  1. Thanks for the tips. Once I’m off of clear liquids I will definitely be mixing with yogurt or SF pudding. Its so difficult right now as I can’t really drink a lot at one time. Can’t wait for this part to be over!

  3. Man, I had forgot about the crushed pills. One important note for anyone reading this thread that may not be aware - not all pills can be crushed. Some medications are coated to pass through the stomach and break down in the intestine. Do not blindly crush all pills! This is one of the reasons that you need to go over your medication list with your surgeon, to determine which pills you may crush. To the OP, I mixed mine with yogurt. Back then I ate the strong fruity flavored ones because they were the texture I was used to. (I only eat plain greek Fage now) Strong flavors allowed me to mask the bitterness of the meds. I am now back to normal with taking pills. I take 6 pills with a sip of anything. And 4 of those are rather large vitamins.

    Question for WLS veterans

There are two phases to weight loss surgery. These are the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and I slid into the maintenance phase at around 7 months. My weight dropped like a lead brick. Those who have sleeve surgery tend to lose weight at a slower pace and encounter many stalls along the way. They can achieve almost the same level of weight loss because the transition to the maintenance phase may take a couple years. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Without sufficient protein, your body will scavenge protein from other areas of your body, such as your muscles. Protein is extremely important after surgery as its job in the body is to build and maintain tissues including your body's major organs and skeletal muscles. Protein deficiency, when continued over a long period of time can cause a disease known as protein caloric malnutrition. Common symptoms are poor healing, fatigue, hair loss and muscle wasting. Immediate post op, protein promotes healing of the staple line and incisions. I am not an expert on sleeve surgery, so I am not a good source on their diet approach. In the weight loss phase, I was restricted from consuming fats and sugars because the part of my stomach that normally process this type of food was cut away. But when I reached maintenance, my intestines evolved to be able to accept this type of food again. After I reached maintenance I had a discussion with my nutritionist about meal composition. Her advise was meals should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs but always put protein first. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. I knew that fats are important because they help to control hunger. Also because I was diabetic prior to surgery, I restrict myself from sugars. So primarily, I followed my nutritionist guidelines but also incorporate the use of fats into my diet. I am 4 1/2 years post-op.

    December Sleevers??

I just started my 2 week liquid diet today.....so my surgery is the 20th. I am freaking out about making it for 2 weeks on nothing but protein drinks jello and yogurt. I am just trying to keep my mind off of it and ignore the clock. I wish i had a doctor with an easier pre op. I am not in this position because i have stellar self control! I am expecting a few really horrible days and then hopefully it will get easier!
  6. I have had a stall last 5 weeks, and finally today I saw my weight drop. So I'm still 1 pound away from reaching 100 lb weight loss, I think I can make it happen before Dec 11 which will mark 5 months post op. I know you didn't want to hear any advice, so if you want any, ask. I'm not sure i can help much, all I know is from my own example, and from what the doc recommends, to me. I figured its always best to listen to your body, without giving in too much, gotta be strict with it, and consequent. Maybe having a reward system might help? And the rewards cant be food related, lol. My family always has pizza on Fridays and I usually took one little slice, or two if they were really small 1/8's. So I stopped doing it. Also took out the desert options of small dark chocolate mint, and replaced it with some greek yogurt, if needed. And lastly stopped buying fish that was breaded, which I started a month ago. It seems to be so easy to fall off the wagon, what matters is that we can see the change in choices we made and come back to basics. Keeping myself accountable is one way I deal with my diet and I don't allow for any grazing. I started using a trick too. After my meals I wait 30 min or so to drink, and then I go to brush my teeth, and this way I don't want to mess them up till I am hungry enough for my next meal, and prevent grazing. Hope that gives you some ideas, also, keep in mind its the holidays, and normally people gain in this time a year a few pounds. I know we should be losing, but we are humans with weaknesses. I'm pretty sure after the holidays it will be easier to get back in former rhythms. I wish you all the best on your journey. Don't give up and focus on what you can change to make it better. Ask your doc to guide you personally. Btw, are you seeing your dietitian? They might help as well. I will see mine after holidays for 3-rd time since surgery. They usually request a menu sampler of what we ate 1-2 days before the appointment. Its vital to be honest and to talk all ups and downs over with them, they will only help when they know where the problem might be. Best of luck
  7. Oh my gosh it’s not just me! I’m dying here too. I’m 6 days post op. I need to start upping my food intake I don’t think I’m doing enough. I have like 1/3 a oikos triple zero yogurt in the morning usually and like 1/4c cream of chicken. One premier protein a day. And I just had to up my water intake cause I was getting dehydrated. But I keep reading all the people are eating more then that so I don’t know if I’m getting enough. But yogurt and the cream soup. It’s wayyyy better then broth. Feels like food 😂
  8. Hey all! I had my surgery November 15th. I started off at 254 before liquid pre op. To date I am 226. I am very happy I’m not dropping it too fast. I havent seen the 220’s in three years so I’m stoked. I tried to have a little smoked Gouda yesterday. No no no. My tummy did NOT like that. Nor does it like anything sweet. I am learning that I need to just stick to the plan. Lol. I am testing the waters I guess? And its just not happening. So my diet consists of cottage cheese, refried beans, yogurt, and protein shakes. I am not having any issues getting my water down. I am however very constipated. I mean BAD. Ive tried to add miralax to my water, but its almost like I can tell its there and its hard to drink it. Any suggestions? Anywho just wanted to update everyone. Hope I’m not the only one......
  9. Check whatever materials/lists you were given, as what's permitted varies from plan to plan. You should be able to have water, protein drinks, broth, creamy soups, yogurt (such as Oikos triple zero), sugar-free popsicles . . . I'll admit that I didn't much enjoy the liquid phase or the slushy stage, but once I could eat real food again, I became much, much happier. It really isn't that long, although while you are doing it, it seems like forever. But after the first month . . . you'll have many more options. Good luck!

    I've Fallen Off!!!

I too am so sorry about your sister. It breaks my heart. the friends here who are advising to only focus on protein are right. I’m not an expert. But I’m doing well, almost 5 months in. Main thing to think about besides protein is STOP ALL SUGAR, sweet drinks, bread, desserts, fake sugars. ive found that fat alone doesn’t stop my loss of fat ever. Full fat diary and meat don’t hurt me and taste fantastic. Healthy fats have a place with your protein. Don’t eat low fat anything. Eating a piece of juicy hamburger or a full fat unsweetened greek yogurt will keep you losing weight AND help you feel full and satisfied. All sweet carbs make you crave sugar and that’s is what you do not want. A week or two without sugar and you will lose the desire for it. No bread, no fruit, no sweets. 85% chocolate is ok. Potatoes and sweet potatoes even with butter are fine. I promise you, giving up all sweetness really works and after you kick the habit, it’s painless. good luck sweetie, you will lose the rest of your weight. And your sister will be proud.

Acid reflux/GERD - will this go away?

Take probiotics he helps they sell the liquid form in Health food stores and activate yogurt
  12. Sorry just saw this, I sometimes have pain where my incision is. I try so much to drink, I feel you have to wake up so flipping early just to get all my fluids in. Sometimes I manage and other days I am shy by 1 or 2 cups. I have days I am so hungry, but I get full quickly and other days I could barely look at food.I don't force myself to eat, but I make sure on those days I have my protein in drinks or plain yogurt. Pills are so hard to swallow.I put them in yogurt and it goes down easier that way. I wish you much success in your future weight loss! Sent from my Nexus 5 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. Hello! So I'm on day 1 of my liquid preop diet. It's been rough but I'm getting through it.. My question was for any suggestions on non sweet protein ideas. I'm not allowed to have any solids and only 1 yogurt every other day. Broths are approved and that's mainly what I've been drinking but it lacks in protein. I hate the artificial sweetner taste of protein shakes including premier. I ordered some protein soups and unflavored protein powder from bariatric pal but it won't be here for 2 days. Any suggestions or tips are welcone!!
  14. I'm actually only supposed to have plain. I was recommended by another sleever Dannon Oikos Triple Zero. It only has 4g of sugar. I think it tastes horrible right now but I think everything sweet tastes bad right now. Even my plain greek yogurt has 6g of sugar and it was approved to eat. I used to love Chobani Simply 100 but I think they may have taken it off the market. I don't see it and isn't online either.
  15. im finding it almost impossible to find sugar-free yogurt (i will skip the plain) . i found one brand at one store, it has 4grams of sugar, comes in a bunch of flavors, i think its called carbmaster but im confused why there isnt any other options at the many stores ive been in. Oh, and my cat being a yogurt fiend, knows im eating yogurt but after one lick, she knew this wasnt the good yogurt so she constantly comes up to sniff it and walks away in a huff. even cats dont like sugar free stuff. lol as far as going to the bathroom, i had my last meal (chicken wings) the sunday before my wed surgery. so was on only liquids for 2 days, then of course only liquid the first week after. i was scared for when i would be "ready" to go but whew luckily it came maybe the sunday after. i hope you find relief in the otc meds . ive been eating cottage cheese since nov 22. was so happy to eat something of substance. it doesnt necessarily stay down when i eat it but its better than protein shakes . try to puree chicken breast when youre able to eat soft foods. its surprisingly good. ive mixed one spoonful of the chicken with one spoonful of instant potatoes. it tastes like a normal meal.
  16. HI javaknut, thank you for responding im almost positive that the stabbing pain i had is because of an adhesion. Right now, i dont have that pain but it has come and gone since the first time i felt it (friday night). Im told that this is common with most surgeries and if surgically removed, another one might form. great. But ya, im thinking we both should keep an eye on it . as far as reflux goes, i do sleep elevated not only because of the heartburn but i have chronic asthma. too many times if i ended up sleeping flat and i woke up with stomach acid pouring out my nose! i have tried tiny spoonfuls of jello, yogurt and broth and it just sits in my throat. but sugar free powerade goes down better and even pureed chicken stays down. if i take too big of sips or spoonfuls then forget it , it will shoot out my mouth if i talk or whatever . gross. if your pain returns, are you planning on contacting your surgeon or anyone about it? i almost called 911 fri night , but i was more embarrassed being inside a store trying to lift up my stomach just to walk an inch. i didnt want to lay down and wait for the paramedics to find me on aisle 11 LOL. i see your progress and i am impressed. you have done very well ! your surgery was only 5 days before mine. i lost 12lbs. and it has stayed at 12lbs. im thinking its my inactivity , cant be from the foods im vomiting every few minutes after eating

    Helpful Food tips

I was told the first week I could have anything that passed through a strainer. So I went nuts at the soup aisle and got all the lower fat soups I could find (low fat, low carb, and low sugar). I even got chili and some spicy chicken soups. I even got the spicy turkey chili at panera, and the chick-fil-a spicy chicken tortilla soup. What was better is that when I moved to mushy foods I was told that all foods were open, but the texture had to be that of applesauce or smoother. Basically anything that you can eat without having to chew. My surgeon told me, if I am having any cravings - if I am willing to throw it in a blender - go for it. I told him I have a Vitamix, so in theory, I could liquify my iPhone and eat it - he chuckled and agreed. Those same soups and more are now open to me, as well as yogurt. If they have chunks, they go in the Vitamix and all is good. I still can only handle 2-3oz at a time, but at least I have some variety. I feel your pain, but that timeline is short in the grand scheme of things. Power thru it. The more you stick to the liquids and amounts - the faster you will heal. Make sure you get those proteins and waters at the minimal amounts at least. If you slack on those, you might get stuck in liquid only diet purgatory another week!
  18. Yes sugar free only but I agree that most sugar free tastes awful so instead of vanilla flavored yogurt, I prefer plain. I'm not taking much foods. Just limited to yogurt, cream of wheat or strained / purred soups but not chicken soup more like broth type. It's a challenge to get requirements in so I'm sticking to 2 protein shakes and yogurt at this point. I will be able to move on to soft purred foods in 3 days so that will be great (I hope!) Looking forward to cottage cheese and soft foods like fish. I think it will be a huge improvement to go down to one shake a day. I feel better today. Still have that odd feeling inside (probably gas and like things aren't quite right in there.) I'm not having pain but discomfort. Def hard to sleep past 6 hours because I'm uncomfortable in bed. Haven't gone to the bathroom yet so going to pick up milk of mag. I'm taking stool softner but burns my throat so going to pick up solace today. I have flax seed but forgot to use it. Not sure when I should start to worry but I did a 2 liquid fast so haven't gone since last Monday which was my last meal. I didn't have reflux before and fortunately don't feel it now. I'm taking prilosec to prevent it.

    Day 4 Post Op

So, I may have spoke too soon. Last night was rough. I feel really bloated today (and had reflux all night). I assume I have a lot of gas, but can’t get anything moving. Kind of frustrating. On top of that, I have been straight clear liquids (basically just water) because days 1-4 postop were miserable. So, I was burning fat supplies (exclusively) for energy, which really contributed to the nausea I think. I feel like this also affected my sleep. Not only did I not sleep (nap) yesterday at all, but I wasn’t really tired last night either. I was up until after 3, then tossed and turned and got out of bed at 6. I ate some yogurt this morning, and that felt satisfying. I’m heading to the store to grab some different protein shakes to try (and get some more gas Ex). Really hope this gas dissipates soon.

    November sleevers here

I started to feel that way with liquids a couple days after surgery. When I moved to thick liquids that changed a bit with the protein drinks, and even more so once I got to mushy foods. I swear I can sip a whole Premiere Protein down in 15-20 mins if I wanted, but I cannot eat more than 2-3oz of yogurt or eggs, etc. Gives even more credence to not drinking 30 mins before and after food in my eyes.
  21. Thanks for your concern. Seems like surgeon’s plans vary greatly. Mine did clear liquid day of surgery and full liqids to include shakes, yogurt and puréed soup from day 2-7. Then I do to soft foods. I’m tolerating it fine just doesn’t taste good. How are you feeling.
  22. I hope you are doing better. I had my sleeve done on nov 15 2017, so im not that far ahead of you but concerned because many posts, publications, dr orders, and hospital orders told me only a clear liquid diet 1 week post op. definitely no protein shakes, no yogurt. I accidentally swallowed a fragment of a noodle from a soup can i was draining to try and drink the broth and i went into what seemed like shock. "dumping syndrome" is what i was told what was happening to me . pulse shot up to 200. (this was the first week) . Im dont even have enough of my own experience to preach about much of anything but I felt the need to say something. (i was allowed sugar free only protein drinks and sugar free yogurt after the 1st week) but very limited amounts. Its great to see your outlook on things now, and how youre improving wish you much success
  23. Hi, Im a new poster, new member to this group. I have been bulimic most of my life , so throwing up takes zero effort. I had gastric sleeve surgery and a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time (11/15/2017) I am unable to eat jello, yogurt , broth, lets just say the only thing I can keep down without it sitting in my throat is sugar-free powerade drink. I had a large hiatal hernia but it was repaired , I had my follow up with my bariatric surgeon/ doctor 2 weeks post surgery and asked him if its possible that the hernia surgery was repaired too tight? He said no. He had no explanation on why I cant actually swallow these things and my reflux is worse . I guess those who develop reflux post surgery include those who already have it so its horrible. I take 40mg omeprazole as needed .... not as prescribed (1 pill a day). ALSO, to make matters worse, it seems like I developed a full body yeast infection? (except its not where they usually are thank god). I have red welts, my wounds itch beyond words, then it spread to my lower stomach , then under my breasts, now its on my neck. I suppose if it travels down below then i will be furious. Ive tried otc calamine lotion, fungal itch creams nothing is even helping with the itch. ONE LAST THING I was doing ok as far as pain but the other night after I walked into a grocery store, I almost collapsed. I had what felt like a hot knife stabbing me in the large wound above my belly button. I was kind of stuck, not being able to walk in or out just stuck. I realized the pain was more of a ripping of my insides so I struggled and tried my hardest to hold up the bottom of my stomach so it wasnt putting pressure on that wound area. I can only assume its an adhesion . Now what? anyone experience these things? My surgeon wasnt concerned about me spewing throw up from most anything i try to swallow, wasnt concerned that my whole body is a huge rash and welts that itch beyond control. I havent even had a chance to tell him about the adhesion ... fearing his "thats what you signed up for" attitude. He is a great surgeon, I have no doubt and he has the best personality dont get me wrong. But dont know what to do about all of this . thanks for any advice

    First real foods

I just had my first real food. I’m 20 days post op. I made a soft boiled egg. I’ve been able to drink my protein drinks and eat yogurt, popsicles, and cottage cheese with no problem. After two very small bites, I felt like I ate a dozen eggs. So strange!
  25. My surgeons office had me on solids by week 2 and my body was sooo not ready !!!! Take it slow and don’t rush it . Start with triple zero yogurt for a couple weeks . That was my biggest mistake even though my dr said I could eat tuna and egg salad I definitely had dumping . I’m 10 months out now and down 90 pounds . Couldn’t be. Happier !!
