues with are fatty or greasy foods....which we shouldn't be eating anyway. I've gone back to all my spicy stuff including sriracha on everything and its all good. No problems at all. It is common go to have loose stool for up to a couple months after GB removal since you now have a direct bile line between the liver and intestines....so it constantly drips in and it takes the body some time to get accustomed to that. Luckily mine did it in a few days but as I said, some can take a couple months. Normal bariatric diet is all you need, its just your body may need a longer to adapt is all.
  4. If anyone asks how I lost all that weight, I tell them, "Clean living, diet, exercise.... and bariatric surgery." Usually gets a laugh – and most people are fascinated by it.
  5. Wow. I can't believe that any type of bariatric surgeon wouldn't be ensuring his patients were knowledge on the crucial basics. This could be dangerous. The kind folks here can get you on target.
  6. There are tons* tons of Protein drinks out there. Some are better than others. unjury is one of the top rated quality protein sources. I used them during my 2 week pre-op diet. They are good to add sugar free syrups & PB2 to for flavor. Post surgery I have been drinking Premier Protein chocolate.. 30 gr of protein in 160 Cal. RTD 11 oz drinks. It takes me about 1 hr to get the 11oz down. Again I add things to it. PB2 is a staple for me. It's a powdered Peanut Butter. Vitamins- you'll be on them forever I used Centrum vitamints And chewable Calcium chews with D3. (Chocolate) Both available at the pharmacy. I liked both of these. I'm trying Bariatric Advantage berry multi Vitamins.. Yuck Bariatric Advantage caramel calcium chews- not bad Good luck

Sucks to be a Newbie and be considered Offensive

Shersun, I like your I don't take anything personal unless it's a compliment. I have had to learn to get a little thick skinned here and put my tender little feelings aside, and it has helped me greatly here. I need Bariatric Pal in my life!
  8. Girlie girl My doctor is Peter Kwon of tri state bariatrics In ?Middletown NY
  9. I have esophageal dilation from my band causing achalasia symptoms. I was told RNY might be an option, but after removal was told the tissues at the lower esophagus are too damaged to tolerate further surgery. I would see an esophageal surgeon to consult on your options. They generally work closely with the bariatric department and can give you a better idea about further surgery. Good luck!
  10. Try bariatric advantage or celebrate. These are specific for bariatric patients.
  11. Im from NY also. May I ask which doctor you will use? Mydoctor is Peter Kwon. Tri state bariatrics. Middletown NY
  12. Hi- thanks for all the responses. As luck should have it, my local MTF is starting to do bariatric surgeries next month. I have already met w the surgeon. :0). He will be doing the sleeve hopefully next month. I am finished w all my preop stuff so it's just a waiting game at the moment. It won't seem real until I get a date though. :0)

    Tricare - Center of Excellence???

I am awaiting approval too with Tricare South.. Individual doctors are "Center of Excellence " surgeons. I have no idea what it means, but only five of the surgeons at Southwest Bariatrics in Austin are "Center of Excellennce". They have about 10 surgeons.

    Calcium question

My evening treat is two Bariatric Advantage Calcium chews. They are caramel -- delish! I take calcium and magnesium in the evenings because they help with sleep.

How did you pick your "starting weight"?

I did mine based on my bariatric evaluation visit. I started my classes shortly there after. It was about 3 months into the process.

    Vitamins!

I take Flintstones with iron. :-) they taste pretty good and are chewable. I'm scared to take gummies thinking they will get stuck. I do like the Bariatric Advantage calcium crystals and the iron. I hated the calcium chewables. They tasted like chalk.
  17. Dave, the gastric sleeve that you're talking about is the one where they actually remove part of the stomach and suture the rest of it into a tube-like structure, right? I just checked. My insurance company does cover that. And it looks like I won't have to put up much of a fight for it since I've already had two band surgeries. They will cover a different procedure if you've already tried a less invasive method and it didn't work for you. Now just to convince the hubby and find a doctor who'll do the procedure. I'm going to call my doctor's office on Monday to discuss this option, see if they're willing to do the procedure or whether they'll need to refer me to another surgeon. They don't list that as a procedure they do, but I know one of the surgeons has done them in the past. As far as finding another doctor, this surgeon is the best bariatric surgeon in the region as far as his skill in the O.R. There are nurses that come all the way from Columbia University Hospital, a two hour drive just so this guy can do their bypasses. It's his bedside manner that sucks. He does have a new surgeon in his practice that I like a lot. I know the newer patients opting for the band are not being treated with the same disrespect as I have been now that the new doctor is here. I wouldn't mind if the (insert foul word here) does the surgery as long as my post op care is with the other guy. Off on a road trip. Will be back tomorrow to read any further posts! Thanks so much!!

    Feeling really down...

Thanks everyone, it does seem like one thing after another and when I spoke to the bariatric coordinator and she wouldn't give me another date my heart sank. I ended up in tears the whole day. I am NOT giving up though. She said continue with my testing. Today I got my Upper GI and tomorrow is my pre surgery support group. As soon as I can handle the pain issue and see this specialist I am calling her for a new date. I appreciate all your replies, I really do!!! ((hugs))
  19. thanks for all of your input! I feel like I am always eating or drinking at all times until I go to bed. From eyeballing MFP. Here is my rough average input: 1000-1200 caloris/day 25-40 g fat 70-85g Protein 25-110g carbs 70-100 g water/fluid Seems like I'm high in fat and carbs but not sure what to do about it. Does anyone have a good resource for finding a bariatric NUT? I had surgery in MX so tough to find a dietician. I don't cook alot at all. I eat what my family eats and don't have much prep time with kids and a more than full time job.
  20. My program coordinator told me about Bariatric Advantage: VitaBand. I bought a bottle of 180 count "mixed berry" flavor... oh man, they are terrible. I'm about 1/3 through the bottle and not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! However, the Bariatric Advantage: Calcium Citrate Chewy Bites.. those are pretty darn good. I tried the caramel flavor, and it tastes almost like a starburst. I'm buying the lemon and chocolate flavors tonight. So yeah, any suggestions for somewhat tasty multivitamins?

Best way to lose weight after vsg

Follow the plan given to you by your surgeon or nutritionist/dietitian. If you didn’t get one, find a bariatric nutritionist/dietitian and get a plan. Post-op nutrition is tricky because you need to get in protein, vitamins, and minerals essential to life, but you can’t eat very much. The foods must be nutrient dense and are often very different from what you were eating pre-op. For me, 500cal a day was not enough post-op, I kept getting dizzy when I ate that little.

    What Do They Want? Gah!

I think you should lay this at the feet of your bariatric surgeon's insurance person. Most bariatric practices have a person (usually a lady) who is well versed in what it takes to get approved. They talk to insurance companies all the time as part of their job. After all, the doctor's success at getting patients is primarily up to this person. They need your insurance money more than they need you, so let them find out the criteria. Then, if they're worth their pay, they will do everything they can to get you cleared. Don't stress over this...it's just another hoop you have to jump through. Good luck.

    Long term supplementation

Ok, my head is spinning, but the main thing I have gotten out of this is I am back on track with Calcium. I am only taking 500 mg of calcium citrate but i am doing some of the chews AND my premier Protein has 50% of the RDA of calcium - I assume also calcium carbonate but I figure that combo is better then nothing. I am going to order some bariatric Vitamins because I have been doing the kiddo gummys, vit B complex sublingual drops and calcium/Vit D. I think I need to upgrade. Can I ask a huge favor - as someone who really is fairly clueless but always has good bloodwork but gets ill from most vitamins (ie sick to tummy feeling) what should I order? I need a good bariatric multi that won't make me hurl and a better way of getting more calcium citrate since the pills kill my appetite for like 6 hours. I am post menopause and have good Iron stores (even after plastic surgery blood loss!) so don't need iron. My main issue right now is my appetite is poor. I am feeling so excited to weigh 140, but these last 10# came off on their own not according to my plan... a little scary actually. I am okay getting down to 135 but absolutely do not want to get smaller so I need vitamins that don't kill my desire to eat even further.
  24. No, I didn't say that to her. I didn't talk about it actually. She asked how much I weighed and when I told her 147 she said it was too low. Go figure. She never approved of my having the surgery, but in her defense, she doesn't have much experience with bariatric patients. She's supportive, just concerned. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. My surgeon requires me to use Bariatric Advantage and I have to do 4-5 shakes per day. I have been having trouble getting the 4th shake down. Its tolerable. 2x per day I can mix it with a cup of skim milk which makes it taste a little bit better! Whatever you choose just make sure it has high protein and low carbs. Good luck!
