    Lab Band Removal Experience?

Had mine done outpatient. Insurance covered it as part of WLS revision. Pain was minimal but my stomach felt heavy when walking for about 3 weeks.
  4. It has been a long time since I last posted. It is now 2017 & Im still suffering from reflux. Just had an EGD which shows esophagitis & reflux issues. I recently retired & now am only covered by Champ va insurance. My doctor is recommending surgery again & her office just called & said my insurance approved it. I am scheduled 7/11. I am still worried that once I have this done Champ va will try not to pay it since I didn't go through the weight loss protocol back in 2012 when I went to Mexico. I need the revision for reflux, not weight loss. I am so tired of everything I eat coming back up, also I'm not able to digest salad, veggies or fruit. Also lactose intolerant since my sleeve. I really hope this works.. I have kept my weight off, I'm 125lbs..
  5. I've had two surgeries--a sleeve, and then a revision to RNY because I developed GERD after my sleeve. Nine years ago, I lost 100 lbs with the sleeve from a starting BMI of 36 and kept it off, so that was a big big plus. I don't recall much pain after the first two days or so, and my recovery was uneventful. The cons were that my sleeve was very picky about the foods it would tolerate. I could not eat scrambled or hard-boiled eggs. I could not eat dense protein like tuna, salmon, or chicken breast. I could not eat pasta, bread, or bready things because they balled up inside my stomach, absorbed stomach fluid, and then hurt. I lived on seafood, steak, dairy products, and vegetables. I did not dump. I developed GERD a couple of years after my surgery but I loved my sleeve so much I did not want to consider a bypass, but after a year on 3x the regular prescribed dosage of PPIs plus OTC antacids that still did not control my reflux and regurgitating everything I swallowed multiple times I decided on RNY. I had my RNY on June 29 of this year, and maybe because I'm ten years older than when I had my sleeve my recovery was a little bit harder and more painful. I definitely felt like my insides had been rearranged. RNY is way different from the sleeve to me. I don't have that tight feeling anymore that I have eaten enough so I have to measure my food, but I am used to eating a small amount so it's not a big deal. I can eat eggs and pasta again. I don't dump, but I became lactose-intolerant. I lost 10 additional pounds following the RNY surgery when I was on a liquid/puree diet, but I haven't lost anymore and my BMI has leveled off at 20.
  6. How soon did you have these issues after your surgery? I started having these issues about 2 weeks after my sleeve surgery which was 2 years ago. I did get a phone call from the surgery cordinater last week. He said my case was discussed at a meeting with my doctor & she was going to contact the insurance company to discuss my case! So I am hoping that I will be able to have it done. How are you feeling after your revision? Please keep me updated on your progress!
  7. I'm having revision from lap band to VGS at Mi Doctor hospital in Tijuana on November 19th. My surgeon is Dr. Valenzeula. Anyone else planning surgery around that time? Looking for a surgery buddy.

    Family and friend rejection

This is why I told no one prior to my sleeve surgery. Best thing i couldve done. After the surgery, I did tell some close friends when i went on a girls trip and boy did the judgements flow!! Now that I'm considering sleeve to bypass revision, i told my mom i was "considering" it and she called me a few days later and told me i was gonna die on the table, yada, yada, etc. Told my boyfriend i was "considering" the revision surgery, he flipped and went on a "join the gym" rant. So back to dont ask, dont tell for me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App

There are a lot of revision lap-banders here and we all are so sorry to hear about the damage you sustained. I am also furious when I see lap-band ads or "medical" shows discussing lap-band. The real problems are never discussed with any sincerity - especially the reversable claim. I would also recommend that you get a second opinion on your damage and possibility for a sleeve - it seems that if they can do an RnY, they can do a sleeve? Take the time to heal and take care of yourself. You will get better!!! Lara

Ask for an EGD to stretch the scarred tissue a bit for an opening--they did this for a friend of mine for GERD. Then, after healing, maybe your revision with VSG would work. good luck! Thank you all for the well-wishes; this board is such a blessing! I'm so sore today; they spent an hour inside me cutting out adhesions and scar tissue so I guess I should expect to be sore. Tiffykins and I share the same surgeon, Dr Michel; I trust his decision, he said that I may still have quite a bit of restriction due to the very narrow scarring (picture an hour glass). It is that narrow scarring that didn't leave enough tissue to create a sleeve; I'm praying that it will eventually stretch just enough to get a sleeve in there. It was the perfect set-up for an RNY with the pouch on top all they would have to do is cut off the narrow scarring, hook up the intestines then Voila! another nutritional deficiency case walking out the door. It sounds like Swizzly lives in a place of good values and common sense; I wish all bariatric surgeons would ban the band! And I can say my quality of life is much improved without the horrible GERD!! I will still be scanning this board looking for people who are trying to decide whether to get the band or sleeve, you can bet I'll be chiming-in with my opinion. Whether you all know it or not, you are my friends that I turn to for a pick-me-up; I know I can always count on being inspired by someone or something said on here so Thank You! I hope to be telling an inspirational story of my own someday (soon I hope).

Thanks, new_beginnings! I've been dragging my heels with more than a little apprehension about putting my faith in another WLS. I found a new, more experienced surgeon and have been filling out paperwork before having to even go into the office. Once I get off my butt and send in this novel(!), they will send into the insurance company for approval. It's nice to see others like you, Susan, Irene, Tiffy, et al having a such better experience with the VSG!! That's exactly what the nurse at my new surgeon's office said. She said that there are different surgeries because they don't all work for all. Even if I weren't going to revise, it'll be SO nice to get the crap band <stolen> out!

    GERD vs Sleeve

I started with the lap band in 2008 which is how the GERD started. I revised to the Sleeve in 2010 thinking it would help, not knowing back then it would get worse. It has progressively gotten so bad over the years my reflux is out of control. I take tons of medications and now including cough pills, syrups, drops, I regurgitate in my sleep... etc. My insurance has just recently approved me for another revision to the Rny Gastric Bypass (thank GOD). I do try to put the word out not to take that chance, who wants to be revised so many times? It's either revision for me or future Barrett's or esophageal cancer. Guess which one I chose?

    VSG PostOp Bad Experience

I am so sorry your surgery had complications. I had a sleeve to bypass revision for GERD on 6/29. I was unable to stand up to begin walking without becoming tachycardic and dizzy on 7/1. My hemoglobin was 7.1 and I got 2 units of packed red cells. I felt much better afterward. My drain was left in for 10 days as I continued to produce a lot of blood from the chest. My surgeon suspects I bled from several areas as I had more than one procedure done. I feel much better now. I hope you feel better soon, you have been through a lot.
  14. I just got the approval for my revision and I'm set for August 1st. I have a thread posted here where I'm going to document my whole story and experience. I have bad reflux, a stricture that won't heal and keeps getting more swollen and inflamed, and my esophagus is eroding at the site of the stricture. They told me if I don't revise soon I'm looking at Barret's which will eventually lead to esophageal cancer. My insurance company okay'd the surgery right away because my doctor is extremely worried about the future health of my esophagus. Oh, and the fact that I haven't been able to eat sold food since my sleeve in 2012. I'm kind of a rare case I guess but I'm Iron, Vitamin D and Protein deficient and I can't stay hydrated enough to keep from having bad kidney infections. Hopefully the surgery will go well for me and finally allow the stricture to heal, I can't wait to eat real food again! Keep us updated, I'm hoping your insurance company will approve your surgery and I definitely know how reflux feels. Good luck!!

    My sleeve Day 1

Congrats on all of your progress post-sleeve! I had my revision first thing yesterday morning. Procedure only took an hour because there was no scarring around the band. I was home by 11am. I took a 2 hr nap when I got home. I managed about 20 oz of Water and 3/4 can of reduced sodium with one scoop of unjury chicken Protein. Had a little discomfort from the gas bloat. Today has been awesome! No gas pain. Minimal pain around the largest incision placed where my port used to be. I have 5 incisions. I've met my Fluid and protein goals. Lots of walking. Hubby and I can't believe how great I feel. Cheers! Deb

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.

Hello everyone. I was wondering the same thing. I had my sleeve in 2016. I had issues with GERD from the beginning since I had heartburn from time to time before my surgery. I was 207 on day of and 147 at my lowest 11 months later, and I was skeletal! I did love being so lean yet I still had horrible acid. My surgeon had suggested I had the gastric bypass but I worried that as I aged I would waste away in my senior years. Then COVID hit. No gym, just hunkering down at home. I have gained 25 lbs during quarantine. I also had a baby in September. I’m 5’1 and hate the weight on me. And the GERD keeps me from sleeping. Would I be able to get a revision that Medicaid will cover? Also, my sleep apnea is back.
  17. Wow 15 years! I'm having a revision from sleeve to MGB on 4/23. How have you done ? Any regrets ?
  18. I was banded in 2006 but never maintained a weight loss. My band was defective with a hole in it. Unfortunately, I changed jobs and the new insurance would not cover the revision to a new band. So I've had this band in with a little restriction, but no fill. I've lost maybe 10 that stayed off and lost the same 40 pounds over and over via WW, exercise etc. I'm getting the sleeve on Friday, so I can't speak about success yet. I'm hoping this will do it, but I'm just happy to get this band out of my body
  19. First off my heart goes out to you with such an extensive medical history, and chronic extreme pain. I can't imagine how agonizing it must be on a daily basis. There are so many contributing factors to your symptoms that's it's hard to say if a revision to a RNY would bring about the results you're hoping for. It's going to be a blind risk either way, with no guarantee of improvement. But I will say this. There are some who chose the sleeve and then started suffering severe GERD/reflux issues afterwards, who then revised to the RNY and experienced a marked improvement. I had never even known it was a possibility myself until reading the posts here. It's part of the reason why I switched my decision from sleeve to RNY myself. Which I'll be getting in a short while. Let me stress that GERD doesn't happen to everyone, but when it's *you*, I know you'd do anything to get away from its devastating effects. It is not a pleasant way to live. I hope whatever you decide in the end that it brings you the answer you are seeking. Good luck!
  20. This right here! Nearly identical to my story. My lap band was removed in Feb 2017 after I had it 8 years. My revision to sleeve is on Nov. 1, 2017. My BMI got down to 27 the first 2 years with the lap band but due to many issues including one surgery to repair it 5 years ago my weight crept up about a 10-14 pounds a year. My BMI is now about 37ish. A lot of people would look at me and think I should not need something as drastic as WLS but I don't want to go back to what I was. I have tried everything and just can't do it on my own. Good luck on your journey!

    Gastric sleeve and heartburn

I am a band to vsg revision 2 years ago. The acid remains to the point I take 40mg nexium daily and still have break through. Dr has told me recently that I may have to revise to rny to fix the problem. He also told me that he no longer revises band to sleeve only band to bypass because of the acid issue. Good luck. Gastric sleeve and heartburn

Hearburn/reflux is a very well-documented side effect of sleeve surgery, whether you are having a revision from lap band or this is a first bariatric procedure. If you have a hiatal hernia, see if your surgeon can repair it during your sleeve surgery. This is a very common cause of GERD and having it repaired can make a huge difference. I had occasional GERD prior to my sleeve surgery, my surgeon fixed it during my sleeve surgery and no GERD since. Many sleevers take a PPI such as omeprazole or Protonix for several months after surgery -- talk to your surgeon about this. If you already have GERD and it is not caused by a hernia or some other repairable deformity, then gastric bypass may be something you want to consider. Sleeve surgeries can cause or worsen GERD but bypass cures it something like 98% of the time.

    Gastric sleeve and heartburn

Would like to revise from band to sleeve but am concerned about this reflux issue. Even before having the band I had issues with acid reflux. I have it well under control now by taking omeprazol daily, but am concerned that with the sleeve the omeprazol won't be effective. Has anyone been ableto control their reflux succesfully by taking a ppi after VSG? Thnaks!
  24. When I started this process, I weighed 235. I set a goal of 150 for myself. When I was in college, I took a full load of classes, worked full-time and worked out 2-3 hours EVERY DAY at the gym. With that schedule, I weighed 150 and was a size 10. I thought that if I got THERE, then I would be at my 'best.' Well, I got to 150 and knew I wasn't done. So, I revised my goal to 143, because that put me at a healthy BMI. 143 came and I have still been losing, and I knew I'd eventually get to the 100 pounds lost mark. I MADE IT!!!! WOO HOO!!!
  25. Hi I apologize in advance if this topic has been discussed. I have my consultation at UIC in chicago tomorrow. Has anyone had a revision from a band to a sleeve with Dr. Masrur at UIC? If so what was your experience?
