    Issues With Splenda

I love Splenda and don't have problems with it, but my friend prefers to blue packet, Nutrasweet. Maybe try it and the old standby pink packet artificial sweetener? If you can't use any sugar replacements or find a Protein powder with a sugar-replacement that works for you, try the unsweetened Protein Powder or the chicken Soup flavor from unjury. You will need some kind of protein powder to get in your protein during the first months after surgery. Greek Yogurt has lots of protein too and could be sweetened with any sweetener, but I found it hard to get enough of it down at first. Lynda

    Unbelievable that I did this!!

I was lactose intolerant before the surgery - however, it affected me differently (out the other end) and I didn't throw up - so there were times when I would suffer the consequences and eat some ice cream -- however, I don't like throwing up so I will now pass on ice cream. I tried lactaid before surgery and it didn't really seem to make a difference in the reaction my body had to ice cream so I gave up on it. I don't care to drink milk at all and I actually can enjoy my Golden Spoon frozen yogurt as much as I did ice cream. I can't tolerate much of anything sweet as it is soooo very sweet tasting to me.

    Unbelievable that I did this!!

If you don't indulge when you have the craving, then you'll end up gorging eventually and that's even worse. I, unfortunately, have had to remove ice cream from my list -- I've had some 2x since surgery -- one time about 3 bites and another about 5-6 bites and apparently my new smaller stomach doesn't like it anymore as it came back up within 15 minutes of eating it ... so I'm not willing to give it another try ... thank goodness frozen yogurt seems to stay down okay. If I have a craving for something, then I eat a bite or two - that generally gets rid of the craving and I don't feel the least bit guilty for it at all.

    Hey JUDE048!

Jude Glad to here that it wil be sorted out for your mom. You have had a hell of a go of it. I hope the endorcinologist also is a huge help to you and can get things going so that the weight loss is not so frustrating for you. I think your doc could have gone a little easier on you. I think if I couldn't get anyhting down and my mom was in hosptal, I would have had icecream, WAY more times than three, so you're under stress with too much restriction. It is understandable. I haven't been on her much so hello to all of you. I have gotten my first fil yesterday and only eaten oatmeal since, so sorta scared about what can and can't get in. I also seem to have a whole new outlook which is kind of wild. I went back to school and am now a university student again..lol. I am far from the youngest now! The couses load is huge,my time next to nothing now and the only thing I am doing now is school and gym, that is it and it takes up all of my time. Problem is what the heck can i eat? I am at school ( right now) all day til 10 pm tonight and am starving. My backpack is already packed with books etc and water but sandwiches can get stuck, I can't carry a thermos too to keep stuff cold like yogurt, but I am afraid of something getting stuck and embarrassing myself. I amnot down much more. I am now 294 but i will take it. I feel helthier, more confident and i can now do 45 mins on the treadmill without keeling over. I think of you guys often as you were there for me from the get go and even if I do not write I still read what threads are sent to my email every day. kim

    My Life as a Bandster

I just wanted to come over and say hi! You are doing great! It sounds like you are in the process of taming your sweet tooth and winning! As for the carbs, most of all of us that have a weight problem have a carb problem. For me,, the more carbs I eat, the hungrier I feel, the moodier I feel, I just feel insatiable!!! It could also be something called Candida that requires a body cleanse. It is a yeast in our bodies that demands we eat carbs and sweets. I am doing good. I am not physcially hungry, but mentally hungry. I want to taste and feel the textures of food. I am day 3 post of today. Dr. Miranda said I could have yogurt, the drinkable kind, tomorrow. I read somewhere that someone said they could have skinny cow cheese on their fourth day. I am going to email her and ask. I don't think I want to weigh myself until my fill if I can help it. Someone recommended that. I think it was good advice. I am sure I will tell from my clothes. This time isn't really intended for weight loss anyway. How soon after surgery did you schedule your fill? Did you just email them or call? Who did you call? Keep in touch! God Bless!! Audree

Gluten Intolerant and Sleeve, Anyone have and advice?

I have Celiac and was sleeved 11 months ago. One of my favorite foods is Subway????. I order a turkey sub without the bread. They put it in a salad bowl for me and I eat it with a knife & fork. Greek yogurt, string cheese and turkey bites are a staple for me. I don't eat bread at all, even gluten free. Doesn't go down or sit well????
  7. Think about you too! I had to keep a timer at the table at first and time two-five minutes in between bites and 60 second chewing. It was annoying but worth it. Chew chew chew and do not reach for a drink. Also use a baby spoon/fork - it definitely helped me. If you still have problems then go back to yogurt and foods you can tolerate for a week and try again, as others have said already.
  8. I was not able to really eat anything (except yogurt and over easy eggs) for almost 8 weeks- it's different for everyone, but just because you are cleared for pureed/soft foods doesn't mean they will go down easy. If it doesn't go well the first time, try again the next week. I literally woke up at 8 weeks able to eat pretty much anything and MUCH more of it- I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing

How much restriction from 1st fill?

Well I ate an egg, one slice of toast AND a yogurt. Grr.
  10. Go slow, I know there is a real feeling of seeing what you can tolerate early. I know everyone's plan is different, and that some people tolerate things better than others. However, you only get one chance to heal right. No reason to rush it and even chance that something may not go right. If your not supposed to be on soft foods yet, don't test it... Stick with the basics and the first few weeks of restrictions will be past. My other suggestion was to maybe try some yogurts.
  11. My diet is also restrictive, first day after surgery was only clear liquids. Then 14 days of liquid-protein drinks, yogurt, jello, low fat cream soups-strained. After 2 weeks I can move to mushies but no meat until week 4. then very gradually. My doctor's office has never had anyone with a leak with following this diet. I am looking forward to having some mashed potatoes but I am more than willing to wait for it. The thought of mushies scare me right now. I am just focusing on liquids and getting my proteins in.
  12. my pre op is harsh !! 2 litres of milk 2 litres of water one muller lite yogurt and a bovril stock cube !! Only one week tho , day four tomorrow and it's not too bad ..... ?!

Rice free chicken and broccoli casserole

3 chicken breasts sautéed in 1 tsp olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper 2 packages of frozen cauliflower, boiled until tender then chopped (I pulsed it in the food processor), seasoned with salt and pepper 1 package frozen broccoli pieces, blanched in boiling Water 1 can 98% fat free cream of mushroom Soup 1/2 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt 2 TB Hellmans light mayo 1 tsp garlic powder 2 cups of shredded low fat sharp cheddar cheese Mix soup, yogurt, mayo, and garlic powder. Spray 9x13 pan with cooking spray. Layer cauliflower, chicken, broccoli, sauce and cheese. Bake in 350 oven for 30. I attached the stats for 1/9 of the pan. I can't manage quite that, but a half cup is just a bit shy.

    November 2013 Post Op

Oh ok I didn't realize u had some complications! That's entirely different! Yes u should follow your surgeons advice and discharge instructions. .i just know for myself I was soooooo weak on just clears and shakes:( I'm feeling like a new person now that I've added ricotta cheese and yogurt!
  15. For me the problem is I'm not a huge egg fan and I don't even want to think about cottage cheese. : ( but I did look at amazon as suggested and called the doctor to see what I could try out of the cook books I am looking at. He said some of the same as you suggested and also suggested yogurts. I'm not a fan of that either. But I'll give it all a shot because I went to eat a piece of kraft cheese and started gagging and heaving before I could finish chewing the first bite and I used to love that!! There are many things I "crave" but it's all in my mind. My body isn't craving it. Like we passed a pizza place and oh I wanted it. My fiancé got a slice and I was all ready for my bite and as soon as I went to put it to my mouth I felt sick. So needless to say lots of the things I crave are all in my head. I can do small gulps but not big ones and as far as the rule breaking goes I am going to try to break the habit before going around the rules. Lol. It's one of those things that I might be able to do but like the other person said I need or feel like I need something to wash it down with.
  16. I'm just on the 3rd week post op but I'll tell you about the change after the surgery. I have no longer hunger but I know I MUST eat for energy and the amount of food that I can eat is 2 tablespoons. I have sleeved in France so the restriction post-op for diet is a bit different, my doctor said I can eat anything I want but blended. The first two weeks it has to be only Fluid (but I can eat yogurt) then the 3rd week I can start eating pureed food like potato smashed. Oh, yes, but no candies no soda, all sweet stuff. Eat a little at a time (4 times a day) on the fix hour, I'm not hungry but I just eat on the meal time. Eat very small amount and slowly and the most important thing is at least 1 L of Water everyday 20 minutes before and after the meal. After the research I'd done on my own, like you, I asked him about Protein shake and he said, no need, no supplementary diet of any kind is necessary at the moment. He told me to eat only small amount of natural food. Seems like he needs me to get used to my new stomach first and learn that I can live on a very small amount of food Personally I try to eat as much as protein as possible like eggs, purred fish, Greek yogurt with purred fruits, cooked brocoli purred, mainly protein, fruits and vegetable. One time I tried Pasta purred with salmon and I felt sick, so no pasta at the moment. My doctor said I have 3 years post-op to learn to eat right to maintain the weight for life. I guess that at some point the hunger will return, I will be able to eat more than 2 spoons per meal but at least the experience of being obese for 20 years and receiving the second chance should remind me to pick the best choice of food and move my (hopefully smaller) ass to exercise to keep this gift for life. And I know I can do it because during the pre-op I tried the low carb diet to see if I can make it after the surgery (my surgeon never asked me to lose weight before the surgery) and it worked pretty well actually, I wasn't really too strict because I ate small amont of carb only for lunch or Breakfast but not for dinner and I lost 13 lbs in 2 months before the surgery between my first consultation with my surgeon and the date of operation. What's different is I've lost almost 19 lbs in 20 days post-op woo hoo!
  17. I am 5 weeks out and I still feel really nauseous when I eat/drink. I am unable to even come close to getting the amount of protein/calories/fluids I am supposed to get, because a few bites and I feel sick. I vomit at least once a day. I'm still on soft foods, most of which I can't tolerate. I am trying to concentrate on consuming higher Protein foods. The things I have found I can tolerate pretty well are yogurt, cottage cheese, and pudding. Plain Water is about all I drink--its all that sounds good. When I swallow food, most of the time it feels like its stuck in the base of my throat and won't go down. So naturally it comes back up. Is that normal? And if so, does this feeling get better eventually? I have been trying all the things the doctors say to do--eating tiny bites, eating slowly, chewing food 20-30X before swallowing, etc....I take 20mg Prilosec (Omeprazole) daily. I have been losing weight pretty rapidly, but I'm worried it will come to a screeching halt if I keep taking in so few calories! (My average has been between 300-400 calories a day). Anyway, I was really hoping to feel better than this by now and its really getting depressing. I am one of the "lucky" ones who has 200+ lbs to lose, and I fear I have a long road ahead. My 6 week check up is on Feb. 23rd, but I was hoping for some insight here, as that seems like a million years away! Sorry for the depressing post....I'm just bummed out at the moment. Thanks for listening and I'd appreciate your insight.
  18. Besides my Protein smoothies, I use Torani and Davinci syrups to flavor plain Greek yogurt and to make flavored coffee/lattes and hot chocolate (homemade, protein rich recipe) . I also mix it with Protein Powder, greek yogurt, milk and sometimes add nuts and freeze to make protein "ice cream". I've got hazelnut, almond, english toffee, salted caramel, irish cream, tiramisu, pumpkin pie and gingerbread in stock right now. I've never bought the fruit flavors because I just use real fruit when I want those flavors.

    Bacon....

Hi all, I am 6 weeks post op and I am having a really hard time with breakfast. Per my surgeons guidelines, he recommends avoiding bacon, sausage (even chicken), ham etc. but my issue is that I hate eggs! So I am tired of having protein shakes and yogurt for breakfast. I also don’t want to eat chicken or seafood every morning. I’ve had some bacon and I’m wondering if I am “cheating” and messing myself up. I hit a stall at 3 weeks, had my menstrual, and went up! It finally broke last week and I lost what I gained but it just doesn’t feel like I’ve made any progress in weeks! I’ve lost 22 pounds since surgery on 2/24 and with my 2 months coming up I feel like I should have lost at least 30 since my starting weight was over 300 pounds! Here are my questions: 1. For those who’ve had a VSG what was your average weekly and/or monthly weight loss after the first month? 2. Do you eat bacon, sausage, or ham for breakfast? 3. Have you cheated and still lost? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give because I am going crazy!

JULY SLEEVERS- How are you doing?

@dreamingsmall - I'm on week 6 and my daily food consist of the following: probiotic shot (Good Belly Shot) early morning - before my workout. Then I drink Water during the workout and for 1 hour after. Breakfast: drinkable yogurt, with protein fruit flavored drink and 8 oz of water Lunch: Meat based soup (like French Onion, or Chicken and Vegetable) or Chicken Taco meat, cheese, sour cream, salsa all about 1/2 cup. Eat Slowly take a min between bites Dinner: Meatloaf with potatoes and steamed veg's or soft grilled pork with veg. I drink about 32 oz of water in between eating. I drink water before bed. Most of the water is flavored with protein powders. So I get 60-80 mg I found by eating slower and stopping when full, I eat less, and I drink more! Today I'm in a pair of pants I haven't worn in 2 years! I know it's working by the clothes not the scale. Hope that helps.

    Soft foods portion sizes?

At your stage I could eat 2-3oz of food depending on what i was eating. Dense protein only 2 oz, but yogurt I could eat 4oz. I weighed my food because I felt it was more accurate. I didn't have any problems eating either. I was a fast healer. I think it is great because you can transition away from shakes faster then those that have more issues eating. Just stick to appropriate portions sizes and the eating plan your doc gave you and you should be fine. I am 3 months post-op and I eat between 900-1100 calories a day and I am losing just fine. I run 2-3 miles 4-5 days a week for exercise.

Don’t want to eat, I mean drink

Part of what you are experiencing is the natural and normal phenomenon of post surgical bowel sounds and gurgles. LOL. I have it and I'm 18 months out. It does usually get a little better. Stick to easy. Protein Smoothies Protein frappacinos and teacinos Iced protein coffee Blended soups (added protein powder) Canned cream soups (added protein powder) Ricotta Bake Cottage Cheese + apple sauce or sugar free preserves Greek Yogurt + apple sauce or sugar free preserves Making tuna or chicken salad then whizzing it up in a mini food processor. So good actually. Just a smooth texture. But taste is awesome!
  23. Has anyone tried Chobani Greek Yogurt. It comes in a 5.3 OZ size. 13 grams of protein also 13 grams of sugar:( but I find it avery satisfying breakfast. Add a little fruit and some granola it my current fav. 120 cals per serving
  24. Dear rosiegirl, Dr. Roslin did mine and my sisters surgery too. Hers in sept. Mine on Oct 20, I spent 11 days in the hospital, had some complications, so once I could eat which was 5 days after surgery, he put me on a mushy pureed food, I thought it strange and my Mom called Debbie his asst. And then for the ray of the time I ate nothing but yogurt and cream of wheat. Tomorrow I will be 3 weeks out, so hopefully I can change it up a little. Take care

Where are you on your level? Regular food or soft food? I mix it up every day pretty much, but I have my standbys: Special K protein cereal (sometimes with 1/2 banana), 2 servings of skim milk/day, 4 wheat thins w/ 1 oz pepper jack cheese, 2% cottage cheese w/ fruit mixed in, pure protein bars, greek yogurt smoothies, flat out "chips" with salsa or hummus. Today I'm having: B: 1/2 cup special K w/ 1/2 c skim milk L: 1/2 serving of leftover meatloaf D: small bowl of leftover chicken stew (MIL recipe- even better the next day) Snacks: 12 oz skim milk, 1/2 cup 2% cottage cheese with no sugar added mandarin oranges, flatout chips with salsa for dipping I don't alwys eat what I have dished out- usually there's leftovers. I am 8 weeks out today- will be adding salads and nuts here in about a week- can't wait to make my own trail mix. I am not a no-or super low carb fanatic- I eat some carbs. My weight loss has been fine, I think. 37 lbs in 8 weeks. Total weight loss: 67 lbs -Kendra
