  1. Love your story. Awesome ending. When did you start running? Was it soon after surgery, or after several pounds of weight loss? What motivated you?

    101 pounds gone FOREVER!

I had surgery on 3/25/13 but lost 30-25 pounds in the month before that. I've lost a total of 101 pounds as of this morning. I had my gall bladder taken out on Monday but other than that, I've had no problems/complications. I have really got to get some pictures linked in here to show some progress. My weight loss has really slowed down over the past month but seems like it has picked up since my gall bladder came out. Hopefully it will continue on down. I'd love to be below 200 by Christmas. I guess we will just have to wait and see how it goes!
  3. I think there are lots of men who like to keep their wives overweight for many different reasons. They want to keep them under their thumb, lower their self esteem and not have any other man look at them. I personally have always been a outspoken bitch! LOL Luckily enough my husband is proud of my weight loss and is always trying to get me to buy new clothes. I think when we are confident with ourselves we speak our minds and don't care what anyone thinks. Keep up the good work!

    11 weeks post op photo

That's awesome. I can see the smile and joy in your face with the new you as it's revealed! I think it's positive reinforcement to capture the before... And subsequent many many happy after pictures as we progress along our weight loss journey.
  5. Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! My name is Brenda and on September 2nd I had the gastric bypass surgery. It took me a few years to get myself to admit I needed this, and I am happy I made this decision. My surgery took longer than the surgeon anticipated due to scar tissue from a previous surgery. The surgeon was still able to do the surgery laparoscopic after cleaning up the scar tissue. After one setback due to diarrhea and dehydration I pray I am on the right path now. Discouraged at first because of an 8 lb weight gain(which the surgeon said was due to all the intravenous fluids I was given) I am happy to say in a week I've lost 10 lbs! Prayers for great success for all of you on this weight loss journey. Here's to a happier and healthier lifestyle ????????
  6. Take it as a compliment! And congratulations on the weight loss.

    Did you need blood?

There is VERY little blood loss with this type of surgery. The only bleeding at all comes from suturing over the staple line which some surgeons do as an additional guard against leaks. You can watch videos of the surgery online to see what I mean. There is hardly any blood loss at all from the punctures they use to insert the instruments.
  8. This won't answer all of your questions and I'm still pre-op myself but I have heard that after surgery (and really during any big weight loss phase) you will experience hormone dumping. Your fat stores hormones, and as your fat cells shrink as you lose weight, those hormones come out and can affect your mood and personality. I've also heard that a lot of people go through a grieving process immediately after surgery (and some people even feel like they regret their surgery) because they are still healing and get upset that people around them can just eat whatever food without thinking about it. So that's pretty normal. Once you really start seeing and feeling the weight loss effects of your surgery, you probably will get past this grieving/regret/anger stage. (But still talk to your doctor). One thing I would say though, in regard to your last comment about it being Thanksgiving and everyone but you eating yummy food, is that you need to keep in mind that you had this surgery, not your family and friends. You can't blame them for eating "normal." Your normal is different now. Hopefully your mood will even out soon, but try to let your wife know that you can't help your mood. I'm sure she will understand. And then make it up to her in a few weeks when you're feeling better. Happy wife happy life, as they say! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. Ever since I can remember I was fat. Childhood wasn't the easiest and going into my teens was a nightmare. I remember one of the girls in 8th grade asking me if I could fit through doors. When I got out of high school I didn't think to much of my weight. I would only do things that made me stay out of the spotlight. I got married and then divorced and in many other mentally abusive relationships. In my mind I thought I didn't deserve anything better because I was ashamed of myself. After my mother died in 2008 of congestive heart disease it made me realize that I could die of that. I began the weight loss journey for a few years.I would lose 20-30lbs,exercise,etc. If I didn't see movement on the scales it would discourage me and gained all the weight back and more. My highest weight was 380lbs. Last year I decided to look into gastric bypass surgery and see if my insurance could help me. I was sure I wanted to do this, always knew about it but never confident in myself to go through the process. October of 2015 I took the first step and had everything completed on my end. My surgery was last Tuesday January 12,2016. I do say the pain has sucked but I'm looking forward to this journey ahead of me. ☺

    Dating (ugh)

I'm not currently doing the online thing (have in the past with mixed results) but I have wondered about this too. How do you open that convo up about WLS? How do you make a total stranger understand the metamorphosis that is taking place? Im still just getting started with a long road ahead of me. Part of me would really like to find someone to walk with me through all this someone who could like me big or small, and another part of me would rather wait and seek out a partner after the weight loss process is done and its just about maintaining. I don't know what's right lol. I don't really have anything helpful to add to the original posters question, just that I'm rowing along in a similar boat and wish you the best. Good luck to all us singles!

    Recent Surgery

Alisa, congratulations, 10 lbs. is a great loss. My doctor told me at my 1 week check up not to worry about losing weight, but not to gain any, and 4 weeks later when I went back for my fill I was down another 11 lbs. I didn't get a fill because I had lost the amount of weight one is supposed to lose if the band is tight. I was only on a clear liquid for a week after my surgery. The second week I was on pureed foods, the third week was a soft food diet and I started back on solid food my 4th week. So far I have not been hungry. I get to have a shake for Breakfast, mid-morning snack, Protein and veggie or fruit for lunch and dinner, an afternoon and evening snack. I seem to be eating all the time, but just small portions.I got to start back to the gym this morning and am walking also. I feel great, and I am already off of 1 of my high blood pressure meds. Hang in there and keep us posted.

    Hitting my first plateau :(.

Plateaus are a normal part of weight loss and so are minor weight fluctuations. You have to remember, your body isn't a machine. It needs time to adjust to major changes and weight loss is one. It's not uncommon at all for plateaus to last weeks- sometimes even months. It's frustrating, I know I've been there, but it's all part of the process. If you keep doing what you're doing your weight loss will pick up again. As far as a fill, talk to your doctor to be sure. But typically speaking a plateau isn't reason to have a fill. The fills are to control and dim your hunger. If you feel your hunger isn't controlled as well then maybe you do need one. But if it's just because of the plateau? A fill won't help. Best wishes.

    Success rate with "low" BMI

I started with a BMI of just under 32. I am 153cm and my heighest weight ever was 74kg in Jan this year. I was 72.5 at start of preop diet and 70kg on surgery day 2 June. It is now 5 months later and I weigh 56.5kg. A total loss of 17.5kg. I am no longer obese, not even overweight. I still have approx another 4kg to go to my goal. the weight loss now is fairly slow - I can go for weeks without my scales moving at all but i am sure that this is because I am so close to goal. I would do this again in an instant. I have lost weight many times before and always regained it. However for the past 4 years I have struggled to even lose it.I know that I could not have achieved this without the band.

    Success rate with "low" BMI

I'm a low BMI'er -- the weight loss has been slow...VERY slow. At this point I can't say that I would do it all over again. You'll see people on here who say that their weight just dropped off, I can definitely say that I have had to fight for every single ounce I've lost!

    Success rate with "low" BMI

Hello, I had a lower BMI I am 5'6 and I was 229 when I had my surgery on 12/15/08. I am currenty 184. I love my band and am so happy that I had it. I had to pay cash as my isurance denied me because my BMI was to low. I am currently about 20 lbs away from my goal. I am almost a year out and hope to reach my goal by February or March. So to answer you question the lower your BMI the slower the weight loss. But its so worth it. Good luck.
  16. Hello! I've been reading this site for a couple of months. I started my 90 days of the physician monitored weight loss yesterday. If all goes according to plan, I should be sleeved in mid-August. I'm so nervous yet excited at the same time!!!! I'm very excited to meet everyone who is going through what I am and/or has done it before. It's very comforting.

    Hair loss question

If you are male, I urge you to stay away from Rogaine. It will screw up your hormone levels (testosterone). Not sure what its effect is on women. Every I know who's had this happen says it grows back within a few months. What happens is the stress from the change in eating patterns and from the surgery has your existing hair reach senescence (end of life), and it grows back normal, but because there's enough reaching senescence at one time it looks like hair thinning. I am very glad I keep my hair cut very close, it won't take as long when this happens to me for me to look "normal".

    Hair loss question

My hair loss was significant and noticeable. It start month 4 and ran through month 9. I hope it grows back, too. When I researched Nioxin, a salon owner says this works by creating split ends and gives illusion of thicker hair/hair growth. So I decided against it. I’m using castor oil and vitamin E oil and hoping I see growth again.
  19. I am 2 1/2 years post op and I gained 30 lbs this past year. Due to life circumstances I fell off track. (Mom diagnosed with cancer. She has good days and bad days so I take it one day at a time) I have been trying to get back on track and I have trouble exercising due to low hemoglobin levels I get too tired. I'm thinking about trying Qsymia, a prescription weight loss pill just to help get me jump started. I know people that have lost 20-30 lbs with it and feel great.
  20. So it's that time of year where we get poked a lil harder for that weekly insurance premium because our insurance blows and we have to pay more and more each year. My question is, does anyone know of an individual plan with any insurance company that covers lapband. Sad to say, that is my goal to find an Insurance company that covers it and then I can drop my insurance at work! $62.00 a week for insurance is a little steep for not covering weight loss and after months of emailing back and forth to see if they would add the policy, they say no because it will cause our premiums to go higher....HELLOOOO!?!? Any guidance in the direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Ronda

    Hair loss

How bad is this hair loss. Are we talking like baldness?
  22. Hello all! I am wondering about long term, like years postop, the success rate? Is there enough data to say that the sleeve is effective for one or two decades after initial weight loss? I am just wondering if anyone has maintained very long term.

    Long Term Challenges and Results

@@KensingtonWalk the sleeve was originally developed to help with stomach cancer there are probably stats about that the usage of having a sleeve for weight loss surgery is relatively new more and more and more docs are performing the sleeve with outstanding result!! @TheRealMeIsHere! covered about everything dealing with your subject very well put (please don't let that comment go to your head!! @Kindle@@WL WARRIOR @TheRealMeIsHere! these "wonderful" people reached goal, health and happiness etc with the help of the sleeve they are all aces they paid me to say the above!!! many, many many and many more have also continue reaching goal, and keeping their weight off - including someone special (me silly head at 3.5+ years and counting ) IMO life BEGINS with maintenance continuing to follow ALL the rules for the rest of our healthier, happier, longer life kathy
  24. I need any and all advise. I am 9 months post op. I lost 35 pounds and then nothing! I haven't changed my eating habits and even with fills I've stopped losing weight. I walk approximately 10,000 steps a day. No carbs. Has any one else experienced this? If so what should I do to boost my weight loss again? I was thinking to only do protein shakes for a couple days but not sure.
