  1. I did make sure to get all my protein in, and I ate NO junk, no processed food. I tried to make every single bite as nutritionally dense as possible. I made soups, green berry smoothies, ate a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese, home grown pumpkin and garden veggies, some fish, a little fruit (like 1/2 apple or a mandarin orange.) I was also using lentils and other legumes, as well as still using some protein powder. No grain based carbs, no nut butters, very limited fruit. I reached goal very quickly and have maintained now for a year. I am now plant based and do not even try to count calories any more. I still get about 60 gm of protein a day, but I eat whatever I want now and as much as I want. I am never hungry. Mind you, I get in about 10 servings of fruits/veggies a day, eat a moderate amount of whole grains, plenty of legumes, nuts and seeds, but no sugar, simple carbs, processed or junk food, No soda, no alcohol, no caffeine. Never felt better, have tons of energy, no pain, no sleep apnea. Blood pressure is normal now, and my fatty liver is now normal. Cholesterol plummeted to 152, as did my LDL and triglycerides. Losing over 100 pounds made a world of difference - a whole new life. But going whole food plant based (WFPB) took it to a whole new level of health and wellness. My other fat life seems like a distant dream now - and I'm never going back there! Bottom line - success at lifelong weight loss means making lifelong changes in food choices, habits, exercise patterns, and lifestyle. We must let go of the things that made us fat in the first place, and embrace the new things that will bring us success for the long term. It can be a scary journey, but worth every step!
  2. I’m 10 months post op and I STILL have to take small sips. It takes me a full work day to drink my smaller jug of water(it’s maybe 32 oz total or 24 I’m not sure) but I have to take small sips or it’ll hurt really bad. Hang in there! Congrats btw !
  3. your primary care physician can order it. in my case, my insurance doesn't cover them unless you're 60+ years old - but maybe they would have if I'd have explained it was for a baseline due to an upcoming bariatric surgery. However, I found out through doing one of those scans they often do at sports labs (at universities) and commercial places - I went there to see what my fat percentage was when I was trying to decide whether to go into maintenance or lose another 10-20 lbs. You can get those at any age since you pay for it (although I think I was able to charge it to my flexible spending account, now that I think of it...). I was 58 years old at the time, but there's no age requirement. The scan gave me that info (fat percentage), but it also gave me my bone density. The technician couldn't tell me I had osteoporosis because they're not supposed to diagnose things, but she did say my bone density looked a "bit below average" and I that I might want to mention it to my PCP. Well, I sent the scan over to my PCP, and she saw right away that I had osteoporosis and got me into treatment (at that point, my insurance would have covered a scan even though I was under 60, because I'd be diagnosed with it. I've since had a couple of other scans that my PCP ordered). your insurance may not have that age requirement, though. Or even if they do, if you're doing it to get a baseline for bariatric surgery, they might cover it regardless. Just talk to your PCP.

    Weight lost question

a lot of people leave the hospital heavier than when they went in. Some up to 10 lbs heavier. It's the IV fluid. Like the above poster said, it takes a few days for it to work its way out of your system - but then you'll be on your way!
  5. Well it has been 16 days post op and although the acid reflux does not hurt as bad it is still there. It is hard for me to drink protein drinks as that sets it off more. And my stomach pain has been gone sense day 10 but for some reason it is back now on my left side and it stings. Hopefully it is nothing serious
  6. Aside from unnecessary/unwanted carbs, is pasta actually bad for you? As in, will it tear up your sleeve or make you sick? I’ve literally had probably less than 50 carbs in the last 3 weeks (surgery was 8/19) and I’ve had issues eating & drinking period. Can minimal carbs really be that terrible? The only response I’ve gotten from my dietician is that “pasta should be avoided”, but she refused to be specific as to why.

    Weight lost question

Your weight loss depends on a lot of factors including your pre-op weight. The less you have to lose the slower the weight will come off. Also, you had a revision and revisions tend to lose slower. That doesn't mean it's not going to come off, it'll just likely come off a lot slower than you would like. Also, you may still have some fluid from your surgery. From my own experience it took about 10 days to get rid of that fluid so give yourself a few more days and I'm sure you'll drop a few more pounds. Congrats on your new surgery and I wish you the best!
  8. It’s normal to be worried. Just over 7 years ago, I laid on the bed about to be wheeled into surgery and they brought my little kids ages 3 and 7 in to see me. I tried to be strong while they were there and I think I succeeded pretty well, but after they left, my eyes filled with tears. I was thinking thoughts similar to yours and also, “If I die, will they grow up hating me for eating myself to the point where this surgery was my only option?” The nurse knew what I was thinking without me saying a thing and said “You’re doing this for them, so you can be a better mom.” Or something to that affect, and she was right. She reassured me that I was in good hands and I calmed down and went through with it. I have NEVER regretted my surgery. Even when I messed up and gained back 50 pounds (which I have lost again plus 10 more thanks to my tool!) It’s literally one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I’ve had so much fun with my family the last 7 years that wouldn’t have been possible if I had backed out. You’ll be ok. In a year you’ll most likely say it’s one of the best things you’ve ever done, too!

    Anyone for August 2020

Sleeved 8/19 - First road trip for work this past week. Lessons: 1 - Mini Crab Cakes are DELISH - Ordered an appetizer and that was dinner for 3 nights! 2 - Pack your food if possible - Just easier - Tuna packets are awesome. 3 - Quest protein bars are VILE - I mean, VILE and hit your stomach like a brick @ 3 weeks out! 4 - Quest protein tortillas are AWESOME (taco flavored) - Loved the crunch/texture and half a bag satisfied my urges. 5 - For some reason it was a hella lot harder to get in my water on site (and took 4 bottles with me every day) 6 - When you go out to eat and they put water in front of you before your meal it's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to not take a sip! - Had to put the glass across the table. Felt very odd. 7 - My workmates are awesome - Told everyone and not one person tried to pressure me into anything. 8 - The "beast" (my stomach) appears to have been tamed! 9 - Think I've hit the infamous stall and SO HAPPY to have seen so many warnings about it on here. Hope everyone is doing fantastic!
  10. July 2019 I had a sleeve surgery lots of complications had a revision to bypass done February 2020. Been recovering and healing at home but obviously with the pandemic not a whole lot of socializing happening. Now my family (large extended) has figured out a location and way to have a get together and still be able to ensure safety as much as possible. This is taking place tomorrow afternoon. I am a little nervous about when it’s time to eat. My family shows love with food and lots of it. (And based on the fact that I started this journey at 350+lbs you can probably guess they don’t always prepare the most healthy food choices). I plan to make sure that I avoid the food area as much as possible and to drink my water and will have my nausea medicine in case there is anything that sets my stomach off. I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings by not eating their food but I have absolutely no interest in making myself sick or binging on bad for me food. I am sure I will be okay and am just having a case of nerves since the is my first “party” situation since I started the process of having wls and even though it’s all family I am worried someone is going to be watching every bite I put in my mouth. Someone, anyone please tell me I’m not crazy and it’s normal to be worried how it’s going to go.
  11. I’m two weeks out, I’ve only lost 10 pounds TOTAL, that includes the liquid diet. Sigh!! And I assume all of the IV fluid weight is gone, so I’m just not really losing. However, I have a pair of skinny jeans I try on every day to check the fit and they are definitely looser. So there’s that. It is frustrating to not see the scale move though. I went to my first appointment and my doctor asked how much weight I had lost and I was embarrassed because it was basically nothing.

    7 days post opp

Yeah, eight days out and I just started purees. I do feel MUCH better. I have almost no pain now, A teeny bit, but not even enough to bother with Tylenol. I just put my heating pad on my tum and it works well manage my pain. So far I have made a pureed black bean soup, whipped cauliflower mashed potatoes with chives and LF cream cheese, smoked tuna pate and sugar free jello pudding, which I added dark cocoa powder and cinnamon, whipped it for 10 min, poured into 4 oz containers that i had spread 1TBSP of all natural no sugar peanut butter into the bottom and put it into the freezer to set. came out sort of like a mouse! I used 1% milk. The tuna "pate" is a can of chunk light tuna in water, undrained, 2 TBSP lowfat cream cheese, slices of red onion chopped, a couple of dashes of Liquid Smoke and salt/pepper to taste. I threw it all into a food processor and ground it until it was as smooth as hummus. I thought it came out pretty good as well.
  13. yes - normal. You were pumped full of IV fluids in the hospital and likely left heavier than when you arrived. Some people "gain" up to 10 lbs while in the hospital. It takes a few days to work its way out of your system this is why I don't like it when people compare their weight loss with others, and why I hesitated to respond to the OP's question - although I put it out there regardless because I was a "slow loser" from the get-go, so I figured it might be OK for people to see that I was below average in the rate-of-weight-loss dept, yet I lost all of my excess weight ANYWAY. Your level of commitment to your program has FAR more influence on your ultimate success than your rate of weight loss ever will. Regardless, this may or may not be your problem. You may be more of an "average" loser or even a fast one. It's too early to tell. But right now, it's the IV fluid weight that you've dealt with. Should be out of your system right around now, though, so you should be on your way...
  14. I never did the math on this before. 8/18-8/19 I lost an average of 6.1 pounds per month. I had surgery at 204 and I lost s.l.o.w. I think one month I only lost 2-3 pounds eating less than 900 calories a day. I did lose it though! I even lost a few more since then.

    Anyone for August 2020

I was sleeved on 8/19. The first week post op I was tired and dizzy as well. Once I was moved to full liquids which allowed me to have certain soups I felt so much better and my energy level improved. How much longer until you can advance?
  16. I lost 16 lbs my first month and then for the next six months or so, I lost 10-12 lbs a month (it slowed down after that). I started out at over 300 lbs. But like you said, everyone is different. I would say on average, most people lose 15-25 lbs the first month, and then 10-12 or so lbs a month after that (but it slows down the further out you go)
  17. Hang in there! It does get better! The morning I checked in for surgery, I was 223.2. When I left the next day I was about 9# heavier due to the air & fluids they pump you full of. Within a week, I lost that weight, and now I'm down an additional 15# on top of the 10# from surgery. I had surgery on 8/19, so I'm 3 weeks out. This past weekend I was stuck at 209.5 for about 4-5 days, but I think it was due to a whey protein allergy. I'm also having a minor complication, so I'm having a UGI x-ray tomorrow morning to see if I have a blockage or something else. As long as you're feeling ok, follow the instructions and things will get back on track! 🙂
  18. I weigh myself in the am. I have lost a total of 10 lbs (this includes the 2 week liquid diet) and I’m two weeks post-surgery. I’m very discouraged, but hoping things will pick up. I know some people are slow losers and I’m trying to be patient. I had one day that I had a 3 lb gain and was really upset. It will work out!

    Day 1 post opp

I came out of anesthesia at about 1:30PM the day of my surgery. That afternoon, night and following day were absolutely dismal. I think I maybe slept an hour that first night. The pain and discomfort were overwhelming. I had been fighting severe constipation the last 2 days before surgery, and I believe that exacerbated everything. I went home the afternoon following surgery, and the first several days everything was tentative and ginger. However, it steadily improved and by day 10 I felt completely back to normal, as if I'd never had surgery. No soreness or pain at all. So it does get better. Hang in there! EDIT: I just noticed that mine was a different procedure, sorry about that. General principle still applies though; gotta just forge ahead.

    I DID IT !

I DID IT ! I hit MY weight goal. NOT my surgeon's goal 10 years ago when I started this advent....that was to weigh145 pounds. Then he agreed that having started at 320, (and then 5'3" ) that a more logical goal would be in the area of 160 to 170. The lowest I ever got was 175. And I did not maintain that for even a moment. The the next 8 years of losing my only sibling to the Flu at the age of 49 (please get your flu shot) and then my surviving parent a few years later... personal illness and drama.... and creeping weight gain.... 14 months ago at 220 pounds and 63 years old I got my act back together. I went back to eating protein - first and foremost - protein, healthy vegetables and fruit, and a smattering of healthy whole grain carbs and healthy fats. I ate mindfully - and intentionally to fuel my mind and body. I ate a treat daily I slowly changed HOW I eat, what I eat, and when I eat it. I did not announce it, I did not talk about it. I just did it. I lost 45 pounds in the past 14 months. Not fast weight loss, but steady And I may decide to lose a bit more. Or not. Thank you for being my sounding board. Thank you for being here for support. Today I am thankful for my sleeve, for saggy baggy hanging skin and not caring. And for being healthy !

    Give it me straight!

This may sound funny, but my boobs are literally tipping me over. I was a 46H and now the right one weighs less than the left (getting a mammogram Monday) and my gait is off. I am a size 18-20 on the bottom and whatever (???) size on top. I had spinal surgery and need tests to make sure my hardware is still intact. Either way, I need a breast reduction, which my insurance may not cover and I need to make a hefty down payment. Uggghhhh!!! It also took me months to get through the stages and honestly I am still (since 12/2/2019) between stages 3 and 4.
  22. ...with smaller clothing and other victories. I am struggling this month and being hard on myself because my weight loss slowed. Yesterday I spilled a glass of water on the floor and cleaned the mess without assistance. I stopped for a moment and thought about how difficult (impossible) that was a few months ago. I am not always happy with the numbers on the scale, but I am happy with the changes in my body and non-scale victories. The crazy thing for me is as much as I wanted to change, I realize I never planned for succeeding. I now weigh less than I have in 25 years and barely recognize the difference. In my head, I am still almost 400 lbs, which is where I was before my December 2, 2019, gastric sleeve. I think I am more scared of succeeding than I am failing - which is weird because I have always dreamed of being smaller. The problem was that I never mentally planned for what that would look like. Now that this change has come out of my dreams and into my life, I am not sure what to do with it. Weight loss triggers a lot of painful things for me - some connected to a sense of security I felt being severely morbidly obese. I always felt this sense of invisibility, which is really weird because at 5'3 and 381 I was anything but invisible!!! Still, I need to take a step back and remember why I started this journey. I am in a self-sabotaging cycle that has made me stuck - plus or minus 8-10 lbs. I have been secluded with COVID and not reaching out for support, even with support readily available. Today I am starting my day differently going back to the basics with measuring food, drinking water, and eliminating the slider foods that trigger me to overeat. I have been bulimic for most of my life and now I am weirdly swinging the other way with not eating in regular intervals and when my body is physically hungry, I eat something. Mentally I know that I must eat to lose weight, but its a struggle with how my feelings around food trigger me to forget my diet and eat what I want. I grew accustomed to not being able to eat and hoped that would continue. Now, it depends on the day. I cannot eat a lot, but 'a lot' is relative, after the gastric sleeve. I am struggling to get back to focused efforts on mindful eating. Can anyone relate to what I am experiencing?

I just got set for a 10-21 Sleeve but don’t see an October thread.

    Steroids, obesity, and WLS

the reason I got a sleeve was so that I could continue steroids if and when I need them. I have had my sleeve for 10 years. I have fairly well controlled asthma, with the use of inhaled steroids 365 days a year and when I get sick,.. bronchitis or anything else that might hit my lungs hard, antibiotics and oral steroids usually with decadron injection to start it out. I end up on fairly high doses 60 mg for a week then descending doses for 2 to 3 weeks to insure breathing.... at least once or twice a year. I get ravenously hungry. I gain some weight. Then I lose it over the next couple months. It is a pain in the butt. But I do really well, as far as I am concerned. My sleeve has handled the steroid use. And I am still kicking at 64 years old.

    Weight gain post revision

I went in for my revision on 8/11 weighing 212 and at my week post op on 8/19 I weighed 215. I know it was from fluid because I got 6+ bags of IV fluids in the 4 days post op in the hospital.
