  1. Hi: I gained 9 pounds in the first 3 days post-op. It's just Fluid retention. I think it was day 5 or 6 when I started peeing like a sun of a gun. I dropped five pounds in one day because the fluid finally left. I was surprised with the weight gain, but my doctor told me it was very normal. As long as you follow the band rules you'll start to lose and keep losing. Best wishes to you newbie. I love my band and my new flat tummy. Sue
  2. Okay, I'm shocked and pretty much devastated when I got on my scale this morning and had gained 2 1/2 pounds. I'm moving beyond mushies into soft foods and am eating about 700 to 1000 calories per day, but am having trouble getting down all the liquid while planning arund the food. I had been down to 235.5 from a high of 265 at my sugical consult, but today I a back to 238. I know it seems a small amount in the big picture...but I just went through so much to get to this point in my lap band journey, it just pisses me off to see the scale going in the wrong direction!:cool2: Any words of wisdom from those of you who have been down this road and possibly experienced something similar??

    Anyone in Taunton, Ma?

I live in Whitman. I am starting over. Surgery years ago and weight gained back. I am a total couch potato. Would love walking partner. Sent from my SM-T320 using the BariatricPal App
  4. Sunta Water weight gain can fluctuate as much as five pounds. If you don't want a fill than you should get one. Follow your heart and stay on it the way you feel is working best for you. I know sometimes one gets the feeling that at some point a balance is met and you can do this.

    Pre Op

January 25, 2008 Went to Baptist today for pre-op workup for banding surgery scheduled for February 5, 2008 by Dr. Fernandez. Going through the motions and admitedly a little scared, a little nervous, and some apprehensions attached. Not really sure why. Speaking for myself, I can not begin to know others true thoughts or feelings about why they ahave opted for surgery, I only know this roller coaster, the perpetual cycle of weight loss, weight gain needs to end. I am looking forward to having a tool that will show no sympathy for the pychological need to eat. As I begin my journey of weight loss I look forward to the journey of self discovery.

    Hungry and not losing

Hi, Thanks to those who replied. I spoke to the nurse yesterday - it is her who takes care of the dietary side of things. She has ok-ed me to have soft foods with plenty of chewing, as the swelling around my stomach has obviously gone right down if I am hungry and able to tolerate soft solids. She has also said that she will do a fill on my next appointment (in 3 wks - 5 wks post op) so the future is looking brighter. RE: the weight gain. We have come to the conclusion that it may have been caused by the fact that the Optifast diet is designed to put your body into ketosis, and now that I am on mushies a lot of the easy mushies are quite high carbs. Hopefully my body should sort itself out soon and continue to lose. Thanks for your replies.

    2nd Fill... Too Tight?

Pain and only being able to tolerate liquids= TOO TIGHT! Don't chance it-get an unfill. Don't be afraid of a slight unfill. I won't guarantee a slight weight gain, but your health is more important. I struggled with a too tight band for months and ended up with a slipped band. I only have .6cc in now, but I have good restriction. It took a year to find that out. Go see your doc!

    Plateaus/gains 4 months post-op

I can gain and lose 5-7 lbs easily. Healthy foods or not sometimes you may be eating your maintenance/ gaining caloric intake, retaining water even needing a proper bowel movement. Track to see if there are aby discernable patterns early instead of waiting until it's a lot of weight gained that you will struggle to lose. Congratulations so far 💜
  10. Fat is essential to health. You shouldn't aim for no fat. Probably aim for about 25% - 30% calories from healthy fats. At 200 lbs. and 1500 max daily caloric intake you shouldn't be gaining. If you aren't underestimating your calories it's probably just water weight. Salt intake, heavy exercise, switching from a low carb to higher carb diet and increased glucagon storage, can all cause water weight gain. Log your food. Stop drinking with meals as it speeds stomach emptying and makes you hungrier faster. And remember liquid calories are very fattening so stay away from juice, soda, beer, etc. I wouldn't aim for less then 1000 calories a day as I did that a couple months back and now my hair loss has started back up again. As long as you're weighing yourself and tracking your food intake so you can stay on top of things, you should be fine. Best of luck.
  11. I was banded in 2012, had lost almost 75 lbs. at one point. I'm now at a total weight loss of 57 pounds. Ever since my surgery, I have never really done well with solids. I didn't wrooy about it at first cause I was losing but then, my weight plateaued and I gained a bit then plateaued again that I began to get concerned that about 90% of my diet is liquid. I got sick of Protein shakes so occasional ice cream shakes and sodas came into play (thus the weight gain). But, the main problem is...when I try to eat solids, even healthy solids, I am in the bathroom getting rid of it. Finally heard from the dr. that my body produces too much digestive mucous/juices too fast and attacks the food before it can get down to my stomach and be digested so the only option...my body tries to get rid of it. I miss healthy foods and am tired of not eating and having to leave the second half of meals in the bathroom. The second half of the issue is I eat/drink so very little...I cannot lose weight anymore. So I am stuck. My band has been filled and unfilled, filled and unfilled. So medically, I have a reason for insurance to pay for the band to come put but not necessarily to be converted to sleeve. My dr. is well known and he's affiliated with a center of excellence. They said that they have not had one insurance company pay for direct conversion. My dr's office says that in order to pay, all insurance require you to meet original parameters (bmi of 35 or more with problems or bmi of 40). Therefore, I will actually have to gain some weight (go backwards) in order to reach a bmi of 35 in order to have a sleeve. Plus then, I will need hope that they will think that my sleep apnea is bad enough that I can qualify. I have Blue Shield of California Ultimate PPO that we pay for ourselves(not through an employer). I haven't actually been turned down yet cause I have to submit for approval but before I can do that, I have to pay for and re-do my psych profile AGAIN. It is SOOO frustrating to think that the insurance company would make me meet ORIGINAL guidelines...including attending possible nutrition classes (I know what is involved and how to eat by now). I refuse to gain ALL my weight back to get back up to a BMI of 40. Ugh! Has anyone, who has this insurance, gone from lap band to sleeve as a direct conversion?? Has anyone had to meet the original guidelines. Any insight you have, I'd appreciate it. Thanks- Jen

    Gaining Weight Unbelievable!

I lose some weight and then I gain some weight. It fluctuates up and down and now I'm not stressing about it anymore unless it goes over 5 lbs weight gain. I am weighing myself at least 1 time per week at the least. I thought I was done losing and low and behold I lost a couple of pounds. That feels really good too.
  13. Yep! The weight gain progression there is so familiar it's a stereotype. And boy howdy is it familiar!
  14. I am 3 1/2 years post op, and did not really follow strict diet regulations, just ate smaller amounts of just about anything. In total, I had lost 106 lbs, but recently I have gained 35 lbs back. I am getting into bad habits of eating after suppertime again - always wanting to eat at night. Is it possible my pouch has stretched back out? Can I do something to make it smaller again?

I started my day as usual.. running like a loon cuz I cant scrape myself from the warm, cozy bed but thats besides the point... I made my 2 scambled eggs w/my hunk of mozzarella cheese on the side. Thank god for the dog.. I could NOT finish my eggs :scared2:. I had my beloved protein shake at my 930 break. It hit me like a ton of bricks.. I was FULL. Lunch was half of a turkey on wheat wrap... I made it with more lettuce than anything. I also had a yogurt. can we say FULL. At my 230 break I had my other protein shake and felt... whats the word I am looking for... FULL. I came home from work and finished my salad (leftover from yesterday) and I am FULL.:biggrin2: Full is not something I have felt before. Not without a lot of food being involved. I am so flippin excited about this whole fill thing. It almost motivated me to get off my ass and use my treadmill. I said ALMOST. Instead I am being a mouse-potato and comtemplating a long hot bath since I now have clearance to take one. I do have one side effect of the fill though. I'm burping like a mo-fo. In the fat-club meetings, they said gas and burping repeatedly but in my first 5 weeks, I had nearly none of that stuff. Today..BURP. Every few minutes... BURP. While it doesnt bother me so much, I have very stuffy coworkers that are not so amused (BURP). Hell, atleast I wasnt farting. I am FINALLY starting to feel as if this has all been worth it and my mood is obviously improving a bit. I still hate my coworkers (most of them) but now I am starting to like myself just a smidge anyway. I am going to take the long awaited HOT bath and I am going to stay in there til I run out of hot water and wrinkle like a prune. OOOOOO. I almost forgot to mention that I went down a size in undies. I can almost buy hanes-her-way in a color other than white. Whoo-freakin-whooo. I have been so looking forward to the day I get to buy some pink panties!!!! Hell, in a few more months, I might be back to wearing thongs. I gave up thongs years ago after my enormous weight gain. While they were still comfy.. I couldnt bear to see the fat girl in thongs. Not attractive. Walmart has/had tummy control thongs. SERIOUSLY. why bother controlling the tummy when the booty is jiggling uncontrollably???
  16. Hi! I was banded May 6th, 2008! I lost almost 100lbs. Then I got pregnant and I am now starting over. It was really hard to watch my weight go back back up during my pregnancy. Afterwards I did not want to go back and have my band refilled because of my weight gain! I gained around 70 lbs from my pregnancy. I had planned to loss more weight before I got pregnant but that was not God's plan. I am starting over and a littled discouraged when I add what I have now lost to what was lost and realizing that I would be almost at my ideal weight now!

    Pre-surgery

I am 51, 5'4" and weigh 220 lbs, most of my weight is right on my belly. I am a nurse and on my feet all day. I have controlled asthma, plantar fasciitis, arthritis in my ankles, yeast infections, abcesses and a bum left knee. I was skinny and athletic all my life even after 3 kids. However, at age 37, I left a bad marriage and was put on Paxil to help deal with anxiety and depression. In 6 months I ballooned to 170 lbs and then 4 years of university, while going through a 10 year expensive divorce battle, brought me up to 235 lbs. I have always been able to control my weight with diet and exercise prior to this weight gain, but nothing is working now. I have tried every type of diet and exercise program and yes, I might lose weight (one time up to 50 lbs) but immediately gain it back. Everybody in my family is obese. My mother has 12 siblings, my father 5 and everyone of them has metabolic syndrome so I know its just a matter of time. The writing is on the wall. After almost 15 years of yo-yo dieting, I have reached to point of giving up. I don't even see the point of watching what I eat and going to the gym anymore. Then after going to a surgeon who is connected to a weight loss practice, I started to get excited again. My BMI of 37 and lack of recognized comorbid conditions might not let me qualify for anything other than the band unless I am willing to pay out of pocket and even then I am not sure. I am tired of everyone telling me I look great, I carry my weight well, I could do it on my own and not have surgery etc. I attend a WLS presentation on Tuesday and can't wait.
  18. I saw too many people talking about complications and weight gain many years later after the bypass so I made sure to choose the sleeve instead. I only had 60-65 impossible to lose pounds to drop and I don't regret my decision. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Feeling Guilty!!

All of you are so inspiring. I have done the research and now trying to find the right facility - will go to the 3rd and last seminar this weekend, then make my choice. I am ready! I won't feel guilty or ashamed. I HAVE tried, many times, as have all of you. I have reached the point where only the most drastic of diets will help me lose weight, and the subsequent "maintenance" plan leads to weight gain almost immediately. At some point I just give up. Keep trying, but without real hope. Those of you in your 30s and 40s are in the perfect position. I am 65 - no lifethreatening co-morbidities (thank God), but very severe arthritis that limits me physically. As my doctor said - can't exercise without losing weight, can't lose weight without exercising... I have a very active, very supportive husband, but I feel like I am holding him back and keeping him from enjoying those things he loves to do. No more. I count my blessings that he is healthy, and I don't yet have the really bad stuff that comes with being overweight. We have a chance. Please don't feel guilty about saving your life - and don't allow ANYONE to make you feel that way. Many of you have kids to play with and raise. Kids take a lot of energy and strength. You are taking the steps to make sure you have what it takes to make life good for you and your kids. As for me - I'm making plans with my wonderful grandchildren! I wish all of you great success.

    Dehydration weight gain

@@skeewee You should be worried - dehydration is dangerous. If it is impacting your kidneys - then it's critical that you increase your fluids. The weight gain is not unusual - but it's not what you should be concerned about.
  22. I'm 6 weeks post op and have lost 30 pounds. However, today I gained back 3!! The doctor says it's dehydration and my GP said my kidneys aren't functioning at full capacity and to increase my Water intake. Should I be worried? Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App
  23. This is completely normal. The puréed foods stage usually coincides with the Third Week Stall that 99% of us have gone through. A little weight gain is normal right before a stall due to glycogen storage.
  24. Hi All! I have noticed that over the past 5 days or so, I have been gaining weight. This goes along with the beginning of weight training as well as an increase intake in salt. I must say that I have probably had more carbs than I should in the beginning but I am back on track. Do you think I should attribute this to muscle mass or the retention of Water due to the increased salt intake. Oh yeah, I am also 44 and could be starting menopause. I am just so frustrated. Any words of advice or motivation would definitely be appreciated.
  25. Hello. i'm new on here. just want to share my story to seek advice. when i was 15 back in 2008, i got the lap band. it was the worst experience ever. i was only loosing weight because i threw up EVERY SINGLE bit of food i ate. i lost 80lb very very quickly and i was extremely sick. my doctor said it shouldn't be happening, so instead of trying to fix it he drained my band. After a year i started to gain weight. In 2012 i was revised to the gastric sleeve. at this time, this procedure was brand new to my doctor, he hadn't done it before. I got it done quickly after the appointments with him, maybe 3 months. i was a slow loser for a whole year. it took me a year to lose 70 pounds, even eating what i thought was healthy (Protein first and some vegetables and brown rice, wha i was taught). i wasn't never really taught about carbs at all, always just eat "whole grain everything but eat your protein first and you should be fine" none of the information that i learned now from the fb group. i got into my first relationship, went to the DR and was diagnosed with PCOS, like lots of girls are. I was put on birth control and as soon as i did my weight shit up. as it shot up and me not knowing why i threw myself into a mind change that i couldn't shake out. while working 2 jobs (13 hour days) i began to lose care about myself, and regained most my weight, shooting back up to 230. i hadn't noticed the weight gain for a while, either because i'd stopped weighing myself. last year i started to exercise and count my calories and lost 20 lbs. even continuing it again, i have not budged. does anyone have any advice? yes, i know that you need to diet with the sleeve. it wasn't till recently by following where i learned about macros and counting calories and Protein shakes. my mother recently got the sleeve procedure, and i was thinking of going to her doctor to discuss my options, because mine no longer takes my new insurance and he is a pediatric doctor. do you think he would help me, or just toss me to a nutritionist? thanks.
