  1. I am 18 lbs from onederland. My weight loss seems to have slowed as I have only lost 3.2 lbs in 3 1/2 weeks. I am 5 months post-op. Any suggestions on what I can do? I am doing Zumba twice a week for 45 min. & Fit Club once a week for 45 min & then I use my exercise bike at home for 30 min twice a week. I am still eating 70 g or more of protein & less than 40 g of carbs & 64 oz or more of water per day. Any tips or hints would be appreciated!

    Not losing weight

This is normal. There's been tons of posts from people just a few weeks out panicking about the stall... but it is perfectly normal and will happen quite a bit more over the next year or two. http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/351046-embrace-the-stall/ I've just posted this same advice in another thread recently: I know it can seem like you shouldn't have to deal with stalls since you went through surgery, but try to think of them as rest breaks for your body to catch up. You couldn't run flat out for 100 miles without a break - you'd need to stop every so often and catch your breath, have a few swigs of Water and get revved back up to hit that trail and run fast again. That's exactly what your body is doing - taking a breather in preparation to performing another sprint (drop a few pounds). Sometimes it might need a short rest, sometimes it might need longer (weeks). But if you keep giving it what it needs (water/protein/exercise) you'll start sprinting again. And get out a tape measure and take measurements NOW. Arms, chest, waist, hips and thighs. You'll see during those stalls that you might just be dropping fat (it gets burned off and replaced with muscle). Since a pound of fat and a pound of muscle weigh the same, it might not show up on the scale, but fat is MUCH bulkier than muscle, so you'll see it in the tape measure and how your clothes fit. Stalls are vital. Stalls are GOOD. It means you're hitting a new peak and getting ready for some weight loss coming up.
  3. I had my surgery 4/26/12. I'm a case manager at a non for profit so obviously a desk job. I was supposed to go back today but with two kids being home all weekend I didn't get much of a recovery time. I'm taking today as a rest/prep day and going in tomorrow. I plan to rest a bit, get my nails done, hair done, an at home facial, and get my clothes out for the rest of the week. I made my hubby call off too (hehehe) so he could help me. I haven't been pampered much as he was busy tending to the little ones but they'll be in daycare today.

    Need Motivation.

Hello everyone! I really need encouragement in my weight loss journey. I was banded end of 2008. I have been on a roller coaster with my weight loss. I have only kept off 30 lbs. I really need to lose another 90 lbs. I really can't eat meat too well. What protein supplement is good with no after taste. I had signed up like 2 years ago, but I haven't been posting or doing anything with it. I have not

    losing weight

I don't think it is a requirement to lose weight before surgery however there is most often and pre op diet you have to follow. This diet usually entails eating healthy for about 14 days before surgery. Usually for most the last 5 days is liquid and the last 3 is clear liquids including talking a laxitive. With all this it is very possible to lose weight which is what does need to happen around the liver. The loss of fat around the liver is what the pre op diet is intended for so that it is easier to get around to the stomach. Good Luck I hope this helps in your understanding.
  9. Didn't mean to go so long without a reply. That's not like me, just have been under the weather as of late (summer colds are a pain). Anywho, thank you so very much for the reply. I appreciated the keep the chin up and not a comparing weight loss to others ... thanks again. You're doing great.
  10. Gosh, your post touched me. Tracy, I dealt with all of it. I was where you were. BIG TIME. The story is too long to recount but trust me, I have been there. I was "The Worlds Most Remedial Bandster" - I mean really. I knew folks who had the RnY Bypass around the same time, and of course, they seem to lose so quickly. Then I actually had people around me (5 were my CLOSE friends) who gave me so much flack. They meant well but they were like "Errrr.... it's not working, is it?" And those were the nice comments. My body wasn't doing all that it should have do with the band, and no matter what I did I couldn't lose my flabby lower abdomen area. I was so desolate - I also thought of the RnY Bypass. Luckily, I stuck with the band and I'm glad I did. It all worked out and three+ years later I can say I had the last laugh. I got to goal (slowly but in time, I started losing & losing) and a bit past it. I found out I didn't have a flabby lower abdomen - it was fibroids. My Plastic Surgeon found them. Oy vey! That meant a fibroid removal surgery that was the equivalent of a C-section. OUCH Recovery was so slow & long but I now have a smoother mid-section. Of those 5 toughest critics, 4 (yes, 4 of them) are now LapBanded too. I lost as much as some friends who had RnY. It took me longer, but the slower weight loss helped now look (to strangers) as if I've never been heavy. As they say, living well is the best revenge. (There are pics on the Before and After thread that document my progress.) Don't give up yet. You've got a great tool, don't beat yourself up. It can happen.

    New to the group

Welcome! I just joined the site in the fall. There are lots of great resources and supportive people on the site. Best wishes on your weight loss journey!
  12. I was wondering what complications, if any, you had after surgery? I started having bad pain and nausea in my lower left abdomen, and they found it was diverticulitis. They think it is due to all of the protein shakes and after surgery diet/ pain meds causing constipation. I finally went back to work after being out for 2 weeks, and I started vomiting white foam, and I am back to feeling super nauseous and dizzy. Anyone else having these problems? Unfortunately with feeling so sick, I am not getting many calories and my dr said my body is in starvation mode, which is stalling the weight loss. I have to force myself to get up to 800 calories a day. Not fun...
  13. My mom pushed out three of us and had rny in her lAter 40's. She lost over 150lbs and did have loose skin as the weight loss was fast but it all tightened up! She was lifting weights and using the elliptical and that helped a lot with the skin. She ended up looking too much weight and had to put on a couple pounds
  14. Congrats !!!!! Yes.....most of us have delays in our weight loss at different intervals. 3-4 weeks is a fairly common time for the first one to hit. Stay strict with your plan and keep exercising and the delays will pass and weight loss will continue. I find that hopping on the scale every morning helps to keep me focused on avoiding the pitfalls that can derail weight loss.

    January 7th Check-in

Hi Kristina!! You are right, Onederland is just around the corner for you! That's awesome! I'm down 4 pounds this week weighing in at 197!!!! I'm so excited. That makes my total loss 75 pounds. Hope everyone else had a fabulous week
  16. Today I'm wondering if anyone out there has PCOS and got lap band. I personally was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 years ago and was told that losing weight would be the only thing to get my hormones in check and eventually be able to concieve. I was banded 1/16/09 and have already seen some differences in my body. So, anyone out there? Do you have PCOS and have your symptoms gone away with weight loss? :frown: Thanks!

    Wet eyes 2day

I know how you feel. The worry that "what if THIS doen't work" rears its ugly head from time to time. When it does, I log in and read other's posts. I have never had a feeling or worry that hasn't been touched on here. Reading words of encouragement, knowing that others have gone through and are going through the same feelings/concerns helps. I went years believeing I must be the only one who feels this way because I was always the biggest person I knew. But you know what, here we are connected by this specific issue. I took so much information from those that came before me. I read about what they did when they stalled, took advice on the best way to succeed and took comfort in thier kind words of support. I love my doctor and NUT and am still convinced I made the best choice for me. But, reading other's experiences here hits home for me. I know you all know what I feel. And we can relate to your struggles too. You are not alone through this and there are tons of people (me included) who are more than happy to buck you up, share what worked for us or just listen when you're concerned this won't work. Slow loss will happen to some, stalls will happen to some, don't give up, don't go off your plan. Do the very best you can, it is all any of us can do. You are still not very far out from surgery. still healing and your body is adjusting. I really have found that eating the small meals several times a day make it easier to get in the Protein, not feel hunger and stay energized. Tracking will not only give you a good big picture but it will help your doctor know what is working for you and what is not. You got this! Take control where you can, plan your meals - - search for recipies that you will enjoy. I enjoy food, so it helps me greatly to know that I'm not on another "diet" where I can't enjoy anything. Dont' be afraid to add in food items or liquids (staying on your doctors plan, of course) just do it slowly and you'll expand your choices. I hope today is a better day for you, you are doing great so far and this is just the beginning.

Mary, Please don't let your lack of weight loss keep you from going to the doctor. Really we all got the band because we need medical help with getting the weight off. He won't judge you and if you need a fill you're not going to get it any other way. Hugs. J

Hi kids, I've started at a new gym and they are kicking my behind. I thought I was fit because I've been working out pretty consistently from the get go. And I am cardiovascularly on top of things, but HOLY COW my body is sore today! I'm glad to be moving differently and I hope it jumps the weight loss too. TGIF! Juli

    Insurance appeals???

Thanks Rene. I am thinking about doing a precertification to see what they say. I have to get my husband behind me on this though. He has rolled his eyes at me whenever I have mentioned any weight loss surgery before. He thinks I can do it on my own even though I havent been able to do it! If I can get some help paying for it...I am definitely doing it! Nanahanna

    Hair loss

Ya'll need to go to your PCP and have bld work drawn. Some hair loss is normal with weight loss/surgery/trauma, it's called Telogen Effluvium (google it and do some reading). However, there CAN be other things going on. Hair loss can also be due to thyroid issues, other (non thyroid) hormonal imbalances, lack of Iron, lack of selenium, etc. I started having hair loss BEFORE my banding. I finally went to my PCP, all my bld work was normal. Got sent to a dermatologist. He has put me on Rogaine. It won't make me regrow lost hair, but will hopefully prevent more loss. I think maybe it's helping a little. I'm about to go back to the Dermatologist and ask about some prescription meds. Btw, Dermatologist said he doesn't think my hair loss is telogen effluvium, but rather post-menopausal alopecia. Good luck to all!

    Hair loss

I've only been banded since April 22, 2010 and have read some of the posts about hair loss but haven't experienced myself. What does your doctor say about it? Does it happen to everyone? It makes me really nervous to hear about because my hair has been my most redeeming feature for years!

surgery wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I was out of work for a week and a couple days but it wasn't pain as much as general discomfort. The gas used during surgery leaves you the most uncomfortable afterwards. My scars are very small. I have 5 all together and they are as small as your pinky nail is wide (considering you are a female) my biggest one is about an inch long and it's where they put the port. As far as keeping it private. To this day, 6months later, the only 2 people that know I have had surgery are my mother and fiance. I got admitted in the hospital under a fake name and everything because I didn't want people to know. You aren't lying when you tell people that you are *eating less, watching what you eat and only eating when your hungry* those things are all very very true and they don't need to know all about your lapband until you are ready to tell them or want to tell them. I will go to m y grave with me secret! Right now, I have lost 60 lbs and I don't have alot of excess skin. I've started toning up areas where I can see small problems and that is working well. I've always had a bigger tummy and that has proven to be stubborn in my loss, but it is shrinking litle bits at a time. I was scared too, but honestly, I do it a million times over if need be. My pay off has been so good! Best wishes and let me know if you have more questions! =)
