  1. I'm not on regular food yet, but if I try to sip too soon after eating something soft like yogurt, I'll get nauseous. There're also the issues of sending food through your stomach more quickly and potentially stretching out your stomach if you eat and drink at the same time.
  2. Oh! Thanks! I hate crushing my multi and calcium. I started with applesauce and I have been using yogurt but my sleeve seems to be getting tired of that too. It is harder to get it down as the days go. I will be trying this!

I'm a horrible snacker at work

To get rid of cravings you have to get rid of all sweet things in the diet. Snack on protein at work. Don’t allow a carb snack if at at all, then only at home after dinner. At work, consider that you just need fuel and make yourself un-hungry by eating protein. Ex. String cheese, or baby bel cheese smoked salmon rolled up around cream cheese with capers in it pure parmesan ‘crackers” that are nut crunchy cheese, no carbs sliced roast beef or turkey (can roll it up over a slice of pickle) greek yogurt plain full fat with protein powder and a bit of coconut water splashed in to be able to mix and give the tiniest sweetness. Best is to eat protein all the middle of the day. Starchy carbs are great for your gut bugs and will help you sleep, so save them for after or part of your dinner. protein keeps me from craving. Carbs make me crave carbs.

Merry Christmas everyone! Made a ricotta bake today this is the first time I felt any restriction after about 3 oz. Up until today I could do protein shakes, drinks, puddings very easy. Can even eat a whole yogurt with out any discomfort. Im glad I finally felt full I was starting to wonder if I ever got sleeved! kidding of course. Hope you all are doing well.

    Which recovery was worse?

I could have easily handled administering a test at a week out....but you really don't know, because everyone's body is so different. I had no nausea, very little pain, pretty good energy, and no issues with getting my fluids/protein drinks in. Some people really struggle and you never know which way it's gonna go for you. I had no problem walking 3-5 miles per day immediately after surgery. But again....everyone is individual. When people ask how much time they should take off, I think 2 weeks is minimum for anything that requires important thinking....and 3 weeks is better. It's not that you're so physically miserable, it's just hard to adjust to eating that few calories and functioning. I think waiting until you're adding in yogurt, hot cereal, pudding, etc....is a really good idea. You feel much more like yourself and can think more clearly.

    Need advice on foods!!

I am allowed plain yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, tuna, scrambled eggs, and avocados however all of these thing give me a really bad stomach ache!! I see that most people have been able to move up fairly easily but I am really struggling. [emoji24]

I was on clear liquids for about 4 days (broth, water, tea, sf popsicles), and now I'm on regular liquids, including the protein shakes. The nutritionist told me if I could suck it through a straw, it was the right consistancy. I like to cook, so I've been making vegetable soup with beans or lentils, and then liquifying it in the blender. I add more broth if I need to thin it out (my nutritionist gave this the thumbs up). It's been working really well for me - it's liquid but it tastes like real food, and it lets me get in things like spinach, carrots, squash and beans. But it usually looks pretty gross (brown water). I stir in a flavorless whey powder before I eat it for added protein (don't heat it with the whey powder or it curdles). If you have things you like and you can liquify them, it will probably work, just check it with your nutritionist to make sure. A lot of people get drinkable yogurt, or make their own by mixing greek yogurt (higher protein) with almond milk or something like that to make it watery. If you have a sweet tooth you can usually add stevia.

    First week post op

This is good to hear (good for me, sorry!) because I get that my body is in major healing mode but downing a protein shake this morning was super difficult and I began to worry. I’m glad to hear I don’t have to follow all the regulations at once. Also jealous that you get cottage cheese and yogurt!!! I can only have liquids. It’s rough on the holidays. I’m trying not to be a bitchy because of my emotional hanger but it’s like my default.

    Pre Op diet disaster

I think the point of the liquid diet is to prepare you mentally for what's to come. Right now, you can cheat a little and nothing horrible will happen (unless you don't shrink your liver and your doctor decides not to do your surgery....it's happened) But here's the problem.... Immediately after surgery, you have about two to three days where you don't ingest ANY calories...just clear fluids. Then, you're on shakes and clear liquid for TWO MORE WEEKS. You'll get like 400 calories a day if you're lucky. And If you screw up and eat something AFTER surgery? You can really hurt yourself and end up needing emergency surgery for whatever you get stuck. My doctor did a talk about all the horror stories of his career....the stupid things people ate and the trouble they got into. Not good. AVOID THIS. You're just getting started. For me, it was the post surgical period where I nearly gnawed my own arm off. LOL But yeah...that MONTH of freakin starvation just sucked. It really did. Honestly....it was much harder (in my opinion) than the actual surgery. But the good news...is that you will survive it. And you'll drop quite a few pounds to soothe your misery. And you'll be eating yogurt and cream of wheat before you know it. I was on the liquid diet for Thanksgiving and cooked for my family. OMG...so hard! For Christmas, though...I get to eat finely cut up turkey and mashed potatoes. And it sounds like heaven. You all have my sympathies. Stay strong!

    Week 2 diet confusion

I'm halfway into my second week as well. I barely take 4 half spoons of creamy soup or jello and get get that pain or rummbin feeling in my stomach. I been living on broth, ice pops, I started thinned less sugar oatmeal, yogurt and thinned creamy soups. No protein powder or shakes. I hope I'm doing this right!

    Week 2 diet confusion

For now, do whatever you've gotta do to meet or exceed your daily protein goal. A full liquid diet includes all liquids on the clear liquids list, as well as all liquids that aren't see-through (e.g. milk, shakes, puddings, yogurt, sorbet, cream soups, etc.).
  14. Hi all- My surgeon's post-op plan allows 1-2oz pureed/mushy soft, high protein meals at days 3-14. For example: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, canned tuna, ground chicken and ground turkey. The "pureed/mushy" phase is combined and there is no separation regarding pureed vs mushy foods. I am almost 5 days post-op from VSG and so far, so good. I've had soup that's been pureed, greek yogurt with 1/2 slice of canned peach (in fruit juice, not syrup) pureed, canned chicken salad. There have been ZERO issues in terms of nausea/vomiting/discomfort and my serving size is 1oz at a time. I am close to meeting fluids goals and am hovering around 55 fl. oz/day. Still working on meeting 40mg protein/day requirement and am drinking one supplement shake/day and using GENEPRO too. Overall I just feel hesitant about my eating. My concern is that I see there is quite a variation of post-op diet plans and most people are on liquids/full liquids for some time immediately post-op and my plan allows me to sorta bypass that stage. I will be sure to bring-up my concerns at my 1st follow-up appt. next week, but for the time being should I just continue doing what I am doing since I've had no issues.....yet?
  15. She really can't eat much at only 11 days out by Christmas. I was on cream soups, cottage cheese, yogurt, and sf pudding. That doesn't give much leeway for holiday food choices. And she will not know how her sleeve will react to any new food, especially in a social situation. You can say you picked up a UTI and the antibiotic upsets your stomach - so the doc said you should stick to yogurt to get your gut bacteria back in shape. And when I'm better I would love some of your lasagne so I'm going to take some home and freeze it if that's okay with you?
  16. Hi Everyone! I am overdue for an update, and finally have some time to sit down and write so here's my end-of-December report. Since my ESG on Nov 8, and as of this morning, I am down almost 20lbs (yay) and feeling fantastic. Best accomplishments this week - and admittedly these are very superficial - getting into my "skinny" jeans, and being able to cross my legs comfortably. Biggest challenge: The loss has slowed down. The scale didn't budge all week until this morning, when I finally lost another lb. I know this is to be expected but still frustrating and I know that I really need to ramp up the exercise now to keep it going. My calories are already low (I average between 800-1000/day) so not much give there. Another challenge came yesterday when, for the first time, I really felt like eating more so than I have so far. As snacks throughout the day I had 1oz raw almonds, a protein shake, and 1oz of string cheese. On Tuesday I went in for my one month appointment with my doc - this was the first time I've seen her since the procedure. On the office scale, where I'm weighed in in clothes and after eating and drinking all morning, I was down 17lbs. Doc said I was doing great - above average in the weight loss. I will see her in another month. I'm cleared to add all forms of exercise. And even though I am allowed to add in some starch this week, she said I should stay away from carbs to help keep the weight loss going, so I'm all for that. And one of the best things now- I have real coffee in the morning! ☕ Here's yesterday's day of food as an example: Breakfast: (same every day:) 4oz Fage plain greek yogurt with 1oz blueberries/real vanilla & truvia added. 2 cups Coffee w FF coffee mate Snack: protein shake Lunch: 4oz 1% cottage cheese Snack: 1oz cashew butter or 1oz raw cashews Snack: 1oz string cheese Dinner: Turkey burger (Jenny-o - about 2.5oz cooked/180cal) and 2.5 oz steamed spinach. snack: protein shake total cals for day = 931 That's about it for now- happy to answer any questions as always. Have a great holiday everyone! AmyA

I notice it more with certain things. Liquids don't do it to me anymore, but when I eat yogurt, there goes my stomach!

    Eating months after the surgery

I'm two and a half weeks out. I can eat about 4 ounces at a time. Last night for dinner, I had one cluster of crab legs and two little pieces of boiled potato. Hubby had the other three clusters, the corn on the cob and the sausage in the crab boil pot. The crab meat and potatoes went down great...felt full and was comfortable in my new tummy. I can eat most of a small tub of yogurt in one sitting. I can eat an envelope of oatmeal in one sitting.

    Having hard time sleeping

Nope. You didn't hurt anything. Next time you want to try foods, stick with the next foods on your list. Try a little oatmeal or yogurt....leave the pecans for a while down the road:)

It's post op day 14 for me; I had a lap sleeve. Down about 8 pounds, on full liquids. In one week I get to go to purée! I did cheat today though and had some low fat vanilla Greek yogurt. It was delicious and I found out my sleeve holds about half a cup of yogurt before I feel full. It was great to get in some protein from a source besides shakes. Congrats on your weight loss! And I'm glad you enjoyed the cream soup! I have a whole new appreciation for food after the pre op diet and now post op.

2 wks post, soft food help!

Cottage cheese, yogurt, beans, tofu, homemade soups, split pea soup. I'm two and a half weeks out, I eat rotisserie chicken in broth and soup cut up really fine. Plans differ so wildly... Just make sure you're eating enough calories, and getting your protein and fluid goals. All is well:) Be patient. I'm gonna have finely chopped up turkey, mashed taters and gravy at Christmas. I do a lot of smoothies and put some leafy greens and fruit in there (watch the sugar and calories)
  23. Genepro is an awesome unflavored protein powder. My RD recommended it. I stir it into yogurts and I’ll blend it into my Premier Protein shakes (brings the total protein up to 45 grams). I will blend it into my soups as well but I make sure the soup isn’t too hot. Genepro is only 1 tablespoon vs. some protein powders require 1/4 cup. It’s pricey but so worth it!
  24. Knocked out Nutrition Class #5 of 6.  We covered the pre- and post-op diet, and I am THRILLED to report that I get to eat real food pre-op!  Four meals a day with 4-6 ounces lean protein, veges and salad (and 2T dressing), plus 3 fruits or yogurts a day.  Now that December is almost over, I am getting excited again.  :)

      Hey @FluffyChix

I have a 7th appt one-on-one with nutritionist, so technically I have 7 appts, too. I have my date -- March 14th. I keep waiting for someone to start a March 2018 thread -- hey, a girl can dream!!!

Do you know what your pre-op is? All protein shakes is an option for us -- LMAO -- who would pick that? Granted, if that is what they recommended, I would absolutely do it, just not CHOSE it.

    2. FluffyChix

      FluffyChix

Why don't you start the thread girlie? :D My pre-op is 2 weeks of liquid protein. I can have 1 of them per day that has 1 oz of frozen spinach and 1oz of frozen blueberries and 5g of psyllium. LOL. Livin' the dream. Livin' the dream! I think you should do it for no other reason than to be my supportive bud. ;) hehehe!

    3. Apple203

      Apple203

Thats basically my everyday breakfast -- except I opt for flax seed instead of psyllium. YOu'll rock it -- you've done great so far, like poster-girl territory for your nutritionist, I am sure!

    Post surgery check list

I was allowed Greek yogurt right after surgery, along with sugar free jello, pudding or popsicles/fudgesicles. I had those on hand along with chicken broth (I don't like beef), Vitamin Water Zero, some Crystal Light to flavor water and my protein shakes.
