    4 Weeks and only 10lbs!

First off lower your calorie intake. You are only a month out so around 600 calories is where you should be at and eventually in the next few months build that up to 800. Second, the three week stall is a thing most people go through. It lasts anywhere from a week to three weeks. You'll have several stalls throughout your journey and yes, they are frustrating as hell, but they happen. Third, although I lost 23 pounds the first month I was also over 300 pounds and depending on your starting weight 10 pounds may very well be exceptional. Be proud of the fact that you lost 10 pounds in a month, that's an accomplishment! Finally, everyone loses at a different rate. Right now I'm 7 months out and lose an average of 1-3 pounds a week (I lost two pounds this week, two last week, and one the week before). The weight WILL come off if you stick to a healthy diet and lifestyle. Try not to stress about it because my doctor said stress can lessen your weight loss (incredibly difficult not to stress about it, I know). You got this! You can do it! I wish you the best!

    Crappy Dietician

I think it’s time for a new dietician. They should be supportive, a source of information & guidance & motivating. If they’re not you need to find a new one. I was a bit meh about mine too. (Decided I was in the wrong profession after handing over $80 for each ten minute appointment.) I was going every fortnight for 6months, then monthly. She’s never weighed me. Never measured me. Never asked me to record my food intake. She barely asks me what I eat each day. She took a very scant health & diet history at the first appointment. Guess you can’t share much in 10 mins! After the first appointment she emailed two pages of pre surgical diet guidelines & I’ve received no other information in 16+ months. Oh & at my last appointment she asked for the very first time if she could look up my blood test results. (head shake, eye roll, shrug) I did lots of research myself & studied all the material provided by my surgeon. I worked out my own post surgical diet & maintenance plan. The only reason I stuck with her was that every now & then she’d share a piece of golden advice. She was the one that said not to worry about my cholesterol levels rising because it was being excreted from my fat stores & into my blood steam as I lost weight. I did some reading & she was right. She’s low pressure & that works for me.
  3. Thank you so much for the kind, supportive words - I really appreciate it. You're down 112lb in 7 weeks? HOLY CRAP! Or, was some of that pre-op? I lost most of my 25# pre-op. Since the surgery (sleeved on 8/19) I'm only down two additional pounds. 😞 And, what in the world is "ricotta bake"? Sounds yummy! Is there a recipe you can share?
  4. I'm religiously sticking to my post-op diet (liquids only until 9/2) but today was tough - really tough. I'm starting to get "phantom" tastes in my mouth (all day today I "tasted" grilled burgers) and I'm starting to crave solid food badly. Not a lot of it - I'm really not hungry - just enough to quash this urge. Not even junk food...I was DYING for a slice of red bell pepper earlier. For lunch, I had my 1/2 cup of low-fat cream of chicken soup...went down without issue and even had really small pieces of chicken in it (which I chewed diligently). Tell me this too, passes? Do I REALLY need to wait until 10/2 before eating anything solid? Obviously, I'm not ready to slam down a 6-course meal, but OMG...what I wouldn't give for a small piece of grilled chicken, etc. As I type this, I'm making giant grilled chicken burritos and jalapeno cheddar rice for my husband and son. What I wouldn't give to just have a small bit of the burrito - don't even want rice! Having to make this stuff and not being able to eat it is cruel. 😞

    Crappy Dietician

I only saw the dietician for about 10 minutes while I was in the hospital. I was a revision from sleeve to RNY for GERD, and my BMI was 21. I had discussed my hope I would not lose too much more weight with my surgeon, who said that with proper diet I shouldn't lose much, so I was looking forward to talking with her. It turns out that she had really nothing to say. Her caseload is obese people, like I used to be, and so I'm saying things like "So I could add peanut butter to my shakes?" and she is nodding yes. Well, it turns out that too much fat in one meal (like peanut butter added to a shake) makes for watery poop the next day. I mean, she meant well, but had no experience with someone in my position. I ended up Googling "Bilroth II diet" which is the closest non-bariatric surgery to RNY and is done for stomach cancer. I figured diet advice for cancer patients would be closer to my circumstances, but really it's trial and error for me right now. When I see my surgeon in October I'm going to ask for another dietician appointment with somebody else if I'm still struggling.
  6. Mussels in white wine sauce and braised fennel. I ate 10 + about 1/4 cup of fennel: 112 calories (since I didn’t have any bread, I didn’t have anything to soak up sauce 😕 )
  7. I've lost 45kg total since my sleeve in October 2019 and I feel amazing! Still have days when I feel big, but then I take pictures like this and think holy cow! I've been doing bodypump classes and I'm even seeing some baby muscles in my arms and legs, and it's really helped with my loose skin. Now to work on maintaining, which has always been the hard part of weight loss for me.

    Gain weight

a 10-20 lb gain during year three is VERY common. I'm five years out and still there - and I have to fight like heck just to keep it there - 20 lbs heavier than my lowest weight! I've pretty much given up on losing those 20 lbs because it would take cutting back a lot on my calories, which I'm apparently not willing to do. But...that's what it takes.

    Anyone for September 2020?

Sept 9 for me and Sept 23 for my husband! We are super excited to take this journey as we have tried everything you can think of over the past 10 years together. We have over 300lbs combined to loose and we are determined!
  11. most normal WLS patients lose 15-25 lbs the first month, so yes, 10 lbs in the first three weeks is fine. Of course, there are outliers on either side of that range, but just from my own observation from hanging around these another boards for the last 5-7 years, that seems to be a pretty normal range. I think people sometimes have a skewed perception because of shows like "My 600 lb Life", but you have to keep in mind that those folks start out WAY heavier than most of us do. as long as your weight is gradually trending down, you're good. I lost 16 lbs during the first month (and I started out more than 100 lbs more than you, and I lost all of my excess weight - so you're fine!
  12. I am 3 weeks post RYN conversion from sleeve for bile reflux and a large hiatal hernia repair. I am down 10 pounds, and I happy about that but honestly I have lost that (or more) on Weight Watchers eating 1,800 calories. I am averaging 600-650 calories. Getting 64 grams of protein. Basically sugar free, getting my water and walks.... am I over reacting, or does 10 pounds seem kind slow....?

    Surgery Day

    VSG Surgery Day. 8/19/20
  14. I have not been here in quite some time so Iittle update -background. I was sleeved 12/27/17. Starting weight was 256, I managed to lose 61 pounds and got to a low of 195, ( this was May of 2019)then I started to regain. I refocused, got back on the right eating plan/exercise but continued to gain weight. Went to see the nutritionist last fall for help. We went over my food logs and by the numbers I was a little low in calories for the amount of exercise I was doing so we adjusted my plan but still no weight loss. I was 242 in Jan/Feb. I was prescribed the generic form of Contrave in March for a 3 month trial, managed to lose all of 5 pounds down to 237. Labs have been decent- except now I developed high cholesterol and my primary prescribed Atorvastin(Lipitor) and I have been on that since May. I consistently tell the dietician that I feel no restriction and can eat way more than I think I should. However in all this time, not once have I had a scope to check to see if my pouch has been stretched out. My primary thinks I am eating to much, the nutritionist thinks I'm not eating enough so I'm just trying to eat enough protein and stay low on the carbs. I have gone as low as 900 calories and as high as 1500. carbs as low as 20 and high as 75. All of that to say I found out my original surgeon does not believe in performing revisions so I have a consultation in 2 weeks with a surgeon that does perform revisions just so I can get answers. I still have sleep apnea, that has improved some but not enough for me to come off my CPAP. Recently I have had mild cases of heartburn late at night so I have altered my diet again, cutting out dairy, coffee, spicy foods to see what could be triggering it. I did intermittent fasting in July of just watermelon and water and managed to get down to 224. I know this was not healthy but hey I was willing to try anything. So all of that to say, with my weight as it is now, my BMI is 36. I meet insurance requirements for BMI with my sleep apnea as comorbidity but the surgeon must find it medically necessary for revision- but if surgeon requires weight loss and lose weight that puts my BMI under requirements, would insurance deny the revision?
  15. Hello everyone! New here. I’m hoping to get some helpful advice. I personally have been struggling with my weight a lot of my adult life, but most seriously in the last 9-10 years since the birth of my youngest. Current weight is about 230 and height is 5’5. (Although I realize my primary doctor has me in the computer as 5’6). That puts my current BMI at 37-38. I am seriously considering the gastric sleeve. I narrowed my initial research down to 2 surgeons. I live in the NYC area but am looking to have the surgery near Nassau county, Long Island. My insurance is Emblem Health/HIP for employees of the City of NY. The obstacle I foresee is that I don’t know if I have qualifying co-morbidities, as far as the insurance is concerned. I had a physical in June, and per my bloodwork, I have high triglycerides, slightly high cholesterol, and am pre-diabetic. I called the first surgeons office and the receptionist asked for my height and weight. Then she asked for any co-morbidities, and I mentioned the pre-diabetes. She shut me down right away and said that’s not enough, I would have to be diabetic and on medication. I mentioned to her that I am having an at home sleep study next week, she said to call back after I get those results. She didn’t even ask me what my insurance was, so I suppose this just the surgeons requirements. Anyone have any idea about whether the high cholesterol/triglycerides would count as a co-morbidity for insurance approval? Or is the possible sleep apnea the only other thing that might qualify me at this point? I was going to call the other surgeon I was considering, but this discouraged me a bit. If I am to do the surgery, I would love to do it sometime in the near future. I will be working from home for awhile due to COVID, so being able to do the next 6 months or so would be ideal. I also had an EKG done this summer, which came out OK, and I have recorded weights from doctors’ offices for June, July, and August. I think my insurance requires 6 months worth of documented weights. Thanks in advance for any insight/advice.

    Mental Health and Surgery

Thank you SO much for your input! It's taken me 5 years and tons of medication combinations to get to a place where I'm stable, and positive (for the most part). Now that I have the mental part under control, it's time to focus on the physical part. About 10 mins ago I finally got the courage to call and schedule my consultation appt! They were so nice, and it really relaxed the anxious feelings I was having about the whole thing. Sent from my SM-G988U using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. not everyone loses weight the first week. You were pumped full of IV fluids in the hospital, and it can take a few days for it to work its way out. I've heard of people gaining up to 10 lbs while in the hospital. also, once your weight loss starts up, be aware that the rate can vary tremendously between people. It doesn't fall off rapidly for everyone. So many things can affect it - gender, age, metabolic rate, activity level, starting BMI, how closely you follow your plan. The only two of those you really have any control over is your activity level and your level of commitment. You aren't starting out at a particularly high BMI in comparison to some other patients, and that is one of the factors. People who start out at 300+ lbs often lose faster than someone who starts out at 200 or 250. if you're committed to your program and rarely stray, you WILL lose the weight, whether fast or slow. I was a slow loser throughout the whole journey, and I managed to lose all of my excess weight. Just be patient and stay committed. As others say, it's a marathon rather than a sprint.

    Cramping feeling after swallowing

Are you sipping or gulping? I made the mistake of gulping my drink and I had a bad stomach pain that lasted a few seconds. My stomach is bloated as well and I have yet to have a bowl movement either. 😩 I’m going to give it a few days and if nothing happens I will contact my surgeons office and see what they suggest. I was sleeved on 8/19 as well.
  19. Wow - we're almost surgery twins! (Mine was 8/19.) I'm glad to know this is mostly normal. I thought about the yogurt, pudding & Jell-o being too much, but it's on my list an encouraged in order to get calories in and promote digestion. I'm sure those fudgesicles tasted heavenly! I sent a note to my Dr.'s team last night (hoping they'd see it first thing this morning & reply ASAP) but I haven't heard from them yet. Tylenol does NOTHING for any type of pain and that's all I'm on at this point. Also, the bloating, distension and all-around discomfort are getting old fast. I understand needing time to recover, but I've had a c-section, breast reduction, a tumor removed from the base of my brain, and other "minor" surgeries, yet I don't recall any of the recoveries being this drawn-out or uncomfortable. As for the , today was a beautiful day! LOL! Not quite a full-on BM, but enough that I got A LOT of relief. Hope it happens soon for you too!!!

    Food Before and After Photos

Weird breakfast, but it works for me. 10 Costco shrimp with a tsp of cocktail sauce. Small slice of ciabatta with bruschetta topping. 125 calories.
  21. Of the mainstream procedures, the sleeve will be the most benign of them when it comes to supplement needs and the amount of trouble one can get into by ignoring them and the labs. Supplementing with the sleeve is largely an individual thing - there is much more influence by individual variations and dietary habits than there is from the surgery. I've never heard of B1 being a particular problem, but given that the primary dietary source is from the grain complex, and many people are into low carb dieting (Atkins, Keto, etc.) that minimizes that food group, it isn't surprising that such deficiencies would be showing up - not from the procedure, but from the chosen diet. My wife is chronically low in Potassium, but that is just her, not her WLS (as DS in her case.) That is managed by checking levels periodically and adjusting supplements as needed - just as if she had never had WLS. I have heard it hypothesized that there might be some iron absorption issue with the sleeve owing to the somewhat more rapid transit times of food through the stomach, but I haven't seen any validation of that concern. The malabsorbing (RNY, DS) procedures specifically do malabsorb minerals such as iron to varying degrees as much of the mineral absorption happens in the duodenum which is bypassed entirely (in the RNY) or partially (in the DS) so iron levels can certainly be more of a challenge with those patients. I had a bleed a few years ago that sapped my iron/ferritan levels, but was able to restore them to normal in a few months by doubling my oral iron supplement; most with an RNY or DS would need iron infusions to recover from those levels. I tend to lose a bit of D normally so have been supplementing that since before my VSG and continue to do so at moderate levels (2-5k IU) both from that perspective, and also our surgeon prefers to see us in the higher end of the normal range on the blood levels; some in the malabsorbing camp will use 50k IU supplements to keep things in line (particularly the DS folks who specifically malabsorb fat soluble vitamins such as D) I know quite a few long time DS people (10-20+ years) and have seen very little problem as long as labs are regularly taken (annually usually) and responded to; however ignore those at your peril as weird things can happen if you don't. And that's with the DS, which is the fussiest of the procedures in that regard. With a sleeve, you are much more likely to get into trouble by something that you bring to the table - whether that be intrinsic or behavioral - but that is good reason to keep up with periodic lab checks just the same (my labs are a lot simpler than those of a typical DS or RNY person, as there is less that is needed to be monitored with the VSG.)
  22. Just ordered these from Amazon too. Had $10 coupon from FB feed from company as it’s not cheap. But totally worth it. I got assorted pack.

    Hypothyriodism and VSG

there's typically a big drop the first month (15-25 lbs for most of us - although there are outliers on either side of that), and then you'll settle in to a slower, steady weight loss. I lost 16 lbs the first month, then about 10 lbs a month until month 6 or 7, and then about 5-8 lbs a month until the year mark. After that it was about 2-3 lbs a month until I quit losing somewhere around month 18-20. of course, your rate of weight loss will depend on a lot of factors - starting BMI, age, gender, metabolic rate, activity level, how closely you stick to your program (the last two being the only factors you really have any control over). it seems to be slower than most of us would like - at least for a majority of us - so you may OK with that.

Surgery is in 3 days getting nervous

Good luck, my RNY was 8/10. I agree with the walking. The more you move around, the better you will feel. Also, one day at a time. Don’t be discouraged if you have a setback or a bad day. I’ve definitely had some not great days and struggle with fatigue and drinking enough liquids but give your body time to heal. This is a big, life/body changing ordeal! Be well!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Tomorrow marks 4 weeks since I had my bypass surgery. Over this period of time I've lost about 15 lbs, including a 10-day stall in the middle where I lost nothing a week after surgery. This corresponds to the 3-week stall, as I started shedding pounds at the beginning of my pre-op diet which was two weeks long. Glad that it's over- I've been steadily losing since then. Here's some stats: I've found that I still struggle to tolerate eating more than 2 oz of food at a time, so introducing vegetables back into my diet has been limited as I'm full up on my proteins. I average anywhere from 550-650 calories/day, which has usually included three 100-150 cal meals and a protein shake. Protein is about 55-70 grams/day. Go-tos have been ricotta or cottage cheese with salt & pepper, sliced ham/sliced prosciutto, smoked salmon with a little bit of lite cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning. Getting used to tossing those 1 or 2 bites of food left on my plate was hard at first, but became much easier after I stopped throwing it in the trash and switched to scraping it into my dogs bowl. Feels like I'm not letting good food go to waste! Mentally, I've had some tough days, but now I don't even think about eating to distract myself. Recently I've been unable to prepare a meal for myself without trepidation and discomfort. My stomach physically gurgles and turns as if I'm already going to experience rejection... has anyone else felt this? Its the worst when I'm heating up something hot... smelling food that used to appetize me causes this reaction. Usually as I begin to eat this feeling passes, but there is always some anxiety at the beginning. The most crazy thing about this is my mind still loves good food and cooking and I think about meals often, only to find that I'm repulsed by the idea of eating them. I've spoken to my therapist and hopefully we can find strategies to help, but so far this has been my primary source of concern post-op. I've been reading all of your posts and the comfort that they bring me as we go through this journey together is invaluable. Hoping for the best for everyone
