  1. A little backstory: I had a sleeve back in 2015. I went from 450 to 190. I kept it off for 5 years. Enter pandemic, job loss, and alcohol abuse. I gained 130 of the 240 back. My little sleeved stomach also grew and I was eating full size meals again and I developed severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. My esophagus was constantly sitting in acid and was scarring and narrowing and the hernia was so bad, food and pills were constantly getting stuck. Fast forward to the present, I had a revision to a gastric bypass to fix the GERD and hernia. Those things have been 100% resolved (thank goodness), but the weight hasn’t been flying off like it did with my sleeve. I lost 40 pounds my first month with the sleeve. An average of 1-2 pounds per day. Right now, with the bypass I’ve slowed down after exiting the liquid diet stage to where I’m losing .3-.5 pounds per day and loosing about 3-4 per week. I know I should be happy that I’m losing, but I’m disappointed that it’s not flying off like before. Especially because my activity level and calories burned is much higher than it was with my sleeve at this stage. I’ve gone in circles trying to wrap my head around it. I know I’m 8 years older (36 now) and I have developed chronic insomnia over the last year, so I only get 3-5 hours per night. I’m absorbing less, so maybe I’m in starvation mode? I’m at a loss Anyone have any encouragement or experience with this?
  2. I am maybe a little more confident than you. I have learned over the years to act confident. My jobs needed a confident person, so like an actress I took over that role. The attention I get now amuses me as I am soon to be 64 and married 47 years. Only this week, I was stood waiting for a bus, totally wrapped up in my winter coat, leggings and boots. A 30ish cyclist went passed me and he almost fell off , craning his neck to look me up and down. He needed to put glasses on. I am way passed my sell by date

    Any April Surgery Dates?

    The variation in post-op diet plans is really interesting. My plan doesn’t allow any veggies or fruit for at least 4 weeks, and then you can slowly incorporate first steamed veggies and eventually raw fruits and veggies. I’m 16 days out and am desperate for a salad!
  4. My revision surgery was April 19, 2023 and I also have BCBS. my original sleeve date was 11/2016 and I lost 100 lbs the first year and half. My lowest weight was 135 and I’ve maintained that for the last five years. Around my second year post sleeve I developed acid reflux and heartburn daily. When I would eat, shortly after I’d need to either throw up the acid trying to come up or I’d have to sit and tolerate the acid burning until it subsided. Daily omeprazole and tums did very little to counteract the symptoms. If I ate, it was happening. 2020 I had another EGD performed that showed Barrett’s esophagus had begun to form in my esophagus and there was a hernia. The surgeon wanted to move forward with a bypass revision but because I didn’t want to lose any weight or have another major surgery I asked for other medications to try before we went straight to surgery. 2023 in March I had another EGD performed that showed three ulcers, the hernia and worsening Barrett’s. Nothing had worked so far and my quality of life just wasn’t good. Considering I love to cook and eat, I knew I couldn’t just live with this much longer. I agreed to do the surgery. The doctor sent over an EGD result, CT scan and upper GI to BCBS who approved the revision surgery. (My plan has Bariatric benefits) if your plan doesn’t have Bariatric benefits I would check with your insurance coordinator to see if there is another option. I am now three days post revision- no heartburn or acid reflux at all. Painful, but on the mend.

    Oh no way would I have been fit for rollercoasters 6 weeks post surgery. But we are all different and recover differently! How do you feel now? Does it feel doable based on your current progress OP?
  6. I lost at a rate of about 1kg per week, which is what I used to lose doing a "normal" diet before surgery. Compared to many others, I was a slow loser. You're doing absolutely fine. I've never heard of this 50% by 3 months either, and honestly I think a lot of folks go into WLS with unrealistic expectations of how fast they'll lose (either via misinformation online or by TV shows like My 600lb Life). So relax. Everything is normal. Stay off the scale and distract yourself with other things. Weighing yourself so frequently isn't helpful and when stalls hit (and they will), it's even less helpful.
  7. Totally the same experience as Catwoman7. I am approaching 18 months post sleeve and still losing a very tiny amount - way less than half a pound a week. Took me more than 5 months to lose half my excess weight. But we are all different. I wish you all the best with your loss. Stick to the plan and you'll get there xxx

    Worried I Will Not Lose Enough Weight

    I lost no where NEAR 50% of my excess weight in three months. That is bizarre - I imagine very few of us have lost that quickly. I'm not sure I understand your chart, but most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month, then 10 lbs (give or take) for a few months, and then it drops...and drops...and drops. By the end (I finally stopped losing weight in month 20), I was losing like 2 lbs a month. EDIT - never mind - I get it now. So you've lost about 30 lbs in two months? That's absolutely normal. I started out heavier than you, and I'd lost 29 lbs by then. Just stick to your plan and the weight will come off. I ended up losing over 200 lbs.
  9. I say give it time and stop focusing on how much you have lost each day. After I stopped weighing myself and stopped being hyper focused on how much I lost daily things changed. A week or more then I waited longer to weigh myself. I think I didn't attempt to weight myself for a couple of months and the weight loss was much more dramatic when on the scale. For me focusing daily on the loss of weight didn't help me to, that's me personally. You can focus on your weight, just don't let it consume you. Also, don't get sad if it's not coming off as quickly as you thought it would. Give it time, find something else to focus on and just continue moving around and eating healthier than you had in the past. This is my take on the situation, I don't know if my advice is the best as I have shifted from weight loss worry to other concerns. It's hard to stay positive at times, but for me it helped to try and distract myself and keep busy. I would also say, start to plan on your clothing choices and what you would like to wear. That was the most exciting time for me. I could finally dress more like a girl and not stuck in the clothes that were only in my size.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

    Congrats! I’m having my RNY at NYU (acronyms!) next week! Which surgeon did you work with? I’m with Dr. Tchokouani who was very calm, friendly and attentive at our meeting. I hope the healing goes well!
  12. My excess weight distribution is mainly on my trunk from the neck down and only radiating down a few inches on my upper arms and legs. My shoulders had become heavily padded including the dreaded "buffalo hump". Although I only lost 6.5# during the one week pre-op and an additional 18# since surgery on 3/3/23, I have noticed substantial changes. I have lost (don't want to find it) the buffalo hump and my neck has gotten longer (optically). I have started losing the "football pads" off my shoulders, revealing the promise of regaining my former graceful neck which has been encased in shoulder fat for 10 years.
  13. My stall finally broke. It didn't last long compared to some others, but since I thought I'd have rapid weight loss the first month, it was discouraging.  Reading about people's stall experience on here helped.  My surgery was 3/23/23 (195lbs) and I think my stall started on 4/4 when I weighed 188.4 (12 day avg .55lbs a day).  I started gaining and losing. On 4/9 I weighed 187.8 (5 day avg .12lb a day) and stayed there for a couple days before starting to gain/lose and settled on 187.6 on 4/15 and 4/16 (7 days avg  .029lb a day) . On 4/17 I lost .6, then .2, then .4, and .2 yesterday and .2 today (5 day avg .32lbs a day). Slower than the first 12 days, but it's going down again.  I've lost a total of 9 lbs in 29 days, but I'm hoping that now that the stall is broke and I can walk without back pain, the next month will be more encouraging.

    Roller Coasters After VSG

    I went at about 5 weeks, I made sure to carry water and sugar free Gatorade. I had no issues, but listen to your body.
  15. So I got my VSG on 3/28. My birthday is 5/7 and my friend wants to take me to an amusement park (I LOVE roller coasters) but that is about 3-2 days short of me being 6 weeks post op. It is a long way to go if I won't be able to ride any rides. I REALLY want to go and will obviously listen to my body but is it a bad idea to try to go? If I start with milder rides and make sure I snack and stay hydrated do you all think I could/should go?

    Planning on getting the sleeve

    As the other commenters have stated, the biggest regret is only that I didn't do it sooner. Yes, the first few weeks can be difficult (the gas pains for the first few days reallllly suck, but they will subside as you get up walking), however, it gets easier as time goes on. The ecstasy you will feel as the pound melt away will make everything worth it. More importantly, you will get healthier, and with any luck, your asthma may less or totally subside.

    Is this enough?

    I agree with the others - exercise only accounts for about 10% of weight loss (although it's great for your health!). It seems to be more effective once you hit maintenance (research shows this - I'm currently taking a graduate level nutrition class on obesity and weight loss). most people are encouraged to get at least 150 minutes a week of exercise for health - more for weight loss/maintenance (up to 300-ish hours). Strength training 2x a week, cardio three or more times a week, so you're doing great there. But you also need to have a routine that you like and are likely to continue long term. Your routine sounds fine - but are you OK with it? You don't need to add to it unless you really want to - unless you want to add some variety to keep it interesting. For my cardio, I rotate walking, swimming, water aerobics, biking (when the weather cooperates), and cardio dancing (such as Zumba). I also do walking videos (youtube) a lot in the winter (like "Walk Away the Pounds"). I need the variety since I'm susceptible to "fitness burnout"...

    I got the bypass rather than the sleeve, but my answer would be the same regardless. The first few weeks post-surgery can be rough and some people initially do have regrets, but once they get through that, almost no one has regrets other than they wish they'd have done it sooner. Having this surgery changed (and probably saved) my life. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Best decision I've ever made!

    Awww. I’m sure - it’s quite an emotional journey and so much going on for the body and mind. Baby steps is all it’s going to be about now. I’m doing pretty alright. Def much better week 2 in the pain dept. Trying to get closer to protein and water goals with each passing day. I struggle with artificial sugar tastes. I’m on puréed and getting very bored with how limited it is (for my program at least), though I had excitement when I came across a recipe for baked ricotta and it was absolutely delicious. Hoping my appts coming up next week advance me to soft foods.

    Up and down, but mostly up. My hormones got the best of me the first week and I did a lot of crying and even some feeling sorry for myself. Now I'm just fighting exhaustion. I feel like if I can get my strength back I can conquer the world, but taking it day be day. I appreciate you asking! How are you doing so far?
  22. Hello friends! 2 and 1/2 years out post VSG, donated a kidney to my daughter 15 months ago and had a full tummy tuck with muscle repair 5 ish months ago, here is my issue/concern. I have seen my Bariatric team, primary dr, kidney transplant team and I am still have no real understand of what’s happening!!! they slapped a Dexcom on me die to crazy blood sugars. Spike to over 350 and at night drop below 40, yes I said 40. Full on symptoms of hypoglycemia aboit 4 days out of the week despite anything I try with my diet. The endo ordered acarbose for me three times a day, I’m carrying glucagon nasal spray for my lows that get bad. all my blood tests come out pretty good, my A1c is a little higher than I would like it and they are throwing around things like insulin resistance (blood tests don’t show it), pre diabetes and insulinoma. My Bariatric team is a little concerned because they have never had to treat anyone with acarbose (anti-diabetic medication) and it isn’t supposed to lower my lows at all but help lower my spikes after meals. I’m eating super low carb and high protein and all the dietitian could give me for advice was to cut out bananas. Has anyone here out a year or two dealt with such a thing. I can’t take a lot of medications due to only having one kidney?? im just out of ideas and options !!!

    Help 😞

    Hey everyone, I had my sx gastric sleeve 2/20 and I’m almost 10 weeks out. It’s been complications since surgery and I don’t know what else to do neither do the doctors. I have sever pains in my chest and feels like a ball sitting in my throat. I did a second surgery of fixing hiatal hernia and I’m 2 weeks out from this. I been in and out the hospital I can’t eat or keep food down. When I do eat food the pain of twisting and burning the moment food touches my stomach. I throw up a ball of mucus. I can’t even take oral medications and I’m at lost and regret if everything in life after this surgery. Anyone can give me pointers? Anyone been through this? I cry everyday I can’t eat or drink anything besides water. The doctor last told me it’s in my head? Like what kinda comment is that my surgeon doesn’t even respond a doctor in Mexico who is very popular in social media and 2 my friends got their surgeries there but not going through what I’m going through… help 😭

    First time

    Hello and welcome. Any surgery is tough on mind and body in the first 2 weeks. Bariatrics take it to another level when we have to drink and all our new tiny stomach wants to do is eject it. Just do your best, I was told that would be ok for a few weeks. It took the pressure off somewhat. I must confess I did not do some vitamins for months. Get passed this week and you will feel better. Ring your team if you start to get overwhelmed with pain or nausea etc

    Hurry Up and Wait!

    This process is very much "hurry up, then wait"! I should have been able to have all my requirements done in three months but I will be six months in when I get my surgery in June. Also if you dont like the DR I would look to find someone else. I have been extremely impressed with my surgeon and his staff this far.
