  1. Hello, I was wondering if you have done a little research on eating keto and lowering blood sugars. I really like the Dr. that started Dietdoctor.com. there is great information and videos. To see the videos, you do need to purchase a subscription at 9.00 dollars a month. However, you can do a one month free trial, just put in your phone the date you started, so you can cancel before you are charged. I kept the subscription because I find the videos informative. BTW, you can get the recipes free of charge. He doesn't charge for those. Good luck on your journey. PS. I had to find a Dr. that agreed to this lifestyle . You are eating whole fresh non packaged foods but still some Drs. do not agree. I do drink the bariatric hot chocolate however. It's my sinful pleasure, but low carb. How do I cut the candy?

You can make your own sugar free gummie bear candy out of sf gelatin. And you can flavor it with essential oils, liquid stevia, and add citric acid to make them like sour patch. Then you start stepping down from the candy. But you will likely need to replace the cals with some other source cuz otherwise you will likely start losing again. Also, you can make keto candy like fat bombs with healthy oils/fats + cacao powder, nut butters etc. They add up VERY quickly. But they are usually more satiating. SF peanut butter cups are the bomb. You can also try getting delicious protein bars, cutting them in 8 pieces then freezing them. Pop them like a candy bite. I think you're in a pretty special situation because of your super endurance exercise. I think @Healthy_life2 and @BigViffer could help you with this. They are both power athletes and have to eat in a method to keep their cals high enough for training. Congrats on your losses. The candy is an addiction. Addiction to sugar is as powerful as heroine addiction. I'd also see your doc/RD and ask for help. They may have a temporary medication that can help you with cravings as you try to detox.

    Ketosis - getting desperate...

Patience grasshoppah! I agree with Tea. Go back to do one thing at a time. Go back to your old way of eating LC or Keto or whatever you choose to call it. You are likely hungry with it cuz you're keeping fats pretty low. Maybe up your fats and see if it helps with satiety? But when I say "up" them, I'm not talking fat bombs or desserts, or lots of added dietary fat. I'm talking about: 1. Switch from boneless skinless breasts to breasts with the skin. Or switch to thighs. Or eat beef pot roast. Or eat pork shoulder. These cuts naturally have more fat in the meat and so have more calories and are more satiating. Also if you are only eating 2oz per meal (by weight) of protein, try eating 3oz. if you are eating 3oz per meal, try eating 4oz. until you hit your daily protein goal. If you hit your goal easily and go over on protein...then you may need to look at re-apportioning your protein/veggie serving size to fit your macros. I'd add a small salad with vinaigrette to each meal if that happened. I rarely eat more than 3oz per meal cuz I don't need the extra protein. 2. Eat 1-2oz by weight of al dente veggies. Add 1tsp of fat to them (avo oil, evoo, coconut oil, butter, ghee, animal fat) or add up to 1oz avocado, or 1/2oz by weight of nuts/seeds. 3. Eat 3 meals per day. Try not to snack. If you are hungry allow a snack composed of these (choose one): a. String Cheese b. Hard Boiled Egg c. 1oz dense dry protein. This will put you in ketosis big time by the end of about 4 days. You will lose 2-4lbs of water from it as your liver dumps glycogen and the attached molecules of water it holds. Then do that for a month and don't worry about it. That's your new diet. As your pouch matures, you will need to revise it to add more fat/calories to your day, or continue to choose more fat dense meats/dishes. If you are struggling with weight loss, I would stick to this and I would avoid calorie dense complex meals such as casseroles, stews, gooey, cheesy stuff. I'd stick to clean meats, healthy fats, al dente veggies. Hope that helps! Congrats on your losses!!!!! Don't stress, don't worry! For me eating in maintenance is longer than 2months with no loss on the scale or by the tape measure. For me a stall is 3 weeks without a change on the scale or by the tape measure. Other people have different definitions.
  4. I used to put tiny slivers of hard cheese in my mouth and waited till it disappeared. My keto mouth thought it was delightful

  6. I finally used Keto Diet and also, that my allergies had flared up. Anyone who has known me very l9ng would know I have fought quite a battle with them in the past. One semi- friend told me if I had completed my series of allergy shots, I wouldn't have any problems! The fact that when I was terminated from my job and lost that insurance, I had no money to continue, did not enter into her mind. Perhaps she thought my pretty face would be enough payment. So to her I let my allergist take the blame instead of my bariatric surgeon. Oh if she had been a nicer type I MIGHT have told her the truth. There are people I have been totally honest with but MY LIFE-MY BUSINESS - if you are not paying for it, you are not required to KNOW ANYTHING! As Edith Anne on Laugh- in and Manny Yocum from Little Abner have said" I HAS SPOKEN!"

    Life after keto

That's exactly how i eat too!! I did keto for a few months just as an experiment to see if it really works and it does, but i love fruit, and everything else you mentioned, and overall i just feel better when i eat the way i was before (even if the weight loss is slower) Plus the idea of cutting out multiple healthy food groups forever seems like i might have deficiency issues later on with certain nutrients.
  8. Mind you I haven't had surgery yet so if these go against post-op rules or anything, I'm here to learn about it. My store was out of Premier Protein vanilla, but these were right next door on the shelf so I decided, heck, why not see if they suck or not. These shakes are VERY VERY tasty, folks. Equally as tasty as Premier (if you like Premier). By themselves and in my coffee, holy cow Both the vanilla and the chocolate. They claim to have 30g of protein in 11oz....now, the TYPE of protein might be the kicker. It's not whey protein isolate. **FYI** Fellow Keto Peeps (if there are any here): If you're eating strict ketogenic (i.e. Ketovangelist style), these shakes are NOT "keto legal" Dirty Ketonians, should be fine LCHF/Atkins - obviously

    Fighting the Negativity

So glad I'm not the only one being slammed with keto talk! Like I said, it's great for her and I'm happy she's doing it but the conversation is very stale at this point!

    Fighting the Negativity

I think something is wrong with her for making someone else feel like there is something wrong with them. I think you know your body best and only you can and should do what’s best for you.. I have little to no support with the exception of my fiancé supporting.. I have family and friends telling me that I should just workout because I’ve lost 31 lbs on my own(not keto diet) just low fat low carb and high protein diet.. they don’t understand that it’s not about them and that it’s not about just losing weight (there’s a lot of reasons ) everyone’s reason is different (personally, I have been limited to doing thing with my daughter) I’d like to sit on the floor with her and play games , go on field trips with her at school..etc.. the list goes on. I’ve already told a couple people to suck me sideways and keep their stupid comments to themselves. So with that being said? .. no, I don’t think there is anything wrong with you. That lady needs to just shut up and find something better to do with herself than to put others down.

    K I S S

I never drove a car. Never. Ever in my life. Not for 18 years. And then there was the day when I drove a car for the first time. I never stented a carotid artery. Never. Ever in my life. Not for 41 years. And then there was the day when I did it for the first time. So the answer to your question is: If you never learnt good food habits in the fist place - learn to have them now! This is not about magic! This is about learning new skills by practicing them! Practicing them over and over and over and OVER again, until they feel like second nature to your brain. Honestly? Some people have to learn the hard way that this particular way didn't work for them. You can provide help/guidance along the way but in the end people choose their own way and that is not always the way that works out fine. Some people need a second chance because they messed up first. If these people are honest with themselves they should realize that they made mistakes along the way and now they have a chance to do it in another way. If they choose to make the same mistakes... well, not everyone will be successful. In the end it's just as simple as that. What rubs me the wrong way is that so many people seem to come back with a regain after they were quite successful and are on their way to make the same mistakes again, fueled by the "advice" to "go back to basics" and to "try harder". And because they were so successfully losing once they try to do the same thing they did back then - not realizing that they're making the same mistakes by going back to these same old strategies that didn't work in the first place for them. You're gung-ho about it, you eat low carb/lowfat/keto/lowcalorie/whateverrocksyourboat, you go to the gym five times a week, you follow all these fancy rules, you do this, you do that and more and then... something happens, whatever that something might be for this person and BOOM - things go down the drain. And what are you going to do then? Trying again to live a lifestyle that's obviously not going to make you happy? Or are you taking a leap of faith and try something different?
  12. I’m feeling a little depressed of lately and have been eating my emotions away.. 13. LOVE this! So what did you say when the guy said that in the full room? Were you embarrassed or did you own it? Oh, I "get" anonymity! Ok, we'll let you slide on pics of the body parts ROFLMAO! My sissies and niece who are super supportive keep calling me skinny minny and the incredible shrinking woman. They tell me how proud they are of me. But no one else has commented until yesterday. My PCP came in and apologized for entering the wrong room. He said he didn't recognize me until he looked down at my chart. LOL. That felt good! So I'm loosely letting my whole carbs fall somewhere between 30 and 40g right now. They net out to anywhere from about 20g net to 30g net. I'm not averse to pushing them up to 60g per day total carbs. I don't want to add a lot of sugar into my life even in the form of naturally occurring ones because I feel better without them. I'm definitely still in ketosis. My sugars are generally falling less than 15g total for the day. I don't know the study. Will have to look it up. But my question would be whether the study is a good one. Are they using newly ketogenic peeps? Or are they using people who've been keto adapted for a long time? It can take up to 3-6months of continual keto to become completely keto adapted. And the brain chemistry and body chemistry of those folks is completely different than in other folks specifically because the amounts and types of different ketones circulating. Brains actually run preferentially and "better" on ketones rather than glucose as fuel--or so MANY studies support. A brain is either going to be a sugar burner or a fat burner. If it's a sugar burner, it has the BARE minimum need of about 60g of carbs per day baseline. If it's a completely adapted fat burner, it has theoretically, unlimited supply of the specific ketones it needs to run very precisely. Any sugars needed to maintain the body are adequately provided for by gluconeogenesis that comes from dietary protein (in the presence of adequate protein intake) or in breaking down muscle in the absense of adequate dietary protein. A ketogenic diet is actually a muscle-sparing diet. But, I do believe that we as post ops are suffering silent lows, or even lower than our usual bgs due to small volume of food and small amounts of carbs in general. I am terribly flash irritable. Not grumpy all day. But little things make me flash. That has gotten better this week--extremely so--since I upped my calories to between 700-800. So that's why I'm thinking it's low bgs. My lowest readings have historically been in the late afternoon. And that is when I have the greatest propensity towards hanger. Otherwise, I'm pretty mellow really.

    Regret

Ok, this is very important!!! Having the certainty that there is an "end" to the suffering is very critical. I'm pre-surg, but have been through really huge reconstruction surgeries on my boobs/back after a double mastectomy. And it hurt so badly, the only way I knew I could do it was because I knew that each day out would/should be better than the one before and that there would come a day when the suckage would be over. We can get through anything for a short time, especially if the reward is great. So I loved the idea someone said about thinking about all the good things coming in your future, as you endure each day and check that day off your list! Right?! Also, I have written this before, but my nephew is a surgeon and told me that any time you go in and mess with the gut (even just touching or moving it), you will deal with post-op transient depression. It releases hormones that jack with your mood cuz it's part of the gut/brain axis. Then too, you're not fully (most of us) keto adapted, so your mood is further affected by having little to no food, you're getting over anesthesia, you're bloated from IV fluids, not sleeping well, and in pain. It's the perfect storm for fatigue, crying jags, and daily naps. Treat yourself gently and with love. Nap when you feel like it. Move slowly. Take it one step at a time and don't forget to breath! ((hugs))

    ~December 2017 Sleevers~Updates

Hey guys! I'm coming up on 3 months next week and feel good! I've been able to tolerate most things. I had a donut today actually and it kinda didn't sit well right after so I won't be doing that again anytime soon. My stats are pretty much accurate still. I stalled for a few days here and there especially when that time of the month sneaks around. I'm on a modified keto/low carb diet for the most part, high protein, at least 120oz of water daily, and 30 mins of cardio. Many people have said I already look "skinny", but I'm not even close to it. Hope you guys love your tool as much as I do!

How was your 5:2 day today?

Well I do believe that the keto means that it will send you into ketosis - the optimal state for burning fat. I know that when I did strict old school Atkins induction (1972 Atkins - which is essentially carbs at zero) I drop weight like crazy. Of course the first 10 lbs is always the burning up of glycogen stores, and the water they require. It is a difficult state to stay in for me - I managed it pre-op for two weeks (my surgeon has his patients do Atkins for liver shrinking, no liquid diets or anything like that. I lost about 14 lbs in those two weeks. The nutritionists at my surgeons office always say there are NO essential carbohydrates - our bodies will make what it needs from other macros. Interesting that the calculator says if yo have too much protein it can send you out of ketosis - probably not an issue if you don't have a lot of excess adipose tissue to burn. I just think it might be interesting to try it and see how I fare - I know that this type of eating helps squash my sugar demons pretty effectively and I like the types of food - I have never tried to up the fat so much though, it has always been so protein focused, if the calories stay around 1200 it should be interesting to see how the scale responds and how I feel. I struggle with pretty severe eczema and allergies - getting the sugar and processed stuff down should hopefully help those issues.
  17. My surgery is also scheduled for 2/24. Pre-op diet for me starts this Thursday. I’m so tired of yo-yo dieting, fasting, low carb, high carb, low fat, keto, etc. Getting ready for a new start! Good luck for surgery. You got this. We got this!

    november sleeve

You can add my name to the slow down list... I have a feeling I know why, at least for myself. Surgery date: November 27th. (In week 5) Surgery weight: 247 current weight: 216 I was doing very well up until the week of Christmas when my Mom visited. I used her visit and the holiday as an excuse to eat whatever and however I wanted. I was following keto diet when I was on my prep diet and the 3 weeks post up leading up to Christmas and I was doing great! Now that I have reintroduced carbs back into my diet, I have not looked back since. The only thing I am looking back at is the rapid weight loss. Last week less than 4 pounds lost, and as for this week, I am currently +1 pound. I don't officially weigh in for the week until Monday morning, but I guess it is going to take either an actual gain or no weight lost week for me to kick myself in the butt again and get myself back on track. 😐😐😐 I don't know what to say other than its important to be honest with myself during this process, and the only thing that can effect my progress is my actions.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

The way I feel must be like the keto flu, then. I never tried the keto diet so I didn't experience it. My nutritionist did not mention I'd feel so yucky. It is good to hear that I may be going through a normal process, then. I DO have Netflix and am binging at night after work when the kids and hubby are eating dinner. Cooking would be too difficult right now!

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Glad to see everyone is doing so well I lost down to under 130 last April at the start of the pandemic. I’ve gained about 5-7 pounds and stay generally between 133-138. I hit 142 right after the holidays, and went strictly bari-keto with IF and now I’m sitting at 137. The first shot was when I dipped down below 130 and I feel like I look quite skeletal. The second shot is from late summer, and the 3rd shot is from a few weeks ago (I was probably 3-4 pounds “heavier” than I am currently.) Sorry I’ve been gone for so long, but it’s been a rough last year and unfortunately the frenetic pace isn’t slowing down for me. I’ve had 2 days off since January 1st with no end in sight
  21. Has anyone tried keto pills before your surgery to help lose some weight? And did they help? Sent from my G60 using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. RickM

    Keto pills

They are guaranteed to help lighten your wallet. Beyond that, it's very unlikely that they will do anything to help your weight - just like all those other miracle weight loss pills. They might have some caffeine in them to make your feel more energetic or something, but given that keto diets don't do much for your weight (other than some temporary water weight loss, which we all get when we go into a significant caloric deficit) these things aren't going to do anything for you, either. You would be better off putting the money spent on these types of things into a few sessions with an RD to learn how to eat to sustainably manage your weight in the long term.

    August Sleevers-How are you doing??

Thanks so much! I definitely journal daily (using MyFitnessPal), which helps me immensely. The biggest thing, though, is that I follow a keto diet: (very) low carbs, moderate protein and high fat. I've been doing that since last March and lost 43 pounds prior to surgery and all the rest through yesterday. My husband and I do this together, which is also very helpful. We are committed to a more active lifestyle as well -- we run and bike a few times during the week. To help us keep to that commitment, we work out with our charity team (Team Challenge). This means we get to see friends every week and keep moving. We're adding strength training to our routine this month. Keto is also recommended by our nutritionist (but strangely enough, our surgeon is still on the "low-fat" wagon -- we just nod when we talk to him!). Keto has been a life saver for my husband and me. Oh, I should mention that I'm still on an 800-calorie diet, but I don't watch the calories so much. I watch the carb intake, which I try and keep to less than 30g per day. You're doing great! You're very close to your goal weight, which is fantastic! 2018 is going to be your year! Good luck!
  24. Happy new year everyone. May 2021 be the best year YET! More or less this has been my meals: 7am Protein shake 10 am one Scrambled egg with milk this makes it soft 12 2 oz of protein sometimes I’ll have a little veggie or mash 3 snack like cottage cheese, string cheese or keto friendly snacks 6 2 oz protein sometimes I’ll have a veggie or mash 8 protein shake Water in between meals and snack If I’m hungry before bed I’ll usually add a scrambled egg
  25. I Am Enough!

    August surgery buddies!

I thought I was going to lose my mind if I couldn't chew food soon. Thank the heavens and the gods above for real food once again! My go-to favs are chicken salad, grits and eggs with butter, and I've replaced the morning cuppa joe with a warmed-up protein drink with real whipped cream. Following much more of a clean keto/low carb diet now. really focusing on my protein and water. Life is much happier now
