    Calories vs. Net Calories

    Yep, stall. They can last 1-3 weeks. Check with your dietician about your caloric needs especially with the activity you’re doing. Also is your surgeon aware of how much activity you are doing? All plans are different but it seems a little too much this soon post surgery. I was advised gentle walks to begin & not to start more active exercise until the second month but that was my surgeon.
  2. So sorry you are experiencing this though some of what you’ve mentioned can happen. It’s not uncommon to struggle with purées to begin & will go back a stage for a week or so. You’ve had a pretty major surgery & your tummy is healing & we heal at our own pace so you may need longer on each stage. Your tummy can be very sensitive to lots of flavours & textures for a while, causing you to bring up what you ate or be nauseous. So it can be quite a bit of trial & error to begin before you are further a long in the healing process. Are you taking multivitamins yet? Many can make you feel nauseous & cause yiu to vomit. Ensure you take the. After you’ve eaten or with your last sip. Try a different brand, formulation or try swapping to gummies or patches. Try warming your water (room temp or more) as many of us find warm drinks more soothing than cool or cold. Ensure you are sipping/eating slowly & are keeping the sip/bite small. Sometimes further thinning out purées can make them easier to tolerate. Add additional gravies or stock to your purées or milk to your yoghurt so they’re more runny than dollop like. But it is a good idea to go ahead with the endoscopy to ensure nothing else is happening. And maybe try a stronger dose PPI.
  3. Anyone have issues with Premier Protein Shakes? I’m 1 week post-op and starting on Friday last week, I started having issues with them. When drinking them it would make my stomach upset, give me a weird film in my mouth that would leave a weird aftertaste and I couldn’t get rid of. Even brushing my teeth it would stay. Because I couldn’t stomach it, I switched to a plant based powder and use fairlife fat-free and so far I’ve been fine. I have had lactose issues in the past, so wondering if this may be that or if others have experienced something similar.

    you're in a stall. They usually last 1-3 weeks, so you should be nearing the end of it. I wasn't eating that much at a month out, but then, you're exercising more than I was. i don't really trust those machines because I think they overestimate how many calories you're burning, but you're definitely burning some calories. Once this stall breaks, if your overall trend is down, then you're fine.

    Hello. I am new here. I'm already finding this forum very informative. I have my first initial consult with the bariatric surgeon next week. I know I have to tell my wife and frankly I do not know how she will react. Knowing her she will say I don't need surgery, I just need to stop snacking particularly at night. I really want her support if I decide to have WLS, probably the original gastric bypass. I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager. I am now 67. I was on the original Atkins in 1971. I have yo-yo dieted many times. I don't think I am morbidly obese and I hide my weight well but my BMI is 37%. I have enjoyed bicycling and at one point about 20 years ago I was riding a lot 2-3 hour 4-5 times a week. Even then I was not able to lose much and always struggled up every hill. I take medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol, GERD and type II diabetes. My other main motivation is to get off my medications. I understand this will be a transformative procedure if I choose to have it and will radically need to alter the way I eat. I think I am prepared for that. Any suggestions on "selling" the idea to my wife would be appreciated. I know I would enjoy bicycling much more and probably ride more. I do still work some, about 20 hours a week. I work at home. Thank you.

    This is a stall. Everyone, but EVERYONE, experiences them. You are doing really well and if you stick to your programme you'll start losing again really soon. They are the most hated of all phases but they always pass. If it helps at all just stop weighing yourself for a week or two. It sounds like you're doing really well. Took me 6 weeks to lose 18lbs after my sleeve. Also, unless your girlfriend is a bariatric surgeon or nutritionist I would just nod and smile when she says stuff. 😉
  8. I am 1 month post-op today and I’m down about 18 lbs. I healed quickly, I’ve been back on the treadmill since week 2 and am walking 2+ miles a day. I had very little pain post surgery and I have had NO problems with any foods. To the point where I feel like I SHOULD be having more difficulty. I have lost little if any weight since January 25th. A girlfriend thinks I’m consuming too many calories. I am eating between 800-1000 calories a day, but burning between 400-500 on the treadmill daily. I’m tall. 5’8” and my SW was 290. CW is 272. I started the pre-op diet at 303.2. Am I eating too many calories? Should I feel ok that my NET calories daily are closer to 500-600 calories a day? I feel like my mind is slipping into that dark space where I feel like this surgery is gonna be a failure. Like…. The weight just isn’t going to come off. I know this “stall” was to be expected…. But I would feel better with more directions aside from meet your protein and fluids (which I’m doing). Would love to hear your thoughts.
  9. Once I hit the pureed phase I just pureed whatever my family was eating with extra sauce/gravy! I have said it here many times but the best thing I have ever tasted in my life was a big roast lamb Sunday dinner (couple of spoons of everything, pureed with gravy). A-MAZ-ING after 3 weeks of just fluids. I don't have a problem with baby food consistency though and I know that could be an issue for some folks. I'm sorry you haven't been given many ideas - if you have a blender and can eat mush the sky is the limit.

    When to up calories?

    At around 3-4 months I was eating about 500 calories a day and struggling to even get that down. My surgeon was concerned that wasn't enough and tried to get me to raise it by 100 each week until I got to 800. Your numbers may vary; I am a woman and I'm very small in stature so it's likely your team will want you to eat more than that.

    When to up calories?

    I think I was pretty much exactly where you are at 3 months post op! My team went one step further and didn't give me ANY goals at all. Just food consistency phases. I learned how to eat and what to eat mainly by reading this forum. I think I still had to push myself to reach 800 calories a day - I remember at that stage often having to take a few spoons of nut butter or some cheese at bedtime just to hit the 800 some nights but I never wanted to eat any less than that. I was drinking alcohol at weekends by then too so my intake was well over 1000 on two days a week - that was by choice though. It may have slowed my weight loss a little but luckily it didn't stop me reaching goal. I mainly walked, but I walked *very* fast and did (still do) it several days a week. I have never adjusted my intake to make allowances for that - never felt the need. I was very conscious of squeezing every pound of loss that I could over the 'honeymoon period' when I wasn't hungry - with my own personal concession being a couple of glasses of wine on Fri and Sat night. Over the months my calories have kind of drifted upwards really - never planned. I can just eat a bit more before I get full, and I get properly hungry now which forces me to eat again at the most 3 hours later - at 3 months out I was pretty much eating by the clock to get 100 or so calories in every 2-3 hours. You had your surgery almost exactly a year after me and you started 4lbs heavier. I've just looked at my diary and this time last year I was...218lb exactly, same as you today. What are the chances? You are doing brilliantly. 😍

I am scheduled for February 20th and am 7 days into my 2 week liver shrinking diet and the first 3 days were awful and even more so because I have 3 kids and my wife that were eating there normal meals. Somewhere around day 4 or 5 it started getting easier as far as the feeling hungry and not sleeping well because of it. I just keep telling myself it's for my family and myself.     How long until surgery?

    I was told the insurance company had a month to respond, although not sure if that's a state law or ??? At any rate, in my case it only took the insurance company about two weeks. After that, it really depends on the surgeon's schedule. I think i was offered a date about two months after my approval came through, but since I worked in education at the time (I'm now retired), I asked to be scheduled in June (about four months after approval), which of course was fine with them.
  15. Three weeks post op, I am running out of things to eat. Shakes, broth, jello, pudding and scrambled egg. What else can we eat 3rd week post op?
  16. After completing the last of your insurance requirements how long did it actually take until you had your surgery? I complete my last dietary appointment on April 5th and was told it takes around 3-4 weeks for insurance to approve and be scheduled. Does that seem slow?

    Any 50yo or older?

    I’m 59. I had surgery last September on the 26. I’ve lost 49 lbs. when I weighed last on January 8th of this year. I know I’ve lost more because I’m fitting into a medium and large. It’s very hard to not graze. Try ordering from BariatricPal. Everything there is healthy you can’t miss. That’s what I’m do ping and I’m loosing weight by the week. Focus on your protein shakes, water and do your snacks. If you want sweets you can have that too. Look whatever you want to eat look for it in there. I felt like eating pancakes the other day. I ordered BariatricPal pancakes with the zero sugar. You don’t have to make a large order . Whatever you feel like eating just order it. I eat everything and since I started to get ready for my surgery last September I’ve lost 94 lbs. Try it you won’t be sorry.

    Pre-op Anxiety

    I am finishing my 2 week pre-op liquid diet tomorrow and have surgery early on Valentines day. Still super nervous but mostly excited to stop being hungry all the time lol. I just keep reminding myself who I am doing all this for...my precious little man. The liquid diet is definitely no joke and has played havoc on my emotions. Super weird and scared about pain level.     Need Advice

    I know all plans are different but I didn’t need to have another disgusting shake after the first two weeks. Like the others, I got my protein in from ‘real’ food. I didn’t hit my protein goal everyday but the days I didn’t I’d be close. I agree with the suggestion to find a high protein yoghurt. Eat it as yoghurt or make it into a yoghurt drink by blending with milk (count the added milk as fluid). I got 15g protein from the yoghurt & 25g for the yoghurt drink. Made rolled oats on milk & made it pretty thin. Same with scrambled eggs. Only small amounts of additional protein from the milk but it all adds up.I often just ate meat as my lunch meal too - no vegetables. If you eat only 3ozs of most meats you should get about 20g protein which was 1/3 of my daily goal - your goal may be more. I agree, get the burning checked out. Most hunger pangs are just stomach acid not real hunger. You may need a stronger PPI for your stomach acid. And yes, get some high protein meal ideas from your dietician. Water can seem almost heavy to drink @Possum220 for a while. Don’t know why but it does get easier. Try drinking it at room temperature if you drink it cool/cold. Add a little squeeze/splash of fruit juice (any citrus, squashed berries, etc.) to your water & see if that helps ‘lighten’ the water.
  21. I totally understand. I'm also very worried about strictures and possible dumping. I've been very fortunate with my sleeve, besides having reflux, which is actually manageable with medications, but I don't want to be on these for life as they can also cause problems with long-term use. I recently tried stopping them for a couple of days just to see if I really needed to have this revision. Even just oatmeal was causing me to reflux, so I guess it is the best thing for me right now. I will also miss being able to use ibuprofen occasionally for aches and pains. I didn't start using it until about a year out from sleeve, and it's not even once a week, but sometimes it's the only thing that really helps. Best of luck to you!

    Concerned about meds

    our clinic originally said we had to crush meds for the first four weeks, but when I asked the PA who worked there, he said if the med was the size of a pencil eraser or smaller, it was probably fine to swallow them whole - so I did. There were two that were bigger than that. One was a calcium tablet, so I either split them in half and took them that way, or else I had a calcium chew. I can't remember what the last med was, but the PA said I could probably go a couple of weeks without that one, so I did. At that point, I was able to swallow it whole. so long way of saying - I never had to crush mine. Thankfully.

    1 week in the Caribbean...

    I live in PR and I’m getting my surgery next week. Where did you stay??? Cause I’ve found everything I need and more. Yes culturally we do use rice and bread a lot but there is plenty of options. If somebody is coming over just ask, we can point you where to find everything, defined in a touristy are it will be more difficult.

    Pre-op Anxiety

    Have you asked your doc about meds to help your anxiety? With the pre op diet my doctor put me on, it makes me wonder if a liquid diet would have been better. He has his patients eat items from https://protifoods.com/. most make me nauseous. I have two more weeks of it to go. My first weigh in is tomorrow.
