Thank you so much!! I do think about pre WLS and there are so many times where I would shove my face at work then go home and eat dinner and just not work out because I "will start next week" I do not do that. I track all my food, I will have nibbles here and there and then the weekend I indulge but I work out on Saturdays and stay active on Sundays. Ugh this journey is so weird! I have never been in maintenance so I know its going to take some getting used to. Again thank you for words! they mean alot! -

Thank you for posting this! This is very timely for me because I've just gotten back from vacation and am struggling. The kids are off school and underfoot. The house is a mess with things to be washed and put away from vacation. My routine is off and I'm not getting enough sleep. The fridge was empty when I got home and I lacked the energy to meal plan, so I now have a fridge of random food I picked up and hope I can turn into meals. We came home with way too many snack foods and sweets and now that they're in the house, the temptation is at an all-time high and my motivation to follow the rules and do what I know I need to do is feeling very low. -

I don't know if this is your issue or not, but one thing I've seen from others in a similar situation is that they still eat like fat people trying to diet. If that's you, you need to completely change your mindset. Your job at this point is to GAIN weight, so dietary fat and carbs are your friends. A key change would be to look for and eat more calorie dense foods like rice, potatoes, peanut butter, full fat dairy, etc. If you eat meat, look for fatty meat, not lean cuts. Calories are your friends right now. Just my .02. -

What you described; occasionally light headed when standing up...racing heart, all with different foods and quantities was what I was and still am going through - exactly as you described. As I posted before my cardiologist said its dumping, the Bariatric surgeon said dumping combined with low blood pressure and/or dehydrated for the dizzy aspect symptoms. I do notice and am more aware of the coalition of less water consumption = dizzy upon standing or just in general now. He did say to try to slow down eating as it might help. The issue I have is I don't have 30 mins to casually sit and eat my food all the time - to eat "aware" or "mind fully." Sometimes I'm lucky to just get my protein down! I will say that once I had both doctors associate it to dumping I paid more attention to it and when it is happening, after I eat I can associate it directly to eating now. So I'm going to say they were right - its dumping. Good luck with the cardiologist. -
are you able to go to a restaurant or other food-focused venue without feeling the need to eat beyond your limits? you are right, social events are almost always centred around food and drink..i learned early on that i enjoyed the company more than the food back during my weight loss phase (i'm 5+ years out now and i have to say i like the food just as much as the company, lol...but i digress...). if you can be around food and other eating said food without causing you angst, then i say just go to that restaurant or bar or party or whatever and enjoy your friends and loved ones. they can stuff themselves... you don't have to join in. if being around food is too much of a temptation for you, how about a hike, or a dance class/exercise class, the theatre, a spa day, afternoon at the beach, pottery/painting/kayaking/karaoke/climbing/omg the possiblities are endless! HOWEVER, i will say that even with the aforementioned activities, people are eventually gonna get hungry/thirsty and want to go somewhere or pick up something to eat, and then you are back where you are started. personally, i would push for trying to train yourself to be around food and not go to town, as its probably easier (and more realistic) to adjust yourself vs. adjusting everyone around you.. *HAPPY BIRTHDAY* in advance! hope you figure out a way to enjoy your day!!!

What To Do When Food Gets Stuck?

I am 88 years old and am thinking of getting my band removed. My band was installed on 8/2008. In the beginning no problems but now I wind up in ER for removal of stuck food. I think the band has shifted over the years as I just completed an upper GI series, and my esophagus looked okay. Now wondering about the risk at my age. I will discuss with my cardiologist. So sorry to hear so many have had problems with the band. that is why they no longer recommend it. If you can have it removed to avoid trips to the ER All the best to you all. Herb -

Okay so look at the macros and see if this fits your plan. It may be a little high in carbs for some if you’re not very active but this recipe is probably my favorite out of my two weeks if soft foods so I thought I would share. It’s called south of the border chicken chili from the McCormick website. I added onions and garlic because I like them in everything but this is super simple and high protein. You may want to leave out the corn and do more beans or tomatoes if your tummy is still fussy but I haven’t had any issues with anything and I’m allowed to start incorporating more foods so I’m having it with the corn and so far so good 🤞 My pot made a little over 7 one cup servings which Baritastic calculated at 25g of protein (12.5 if you can only do a half cup) and 26g carbs (but part of that was the onions). I needed more protein for the day so I opted for the shredded cheese on top. Anyways, it’s chicken, bell pepper, white and black beans, canned tomato and corn with a seasoning pack from McCormick. So I've been at my goal weight, but I'm still losing weight. I'm trying my best to maintain it and it's becoming difficult to do so. How do I healthily stay at the weight I'm at? I've tried the steps I found online like having more smaller meals throughout the day or adding more calories, but I don't have the appetite to do so and clearly can't eat as much as I used to due to the surgery. Would high protein foods work despite it being low in calories? Has anyone else run into this unexpected predicament? Or know of some good advice?

not all surgeons require pre-op diets, but even those who don't will require a day or two of liquids only right before surgery so you don't have any food in your G/I tract. -

It definitely does have a little bit of a stall around that point - I was in the same place around then, and I have finally started losing a bit more now. That is amazing you are getting the exercise in - that is something I desperately need to get more of. I am going to the gym maybe once a week, but my energy levels are so low due to me struggling to get food in 😅 I shall maybe just go and try to do some light cardio rather than weights! -
I never look at the scale at home. The only time I get weighed is at a doctor's and periodically, at my gym, where they use one of those impedance machines that distinguishes fat, muscle and skeletal mass. Instead of worrying, just stick to whatever program you are following---my appetite was severely diminished after surgery, I had one instance of the foamies early on, and I learned pretty quickly that eating the wrong food or too much to fast led to gastro-distress. I don't know how much exercise you are getting. That has been a big factor for me. I work with a trainer, and it isn't just building muscle, but a lot of attention was paid to balance-- Learning how to breathe is something I'm still working on- sounds stupid but makes a huge difference in your stamina. Walk. A lot. I wasn't a food junkie but like to eat. I'm now constrained, but the trade-offs are worth it. Give it time. If you are persistent and consistent, you will be rewarded--- I slug down a 30 G protein drink, work out, hit another 30 G protein drink, a light lunch, a dinner primarily of protein and veggies. There's a certain amount of positive reinforcement that comes from success. But you should not measure your success by the scale or any other external measure. Overall, I feel better, am far more ambulatory and that alone allows me to capitalize on the surgery--and that's where the self-reinforcement comes in. I would have been out of breath after a couple of blocks walk. Now, I can go miles and feel good while doing it.

Yes, I think it is just a case that maybe the wrong word was used which is unhelpful and can cause doubt and anxiousness. Maybe the therapist is just tying to get the point across to not let food control you going forward and not to just focus on being able to eat what you want again but do the steps to get to the right mindset so you get the best life out of the surgery.

Omg. I so wish my grocery had those ingredients now. You just reminded me. There is a store like 45 minutes from me that has the fresh zucchini spirals and they even have a deli that makes their own Turkey meatballs that were really tasty. I’m sure that the marinara is not the greatest nutrition wise and they could’ve added a bunch of crap to the meatballs because they don’t list the nutrition label on prepared food in the deli. I could inquire to see if they have it, but I wasn’t strictly counting anything then. Anyways, this was a meal that i actually enjoyed. And I never really thought about how convenient it is considering. I really need to start shopping there more often. The prices are a little high but the quality and variety of healthier choices is 100 times better than the stores that are right down the street from me. It’s kinda sad that I will make that trip for other things without hesitation, even restaurant food but I don’t tend to drive that far for healthy food. Something to really think about 🤔 Do you mind sharing the brand of your sugar free spaghetti sauce? Are the meatballs frozen? Is there a particular one you prefer?! This is definitely something I am putting on my list!! -

Love this ..as I'm comming up on 5 months post op...im trying to decide how I would like to move ahead with the "maintenance" part of life. Maintaining a food lifestyle that I enjoy for life. I haven't yet decided on how that will look. It's good to hear your thoughts as it gives me insight on how I will maybe manage further down the line. As of now I don't even know what bread, or mash potatoes or any of the comforts I once enjoyed taste like 😂😂😂 anymore . -

Hey! I hope you are doing well. Sounds like this time around was a bit more painful for you. I don't blame you staying an extra day for the relief - I wasn't even told there was toradol in my chart until the day of my discharge, they had only offered me 5mg oxycodone. It did the truck, but I also noticed that they totally dropped my Chantix while I was in the hospital. I had a different nurse on day 3 in the hospital and he was the first one who asked me which pain med I wanted. It was so nice to get that relief for the two hour ride home. I'm getting pretty tired of this sip-sip every 15 minutes but I'm determined to get my protein and water in. I have had a bit of heartburn but mainly it's just trying to get the fluids to hit bottom. I gently stretch while standing, jiggle my belly from underneath as long as it doesn't cause pain, roll my shoulders back, walk, etc. Each burp is a relief but at least it's getting a little easier. I'm taking the Pepcid, nausea med, etc but it just seems like I can't do anything but focus on what to try to put in my belly next. I know this shall pass, but oof! Anyone else feeling it? I don't get to go to purees for another week and two weeks of that before mechanical soft. I'm still on room temperature everything as well. -

I felt hunger from the first week post op, it never disappeared. In fact I was starving on the first week of liquids. at 10+ months post op some days I feel ravenous (especially on days I lift very heavy) and some days I'm not interested in eating. How did/do you cope? To be very honest the first week is very hard and generally the first 6 weeks are tough not gonna lie. I hated eating soups and mushy foods. I hated the feeling of my restriction but what made it all worth it was the progress I witnessed on a daily basis. The pounds were melting off and I was so ecstatic about that. Do you have/need coping mechanisms in place- if so what? I traveled. That really helped, I traveled at 3 weeks post op, 3 months post op, 6 months and 8 months post op. I went back to exercising and took up Pilates. I regularly checked in with a friend who's had VSG before me. All these things helped me cope plus the weight melting off!! Does it get easier? It really does. You will look and feel better, you will re-learn how to eat and it'll be okay. Do you have any helpful advice for a newbie like me? Take it one day at a time. Don't be too hard on yourself. Don't compare yourself or your progress to anyone. The first few months are a gift, use them but also free your mind of food anxiety and accept that you are not perfect and you will make mistakes and learn from them. Oh and indulge in movement you enjoy (it makes a big difference, physically and mentally). -
I'm hoping my nutritionist can come up with many things to eat that won't get boring and dull then. I guess I'll have a lot of questions on the 30th about my appetite afterwards for the nurse and nutritionist. I'm hoping that the hunger will go away forever or at least will be manageable because I'd like to at least stay around 300 pounds at the very least. I weigh almost 450 now so a loss of 150 pounds would make a huge difference. If I can keep it off that is. I'm hoping I can find a bunch of goof food to eat so that I don't go back to the diet I'm eating now. That or I'll at least be able to burn it all off.

When I started eating solid foods, I noticed I gain weight a few pounds in the first couple of months. This can happen as your body adjusts to a new diet. It's important to watch how your body responds and make changes to your eating and exercise habits if needed. Everyone is different, so it's important to find what works best for you.

Hello 👋 everyone! Finally day 14 post op. I’m feeling so much better. I did have dumping because I went in too much on ice cream and had almost 3 oz versus 1oz. Nothing too bad but lesson learned. I’m so excited for purée! I’ve started with baby food today and working into scramble egg white tomorrow with feta or cottage cheese. What are your recommendations for purée? -
Dear Community, I am 5 days Post Operation (I live in Berlin, Germany) I believe the proper translation is the Gatsric Sleeve (75% Stomach is removed). Although things are going much better than expected post surgery more uncomfortable than pain, and I am not excessively hungry or thinking of food, I know what is to come will be a life changing situation. I feel very emotinal of the unknown and the worry about life quality with my family and friends where so much has been me as a provider of space where the love of food at gatherings brings people together and I enjoy cooking, trying new flavors and of course eating that is obvious! It has always been a part of my identity this side but this emotional element is not a fear of myself eating too little or not healthy or yummy enough because that will continue be a part of my cooking. But maybe there are a few out there who felt similar but found a great way to not lose the joy? the celebration? I would be very grateful for opinions thank you!

Hi Everyone I am in desperate need of tips on how to take my vitamins. I have tried 4 different brands that my surgery office prescribes (i live in Europe so may not have the same brands as other areas). They are all bariatric patient specific vitamins. I have also tried different formats of the vitamins: powder/ gel capsule/ hard pill … neutral or flavoured. And i just can’t take them. Every time i swallow a pill it feels stuck inside my throat and makes me cough and splutter and i feel it stuck for ages. When i break open the capsules and pour the powder over something i gag so badly because of the taste that it makes me feel sick for hours. The powder that you mix in a a drink is so disgusting that i heave when i try to force it down I do take them with food during a meal but it puts me completely off my food once i struggle to get them down. I don’t know what to do anymore - does anyone have any ideas or tips on what i can do or on any vitamin brands available in Europe that have the correct composition for vsg patients ? I need a high iron supplement due to genetic form of anemia. 🙏🙏🙏

Glad to hear you got cleared for full Liquids. If I was allowed to do that with the chunks I wasn’t told. They just said specifically cream of chicken and to strain out the chunks. I’m sure it will be a little easier with some variety at least. I get to do soft foods starting the 2nd. I remember that stage making me pretty anxious with my sleeve. I think it will be even worse this time without the stomach part to slow me down. Anyways, hang in there. It goes surprisingly quick. -
My gastric sleeve which I just had surgery in April I would say is super restrictive. Now some other bariatric groups I am in they expressed concerns because they felt they could still eat a lot of food. A lot of this journey is mental and I am unsure if those who were saying they felt they could eat more than they should was still battling the mental aspect of surgery. It's the best thing you could do. It's a chance to start anew.

Hi everyone! I’ll be officially one month tomorrow!! I’m so excited! So even though it’s “general food time” I’m still sticking to soft for now. I’m still about 2-3 oz per meal every 3 hrs. I figured it’s best to take it slow and hear out my body that rush this journey. I can finally intake a liter of water! It’s been great 😊 going back to the gym feeling so light. I’m already starting to feel small in some of the clothes I wear. -
Vomiting post gastric bypass surgery

The only time I vomited post revision was when I had a stricture. It was after every meal and I wasn’t over eating so that was a big clue that something was not right. Are you over capacity when this happens, just certain foods or every time?
