  1. I take two Flinstone's chewables 500 IU Calcium with D twice a day B12 and BComplex Daily I've got a heavy duty pill crusher, it makes powder out of the calcium pills. I just sprinkle the powder on a spoon full of yogurt or oatmeal or whatever....down the hatch. Easy peasy.
  2. I'm so jealous of people whose surgeons don't require a liquid diet (or ones that let you have a small evening meal). I'm on total liquids (plus Greek yogurt) and I'm so exhausted and cranky I can barely think straight.

    2days post op

I had three days of clear fluids, then several days of clear fluids one hour, Protein shake the next. At about a week, I added yogurt, oatmeal, cream of wheat, sugar free pudding, and cream soup. At about a week and a half, I added potatoes, a little very soft meat, a little tofu, beans. I went a little faster than most...but I've suffered zero nausea, and my activity is through the roof. I approached each food very cautiously and my body was ready. Everyone is different. The swelling inside your stomach will improve differently for each person. Take it easy, take it slow....you'll get there!

    2days post op

I didn't eat after surgery. I was sleeved 12/7. My program calls for a week of clear liquids, then two weeks of full liquids until I even get to try soft and purée foods. I don't even get yogurt until the 28th. A liquid diet after surgery seems fairly par for the course, but every program differs. My program calls for 64 ounces of fluids per day, which includes three protein shakes while in the liquid stage, and two protein shakes per day in the soft/purée stage. Total protein at least 60 grams. I think as long as you try to get your protein in, and make sure you're getting enough water, you should be fine. I haven't really consumed anything but protein, water, Powerade zero, and jello for a week, and I was just able to add tomato and strained cream soups two days ago.

    2days post op

I’m 2 days post op and I still haven’t really eaten anything. I’ve only had a few sips of protein shakes and like 2 bites of yogurt. I have been able to drink the required amount of water needed. I guess my question is...should I be worried that I’m not really eating?
  6. Hi Everyone, Down .6kg this week. Biggest challenge - Christmas treats everywhere!! Have enjoyed a little here and there but no blow out or binge which I am happy with. Biggest success - joining a gym. I am doing the c25k app program and have my session with the personal trainer this week to start resistance and strength training. I actually feel great during and after the interval running which is a total surprise to me. Thought it might be helpful to document my day on a plate. Keep in mind I am over 3 months post esg; Breakfast - 100g Greek yogurt, oats, walnuts and blueberries. Snack - 1/2 cup white grapes Lunch - rotisserie chicken (80g) and green salad Snack - apple, 15 almonds, 1 square of dark chocolate Dinner - vegetable soup, 1 slice homemade pizza with thin base. I try to drink 1.5 lt of water and drink coffee, lots of coffee during the day. Occasionally a glass of wine or 200ml Diet Coke or mineral water as a treat. I am trying to approach my food intake as "nutrition over no carb". I know that low carb gets results but I want to be healthy and fighting fit. My dietician reassures me that the fibre content in the fruit balances out the sugar and that the nutrients are worth the carbs. I often eat eggs or have a protein shake for breakfast, and meat and veg for dinner but the above plan is today's intake. I am trying to stop eating after dinner for the night as this is a time I have always snacked in the past. I hope to do 3-4 sessions per week at the gym and meet my 10000 steps everyday. I am preparing mentally now for Christmas as there will be so much eating. I will try limit the holiday food fiesta to just Xmas eve and Xmas day and certainly enjoy the food in smaller portions. My strategy is to go to the gym each day (except Xmas day) over the next week to try counteract extra eating. I don't want to feel "on a diet" during the holidays but also don't want to unrail my progress. For me, I was always the kind of dieter who fell off the wagon and then would say to myself - I will just eat what I want then start this new diet next week. It's exactly how I got so overweight. So I'm trying to avoid that way of thinking and just say - yep I really enjoyed my Christmas lunch and the desserts but now it's time to get back to the plan. The old saying, don't make a bad day, a bad week, or a bad month. I wish you all lots of luck over the next week at staying on track with reaching your nutrition and exercise goals. Remember - don't beat yourself up if you find this difficult. You just have to admit that you ate what you ate and have the mindset to ensure you get back to the behaviour that's going to get you healthy. Mel xo

    5 Days post-op

I am 10’days post op and I was hungry Day 2 and thought I was nuts. One, I know part of it was mental. The other I was legit hungry. I asked the nurse when I went in for IV therapy and she said to try and take bites of yogurt or drink some protein shake every two hours. But even now when I’m hungry say when I’m going to bed i look back at what I’ve had and it’s not a lot even though I’ve met my protein goals
  8. I can't eat most things yet. I'm eating off the approved list, and a little bit into the next list (pureed/soft)....taking everything slowly, only eating what's comfortable. Doing my 70 minute rule. Am enjoying: Mashed potatoes oatmeal cream of wheat baby meat sticks yogurt bean/pea Soup canned chicken sweet potato cottage cheese canned green Beans fresh greens in my nutrabullet....set to liquefy with a little apple or prune juice for regularity avacado Tofu Premier Protien...One caramel shake a day used as creamer in my decaf coffee I'm walking about 6-7 miles a day, have incredible energy, am sleeping 7-8 hours a night, and am off most of my meds. I'm eating 1000 calories a day, and getting at least 80g of protien. Sipping drinks nonstop. Weight improves daily. Am pooping daily. I read so many stories on this site about people who have problems....thought I'd add my positive experience to the stew. No nausea. no pain. Feeling like a million bucks. Healing up great. Enjoying my diet, and looking forward to being able to tolerate more Proteins and veggies. Am dying for a salad...but know that's weeks away. Some lessons I've learned: If foods feel uncomfortable or gets stuck for a minute....you're not ready for them. Put them away for another week or two and try again cautiously. If you feel uncomfortably full......get up and walk...it helps shake things loose. Anything new....try a tiny little amount and WAIT 15 minutes. See how it feels. Listen to your body cues. Eating super sugary food makes me sick. Sugary things are good for a bite...not a bowl, even a small bowl. Mom's Christmas cookie was NOT a good idea. A nibble would have been ok. Eating half a cookie...not so much. I was dumb and rationalized I was eating oatmeal, and the cookie was oatmeal....can't hurt, right? Wrong! Be very carful with heavily refined sugar products. The cookie triggered some nausea and I felt really crappy for a bit. It passed in 20 minutes, but I'd rather not repeat that. I love oatmeal and cream of wheat with almond milk and splenda. Greek yogurt is 12g of Protein a tub...try the whipped, it's awesome. You can get instant oatmeal with extra protein. Canned chicken isn't as awful as I feared. Particularly in homemade Soups with beans. Decaf coffee doesn't taste like coffee....but it's not bad. I think of it as something similar to coffee...but not quite coffee. LOL This isn't meant to be advice to anyone else....this is simply what's been working for me. I just wanted people to know that not everyone has a rough hellish experience. For some of us...the surgery is very easy on us and the changes are very tolerable:) Best wishes to each and everyone....on a safe healthy good outcome:)

    Surgery on 12/28

My surgery is 12/28 as well, and I'm a few days into my liquid diet. Below is the diet my surgeon's nutritionist gave me. Basically Premier Protein Shakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a mix of vanilla greek yogurt, broth, jello, apple juice, and milk for additional snacks, which shakes out to around 1000 calories/day. I'm not loving it but I'm managing, and I'm following it pretty well except that I don't like popsicles so (with my surgeon's approval) I'm swapping those out for one Yasso Greek Yogurt Vanilla Frozen Bar per day (WAY better).

    1 week post op??

Oatmeal or cream of wheat thinned with almond milk. Yogurt. Try a little refried beans and see how you tolerate them. I'm getting along with beans great...will be two weeks post op on Tuesday.
  11. Our plan was similar, starting with purees and soft foods as tolerated, along with liquids, from the hospital on out. They had been doing sleeves for some twenty years in their practice at that point, so I figure they know what it can tolerate. The general rule was to try new things one at a time to test for tolerance. I can't quite remember what I had when, but certainly had yogurt,-eggs, soups - starting with straining any chunks, then mashing up the chunks, cheeses, etc. The majority of the protein was from shakes at first, and that gives you the flexibility to try other things in between to see how you are progressing. Some have more inflammation in the stomach than others, so will be less tolerant of non-liquids for a while. YMMV. Take it slow and easy, and get all your water in. I would tend to leave the meats toward a little later in the progression, and the moister, fatter dark meat poultry tends to go down better than the drier white meat. For having on hand ahead of time, I would suggest some yogurt, eggs and a selection of soups, from broth based to cream based and chunky. Jello made with protein is also a good early food for getting your protein in - whatever your dietary allowances in your program, you will likely still be getting most of your protein from supplements for a while, as you just can't eat much of any other protein sources to do the job, yogurt and eggs being the main ones that you will likely be able to have an any useful quantity.
  12. Not only that, but no many people are allowed meat at 3 days post-op either. I couldn't have it until 4 weeks post-op. I would suggest taking it slowly...as slowly as you can. I would not eat ground turkey or chicken on day 3. It took me 2 days just to be able to knock out a few ounces of broth. I didn't even want the jello that they were giving me with every meal. That full sensation is like nothing you've ever felt before. Your stomach now feels as though it is underneath your sternum bone. It is so weird. Anyway, lots of people don't do well with meat in any form for a little while, and I think that the yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes, and broths are going to feel better to you going down. I'm sorry, but I just can't get over the quick progression from water, ice chips and broth one day, and tuna, ground chicken and turkey the next. Please verify that, and whatever you do, eat super slowly and chew, chew, chew. Good luck!
  13. I've tried looking for some immediate post-op food ideas and have come across a lot of information for people further post-op (for example 7 weeks) but not for much immediately post-op. I understand everyone's post-op diet varies and am trying to figure out what I can prepare/meal prep before surgery for post-op. My surgeon's post-op plan : Day 1- no food Day 2-no food. Water, ice chips, SF fluids, broth, decaf coffee/tea, SF ice pops. Days 3-14 1-2oz pureed (mushy) soft, high Protein meals. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, canned tuna, ground chicken and ground turkey. From what I've read, not very many people start mushy or pureed foods at 3 days post-op.... Just looking for some ideas.

First day on soft solids Not Good

Broccoli even when chewed is really high fiber, at 3 months out I am just now handling some fiber. I use fiber powder in all my shakes. Beef as someone else mentioned is hard to get moist enough to handle. I spent most of my soft food stage on greek yogurt mixed with protein powder and soups with very small pieces of meat. I couldn't even handle scambled eggs or more than one bite of mashed potatoes. Your body will let you know what its ready for good luck!

    Need typical day menu

i'm almost 6 months out. every day i have: 1 bottle of IsoPure protein drink (40g protein) 1 individual serving package of plain fat-free Skyr yogurt 1 can of organic refried beans 2 eggs cooked in 1/2 tbsp MCT oil that keeps me full during the day. then i'll eat a light dinner usually of vegetables primary and fish/meat secondary. all in all it's around 1,000 calories/day. not that i'm counting. i don't count calories nor have i ever weighed my food. i put emphasis on having zero sugar, a little bit of good carbs, as much protein as possible, and minimizing fat but not being crazy strict about it. i never cheat. not because i'm awesome but because i have exactly ZERO interest in fast food, sweets, or anything unhealthy. some days my body is more hungry and i feed it. other days it's not hungry and i don't. i think that about 3 months post-op and onward, the hunger cues are very accurate and it's important to listen to them. constant overfeeding isn't good, nor is constant underfeeding. keep it varied, keep your body guessing. i have NOT followed my doctor's advice to eat 3 square meals a day with no snacking. i eat what i described above throughout the day. i see why my surgeon's office recommends that, because it teaches those with bad eating habits to be better. but i don't have bad eating habits, never really have. to me, that schedule creates unnecessary hunger and then the desire to eat too much at meal time. i know i end up eating less overall calories doing it my way than the 3 meals/day way. but everyone is different and has to do what they feel is right and be honest with themselves. (btw - i'm in the 80% percentile of weight loss performance for gastric bypass patients)

    constipation!

just convenient. be sure to get the organic cans of refried beans though. the ingredient list should be "beans, water". don't get anything with hydrogenated lard in it. organic refried pinto and black beans has been my #1 "hack" post-surgery. i typically have 1 can a day, spread out over the whole day. i eat a couple spoonfuls every now and then, and any hunger i might have had is completely satisfied. packed with protein and fiber, and slow-release (won't spike insulin) carbs. i crave it everyday. i went from being a huge meat-eater pre-surgery to craving refried beans and skyr icelandic yogurt everyday. who'd a thunk...
  17. I’m really struggling with things right now. I’ll be two weeks post op on Monday. I have my appt on Tuesday. Everything tastes so bad. It makes me sick. Like, actually eating is fine. My stomach doesn’t get upset, it doesn’t hurt, nothing like that. But it tastes so bad that I don’t want to eat anything. Is mental nausea a thing? I don’t get sick sick, but I’m still very repulsed by it. I’ve tried soooo many things and it all tastes awful. Various soups/broths, yogurt flavors, protein shakes, flavored water w/unflavored protein, pudding, jello... I force myself to drink one protein drink and a greek yogurt cup every day. Although, that’s even a struggle. So I’m averaging roughly 200 calories a day. And again, physically I absolutely think/know I could eat more but the tastes are just so bad. I was really, really sensitive to smells before hand so I don’t know if that has something to do with it? So, I haven’t found anything I remotely like... my friends all talk about their pizza and burritos and I really miss it especially not being able to find at least one thing I sort of like to eat right now. But even then I don’t think I’d like the taste of that stuff. I put cream cheese on a bagel for my daughter and licked a tiny bit off the knife and about gagged. And I freaking LOVED cream cheese before. I do take my vitamins twice a day. I mean, to be honest my chewable vitamins are the least offensive thing I eat each day... they taste like flintstone ones. Idk, I guess I’m just feeling down or frustrated. I hate all the food, wish I could just find something I like, and of course I just miss being able to eat normally. 5’6” 25 yo SW: 256

    No pain?

Ok, 10x may be a little exaggerated, but it's pretty close to that. I have no idea how many ounces I can eat. I've never been a measurer/tracker. But for example, in the beginning I could maybe finish about 1/3 of a yogurt cup. Now I could easily eat 2 cups. Went from nibbling 1/4 quest bar to now being able to eat two (not that I do, but I COULD) a couple forkfuls of salad would stuff me, and now I can easily polish off a couple cups of spinach salad. I used to struggle to sip down enough water, now I can chug 8 ounces at a time. As for all the "bad stuff" (cake, ice cream, bread, candy bars, etc) there's pretty much no restriction. Solid proteins like steak, elk, and pork chops are still pretty restrictive.....probably only 4-5 times as in the beginning. But back then just 2 tablespoons would leave me stuffed for hours. But despite having less restriction, I still eat a fraction of what I did before surgery. I could not have lost over 100% of my excess weight without that severe restriction the first year postop. But in the end, maintenance is all about the choices I make, not my restriction.

    Why Low Fat?

my personal philosophy (and i am NOT an anti-fat believer. saturated and monounsaturated are good for you). HOWEVER: during the first 6 months after surgery, your body has more than enough fat to run on... from you!!! i'm just ending my first 6 months post-surgery (115lbs down) and i have purposely kept any kind of excess fat out. i haven't strictly avoided it, but for instance i get fat-free skyr (yogurt) and trim any visible fat off of meat. go light on the oils. again, the body is getting more than enough fat from your own stored fat cells. it is my personal belief that adding too much fat via diet will slow weight loss during this unique initial period. once i reach my goal weight (new set point), i will make a conscious decision to up the fat content of my diet. because i will NEED more calories at that point, and my body will not have so much ample stores to draw from. so i'll go back to full-fat yogurt, generous olive oil, fattier cuts of meat, etc.

    Surgery date coming 12/28

My surgery is on 12/28/17 as well! Started the pre-op diet today! I didn't bother with a food scale because i feel like it would stress me out more then it would help me. My dietitian and surgeon said they wanted me to consume a maximum of 1000 calories a day. So far today I've had Breakfast: Protein Shake No morning snack ( but if i needed one I have a low fat yogurt plain) Lunch: Sugar free jello pudding, and a yogurt / cottage cheese depending on what i want. Afternoon snack: Protein Shake to get me to dinner Dinner: 1 half cup of chicken broth with sugar free jello and a sugar free Popsicle I love the app my fitness pal and it tracks the calories you've consumed for the day! I've been using it for years!

I'm a horrible snacker at work

I'm a horrible snacker at work, specifically in the afternoon. The last two hours before we leave are often slow and if I'm not busy I want to eat. My go to work snacks are cheese (I do eat full fat cheese per my nut but you can get reduced fat cheese or cheese sticks), beef jerky, nuts, yogurt and sometimes a protein bar if I really need something. As for work temptation I weigh if it's really worth the calories when things are brought into the office. This time of year is hard for sure. For example my co-worker makes the most amazing Christmas cookies ever. I made the choice to eat one but I made sure I tracked it and I compensated for it later. I don't tell myself I can never have anything again because that makes me what it more but I'm more choosey about what I do indulge on. ETA: I'm a year post op and have gotten looser recently. Early out I was very strict about snacking.

    November RNY updates

You should definitely mix some real food in. I had yogurt, eggs, and puréed tuna and chicken salad, along with the shakes to meet my protein goal. Just thought I’d share some things I tried. HW 391.6 SW 347.6 (-44lbs) 11-29-17 CW 330 GW 190
  23. Hi everyone. I had the sleeve done in 2012. My weight loss was good (not great) and had crept up in the last year. I had severe GE Reflux that could not be managed with medicine so I opted for Bypass on Nov 17. At my two week post op appointment, surgeon started me on soft food. I hate eating! My tummy feels so yucky and I vomit every time ( sometimes violently). I drink 1 - 1/2 Premier Protein drinks a day but I can barely get them down - now they just taste awful and I can’t tolerate the taste. I’m living off soup/ thinned yogurt but know I’m not getting the amount of Protein I need. Dr is taking back in for endoscope next week to see if there is an internal problem. Anyone else have these issues?

    4 weeks post op

I'm 3 weeks out and I can eat about 2-3 oz per meal if we're talking food (tuna, soft chicken, beans, etc.). If it's thicker liquid (soup, yogurt), I can tolerate 4-5 oz. If it's water, I can do more than that.

This liquid diet is killing me

Hi. I’m on day two of my pre-op diet. I care for two three year olds and feeding them and having the energy to play all day has been a challenge. But I’m devoted to the cause and so far, no cheating. This is really hard!!! I’m only allowed broth (no soups), SF jello, SF popsicles, 3 protein shakes a day and one low fat yogurt a day... for two weeks. Does that seem more restrictive than most? My clinic assigns this same diet to everyone, regardless of weight or size of liver. my question is when I will get to eat real food again? How long after surgery until I can eat a few pieces of sushi, a few bites of sandwich, or a breakfast sausage? When will life feel normal again and I won’t have to constantly explain my shake when others are eating lunch?
