    I put blueberries and natural PB on a rice cake OMG! But for a "healthier" less calorie PB. Try mixing 1 bottle of vanilla Fairlife protein shake and 8oz container of PB2 (powder PD) mix together OMG! 72ish calories for 2 tbls and 9g protein!
  2. Tired, sore and physically/mentally drained.. but happy you did it. It made me feel hopeful that finally I was going to be healthy. You can also expect to be over whelmed even if you've done your research..its a complete change in your routine; constant water sips, small healthy protein meal stages and preparing each meal for those stages...lots of adjustments to your new life. You've got this!
  3. My bariatric team and GP both suggested it when I hit a three month stall and was becoming discouraged and angry. I was prescribed Ozempic and it broke my stall the first week! I've lost 10lbs in one month so my stall is over. I stuck to my "diet" plan the entire time so some might just say it was nothing more than my stall finally ending, who knows? I receive the compounded version with B12 and its $120.00 a month without using my insurance (I didn't want to go through the hassle of pre authorization). So, its a possible option for you. I've had no side effects as of yet, I'm starting on my second month with a higher dose so I can't speak on the head cadence beat of the drum to EAT yet, perhaps its diminished a bit and my hunger has quieted. Your best bet is talk to your doctor they'll know what's best for you and it can't hurt to ask. I hope this helps. Good luck!
  4. hi all, I posted this in the pre op forum for June buddies, but thought I'd also post it here in case it helps anyone. Here's my experience so far after getting the Gastric Sleeve procedure on 13th June 2024... Immediately after surgery It was pretty rough for me, I woke up in a lot of pain, so much so that the nurses had to give me 30mg morphine for the pain. I was in a recovery room for the first 24 hours (standard procedure for the private hospital in the UK i went through) After the initial 24hrs I was moved back to my room where I felt a lot better. Even able to eat an ice pop and a small cup of Tomato Soup (sipping of course) and sipping Water every 5-10 mins. Week 1-2 I quickly moved onto the liquids phase, in which I must have taken in around 2-300 cals per day through Protein Shakes and watery Soups. I must admin this phase was the hardest for me, managing the pain meds as well as trying to drink as much liquids as I could in a day. It just so happened there was an international football (soccer) tournament on in Europe in my first 2 weeks' recovery so was engrossed in that! I also started walking 1 mile per day and upping that to almost 2 miles by the end of it. My weight loss was drastic in this phase but my word I was lethargic/got tired v easily and not up for doing much. Week 3-4 Puree stage - finally I felt I was able to get some proper food in me, and a few days after starting this phase, my weight slowed right down - the dreaded (but expected) 3 week plateau kicked in. I went around a week and a bit without any weight loss, despite me sticking to the recommended diet. I am not going to sugar coat this, it was a bit disappointing standing on those scales after a week, but I knew this would happen so meh I guess. Still walking 2 miles per day during this phase and now feeling I have a lot more energy. Week 5-6 Week 5 started with me starting to lose a pound every 2 days or so, so my body seems like it has adjusted to the inro of more foods for the 'soft foods' stage. I also started back at the gym doing some cardio work on top of my walks, and oh boy I have so much more energy for it! I am now around half way through week 6 and had my first appointment with my nutritionist and he is blown away by the progress I have made/am making. He gave me further chewing tips to make sure I am not overeating as I have been sick a couple of times when I've eaten too quickly and not realised I'm full/satisfied. He is now happy for me to start introducing more fibred meats and more complex foods, like a little Pasta and a little bit of rice, to test the waters. Struggles so far: Reminding myself I have a new stomach not eating what family members are eating e.g. Sunday dinner Eating too fast resulting in vomiting Extra attention from people who have noticed a loss in weight (47lbs and counting since pre-op liver diet). Since I've been overweight most of my adult life, I carried a lot of shame internally, so its in my nature not to talk about myself/get photos taken etc Wins so far Losing a lot of weight and all the benefits that go with it. Being more present with my family. Having the energy to do everything they want to do (I have a wife and 2 kids, girl 11, boy 7) Clothes! I have dropped from XXXL to XL already. Which was a surprise when I packed to go to a 5 day getaway with my fam in week 5 Mental health - the mental benefits come as such a relief. I no longer feel down about my weight (although I know I still have a ways to go) Confidence - generally just feel I can be more myself - hopefully some here will resonate with this. Would be great to hear of your experiences so far, especially if you had your procedure in April/May/June/July!

  6. I'm having surgery on Thursday, and I'm on a modified liquid diet. According to the nurse and the paperwork, I need to get 70-80g of protein and 64 oz of fluid a day and I'm allowed 1 meal a day (3oz of meat and 1c raw or ¹/2 c cooked veg) all the way up until 6 hours before surgery. This seems odd to me. They are cutting into my intestines. If i have eaten 6 hours before won't there still be food in my guts? I want to have the best outcome possible and am thinking of doing all liquid starting tomorrow night.

    Wearing them now 😁. Fitted tops of course. Wear them around the house in winter with sweaters and cardigans. I secretly love (not so secret now!) seeing my skinny legs reflected in my glass doors. Like you, @SleeveToBypass2023, it took a while to accept the skinny, non thigh rubbing kegs were mine, but now it’s good motivation to stay on track. Have a wonderful mini break in London @MrsFitz. Just think next time you visit, you may not need your scooter & you’ll have many more. wardrobe options. Yay!
  9. I have severe reactive hypoglycemia my blood sugar goes up over 220 even with even a protein shake then 1-2 hours later drops dramatically it has dropped as low as 38. With blood sugar I slow down and appear confused, but no pain. Dumping I am sweating and doubled up in pain. Luckily I don’t get dumping often.

    Premier or fairlife??

    Honestly, I like both. They both taste great. BUT...while Fairlife has more protein, it's harder to find and quite expensive. However, it tastes absolutely delicious. Premier has more flavor choices, is easy to find, is cheaper, and tastes really, REALLY good. Still gives a good amount of protein. So I like both, and I mad sure to have both.

I did 2 things preop that helped immensely: 1) this may sound weird but i guessed i’d be in a little pain from the incisions so a couple of days before going into the clinic i move everything i figured i’d need in the first week post up to middle shelves in my kitchen/fridge : cups, scales, protein shakes and powders etc. And thank god i did because i had abdominal muscle pain (like i’d done 10000 crunches) and was told not to bend down for a while. 2) i wrote out « meal » plans from what my dietician provided in order to clearly see what time of day i’d eat (protein shakes) and drink (water). I’m the kind of person who needs a set plan that’s clear and that i can follow because i was lost the first few days. I wrote out 4 weeks of meal plans and i varied the shakes and purées and soups so i didn’t get sick of one specific one (never ate the same one 2 meals in a row and alternated with the next day). Not sure it actually helped my experience but it did help me see clearly mentally 🤣

    Fairlife is soooooo good! BUT so expensive so I stick to premier protein. With the occasional fairlife to make "desserts" lol

    Vomiting for hours after food

    Oh my I am so sorry this is happening to you. I had at least 6 months of this, day in, day out. They tested me for a stricture but found my stitch line was swollen and inflamed and although I could swallow liquids slowly, solids were difficult. Now I still take Lansoprazole twice a day and antacid when I need it. It sucks to be the 1% that has difficulties. I found that artificial sugars, some protein substitutes, rich meats and iron in the vitamins were not for me. I didn't reach my liquid or protein goals but my team were sympathetic and monitored me. I was told to focus on drinking. I tried to eat 6 - 8 tiny meals a day. Every time I had a day of vomiting I would go back a step to liquids. I had a lot of thin soups, tiny slivers of cheese and milk. I tried to eat as clean as I could which wasn't hard with the tiny little amounts of food I could eat. I am occasionally sick now but its because I overeat, forget not to eat grape skins or eat too fast. Now I just give my stomach a days rest and continue. I am used to the feeling of pre vomit and I will usually deal with it. For some reason a popsicle sometimes works
  14. Thanks. I am actually looking at my book now and it lists regular caffeinated or decaf beverages on the clear liquid diet which is days one and two post op. I knew I was offered coffee in the hospital for my sleeve but wasn’t sure if it was decaf or regular because I don’t drink it unless its loaded with other stuff. I was allowed when I asked pretty early out to have caffeinated protein shakes but didn’t remember exactly when that was. I know that a lot of doctors disagree on this toplc but apparently I am allowed to have it from day one. Ironically it is NOT listed as a drink option on the liver shrink diet. Not sure why but I have an appointment with him today so I will be asking. I am totally weaned and didn’t have any this morning but I am dragging a bit. No headaches though knock on wood. I know that it’s always tough for me for any procedure to go without it even for the nothing after midnight that’s always required. If the procedure goes too late I wake up with a headache begging to drink the caffeine that I bring with me so I guess it’s better to just stay off of it or keep it to like one a day anyways at this point.

    I love MyProtein for powders. For shakes, I also like Ufit, Grenade and For Goodness Shakes. I hate protein bars. I've never found a good one.

    Thank you all for your advice - it has been really eye-opening to see that dumping isn't actually all that common in bypass patients. I remember in a leaflet given to me by my surgical team, it listed dumping as a 'common' side effect, so I was fully expecting it! I am going to introduce things slowly, with protein as suggested. And as @The Greater Fool has said, I do think sometimes it could pose as a bit of an educational experience for me if it happens!

    Vomiting for hours after food

    Oh you poor thing. Vomiting is the worst. Just throwing some ideas out there for you to consider. It’s not uncommon to develop some food intolerances (usually always temporarily) after surgery - lactose & sugar alcohols in artificial sweeteners being the most common (often in protein shakes). Could this be a possibility? It can be sensitivity to other foods or ingredients too. It’s not uncommon to develop spasming in the stomach & digestive tract after surgery. Again this is usually temporary but the body & mind can be unpredictable. My dad experienced chronic vomiting after chemo & his doctor explained that sometimes the body/mind thinks vomiting is a normal behaviour. It just takes time to break the habit. Don’t let your surgeon or support team brush you aside. Malnutritiion, dehydration are a possibility with vomiting like you’ve been experiencing.     A long story . . .

    You might have (temporarily) gotten lactose intolerance. Most medications have lactose as a binder and if you’re sensitive, look out! You’ve sure been through a lot! It’s only been a week so I guess you’re on liquids. I used OWYN shakes because there’s no lactose in them. Others on here turned me onto Fairlife milk and shakes, there’s no lactose there either and both are high in protein but less than 5gms carbs. Who’s at home with you now?

    HELP

    I think it was Dr Matthew Weiner that said that blending fruit made it lose some of its nutrition. That being said, I was allowed to have them if they were homemade or made from simple ingredients. If you like them I really reccomend a nutra bullet. They are so simple to make at home. If you do buy it out somewhere consider a child size if they have one. You would be surprised how filling they are plus the calories can add up pretty quick in the larger ones. Tropical Smoothie Cafe has a kids Jetty Junior that is 12oz strawberry and banana which is 190 calories (80 if they make it with Splenda). They have their nutrition info for all their smoothies online. Of course there is not any protein in it. They have whey protein powder as an add in It says 110 calories for 16 grams. Just watch them when they make it if you ask for Splenda. For some reason they tend to forget by the time they get to that part.

    Depends on the type of smoothie. One you make yourself with protein powder, milk, yoghurt, a powdered flavour if you use plain yoghurt, a little allowed fruit & you control the ingredients - okay. But a purchased one I’d question. Check the nutritional value & ingredients of any you buy. I used to buy a yoghurt smoothie drink from the same company that made the high protein yoghurt I ate. The nutrient value was similar but with more protein (30+g) & more natural sugars (not added) from the milk added to the yoghurt to thin it to a drinkable consistency. Then I bought a different one but the added sugar content was so much higher & the protein content was very low. I used to buy them before I realised how easy it was make the yoghurt smoothie drink by simply blending the high protein yoghurt I liked with milk. What does your plan say? If it doesn’t say, check with your nutritionalist.

  22. A lot of peoples tastes change a bit post surgery. Usually it’s temporary but I’ve heard a lot of people say it about sweet stuff. Some people have to dilute the protein shakes with milk to make them palletable. Another trick if you like iced coffee would be to mix in some coffee if you are allowed regular or decaf. I usually take a big cup, dump in the whole shake and then add coffee to the top but you may want even less of the shake. I buy these Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee packets at Walmart that you can mix right into a bottled water so it’s already cold. It’s $4 for 6 of them but I only use half a bottle per day so it’s not that bad. If you remember to mix it at room temp and then refridgerate it you can get regular brew ones in Folgers for like a buck a box. I’m just not that organized. I have tried it though with the decaf and it works. You have to shake it and then go back to it a few times.

  25. The ready made Fairlife shakes have been my main source of protein and I’m having to remind myself I’m just 2 weeks out because I’ve felt so good until yesterday. I have tried cottage cheese and that didn’t settle very well and I love cottage cheese. I’m not giving up on it. I’m just very impatient. I did try ribeye steak last night…..I grilled a small portion then ground it in my meat grinder which pretty much pulverized it and grilled potato slices until very soft. I was able to eat a small portion with enough for probably 2 meals. I had not thought about refried beans. I will definitely give those a try. It’s quite difficult to have small meals during the day due to working in a busy cardiology clinic. I have lost a total of 22 lbs since my pre-op visit which was 3 wks before my surgery but I started the liquid diet 1 month before surgery.
