    Surgery date

    My date is March 1, and I dont have to start liquid diet until afterwards. Just low carb/no sugar one week out, although I’ve already started as a way to get my head in the game and stay invested. Good luck to all!
  2. Yes it does get better. At the moment you’re healing from pretty major surgery & everything is swollen, tender & sensitive. Diarrhoea, nausea, low energy, light headedness, difficulty swallowing are all pretty common post surgical experiences. You’ll find in a month or so it has passed. I had a terribly embarrassing diarrhoea experience on day 3. Got up to pee, took a couple of steps & oh gracious no. Gush. No warning at all. It was dark from surgical bleeding & had a foul odour. I had just the one attack but a friend had it persist for about a week. Beware ‘wet farts’. Her surgeon had recommended disposal knickers - she said it was best advice. I also had a lot of swelling in my throat making swallowing everything for water to meds a struggle for a few days. It was pretty much fine by day 4. It’s important to at least be close to your fluid goals. Dehydration is a real issue for us after surgery. Try warming your water, shakes & other fluids. Warm drinks tend to be more soothing & easier to swallow. I was allowed green or herbal teas - they were fabulous. Don’t worry if you sip on your shakes & soups for ages as long as you’re getting them in. I also used to dilute them to make them thinner & easier to tolerate (esp the shakes which were disgusting after surgery). Bonus was I was consuming more fluid. All the best.
  3. Yes everything old is new again lol. But I honestly did this prior to surgery, I went through my closet and cleared out about half of my clothes that were getting too big or I knew I wasn't going to wear after. I could have gotten rid of more but wasn't quite ready to part with some things yet. But I know most if not all of my closet is going to have to go. I'm only about a week out from surgery and already almost 10lbs down.

    Documenting your journey

    I have a wellness log, where I try to put in the exercise and food I will have for the week, groceries list etc. You set up goals for the month and write other things that will help you achieve those goals, so I have been putting a picture at the beginning of each month along with my measurements and weight to keep track of it. I also kept one pair of jeans from when I did my consultation with the surgeon to remind me of the journey and do that picture at 1 year. I have seen others do the picture on the same door and in the frame, you can really tell the difference in those.
  5. I am scheduled for the sleeve next week (Feb 23). Looking for ideas on documenting this journey, i.e photos, videos, ect. A few years ago I saw someone that had taken a picture once a month in the same spot, same clothes, then put them into a video and you see her literally shrinking. It was very cool. This is for my own self, NOT for social media, but wondering what others do? I'm not a journal writer, but I'm sure that would be tremendously helpful to go back and read where your head was at!

    The increase of headaches and migraines during the pre-op diet is due to carbohydrate withdrawal. For future pre-opers, the best way to reduce carb and caffine withdrawal headaches is to gradually decrease carbs and caffeine over a period of weeks rather than a sudden cold turkey approach.

    Oh I feel your pain. Most of my migraines are triggered by one of three things. Sleep disturbance; blood sugar disturbance; hormone disturbance (specifically pregnancy, when I had the worst migraines of my life - but I know others have them at menopause). I suspect yours might be as a result of the second? If so you might want to think about some slow release carbs if you can on your programme. Also - the worst headaches of my life have been caffeine withdrawal headaches - could yours be those?

    Oh this is SO interesting to me! I graze on Mondays and always allow myself extra leeway. It's far and away my worst eating day of the week but I have learned to allow myself this and then track track track Tuesday - Friday. Interesting.
  10. Hi Everyone, I have been getting a ton of Migraines during my 2 week pre op diet. Is this typical for other migraine sufferers? I wonder if I am missing something essential in my diet triggering them, and am curious if anyone found the missing link. Overall I have done well with the pre op diet, but these migraines are killing me.

    Grazing, is this normal?

    I graze all day too. Since the beginning. Like @Ms.SSS said it's the total calories at the end of the day. For example, today I had 3 that's it dark chocolate truffles, later I had 100g watermelon, an hour or so later I had a cup of grapes. If i graze on the heavy side during the day, I will skip dinner or eat light low calorie filling snack instead... Etc. I give myself a lot of leeway, I go by average monthly calories so when if I go over average calories one week, I know I can make up for it the week after. I don't think it's a problem unless you are eating due to emotion and/or eating out of boredom. Even then, if one tracks, it makes one aware and helps keep the weight from creeping back while trying to figuring out things emotionally.

  13. I’m stalling right now too. Trying to ignore it and push through. The nice thing about this surgery is when a stall hits we have the confidence to know if we stick to our dr’s plan for it we know something going to give and we will start losing again. Not fun when we are in one but I find it so much less stressful than weight loss stalks prior to surgery. I’m a little over two months out and also active. My team doesn’t have us focus on calories on protein and hydration though from tracking on lose it i know I am generally consuming between 600-750 total calories and burning 500 in my dedicated workout time with my active calories burned on my Apple Watch barely ever finishing under 950. I think most of the weight loss we see in these early months is more closely a result of the restriction and absence of gherlin than anything. Also important to remember caloric deficit for pounds loss is itself a very imprecise and variable. Follow the instructions of your team and you’ll be through this before you know it.
  14. I am one week post op and head hunger has been driving me crazy. Been watching a lot of TV and every time I see a commercial for fast food or something it makes me want to eat.
  15. I’ve written here in the last weeks how I’ve really been lacking energy. Recently I’ve been noticing my mind (which is most definitely exhausted) either over estimating how tired my body is or how much effort something will take me … for instance like a short half mile walk to the pharmacy after a grueling day. It’s like my head is saying on repeat you’re too tired to do this even as I walk, but as I check in with my body walking, I realize my body is just fine, feels good even. I imagine this is in part the balance of having lost 60+ lbs since first visiting my surgeon for a consult last august. I’m alittle over 2 months post sleeve. I also wonder if any of mental exhaustion has to do with the effect of the restriction on my adhd. Anyone else experience a similar mind body disconnect?
  16. As everyone has said stick to your plan and try not to compare yourself to others. All surgeons have different plans, and you will see the most weight loss from those that were on a liquid diet for longer periods. For example, my sister had the sleeve done in April and I in November, her weight loss is higher than mine at 3 months post op even though she was 215 at the time of surgery and I was 268, but she was on liquids for a full month, pureed for 2 weeks and softs for 2 weeks. I was allowed pureed food 10 days post op. We can see how much weight someone has lost but everyone's journey is different. Know that if you do what you are supposed to be doing and put the effort in, you will lose the weight.

  19. Hi from the multiple videos I have watched the first thing you don't want to do is get on the scale after 2 weeks after surgery. Weigh yourself every month because there will be stalls in between. Don't regret the surgery it will work out for you. Try to watch more videos to get inspired.   20. if you've been following your clinic's recommendations, then it's likely water retention from the IV fluids. That's basically salt water, and a lot of people retain that. There are some people on here who've even weighed 10 lbs more when they left the hospital than when they arrived! It can take a week or occasionally longer to work its way out of your system. stick to your plan and the weight will come off. Everyone is different due to different factors, many of which you have little to no control over (like age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic level, how much weight you lost prior to surgery, etc). The two things you DO have control over is how closely you stick to your plan and your activity level. If you do well with those, the weight will come off, whether fast or slow. also, the 20 lb loss you said you think you should have lost in the first two weeks - banish that thought. If you started out at 600+ lbs, then yes - maybe - but for us more "normal" WLS patients, losing 20 lbs in two weeks just doesn't happen. Most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first MONTH. Yes of course you will find people who've lost more or less than that the first month, but they're outliers. You're probably doing just fine. Give it more time and remember to stick to your plan! I thought i was a terribly slow loser - and I WAS a bit behind others with similar statistics (starting weight, etc), but I ended up losing over 200 lbs.

Many people on here have said they are weighing heavier after their surgery and say its because they are pumped full of water to hydrate them for the weeks after when its tough to drink for many. So you are really lucky that you have no issues there. Water can weigh heavy so just give it time and this will pass! You feel like you are failing., Please don't. How many calories a day are you logging ? If you could have compared yourself to me at the same stage, I was lucky to get in 300 a day. I was so ill. My body was hanging onto every calorie it could get hold of. People were racing ahead of me BUT, in the end it didn't matter, as I healed my weight dropped. I got to where I am now happy with myself. Listen to the nurse, give yourself 6 months to a year to do this. Its not magic. You have to put lots of effort in to get to the weight you desire. You may also be in a early version of the dreaded 3 week stall. Hang in there and keep away from the scales if you can.

    Binge Eating Before Surgery

    My surgery is in 2 weeks I have done that. I binge eat all my favorite foods and before my liquid diet starts today I ate a big platter of rice and jerk chicken and I enjoyed every minute of it.   24. My doctor said I was at the perfect weight for surgery so I didn't need to do a liquid diet. Now I spoke to my nutritionist, she said I have to be on a liquid diet since I gained 2 pounds. But I still wanna eat wat I want but in smaller portions. Is there any advice someone can give me so I can stick to this liquid diet for 2 weeks before my surgery 3/1.   25. Hi all! I’m a new member of the group - I hope you’re all well! I had gastric sleeve surgery on 31st January 2023, after losing 13lbs on the pre-op diet. On the morning of my surgery, I weighed 281lbs. I lost no weight in the first week even though I was drinking my required water intake and having between 60-80g of protein a day. Today is two weeks post op. I’m officially allowed to move onto purées and so first thing this morning, I weighed myself and I’ve only lost 4lbs?? I try not to compare myself to others, but I’m so disheartened and even low key regret having the surgery now. I keep seeing people reporting a stone weight loss in a week, 12 lbs a week, 8 lbs the second week etc and so I assumed this would be the same for me. I’ve been very strict with my post op diet and making sure to get in at least 30 mins of movement a day. I’ve typically been consuming protein shakes, water, protein yogurt, tomato soups and the odd sugar-free/fat free children’s ice cream lolly. I feel like I’m doing something wrong, and feel like a bit of a failure. I feel like my body is actively working against me. I spoke to my bariatric nurse who just said ‘you’re still healing, give it time’, but I don’t know if it’s just an excuse.
