  1. Hello, post-op friends, who are further along their journey and from whom I hope to glean wisdom from..... here’s my story thus far. On Monday, December 16, I had RNY bypass surgery along with a hiatal hernia repair and removal of a small suspicious abdominal mass. 3 years ago, I had a large abdominal mass that turned out to be a borderline malignancy. My oncologist had been watching this new spot for a little over a year and when I told her that I was going for bariatric surgery, she said that she would come in at the same time and remove it. I woke up from surgery in relatively little pain, the deed being done and the procedures routine. My problems came the day after surgery, when I attempted to take in any liquids. Any liquid going down, would cause my new little pouch and digestive system to go into painful spasms. My surgeon decided to keep me hospitalized for an additional day to see if they could convince by body to tolerate liquids and keep me hydrated with IV fluids. Baclofan was administered to help with the spasms. Additionally, my blood sugar weirdly went up and I was administered 2 doses of insulin. Never before had blood sugar issues and no family history of diabetes. The first day after surgery, I finally tolerated 1 oz of broth, 1 oz of diluted juice, and 1 oz of Water. The second day after surgery, Wednesday, I was feeling much better, could sip without pain, and was cleared for discharge. That night, in my own bed, I slept an unheard of for me 10 hours. Sips of liquids went down with ease, though I could immediately tell if I sipped too much due to an uncomfortable pressure. It seems that herbal mint tea is agreeing well. I also had sugar free Jello, broth, and some clear Protein Drink. I have had 4 previous abdominal surgeries, 1 open, 3 laparoscopic and this is, by far, the least painful. I have not needed any of the prescribed narcotic pain relievers sent home with me. Had to go back to the hospital yesterday for a blood test. There is history of DVT blood clots, so I have to be on injectable blood thinners for 3 weeks. The blood test was to check the therapeutic level of the medicine. So, I don't have to return to work until January 6, so I’m going to enjoy my staycation and holidays.

    December Surgery dates???

  3. Your dietitian is not specialised in bariatric it seems... I'm 2 months out and still around 4-500 cal a day...
  4. I remember this from working in an office one year while I was on Weight Watchers, but I rallied through and took a few bites of a few select things and counted my points. Now, since bariatric surgery, I am retired, so it's more about me not bringing it into the house. When I meet my friends out for lunch and when I just went to our annual girls' Christmas party, I selected only the protein items and avoided the sweets and carbs. I just went into it knowing that I HAD to make good choices.
  5. And conversely, I was allowed showers without restriction after 48 hrs, with my drain in, and no compression gear. Seems like plastic surgeons have as many different protocols as bariatric surgeons do

    January 2020 Surgery Date

I buy something to prep myself every time I go to the store. I’ve been sampling protein shakes and buying ones I like (I know taste may change after surgery). I have been getting bone broth packets and have been ordering vitamins from ProCare as recommended by my dietician. I’m to start taking bariatric vitamins 2 weeks before surgery and stop them 2 days before to start prepping bowels. I have smaller tools to help myself post-op and plan to prep things in small containers. I am also buying liquids to drink such as water and Powerade zero and drink mixes. Amazon has a great deal on unsweetened applesauce packets (like for kids) and I’ve purchased a large pack of those also. I’ve also been writing in a journal all the things that come across my mind that I need before surgery, at the hospital, as well as after surgery!

    Hungry after Surgery

It must be frustrating especially if your program touted no hunger post surgery. It's true that everyone is different and some do have hunger again right away. The good news is you still have a much smaller stomach so as long as you don't "push your sleeve" one extra bite at a time you'll still lose weight - assuming you're following a good eating program. Have you watched any of Dr. V's YouTube videos? Look under "Duc C. Vuong" - he's a bariatric surgeon from New Mexico who posts a huge amount of extremely helpful content. One of his videos talks about this. Good luck and I wish you the best in your journey.

  9. Claire, I blame shows like My 600LB Life and Fat Doctor for these expectations. The average weight loss is 2-4lbs per WEEK. So you losing 11lbs per week is OUTSTANDING and something to shout about, not to be depressed about. ((hugs)) But I will tell you, that as you rapidly lose weight, the fat will give off some serious hormones that will lead you into and out of cyclical isolated spots of depression. But the important thing to know is that they usually pass. If you see your's are not passing, please contact your surgeon and RD and ask for vitamin testing and also for a referral to a bariatric counselor? I felt alternately joyful, depressed, angry, super energized, optimistic--the whole gamut of emotions. LOL. Then my fat liberated and the hormone storms dissipated. And I only lost something like 12-14lbs the first month? I'm now at goal #3. I'm 131.4 today.

    2 Weeks Post-Op - Depressed, Discouraged

When I shared with the OB team about my journey to wls and etc., they looked totally confused. I'm finding out that lots of doctors have an inadequate understanding of Bariatric medicine. All doctors should have to go to training and learn how Bariatric medicine affects their patient's health and preexisting conditions.
  11. Hello, I wanted to see if there are any patients who have gone with Sacramento Bariatric Associates with Dr. Machado? Her program is very specific and not really like any other that I have seen. I would like some support or have another that I can share what I am going through. I had GB RNY done 10/24/19

Today is my 1 year Surgiversary!!!

I apologize to the original poster – I’m off topic. @AchieveGoals So, I just checked out ALL your activity on the site. Your comment on this post stuck me as odd. You said " until GERD kicks in" You posted ” So a little bit about me, I was lap banded when I was 17 years old, got it taken out when I was 22 because of pouch enlargement. Now I am thinking of getting sleeve done. But the GERD part scares me, it's like exchanging disease states for one to the other. It helps get rid of Diabetes, but you acquire GERD, so severe to the point that people need revisions to another sleeve or another bariatric procedure. I would be scared to get an RNY or a Bypass, I am happy getting a Sleeve (and this was a decision I thought a lot over to even get to it), so the thought of so many revisions due to GERD scares me to even get this done in the first place. It makes me wonder if I will be one of those who undergoes this too, I don't have current GERD right now, sometimes I do get heartburn maybe three times a month, but I'm not taking anything for it chronically. Anyone have any thoughts? Thank you so much! You are assuming everyone has Gerd on needs revision? Not everyone acquires GERD or needs revision after surgery. Know that many of us have no complications and are doing fine years out. (I’m five years out) Your surgeon would be the one to talk to about having heartburn three months at a time and considering sleeve.

    Vegetable Hater

I never liked raw veggies, & not a lot of cooked oned either. I add baby spinach to my smoothies. Spinach leaves, Almond milk, or yoghurt, sometimes a little frozen fruit. Sometimes some protein flavoring (from the Bariatric Pal Store). It's all good. You don't taste the spinach.
  14. I just found this thread today and wanted to resurrect it if possible to see if anyone has ever resolved this issue. I have reflux bad at night and wake every morning with acid irritating my throat. Yesterday I started losing my voice so naturally I thought I was getting sick. Only symptom I have is throat hurts like crazy. Today, I can't talk at all. Full laryngitis has set in. I have no other symptoms though so I dont think this a cold or sinus infection. I see my surgeon on Thursday for my 6 month post sleeve follow up, but I don't think hes going to offer much help because hes always a jerk (true). I already take protonix daily along with tums chewable as needed. I know most people resolve the reflux issue by conversion to bypass, but that's not an option for me as my insurance doesn't include bariatric coverage so I self paid. I don't have another $15 K for another surgery ☹

    Vegetable Hater

Hmmm well I liked veggies but they didn’t much care for me. I lost weight eating strict low carb and calories due to metabolic disorders and chronic illness but as i started adding veggies my weight crept up. eventually despite my efforts my weight skyrocketed and my gallbladder wasn’t functioning properly I sought out bariatric surgery. My BMI was 40.1 I ended up having gastric bypass surgery due to gastric reflux. You don’t worry about veggies for a while anyway. You follow a dietary plan. First is liquid proteins, always fluids and get protein first, then move to soft foods aka puree, then soft food with soft veggies, then in maintenance add complex carbs. (That’s according to my dietary guidelines) timeline is based on both the guidelines and your own progress. dont worry about veggies just yet. First is finding protein drinks you like, then soft protein foods, then veggies. And honestly there really are tasty ways to get veggies. They have so many tast veggie options now. I like Dr. praegers black bean chipotle pollock burgers I make them with BariatricPal protein mash potatoes. I like dr praeger veggie burger since it’s a blend of protein and veggies in a burger , they have one callled perfect burger. bariatric surgery in my opinion works best sticking to low carb and low sugar (my nutritionist says no more than 5 grams of sugar) and veggies come later it’s the protein that’s vital. Plus you base your daily protein on your weight. (0.8 grams of protein per 1 kg of body weight if I recall correctly) take the first step and take it from there. In my opinion As long as you stay low carb, little to no sugar, get your optimal protein, drink fluids, get fiber (soluble and insoluble) take Whole Foods based vitamins (I suggest garden of life gummy drops multi vitamins to start) and take probiotics. Veggies are just filler foods. But good protein and especially healthy fats are even more so filling.

    4 days post op

Six days post and I too had gas pain but used the gas x and feel fine! No pain a matter of fact took my last pain medication first day of surgery and hadn't taken any since, except for Sunday when I over exerted myself and took some OTC (Aleve) that was approved by my physican and have been fine since. So, please take it easy and relax! My bariatric friends had to express this to me!LOLOL Feel better soon!
  17. Congrats on hitting goal!!! I'm your height 5'4" and I live between 130-135lbs. Today after a really big weekend, I'm at 135.4lbs (the top of my window), so it's back to eating for WLM which is my usual M-Th routine anyway. So I feel like 135 will look good on you! Can't wait to hear what your bariatric team says. ((hugs)) How do YOU feel about your weight loss. Do you feel "on top" of things or do you feel shakey like you're "teetering" on the verge of something?

    Tortillas Anyone?

I've used Flat Out products a lot. They're a lower carb flatbread you can use as a wrap. some people on an other bariatric site I'm on use wraps that are made of cheese. I've seen them in the store but have never tried them.

    Feeling exhausted

WOW!! You took a trip early. One week after my surgery I went to the market, pushed an empty cart and was exhausted. I am impressed! Yes, your energy will be low; major surgery, and eating and drinking next to nothing. so, it took me six weeks to get up to the water levels I needed. So, try sipping and ounce of water every 5 minutes. Then when you have liquid protein, its still sip, sip, sip, and walk, and sleep. Down the line, think about getting an Instant Pot, a Vitamix Blender, and a air fryer. They really help with making multiple, healthy, fun bariatric meals. Keep up the great job your are doing. Don't push yourself, you need to heal.

    Alternate Day Fasting

I’ve never followed a diet but inadvertently do intermittent fasting, as well as alternate day fasting to some degree, some days just wind up much lower calories than usual especially with doctors appointments, errands or laundry. I might go from 6pm dinner to 12:00 lunch except for tea in the morning I like yogi slim life caramel apple spice with a bit of ripple milk. Every so often I switch things up. And might vary my calories a bit. I do stick to low carb even though post surgery I haven’t counted, for now it’s protein and calories. And track what I eat. Daily weight. And maybe a note for the day. Like if I’ve had a dr. Appointment. I have to manage things as best I can without the benefits of exercise. Which due to my chronic illness isn’t possible. Just basic things like a shower, laundry, dr. appointment, errand, is like a triathlon to my body. Sometimes just getting up in the morning is equivalent to a workout. i think adding things like IF can be beneficial to Better utilize the tool that is bariatric surgery. It helps solidify the reality that our bodies don’t need as much food as we think. also I have to say @FluffyChix always has awesome advice.

Hair is feeling very coarse ?

I was sleeved in Match 2018. I started losing hair at 6 months out and am still losing it. It is so bad that my scalp would sunburn over this past summer. My dietician said that hair loss is due to the very low calorie diet we are on i the beginning. I had to revise to a bypass 3 weeks ago and am nervous about having even more hair loss. Protein is very important but I have hit protein goals since first surgery. I have been taking a good biotin supplement from the start. This time I am using a shampoo that is said to stop the production of dht. I have my fingers crossed that it will at least help. I also get cold easier than I did pre op. I have heard the same from many bariatric surgery patients.

    Gastric bypass surgery and holidays

Ok I understand now. It’s extremely common for bariatric surgery patients to need cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) due to rapid weight loss. My gallbladder was problematic years prior so I ended up having it removed during my gastric bypass and it ended up being chronic inflammation. It sounds very possible they will suggest it’s your gallbladder. It definitely would cause the symptoms you describe. I was in hospital shortly after my surgery not more than two days after. And got stuck there several days. Try not to worry and roll with the punches and you will come out ok.

    Gastric bypass surgery and holidays

At a bariatric group meeting we discussed what was termed rescue foods. These are healthy foods that we keep with us whether in the car, a purse or backpack that are readily available for satisfy a hunger pang or craving. In your case since you crave sweets a good protein bar could be the answer. For me I portioned out 1/4 cup of nuts or shelled sunflower seeds and used them. I also use the Costco brand protein bars. The key is to not use the rescue food as an all day snack. If you start snacking then you will in all probability start regain weight. As for holiday gatherings, after WLS I tend to stay away from the food and concentrate more on talking with others. I'm also minding the kids while everyone else is eating. This way no one notices that I'm not eating since they are themselves occupied with eating.

    I can gulp

OK so I need the right doctor. And I need to lose weight but not necessarily in that order. Thanks Billy. Good to know. My bariatric surgeon recommended an ortho after I told him my story yesterday. I will call the one he recommended and ask some questions, perhaps there is hope. I was really put off by the one I saw who told me there was no hope of a hip replacement unless I lost all this weight. I had already decided, that I would not be seeing him again about my hip even if I did lose all the weight, I'll find a more caring Dr. The one I saw didn't seem to have an ounce of empathy for what it's like to be in pain with very step you take. Like somehow I would have been more worthy of not being in pain if I weren't overweight, as if in the case of a thin person who blew out their knee running or a football player who was injured playing. Thank you!
