Little Weight Loss on Pre-OP & None Post-Surgery

Definitely sounds like IV fluids. I went in for a VSG to RNY revision (hernia and GERD) on 8/11 and weighed 212. I spent 4 days in the hospital on IV fluids. I had my first post op on 8/19 and weighed 215. Just stick with it and trust the process. You will lose weight.
  2. it's the IV fluids. Some people gain up to 10 lbs from them. It takes them a few days to work their way out of your system - and then you should be on your way!
  3. I start the next phase of my diet tomorrow and realized that I only have TWO days of pureed before moving onto "very soft" foods - is that common? I was also surprised to see that "very soft" includes fish, meat, veggies - pretty much everything - as long as it's ground-up. The following phase is "soft" which will start 9/16 includes all normal foods, and they just have to be cut small and chewed well - no more grinding up. However, a general diet doesn't start until 10/1. I went thru the bariatric program at a different hospital before changing surgeons at the last minute, and their program required liquid for 2 weeks, pureed for 2 weeks, very soft for 2 weeks, soft for another 2 weeks, then general diet. I would have to be almost 2 months out before I could eat a general diet. I'm just wondering why the variance in the timing of these phases. 🤔
  4. Allienyc, this sounds very familiar, as I am in a similar position. When I started this process, I was 284, with a BMI of 41.9. But, after meeting with the doctor and the psychologist and dietitian, I started following their advice and have been working on getting healthier habits and losing some of the weight. The problem is that I was too good at it- in 30 days, I dropped from 284 to 258, putting my BMI at 38.1. My insurance was "approved", but my nurse navigator said that my weight could cause them to decide not to pay at the last minute. I have high blood pressure, but it is well controlled with medication. I also have high cholesterol, but it is also well controlled with medication. I have been using a CPAP for years, but haven't had a sleep study in the last 10 years, so it isn't in my records. I have an appointment with the sleep specialist this week and we're hoping to get a sleep study done before my surgery on the 21st so that we'll have the documentation we need to have the insurance approval. This all seems so unnecessary since one of the things I'm hoping for is to be able to get rid of the CPAP once I lose the weight.
  5. I contacted my insurance company yesterday to see if I was approved. Turns out everything was submitted on Aug. 19 and I received approval on Aug. 20. I made sure to get the authorization number, date the letter was sent, and a contact name for my doctor. Then I called my doctor to let them know. I received a call later that day from the doctor's office with my surgery date! Sept. 21. Hope this helps!
  6. Hi everyone, I'm kinda new only and posted a few times, I had VSG on 8/19 and so far everything has been going smoothly for my healing. I found these awesome little containers at my local Home Goods and I also saw them at TJ Maxx the same day and really wanted to share. (Yesterday 8/31/20) They were in the housewares section by the rest of the Tupperware style containers. I think they were $3.99 and it comes with 12 they are freezer, microwave, and I think dishwasher safe, although they are easy enough to wash by hand lol. They fit appropriately 1/3 cup (I measured) which is about 2.5 oz I believe. I plan on using them to freeze some shredded/pureed chicken for lunches when I go back to work. But I really wanted to share because they are cheap, reusable, and perfect size. 😁 Debbie.

    I’m riding the struggle bus.

My favorite protein bars are the Power Crunch brand. They're a little high in calories and fat, but I only have one a day and I LOVE them! They're wafer like bars and are deliciously crunchy and 13 grams of protein. The triple chocolate is 205 calories with 13 grams of fat (high I know, but I eat low to no fat in everything else so my nutritionist okayed it) while the peanut butter fudge one is 215 calories with 13 grams of fat and the chocolate mint is 220 calories with 14 grams of fat (the carbs are 10, 12, and 11 respectively).

What are you thankful for this week? - 8/31/2020

I am grateful to have made it to see my 40th birthday today. My baby boy only made it to see his 10th. I will turn 40 again next year and celebrate on someone's island! 🤭😉 I am grateful that I lost my grief weight of 40lbs, plus an additional 10, totaling 50lbs down by my 40th birthday. I am grateful for my family and friends, who love and support me.

    WORST DAY EVER.

    From the album: BEFORE

Christmas Eve 2019 - at my heaviest. My husband proposed to my 5 year old that I ice skate - I had just recovered from plantar fascitis and was still in pain, I debated even going but, thought my husband would not push me to get out on the ice - I was wrong. He did, I was too big, my knees too unsteady to assist a 5 year old and try to balance myself. I was deathly afraid that i would fall ontop of my daughter and hurt her. I cried and cursed him all the way around the rink - my daughter now HATES the thought of ice skating and every time she sees it in the movies or on tv she says to me "its ok mommy I hate skating anyway" :( I hate that I can't just make my self be better. I have beat alot of things in my life but, not this.

VSG to RNY due to Gerd

I had a VSG December 2019. In March ended up developing a hiatal hernia and severe GERD. It was so bad I was on protonix, Pepcid, ans Tums for the reflux. I had also developed intractable hiccups esophagitis from the GERD. I had a VSG to RNY on 8/11 so I’m only 3 weeks out. I will say that I don’t remember being in this much pain after my VSG but the GERD is pretty much gone as far as I can tell. Still on the protonix twice a day until I’m 3months post-op.

VSG to RNY due to Gerd

I had the sleeve done 10/19 and then had severe GERD about two months after and the doctor put me on omeprazole once a day then upped it to twice a day. Nothing helped. I also had a hilated hernia. So he decided to do the bypass on July 2020. About not even a day later I was having bleeding issues. So I had to go back in for surgery for them to fix it. So I had two surgeries in two days. I stayed in the hospital for a week. This was worse than the three c sections I had. Four weeks later and I’m still in pain. I’m not trying to scare you but just sharing my experience. My doctor said I was the 5% that this would happen to. So maybe I just had some bad luck that day I don’t know. I haven’t had to take any of my omeprazole. I haven’t had any GERD symptoms. So far it’s been worth it for that but otherwise I’m still figuring out if it’s been worth it altogether. Good luck in your decision!

But for the last 10 days I've been at 22 pounds. while my diet has not been absolutely perfect I'm averaging between 509 and 800 calories a day, how is it even physically possible that I am not losing weight my gosh if this is a plateau and I finally get over it I'm going to drop 10 pounds overnight hahaha. 14. You seem to be on the same track as me. I was 215 on day of surgery and now 3 months out and I weigh 184.5. So I have basically lost 10 pounds a month. Slow but hopefully it will stay off this way. Don’t get discouraged, it will happen for both of us!

    Hospital stay

10 years ago, had a sleeve. I was 54 years old with asthma. Stayed 2 nights to clear my lungs from anesthesia and make sure I was oxygenating well. I had surgery 100 miles away from my home, so stayed in local hotel just in case for two more days. Then home.

    Food Before and After Photos

Lunch/left-overs from dinner last night. My take on Philly cheesesteak stuffed peppers using Hatch green chili’s, stuffed with sautéed thin sliced beef, mushrooms, and onions, topped with a bit of reduced fat Mexican cheese blend. Left-overs from dinner last night. Very tasty 😋 Ate all of it. About 200 kcals and 19 G protein.

    Carbs and fats

I think the general feeling is to limit the carbs until you get closer to maintenance. Just getting the protein and fluids in is a major accomplishment for a long time, and then adding veggies and some fruit is more than enough. Adding carbs and fatty foods like nuts and nut butters can slow down your weight loss. I reached goal in 7 months, but did not even think of adding a grain based carb, nuts, or nut butters until then. Then I added them very gradually, to ensure I wouldn't start regaining. I am 18 months out now, and am eating a whole foods plant based (WFPB) diet now. I get all my protein in, but it comes from legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and non dairy milk/yogurt. I eat a lot of carbs now - but they are whole grains, legumes, fruits and veggies - nothing processed. I eat nuts and seeds every day. I also eat 8-10 servings of veggies/fruit every day, so I am NEVER hungry with that much volume. This all to say that there are a lot of different ways to eat after surgery, but initially, until you reach goal, you need to stick to your protein, water, legumes, veggies. The other stuff can come later. The first 6 months are where you are going to lose a lot of weight. The first year is the golden year, and you want to maximize the opportunity to lose as much as you can during that time. After 12-18 months (sometimes sooner, sometimes later), the weight loss will slow down, your body will start absorbing nutrients more easily, you will lose the tight restriction, and all your new lifestyle modifications will be the real tools you will use to maintain your new weight. The surgery gets the weight off, but you need to do the rest. Don't waste those first months. Hold off on maintenance foods like grain based carbs, starchy vegetables, and nuts/nut butters until you are ready to stop losing and start maintaining. Just my 2 cents worth. I'm sure others will have different ideas.

Recent RNY - How ya doing?

Hiatal hernia and RYN on 8/3 Stayed in hospital 4 nights due to damage to hernia. All good now no pain and walking 5 miles a day. Down 19 lbs. BUT today I have diarrhea TMI sorry and my stomach what’s left of it hurts hoping tomorrow is better
  21. I was sleeved on 8/19. Immediately after surgery, I was up doing laps around the hospital floor. I was sore, tired, and stiff, but I made myself do it. I went home the next day and could hardly move - even with Rx pain meds. Between gas, being full of fluids & air from the surgery itself, and pain from the incisions (esp. the big one) I was pretty miserable for about a week - then everything literally changed overnight. I woke up one day and felt GREAT. The big incision still hurts, but all of the gas is gone, all of the fluids & air they fill you up with are gone, etc. That said, I'm pretty sure I busted a stitch on the large incision, as of today I'm in agony, but just in that one spot. I'm back on Rx pain meds + an antibiotic and hope they do the trick. I felt like I was doing really, really well until then. Good luck!
  22. Like mentioned above, everyone loses at different rates. It has to do with age, starting bmi, metabolism, etc. I was 32 when I had my surgery and I turned 33 last month. I was 321 on my surgery date and had a BMI of 51.8. I lost 23 pounds the first month ( 19 the second, and then 18, 17, 7, 8, 10, and 7). I'm a slow loser, mostly due to my hypothyroidism. And having my meds adjusted twice already. 26 pounds is really good. Be proud of yourself as you're on track
  23. I don't look at 5 pounds any more. I look at half a pound at a time !!! And I celebrate every half a pound as a major victory - at 10 years out, I still have to remind myself where I STARTED 10 years ago. At 320 pounds. Now I am at 177. And each pound is a VICTORY ! Celebrate each victory !!!!

    Second Guessing This!

It looks like you have two separate issues: your surgeon/hospital, and the decision to have WLS. As some of the other replies have said, I think you should consider changing surgeons. You probably have other options, and you are a customer -- if you don't like the treatment you're getting, you have the right to go elsewhere (this, of course, depends on where you live and how your surgery is being funded). Getting WLS is not just about the cutting. It's a lifelong journey, and the followup visits are a big part of that. I've read that patients who go to all of their scheduled followups are more successful than those who don't. My program requires 8 followup visits in the first two years (once/year thereafter), and you probably don't want the hassle of going to such a disorganized office so many times. The most concerning thing to me is that you don't know which surgery you're getting. That is a pretty big deal, and you should be the one to make that decision, even though the surgeon may have strong recommendations. Now, he could refuse to do a certain procedure because it would be harmful to you, but you still have to agree to whatever procedure he does recommend. I actually wouldn't have a problem with the informal tone of his e-mail. Doctors are people, too. I bet some people like the fact that he acts like a normal person and doesn't insist on being addressed as "Doctor." When I was looking into surgery, I was concerned about the hospital's reviews, too, but it turns out that pretty much every hospital in my area has bad ratings. I suspect that very few people have good experiences at hospitals, because you only go to a hospital if you're sick or injured. There are always complaints about wait times (because there are a lot of patients), billing (because medical care is crazy expensive and billing is complicated), and outcomes (because not every patient can be saved, and sometimes it takes trial and error to solve problems). Now, about the decision to have WLS, I went through some very similar doubts before surgery. I lost over 60 pounds on my own before surgery, and I started to think, "Maybe I can keep going on my own instead of going through with this." I have yo-yo dieted most of my life, but I had never lost that much weight before. About 10 years ago, I lost 50 pounds and kept it off for several years, but I eventually gained it all back plus 30 more pounds. I took some pre-surgery pictures of myself the day before surgery -- after I had already lost over 60 pounds -- and that made me realize how far I have left to go. If I lose 100 pounds from my surgery weight, I'll still be obese. And every pound is a little harder to lose than the last, so the chances that I could lose that much without surgery are... slim. This is a very personal decision that you have to make for yourself, though, and if you're not ready to do it now, you can always wait and see how far you can get on your own. P.S. If you want your stats (like starting weight, weight lost, and surgery date) to show up when you post, you can click on your user name on the top right of the screen, then select "My surgery" under Settings.
  25. I realize there's unlikely to be a one-size-fits-all equation to measure one's weight loss progress objectively, but are there any guidelines, i.e.: With a starting weight on date of surgery of N, if I am weight Z at X days post-surgery, am I on target, ahead of schedule, or behind schedule? In other words, where am I? My medical team really hasn't given me any guidelines. When I entered the assessment program in June of 2019 I was 382. I was 337 on date of surgery July 13, 2020. So 6 weeks post-op I'm now at 311, a subsequent loss of 26 pounds since date of surgery, and a cumulative loss of 71 pounds since start of journey. I know that I'm prone both to diet cheating and being lazy, so I like to keep a bit closer tabs on progress than others might need to, so if I see myself falling behind, I know that I need to go back to shakes & soups for a while and/or get off my fat *ss and go for some extra walks. Thanks.
