October Surgery Roll Call
PollyEster replied to Panda333's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started my preop diet on 5 May 2019 and tend to think of this date as my anniversary, rather than my actual surgery date of 15 Oct 2019. Since May 2019 I've lost about 140lbs; 90lbs of this was after being sleeved. I lead a very busy, very active life and my goal weight is within sight, but it's more important to me to be fit, strong, and healthy, which I now am. Before becoming MO, I was a competitive athlete, and am again able to participate in sports and fitness the way I used to. There have been dozens of NSV's, and I'm grateful for every one of them. My focus continues to be on the psychological adjustments and actions required to permanently change my habits and behaviors. Since the coronavirus lockdown, I've continued to strictly follow an eating and exercise schedule so that I remain on track. With so much uncertainty at this time, what I put in my mouth and do with my body are one of the few things within my control right now. Congrats and well done to all my fellow Oct sleevers. -
A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

quote=insubordination;571722]

Huge NSV for me. I was so worried about this. I stand by my choice of aisle. Awesome! I wouldn't have tried the tray table either! I look forward to the day I don't have to ask for the extender. I am tired of being embarassed! By the way, what does NSV stand for? April: I have to start my pre-op diet tomorrow. It is low calorie and virtually no carbs. I also have to cut my meal portions in half. I am relieved that it is not a liquid diet! I have done Atkins before so I am familiar with low carb. I was wondering about cheating too but I am going to try my damndest to stay on track. I don't want my doctor to say my liver is too fatty to do the surgery. I am waiting to find out if my insurance will approve in the meantime which doesn't help my stress level. Usually stress makes me eat more not less lol. But I am going to keep coming to these boards and getting the encouragement I need. I count myself very lucky because I don't have to go liquids only! Good luck and know that I am in the same boat with you. Keep posting and we will encourage each other! *Trisha* -
Hello fellow May 31st sleevers! How is everyone doing? How much have you lost? How about NSV's? Any foods you aren't tolerating or any issues? Hope to hear from everyone!!!

Weight at a stand still
Derp replied to Amandasaouma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hit major stalls at pretty much every "10 lb lost" mark. The longest stall was 2 months, and it made me so mad! My doctor helped me through it though - he told me to stop worrying about the numbers on the scale, and to use it to just make sure I'm not gaining in a significant way. And that's how I use the scale to this day. NSVs are way more fun anyway! OMG, I remember one week I went up 5 lbs, and it P'd me off so bad - I wasn't even eating solid foods yet. Granted, it was the week before the start of my menstrual cycle, but still. For the first year, the numbers on the scale didn't move to match the changes I saw in the mirror, and it was so frustrating. I had a lot of anxiety over my 2 month stall (at 214 lbs, I'll never forget it). I kept saying to myself, "IS THIS IT??" Long story short: don't worry! -

Diets we used to be on, and why they didn't work
dmh102 replied to Skywalker's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So true. I lost ALOT of weight on MANY of the diets I tried. I could lose, just not for long. And what I lost in 3 months could be gained back in a week, no joke! Among those I've tried: Jenny Craig ... Grew tired of the packaged food quickly, and was discouraged by the very slow losses. New Direction and Optifast ... These worked great, as they were liquids only; gained it all back as soon as I went back to work. The Diet Center ... I did this plan a couple of times. It worked extremely well the first time (back in the late 80's) and I thought I could stick with the new eating lifestyle forever; I couldn't. Atkins ... Also worked well, but same issue as above. Diet pills ... They were ok when I was younger; less tolerance for them and less results as I got older. Plus I would get too snappy. Hcg ... Actually would work well, just could never stick with it long enough to get to goal. Nutrisystem .... See Jenny Craig above, The Beverly Hills Diet ... Does anyone remember that one? Or am I giving away my age? Lol. Anyway, I fainted and gave up on that. Those are just my majors, lol. I had tried probably every diet out there before being saved by the band. My biggest NSV with the band is the freedom of mind from the dieting mentality I lived with every day since my teens. . Me too. I could never understand why I could gain the weight back so quickly. I forgot about Diet Center I did that one too. All the money involved with all these diets wow! I still find myself being drawn into any ad I see for weight loss. I think to my self maybe I should try that one. I have to stop myself and remember I have done something about it lap band surgery. Old habits are hard to break I guess. -
Tyler as a obese male 46 yrs of age I couldn't care less who knows and who doesn't. I have had serious health issues for the past year that required three hospitalizations. At my highest I weighed 451lbs last April. I made the decision to have the Lap Band surgery last August for my family and me. I have had nothing but support from family, friends and co-workers. In the last year I have two co-workers and a personal friend that has begun the Lap band journey since I had my surgery. I have also given some info out to about 6 others who ask me about Lap Band surgery. It is a personal preference to tell people or not. You do what is best for you and your family and try not to worry what others may think. I have heard so many negative comments about my size my whole life that if some one wants to say something stupid now, more power to them. I don't care what they think. My kids tell all their friends that they won't be able to call me Big Unc for much longer. They are so proud of me and that's what matters to me. I would like to share one more thing before I go. I had a NSV yesterday that wasn't planned. As I was walking past my Daughter she hugged me and said "Pop, I can finally get my arms completely around you for the first time in my life". I had never really thought about it but she was right. I can't explain how great I felt at that exact moment in time. Life is Great!

First Ever Nsv Only 6 Days Out From Surgery!
mylifeinpink posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am so so so happy and blessed to report that my feet do not hurt anymore at all! I had such bad edema and plantar facitis, I was seeing a physical therapist 2 days a week for the pain! Pain is GONE! 21lbs down, and I am feeling very good about my surgery! I have a slight feeling that this is going to be the very best investment I have ever made in myself! -
#hashTag# as "we" on the board always/should say - all docs are different check/ask your doc or NUT - they will tell you if/when you can have coffee - maybe decaf for me, i was allowed coffee at 2 months there have been other threads discussing issues of coffee not trying to get rid of you but go to the search area on top of your screen, and put in the word coffee when i am out and about i enjoy going through the drive through and grabbing a refill and my small NSV i never ask for a donut, and i'm ok with that no profile/ticker hint, hint so i can't tell what stage you are in "sounds" like you are still pre-op...........or maybe very early PO??? so,,, either good luck with WLS - speedy recovery, or keep up the good work!!! or i'll just say - continued good luck with life kathy

All of you are doing wonderfully! Even when the scale's not moving, remember it's not going UP like it would have in preband days! You're probably getting NSVs (non-scale victories) that you're not even aware of yet. Have you tried your rings on lately? Been able to tie your shoes without passing out? Clothes getting looser? Don't look for the closest parking spot anymore? Your face doesn't get all red, and you're not huffing and puffing as much? Able to vacuum the house w/o having a heart attack? Shave your legs easier? (You'll think of many, many more!)

sleep Apena NSV I found out last June that I had sleep apena and started using the CPAP machine about a month before being banded. I had a pressure setting of 12 and now down to a 7. I have lost close to 50lbs since being banded 6 months ago. I have been having problems with to much air etc. along with not wearing the mask the whole night. I talked to the doctor about it and he suggested that we try using a dental device instead. Insurance approved me for the device and I have started to use it and it is great. Here are pictures of the device. The dentist who deals only with sleep apnea feels that this device will work for me and that she wants to do a sleep study in about 4-6 months to ensure that it is working. If it is working then I will not need to use the CPAP. Well you're certainly entitled to an opinion, but I disagree with it. I think mental health is every bit as important as physical and the discrimination and stigma that come from being morbidly obese are valid reasons for surgery, they are every bit as serious a comorbidity as high blood pressure. Its such an ignorant way to view the whole thing, to completely disregard mental health and the effects of obesity on mental health. Hmm, standard cosmetic surgery only affects your looks? Surely having bags of silicone put into your chest, necessitating several repeat surgeries as they degrade and making future mammograms to detect things like breast lumps very very difficult all for the sake of having bigger breasts is every bit as risky as bariatric surgery. Especially the lap band. Managed properly and with a bit of luck that you wont be one of the small percentage that experiences probl4ms, a lap band does NOT compromise your nutrition and health, and I'd hazard a guess its much less risky than carrying round a few silicone implants. We all know the health horrors that have occurred due to breast implants. I dont particularly care to stick toxins in my face either or slice bits of my face all for the sake of looking younger. I'd rather look healthy and fit (as a result fof my lap band surgery and the immeasurably healthier lifestyle that has followed it) but look my age than be overweight and lacking in energy and get up and go but having a nipped and tucked face. And I dont think there's many women around who can say totally honestly that vanity played no part whatsoever in their decision. Come on! So many of our NSV's are about superficial things like going down in sizes and such.

my nsv for today, its more of a confidence thing...yesterday we went to disneyland. even when i was bigger, i would always try to brainwash myself into thinking that i didn't care what others thought about me. deep inside i did. i would be embarassed to go out to public places like those, thinking that other people were thinking "what is that skinny guy doing with that cow?" well, i have to say, i had the most fun ever yesterday with my husband, and didn't EVER think people were judging me! i love the pictures we took, ill put them up soon, and from looking at them, i can't believe how far i've come. its one of the best feelings in the world... -
How can you tell you lost weight?
LisaMergs replied to NatashaSaysRawr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Here is a NSV 7 days post op- this am in my closet for the heck of it I grabbed a pair of size 20 Capri jeans I couldn't get over my hips let alone ZIP 4 weeks ago. Guess what? I'm wearing them right now!!! And they look good on me!!!! Yahoo! -
NSV's ??? Where do I start ? From the minute I wake up is the start of a NSV because no more sleep apnea ! Getting showered and nicely dressed is a pleasure , not a challenge because of my weight. Clothes look and fit waayyy better. All day, no more digestive issues, everything works normally. I enjoy talking to people because they are happy to talk to me, I think the self confidence comes through. I love my exercise classes ( swimming and Pilates ) because I can see and feel my body getting stronger and more toned. My pants are getting loose. Again. I can do everyday normal things wihout even thinking about it. Yep, EVERYDAY is a NSV for me !!!!

LapBand VS Sleeve??
sistasassy replied to ghannouge's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I recently read another thread similar to this one - minus the feud - and I feel the same way about this one as I do the other one. There are statistics and numbers out there for every form of WLS on the market. We really have no idea how they actually reach those results and what the inclusive or exclusive parameters are. I think we each have to make our own decision about what surgery is right for us. My doctor let me choose. I chose the band and have not regretted my decision. I work hard at eating right but do allow myself a great treat once a week. I think that, ultimately, this is about the way it works with each type of surgery. I am happy for all of us who have found our own path and for some of us who have had to find a new path because our original path was not the solution. We are all here with the same common goal...to lose weight and keep it off. I think it would be awesome if we could put our differences aside and focus on that one goal. I, for one, am celebrating many NSVs right now since I have lost close to 65 pounds (does not matter what type of surgery I had)! I have more to go but I am diligently working towards my goal. I am excited for those who have lost weight on other surgeries as well! Look how far we have all come!
