    Oh, Just Another Plastics Story

ROFL. I guess I will be a self-pay, too. I guess it's not "enough" loose skin for insurance to pay (ok, I won't exclude being lucky so lets wait and see, I'm financially prepared already for the worst case though). I'm looking into the Avelar technique and would have to go to Austria then but I essentially cancelled all the thoughts about plastics (well, almost all thoughts...) when surgeons recommended a revision and told me to expect another 10% weight loss. 6.something kg doesn't sound that much but at a height of 167 cm it means more than two BMI points. However, I can have a mommy makeover myself then when the time comes around. Surgeons in Germany usually don't do breasts and tummy in one sitting when insurance covers the procedures because of how hospital stays are paid. (Germany's health care system is sick in its own special way.) ETA: Yes, gotta see the bright site of being a self-pay. One can get what's medically safe and not what some insurance company thinks they're going to pay for.
  2. Hey Y'all! Had surgery on Monday and I am so BLESSED!!! My doc was able to do my revision as well!! WhooHoo!!! I don't have to go back in August to get sleeved!!!! He said everything went really well, if long. I went in about 10:30 and made the recovery room (which I have no memory of!) about 1/1:15-ish. I did bleed enough for him to mention it but nothing overtly worrying. He was a little surprised was all. Said I had very little scar tissue so doing the revision was a no-brainer for him and he was happy to do it. Monday night was a little rough. I went too long between pain med doses and got in to a little too much pain/uncomfortablness with it. My BP spiked up to 168/115 and to say my nurse wasn't happy is an understatement. When she checked me again 2 hrs later, after the pain meds had kicked in, I was back in a good place again. Tuesday was good, drank my 2 oz of shake for Breakfast and again for lunch. Then they went ahead and gave me more at dinner since it was taking so long for the pharmacy to process my Rxs to go home. Didn't finish it b/c my wheelchair arrived and it was time to go home! Long trip home. An hour. In a 4x4 on big tires and cruddy mtn roads. Took more pain meds and went to bed! Slept well. Had some nausea this morning and dry-heaved for a bit. Called in and got an Rx for nausea. Hubby went and got that for me and I've been fine since. Getting ready to head to bed in a bit. My kindergartener has "graduation" in the morning and I think I'll be up for it! Very happy about that! I'll be doped up but I'll be there!!! So that's it in a nutshell. So glad to be on the other side of it all. Best wishes to all who are following!!!!

    My Lap Band Slipped

After a year and 100 pounds down, I started gaining weight again and found out my band slipped. My doctor opted to do the revision surgery and my insurance covered it do to the risks of not getting it done. Come to find out that when most surgeons do the band they take part of the stomach up over the band and suture it on both sides. My doctor only did one side so the other slipped up. My new doctor was able to get it back in position and get it tied down. He also put 4cc's in at that time. I am on the liquid diet again till i heal but I am so happy they where able to fix it for me without removing it. The lap band saved my life and sets backs or not, I owe my life to the band.
  4. I personally think it's ruder for someone to pretend that it'll be ok when you may be causing yourself real harm by going against your dr's orders. And you know what? It's not like I haven't done it myself (more than once) so I think I'm in the right place to tell someone who is cheating to stop doing it, for their own good. You're hungry? Hell, so were we ALL at that stage. It's not called bandster hell for nothing. Eating solids when you're not healed is like picking on a wound that's still raw. I'm NOT going to tell you it's ok. But if you still want to do it, who am I to tell you not to despite the advice you've been given. You own your own decisions, good or bad. I personally would rather someone was blunt and told me to stop doing something that may cause damage than tell me it's ok only to find out later that it made me need a revision. To me, support isn't all heart and flowers and lies to make you feel better. It's about telling you the truth so you know not to do it in case you cause yourself harm.

    Gastric Bypass vs. Sleeve

Bypass was never an option for me. I'd choose DS over RNY if I was forced to make that decision. Luckily, VSG was an option for my revision, I had to fight for it, but I got it. I was never interested in a malabsorptive procedure especially RNY. I figured the 2 years of malabsorption of calories and fat was not a fair trade off for a lifetime of malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins. Considering RNY patients only malabsorb for 18-24 months, I figured what the heck am I going to do for the rest of my life if I rely on malabsorption to get me to goal? Plus, I had a pouch with the band. My body hated the pouch. It's not natural, it didn't work for my body, and I knew RNY would give me the same pouch/stoma combo. Add in that only 30% of RNY patients dump with sugar, it just wasn't appealing. I've watched friend after friend have multiple long term complications with RNY. I can't count how many of them are deficient on some vitamin, one friend is going in for her 4th surgery related to her 7 yr old RNY pouch. This time, her intestines are twisted, and obstructed, and she's malnourished to the point of her teeth falling out because she malabsorbs so much of the nutrients she eats. For me, I just didn't want to deal with the long term complications that I've witnessed with friends in real life. I love having a normal, full functioning stomach. If VSG would not have been an option for my revision, I would have had my band removed, and stayed fat. Many patients win appeals for VSG. Work with your surgeon, and if your surgeon won't work with you, find a surgeon that will give you the surgery you want. You have to live with the surgery type for the rest of your life, not the surgeon. Best wishes, and don't give up or give in on getting the sleeve if you truly believe it is the best option for your long term health, and life goals.
  6. Have you already had your band removed, or are they doing the removal and revision at the same time? I am having my band removed and sleeve revision in one surgery (that's the plan anyway!) Aiming for the end of July! Good luck!! Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App I had my band removed in 2013! I had a terrible slip and was very very sick! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I got mine in October 2008. I also had a slippage in August 2013 and had it repaired. Should have had the revision done then. Grrrrr!! Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App
  7. I had a revision done on the 29th. From band to sleeve. So far I can tolerate almost anything. Except today I tried some watered down hummus and felt terribly sick after. That was the 1st real time I've had any nausea, or thought I might throw up. I'm terrified of vomitting, and rupturing a suture. I'm still struggling to get all my Water in. But so far, I've had blended Beans, oatmeal, avocado w/ plain Greek yogurt, and Protein shakes. Everything is blended super fine. Maybe the hummus was too thick still, or too heavy. Activity wise, I can walk around stores and the mall, but have to take it very slow, or I'll feel faint. I have a lot of head hunger, and feel like I need to chew things. Luckily, I haven't had much gas pains, walking seems to help. Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App
  8. I also got a sleeve on Mon. the 28th. They did a revision on me from the band to the sleeve. I think I'm doing ok, I am also having trouble getting enough liquids in. I feel full so easily. Also, do you know if it is normal to feel chilled all the time unless I have a ton of blankets on. My incisions are not infected, they seem fine, I know that is a symptom of infection. I'm sore also, but nothing I can't tolerate. I can't bend over and pick up anything from the floor and I hate sleeping on my back, but it is too uncomfortable to even try. Each day I'm sure will get better...I hope!
  9. I've said it before, but I think the surgery changes everything, so we aren't the "norm". I truly believe it changes our physiology. Like @@JamieLogical said, I have observed differently after being on these boards for almost 2.5 years. I have also observed the opposite with myself. Every time I stalled, increasing my calories would break the stall, and I would actually start losing again more consistently. I was at 1100 by the time I hit maintenance, and now maintain on 1300 calories. Anything over 1300 I gain. First off, great topic. ^^ Since my lap band in 09 to sleeve revision, other than when I first got out of the hospital(s) (big stall first 10 days due to IV Water retention), I haven't experience stalls because like @@Babbs I increased my calories when I enter one. Now of course, if I fall off the wagon (lap band days) due to improper fill, I'd gain weight but when I'm on program, that's been my experience too. I know everybody is different, but this works for me. Since we're on the subject, I used to watch food contests videos and always wondered how the heck do they eat so much and stay skinny? grrr Almost all of them think like this: If anything, it's an interesting watch.

    Driving after surgery?

Hello Elyssia I had to have a port revision because my port was too large for my body, it was bonking against my ribs (it is on the right side between my ribs and hip bone) being short that I am 5ft2 - it was causing constant pain, sleeping was painful, sitting was painful - pretty unhappy all the time. So that being said I had a "low profile" port put in, slightly lower than where the other one was. It is smaller and thinner and has made all the difference! It was an easy and quick surgery as well :wink5:

    Lap Band Removal

I just had mine removed on Mon due to many complications. It was originally placed in 2007. I was able to get it removed within 1 month of my decision to do so. Insurance tried to fight it was not medically necessary but I had plenty of documentation to show it was!!! My surgeon will not revise to another procedure for at least 3 months, longer if there was a lot of internal damage and/or erosion.
  12. I was banded 1/08. I lost ~125, then lost full, gained a bunch back, had revision surgery 10/09. I got back to a total loss of 110 then got preggers. Had an unfilled and gained most all back. My baby is 13 mos and I finally got a fill again this week. So now I'm down about 60 from original and 100 to get to goal. Exercise....just keeping the faith...that's me

    Any Washington State Sleevers?

I am in the Seattle area. I was a band to sleeve revision and a big fan of PSSC - Drs Landerholm and Billing changed my life!
  14. I was ready to make a deposit with Dr Aceves also and I think it is prudent to wait until Dec to get a feel for the lay of the land but I am anxious to move forward for a couple of reasons. 1. I want to to do this in the summer , 2 I am having a revision and will be having my band removed. Meanwhile I am gaining weight and I will need to buy new clothes soon. I would love to hear from anyone who has had the sleeve by Dr aceves' replacement. Lylabelle that sounds like an awesome weight loss. Just enjoy it. To Sphiderphish where is your doc?
  15. I just used UHC as an example of bariatric revision policies for my appeal. Here's what they say: Surgical revision or a second bariatric surgery is proven for inadequate weight loss if the original criteria for bariatric surgery (BMI, co-morbidities and patient selection criteria) continue to be met. Surgical revision of bariatric surgery is proven for complications of the original surgery, such as stricture, obstruction, pouch dilatation, erosion, or band slippage when the complication causes abdominal pain, inability to eat or drink or causes vomiting of prescribed meals. You can see it all on their web site at: https://www.unitedhealthcareonline.com/ccmcontent/ProviderII/UHC/en-US/Assets/ProviderStaticFiles/ProviderStaticFilesPdf/Tools%20and%20Resources/Policies%20and%20Protocols/Medical%20Policies/Medical%20Policies/Bariatric_Surgery.pdf

    Almost Died Fm Vsg Surgery.

I agree that 350 dollars is A LOT of money for your medical records! Unless you had 50 years worth the medical records copied out, it shouldn't have been more than at least 30 dollars (given that you had x-rays etc. included in the records, if not then it shouldn't have been more than about 5 dollars!) I'm not calling you a liar either. If they charged you 350 dollars you were MAJORLY ripped off! Medical Records Copying Charges Louisiana Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:1299.96 For records, a reasonable charge not to exceed: $1.00 per page for first 25 pages $0.50 per page for pages 26-500 $0.25 per page thereafter Plus handling charge of $25.00 Plus actual postage For x-rays, microfilm, electronic, and imaging media: Reasonable reproduction costs Plus handling charge of $20.00 for hospitals, $10.00 for other health care providers
  17. Im in Utah and looking to have the DS as my revision to my original bypass 16 years ago, who and where did you go if you do not mind me asking
  18. Please bear in mind that I am a very happy and very successful bandit now 9 years post-op. I do not regret my band, would do it all over again and if I ever have to have it removed, I would hope to have a replacement. When I was banded in 2006, it was a miracle surgery. And for some people, who accept that they will still have to work hard, it is just that. It was and still is for me. But over the years it has become clear that serious complications necessitating further surgery are much more common than originally thought, some of these are avoidable by careful eating and by not keeping the band tight; unfortunately others are beyond our control. We used to be warned about band slips, leaks and about ( very rare) erosion into the stomach tissue but it turns out that a build up of scar tissue round the band (causing it to tighten) is quite common. It can be very difficult to get the right level of restriction and some people are tempted to keep it tight enough to physically limit food, in fact it was once thought this was how it should be. But this causes food to back up into the oesophagus and that risks problems such as oesophageal dysmotility which may be irreversible. It can also damage the vagus nerve. Quite a number of doctors have stopped implanting bands as they found the removal rate was unacceptably high and it was too easy not to lose enough weight. Revision from band to sleeve is not uncommon! We still need lots of will power. The band makes it easier by dimming hunger, but it does nothing for head hunger and, contrary to popular opinion, it does not and should not physically stop us eating. If it does it is too tight! Having said all that, I love my band, I know many successful long term bandits in real life. My own experience has been good and so has that of almost all those I actually know and have met. But don't rule out bypass. For many people the element of malabsorption is a key factor.

    October Sleevers! Announce Yourselves

so I went into the hospital yesterday morning for my revision.. band to sleeve. I was so excited so when I woke up from anesthesia the surgeon told me he could not do the sleeve because my stomach was so damaged from the band. so I have been banned rebuild and he says we could try in 6 months and possibly be healed he said there was no way he was going to touch my stomach with staples. I would have leaked for sure. I'm home and disappointed but I'm glad that he took the band out of me.
  20. I am scheduled for Monday, August 24. I am on day 2 of a five day clear liquid diet. I'm not so much hungry, but I am kind of weak. I have been making and drinking homemade broths. I see a lot of you have protein included in your diet - my Dr. said nothing about protein only clear liquids and I have been wondering about not getting enough protein. I am very nervous and excited (at the same time) about the surgery. My Mother had a revision from the Sleeve to Rny n April and had several complications - she is still not feeling up to par. So, all those complications are in the back of my head and making me anxious. Btw, I am in Pittsburgh.

    October Sleevers! Announce Yourselves

Hey everybody! I'm scheduled for a revision on October 3 with Dr. Chris Sanborn. I initially lost 75 pounds with the band, and started having problems and gained it all back plus some. I'm in my pre-op diet now, and yes I'm starving. lol I think it's interesting that every doctor is different with what they require on their pre-op diets. I'm very excited for my revision that I can hardly contain myself. lol
  22. Oregondaisy

    Nervous and excited

With the sleeve you can eat whatever you want after the post op diet. I do have trouble telling when I am full. I have to stop eating by looking at the portion and knowing how much I can eat. If I eat until I am full at the table, I am too full and uncomfortable 15 min. later. There are a lot of us who are band to sleeve revisions and we are all thrilled to be rid of the band. As far as I know, there are only a couple of people who have trouble eating early in the day. I have been able to eat and drink right away from day 2 of surgery. I had to force myself to slow down when I was in the hospital, because I was supposed to only drink 2 oz every 15 min. I could have easily drank whatever they put in front of me. Feel free to ask anything. We are all glad to help. I revised to the sleeve after I gained 15 lbs back from having my band unfilled. I was a self pay though.
