    2nd Fill and having pain

I've had the same symptoms. Tightness and pain going down, but I can't eat anything that I want. I don't want to get an unfill yet. I thought that I'd wait until my next appointment in two weeks. I'm hoping that as I loose weight that the band will loosen. We'll see, huh? I have been sticking with soft mushy type foods and I'm loosing weight, which is good! SS

Just got a call for my consult!!!!!

Hi Jacki, Congratulations! I wish you much success during your journey to shedding some weight. I know I read a couple of posts where there were a few 15 yr old that had the surgery done in Mexico. Maybe if you do a search, you'll find it. I do think that you are doing a wonderful job in helping your daughter with her weight loss.
  3. I am 19 days post-op - am doing pretty well - I don't think I have lost much weight but the swelling seems to be finally going down except around my port area - my question is sometimes after I eat I feel a sort of electrical prickly sensation like pins and needles but not painful in my arms and legs. Has anyone else experienced this? I live in Dallas and it is very hot right now so may be heat related but wanted to see if it is normal - I just left my doctor's MA a voicemail about it and my first fill/adjustment appt isn't until August 11th. I also woke this morning with a severe crick in my neck where I can't turn to the left but I think I am trying to blame everything on the band and it probably isn't related at all. Thanks!!
  4. I was banded late March. I feel my weight loss has been very slow, about 16 lbs. I eat all the right foods during the day but by 9:00 old habits kick in & I find myself in the kitchen even though I'm not hungry. I don't always eat but it's a habit that I have yet to break. I read every sheet the Dr gave me before & after surgery & read so much info on the net my head was spinning. I made the asmption once I had the surgery it would be so easy to lose weight & it would just fall off. Well, tonight I took a sledge hammer to that lying ( ) scale! So here's my issue. I've struggled with depession/anxiety all my life. It started to get severe a few yeas ago & it's taken control of my life once again. I take 2 different anti depressants & 1 pill for anxiety. i thought having the surgery would help because who could be unhappy if their skinny & pretty. i was soooo wrong. The mental aspect of the surgery never occured to me. I've tried therapy a few years ago when I started cutting but the only thing I got out of it was more medication. Is anyone else having the same issue? Im looking for real solutions from people that truly know what I am going through. I'm afraid I'm not losing much weight & how in the world do I make this band work for me? I started at 196 and currently am about 180. Does anyone think maybe I'm not losing very quickly because I only need to lose about 60 pounds? I had the surgery to get excess weight off due to a back injury. I had a spinal fusion in 2015 (screws & rods in my spine). Thanks in advance! Sent from my ASUS MeMO Pad 7 using the BariatricPal App

    Ibuprofen?

I am allowed to take ibuprofen if I need it. That's why I chose the sleeve verses any other surgery. I have migraines that I control with ibuprofen too the tune of 1200mg at a time but it's a one shot deal. I however have not needed to take that high of a dose since I've started losing weight. I take Tylenol first... no change in pain? Move on to 200mg of ibu if that doesn't work within 30 minutes I take 1 more ibu and I haven't had that fail to work yet.
  6. Well first off congrats and welcome home. I know that sleeping in my own bed and on my tummy made a world of difference in my mental state. I hear a lot of people gain weight with the surgery fluids and it is great that you have gotten rid of those and now everything you lose will be taking you further south on the scale. You sound like your chugging along, just keep up the work and keep us posted.
  7. i was banded in JUne i not gotten a fill yet because i am losing weight ,with no fill theres no restriction and i cant get a pouch yet because of no restriction iam correct

    Need A Fill And Encoragement!

My nutritionist had me calculate my BMR... Basic metabolic rate. It was 1600 if I was sedentary, meaning if I eat 1600calories a day with no work out, I would maintain my weight. As we want to lose weight we have to create a deficit... Lower our calories and/or add working out... That is how we lose! I am actually doing a 1200cal/day diet and rarely exceed that. If you google the BMR and equate it online, you will have a better idea of your ranges. Hope that gives you some insight!! 5/28/12 pre-op diet started (217lbs) 6/14/12 Surgery 1.8cc added to 10cc band (205lbs). 7/17/12 1st fill (194lbs). 7/24/12 (191lbs) 7/30/12 (187lbs) 8/14/12 1cc added total of 3.8cc (187)

    Need A Fill And Encoragement!

I hate to rain on your parade, but a total weight loss of 50 lbs by Christmas sounds like a big stretch to me. Average weight loss with the band is 1-2 lbs/week, so 40 lbs might be do-able. And at any rate, you're doing great so far and I don't want you to conclude that you're a failure if you don't hit the 50 lb goal by Christmas. How many calories a day does your surgeon/nutritionist want you to eat? I wouldn't be panicking over eating 1000 calories a day, especially if those calories consist of healthy foods (lean Protein, complex carbs, etc.).

    Calorie and carb intake

I too never could get an answer about how many calories I should be taking in. I am 4 weeks post op. It's easy for me to take in calories, I could easily eat over 1000 a day. I found that sticking to 700/800 calories a day right now works best for my weight loss. I aim for about 30 carbs a day.
  11. This is my first post. I had my surgery on 21st and have already lost 20 lbs is that normal I mean 20lbs in six days seems like alot.
  12. My name is Maren and I live in Alabama. I'm 34, with a high weight of 293 and a BMI of 47 (starting). I have BCBS and am in my third month of the 6 month supervised weight loss. My doc has me doing a controlled carb diet, mostly to get me in the mindset of putting protein first and carbs last for my post-surgery lifestyle and I'm down to 278 after only a few weeks of *really* trying. Believe me, I've done the calculations and know that to be safe in terms of insurance coverage, I shouldn't get below 260. I think I'll have to add back in a few carbs over the next few months and then once I'm approved, get back on track. That's sad, considering I've been morbidly obese for about a decade, but I'll play the games just like everyone else. For a long time I've thought casually about surgery, but I haven't gotten serious until recently. I actually don't have any major health concerns yet but I've had three miscarriages (no successful pregnancies) and even though there is no clear reason why weight would have anything to do with it, my OB specialist recommended I put off any more attempts until I lose weight. My doctor (primary) and my OB-GYN think I should do the full bypass because of my weight, but I have thought a lot about it and think I prefer the band. I'll hold off final decision until I talk with my surgeon, but in the meantime I'll be preparing for the LapBand procedure. I look forward to learning from you all and journeying with you. -Maren

    Snacks?

I am starting month 5 and have been stable at 190 lbs for a month, only 10 pounds from goal but quite frankly comfortable at 190. I can eat full meals and have some desert (ice cream etc) and I snack on small candy bars, MMs, etc and I neither gain nor lose weight. Nothing wrong with having a cookie, with or without sugar or ice cream, etc. It is normal. I am also with Kaiser and they want only 3 meals a day, maybe a Protein bar or shake in between but they do want only 3 normal meals per day. I didn't have the surgery just to give up eating everything else I would have done the bypass. Enjoy a snack just don't overdo.

    My broken system

Be sure to get your 70-80 Grams of Protein a Day, and stay as close to 800-1000 Calories a Day! I found that helped me to loose the weight!

    Liquid Diet-Help

I'm willing to bet most on this web site have had similar experiences to yours, I know I have. Going through this weight loss journey seems to be a series of realizations including ones relationship with food. Boredom, anxiety, are familiar reasons to self soothe with food. My own realization was that I often medicated uncomfortable emotions with food and yes, alcohol. I had to find other ways to occupy myself and acknowledge my dependence on food and alcohol. My ha is and dependence were unhealthy for me and causing detrimental effects on my health. It's a good thing when you find healthier replacements. I had to focus on how was I going to prepare for life after surgery and improve how I coped with my emotions by talking about them or dealing with them. This is a great forum for that!

    Goal?

It was suggested to me that setting multiple goals along the way would be a good idea, and it's best to be somewhat realistic. If you're 50, it's probably not realistic to think you're going to get back to your weight as a high school junior if you were particularly slim, for example - your body has changed with age. High end of healthy BMI was a suggestion of a reasonable goal. Then once you get there, consider whether you want to continue or maintain and adjust your diet and exercise accordingly. Your surgeon may also have a goal for you. If it's less aggressive than the one you've set for yourself, then by all means think of the surgeon's goal as a major milestone, but not as the end of the journey. And don't forget - this is not a race. Slow and steady can reach a goal, too!

    getting back on track

I'm sorry to hear about all that you have been going through. I know for me emotional eating is my worst! When I am stressing big time I tend to lose weight, when I went through my divorce pre-band I lost 45 pounds. (but I also broke my foot and had to hop around for 2 months on crutches! That's a work out let me tell you!) My best suggestion to you is to give yourself some TLC. Go back to band basics like when you first were banded. Try the 5 day pouch test/reset to start. You can find it in posts on the site and online as well. Find a doctor that you like as your PCP let them know your banded, then find a bariatric doctor and make an appointment. Don't let your insurance company tell you no! It's all in the way visits are billed and if your having an issue, then it should be covered. Best of luck to you, sounds like things are going in a better direction for you already!

    Protein in Maintenance

I still aim for 100 grams per day, per my surgeon's recommendations. I'm very active though so that's why he insists I have a higher protein intake. I think for my height/weight, it would normally be somewhere around 48-60 grams per day if my activity level was more that of the average person. However, I run(distance running) and do weight training and, if I don't run, I do some sort of cross training. I would talk to your surgeon and see what his recommendations for you are because protein needs can vary a lot between individuals.

    Help please

I lost 12 pounds immediately after surgery and then nothing for 3 weeks... just my body adjusting to being banded. Remember, we average just 1-2 pounds a week with the band. Look at the big picture. Your body is healing and it's not really about weight loss right now. Just keep following your doctor's orders and stick to your diet. Until you get restriction almost any weight loss will be due to your dieting efforts following your post-op diet. I've had 2 fills and I'm still pretty much doing it myself with diet and exercise. Hang in there and don't get discouraged... it will start happening for you!
  20. This is just me....but if I ate that many carbs I would not loose weight either. Before you go and let them do that other surgery.....try eliminating the carbs and see what happens. Are you getting 80 grams of Protein in a day? I am just asking because I know if I fill up on the carbs (rice, bread, pasta) there is no way I get the protein in. The protein is what keeps you feeling full longer (or for me anyway). A day's menu for me goes something like this: Breakfast 2 poached eggs Snack String cheese lunch Baked chicken breast and green Beans Snack Nutts (pecans walnuts peanuts and NOT the honey coated kind dinner Baked fish and some kind of veggie (i avoid corn and carrots) like field peas, green peas Late night - if I have not gotten enough protein in I add a Protein Bar or unjury chicken broth (20 grams protein) So far the weight is coming off 3-4 lbs a week for me. Just thought you might want some diet to compare to. Good luck in whatever you decide.

    UGH ...

In response to the 6 flags dilemma, this makes me sad. Your husband obviously loves you - he committed to spend the rest of his life with you!!! If this is a friend of his, he will likely love you too - for making his friend happy. The fact that you might be slimmer 2-3 months from now is not the answer. You are still YOU!!! That is enough, even if you never lose the weight. Please do not stop living because the weight shames you. Weight is not the answer (not denying that that it adds dramatically to our sense of self worth, but...) you are! Go have fun with the man who loves you and his friend. Keep trying on the pre-op diet. If it's any consolation I am 3 weeks out and just gained 2 lbs!! Sucky, but not uncommon. Were you close to getting your period when you had to weigh in? that often adds a lot of weight (probably my gain). Also your profile pic- adorable!! Get out there with your bad self and live a little.

    Ketosis????

I remember that weird taste in my mouth. Nothing tasted good for weeks which helped with the initial weight loss. If you can have any protein that is not sweet that may help. But otherwise, just hold out. It will eventually go away. I was light-headed for about 4 days and then survivied the liquids without much of a problem which was a huge surprise. I was more worried about the 2 weeks on liquid than the surgery. Funny what we get fixaited on.
  23. This is exaclty where I sit now. I've lost half of my excess weight with the band. Now it's up to me to get the rest off. But a little excercise and diet adjustment and I'm back on the weightloss wagon. The best news is- odds are pretty good that you will NEVER gain back the lost weight. How many people who diet and diet and diet can say that. Megan

Need some help with stats, please?

Hi everyone.... I've been trying since I signed up to change my stats that show here in my profile... the highest weight, current weight, etc... and I just can't tell where to change that info. On 'edit my profile' I only can edit certain things, but not those. Can someone help? The stats are wrong, including my HW (which shows an incorrect weight)... just frustrated. Any help with this would be awesome. Thanks so much in advance.
  25. Thanks for the info! I realize that there is often a desire to tighten everything up - especially after kids and all, nevermind with weight loss. What I am trying to figure out is if I will legitimately NEED the plastic surgery. I have to lose 178 lbs. and I have seen people with that type of weight loss where the skin just hangs off them in huge folds. Which of course leads to rashes, sores, etc beyond just the issue of wanting to get rid of all the excess skin. So I am just trying to see if anyone else has lost that type of weight and not had such a severe problem. That's why I tried to specify between the actual NEED and just wanting to tighten it all up. Should I edit the poll? I tried to make it simple but still get the info I was looking for - I had hoped that between the poll and the first post, it would be clear what I was looking for, but now I'm not sure! Anyway, thanks for the helpful information it is always great to hear from people further down the road on this and so successful - it is so inspiring and gives me confidence that I can really do this and make it work for me. So thanks again!!
