  1. Yes, And the dietician working with the bmi. They tod me it was probably because I wasn't getting enough copper which I've increased my intake of. I just meant that it's been my biggest struggle, the falling I mean. The protein they told me would probably get better over time. Interesting. I take a lot of copper because I need a lot of zinc (which I poop out). So the copper balances the zinc. I hope they're keeping a close watch on your copper via your blood work. Perhaps you'd consider using a cane until things go back to normal. You don't want to be falling. As for the protein, they're probably right. I drank 1 shake per day for the first 2 years as I couldn't eat enough. Have your tried other things than meat to supplement your protein: chicken, yogurt, fish, cheese, nuts, etc.?

    2 week liquid diet

I do the protein powder with skim milk but the texture gets me sometimes.....also the Atkins ready made high protein drinks are good, Greek yogurt, sugar free Jello, Campbell's healthy request soups strained. The slimfast drinks are good too but a bit more expensive than the Atkins at least where I live.

Snacking - hard time staying full :/

I can relate to OP's dilemma! I can't eat more than a few bites of meat protein then feel stuffed. But an hour later I'm hungry again. And keeping it real I will fill up on the snack food because it feels good to eat something and not feel stuffed after a few bites. I'm 6 months out. I have been trying to deal with this recently so that I don't end up in trouble eating carbs and junk food all day. What has been helping me is having a Premier Protein shake in the morning after my coffee -- 30 g of protein in me and I feel full for a long time - I need to sip it over an hour or so because it will give me a stomach ache if I just drink it down. According to my NUT, I should not be having shakes this late in the game, but I'm doing what works. Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt (80 calls/12 g protein) is also a good snack and has good flavor choices. And I love the Cabot 50% cheddar cheese in the individual servings (50 calories, 5 or 6 g protein I think). Just offering what works for me because I think at this stage in the process we all need variety -- I know the above things work for me but I get sick of having them all the time and that's why I've been reaching for the Doritoes/cookies/other horrible choices. Good Luck!

    Fish??

My doctor is pretty strict about eating and it is on the list to have fish. Just flake it up to the consistency of tuna fish. I am only 4 weeks out and I had it a few times. Remember to make it wet. I take yogurt and mix spices in it with a little water. I put it in a squirt bottle and leave it in the fridge overnight. You can put it on the fish for wetness and it gives it a nice taste along with the extra protein.

    Food panic attack

i don't even have a DR picked out yet and i am freaking out about eating before/after surgery...i eat a cup of yogurt and think, "after surgery i will only be able to eat half of this" or i take a glorious swig of my coke and think "after surgery i can't even have this anymore"...i know i have got to STOP this thinking...my obsession with food is part of what got me to this point...so when i start to think of all that i am going to miss i remind myself of all that i am going to welcome into my life...and that helps me get out of my own head

    Can't stop binge-ing

Aww.. you already did hit yourself, with 2500 calories that made you feel horrible. I know when Im around that time of the month I get ravenous. Try taking emergency food to work with you. Things you can snack on to your hearts content without guilt. Low fat microwave popcorn, carrots, yogurt, a low carb bar that tastes like chocolate and Peanut Butter. Things like that. We were just discussing binges on another thread and all agreed that when this happens with the band, a binge is a few of this and a bit of that. Not 2500 calories at a time. The band will help, and you'll be fine. Also, try eating some brown rice. It's great for you and the carbs are like a fine sedative without side affects - unless you eat too many. hehe Hang in there, you'll make it thru this. *hugs*

    Frozen Yogurt Anyone?

I have the TCBY frozen yogurt every once in a while. I get the nonfat no sugar added kind usually and sometimes I get the white chocolate mousse 96% fat free BUT it does have 17G of sugar for a serving so I just get one serving of it. I like to go there on 99cent waffle cone wednesdays. I just eat the yogurt and throw out the waffle cone.

    Frozen Yogurt Anyone?

If it regular frozen yogurt I would have to say nay, I would be afraid it would mess up my tummy... Have you tried Skinny Cow? Not frozen yogurt but good. Comes in a much more proportionate size. Try mushing up some Jello, and a frozen fruit bar - kinda chunky, and you can do it with popcicles too. Put it into a freezer bag, push the air out, and let it freeze...and then dump it into a blender and pulse it for about 30 seconds...chop some ice in the blender first and let it sit, and toss that (it tempers your blender so your creation does not melt immediately - pour into an also tempered glass mug or such...it make a kinda gelatto thingy, very nice in my opinion.
  9. Hello I am sorry your having issues with getting in your protein. Some ways to add protein to your diet is to add some unflavored protein to it. I have used UNJURY unfloavored powder. I added in anything I could to boost protein. Additionally look for protein water, peanut butter, ricotta cheese, Greek yogurt, eggs, nuts and beans like others have suggested. As for the vitamins if you can’t swallow them look into liquid ones. I couldn’t swallow them still can’t 8 years out. I use the chewable or liquid ones. They help a lot. Hope things get better.

Day 2 liquid diet and a Thank you

Well I can sip on water but the chewing gum I can’t do. My surgeon’s preop is very strict and he only allows yogurt and water for the three days before surgery. I’ve pretty much made it through Day 1, I have just 2 more days of this left. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
  11. I mean, zero offense, but I just don't know how you have a 400 calorie day. I just cant fathom it... I would be super curious to see what you eating? and I'm not making mockery of you, I just can't see less than 200 calories in a each meal. Sometimes, I even go over that, rarely, but still. Therefore 200 calories per meal, is minimum of 600. Unless I skip breakfast, which is never going to happen LOL. And of course I'm typing this as I'm eating carrot sticks and greek yogurt veggie dip.
  12. Hi @@Kim Smith. When your doctor says you need 150gr/protein/day; it doesn't matter how much your body is absorbing. We all need a great deal of protein each day. I probably eat about 150gr/protein/day and I'm almost 11 years out. I don't eat shakes, bars, etc. Haven't for years. Just food. That's the best way a DSer can get his/her protein in. I would be so hungry if I were doing shakes or bars to replace food. I eat every 2-3 hours (even at work). eclecticwingtips has a good idea. I cook every few Sundays: turkey burgers, inexpensive steaks, lamb chops on sale, hamburgers (80% fat). Then I freeze them and just heat them up in the microwave when I get home. I take tuna to work, or get a double meat sandwich in the cafeteria (I generally don't eat the bread, though; too filling and I don't want the carbs). I also buy a cooked roast chicken. It's isn't costly and I get 3-4 lunches out of it. I have nuts with me at all times. I keep Greek full fat yogurt (plain, I add what I want), cold cuts and cheeses in my refrigerator. I don't eat many carbs. Besides making me gain weight, I get foul smelling gas and I don't want that in public. When I do eat carbs and sugar (and I do!) it's done in the privacy of my apartment. Really, what you need to do is cut out those carbs and substitute protein. You'll feel better and lose weight. Try this: As I take classes, too; I often go to McDonald's or another ff place for a snack. I get a triple with catsup and cheese. I don't eat the bun (too filling and too many carbs) but I eat inside the bun. So I'm full, happy, satiated, don't feel deprived, etc. Also, when did you last do your bloods? You said you're not feeling well and it hasn't gotten better. You need to known your Iron, zinc, etc. As you said, you really shouldn't be giving plasma. I used to give blood 2x/year, but was told by my surgeons that ended with the DS.

    Fiber and Digestion

I put benefiber in all sorts of stuff. It's not gritty and it works like a charm. I agree with Jacqui. Our bodies need fruits and veggies. I don't want to end up with colon cancer. I also eat fiber one Cereal. Sometimes I put it in yogurt. That and Kashi cereal have very high fiber content. They are whole grain so they are considered good carbs.

    Calories

Your surgery was this month? I agree, there's no way you can get many more calories than you are already at this point. Have you tried greek yogurt or soft-boiled eggs? Cottage cheese? Just as a side note, that apple juice is not doing much for you nutritionally. Grape would give you anti-oxidants and V-8 would give you vitamin C and loads of potassium.

    Long term food plan

Ha, we are in the same boat. 2 weeks post op. One more week of full liquids. I'm hungry! I spoke to Nut today and she said to stay on track for another week and increase my protein as much as I want. i hate sf, ff stuff. I dont find it real food. Frankenfood. Only sf I do is crystal light. So, I make fresh soups and fruit infused waters and teas. ina garten's roasted tomato basil soup is awesome. Easy, puréed and strain through a fine strainer. Love it. I made this before surgery. Adding plain yogurt to bump protein and make it creamier. I made a Thai carrot soup which had peanut butter sauce in it. Amazingly! Epicurous.com has a fantastic black bean cumin jalapeño soups. This ne needed about 1 more cup of water to thin. Add a very small amount of liquid cheese (Campbell's cheese soup). Sour cream. Yummy. i make my own bone broth. No chemicals, good protein and healing collagen. Easy and cheap. I can make a gallon for about 9 bucks. I drink my protein shakes to hit my goal, then have fun. The soups are pretty low carb and fat because I'm only eating 1/2 Cup over 20-30 minutes. Good fiber also, which we need. Frankenfood had no fiber. Obviously I enjoy cooking, so I'm keeping busy tring to be creative. Hang in there.

    Vitamin and Protein Brands ???

SInce I cant eat much ,I at least get my vitamins in with my yogurt that has high protein. Also I get my vitamins from Bariativ and they come right to your door I couldn't do the chewables after about 6 weeks so they sent me the capsule .I just crush them up and put them in something.
  17. I think this is a topic that is very much dependent on our individual personalities. I did keep a food log pre-op because it was required. I hated doing it and made sure my diet was very boring and repetitive so I could easily plunk in the numbers. If someone told me to do that now, I would go stark, raving mad! An exaggeration of course, but you get the point. So what do I do? --- Remember the cardinal rule to eat Protein first and chew well (one of my few non-negotiable rules) --- Be aware of what I am eating but not obsessed by it --- Stick with the 3 meals and 3 Snacks routine which prevents grazing --- Have small bars of dark chocolate (70%) in the house-- they are good for me, 1 is a great snack and I don't want more Here is a sample of one day's food plan for me: Breakfast: 1 egg scrambled with a cheese stick in it Mid morning snack: Greek yogurt Lunch: 1-2 oz cheese Mid afternoon snack: Protein Bar Dinner: 3 oz fish and a vegetable Evening snack: dark chocolate Approximate calories= 900 Approximate Protein: 60-70 Gm
  18. I have fallen head over heels in love with yogurt! I didn't eat it pre-band, but now I eat it every day. I have tried the commercial brands, but I stick with the organic all-natural ingredients which do have a bit of fat and sugar in them. I figure that is probably better than the chemicals, corn starch, and dyes in the Dannons and Yoplaits even though those are good, too. I also like Weight Watcher yogurts. I'm really grateful for my yogurt addiction because it's PLAIN that I love. Occasionally, I will have blueberry or strawberry, but some days I think I could subsist on plain yogurt. Kelli
  19. Shelly we call cilantro coriander here, but its awfully good in a salad, mix in a good bunch with the lettuce - if you can find a Thai/Asian style dressing, its yummy - with slices of barbecued beef, bean shoots, red onion you can call it a Thai Beef Salad. I'm in Australia but I'm not big on sugar free or diet products, I dont like the taste and the thought of the chemicals in them gives me the heebies. Lately I've been eating a lot of reaaaaaaaalllllly goooooood gourmet yogurt, full fat greek style stuff with fruit, its heavenly. Really expensive too. And of course more calories than lite stuff but for a meal, with maybe a small piece of fruit its still reasonable. And tonight we had chicken burgers for dinner because for some insane reason I have had a huge craving for mango chutney lately - which we had on the burgers.

I posted this earlier today on another thread and it kindof fits here: "Last week I went to Boise to see my Grandkids. Great time and great kids but I ate like I just got off Survivor Island. Over 2 1/2 days I ate: 2 bags of chips and dip Appetizer and a plate of Pad Thai at Thai restaurant 3-4 country donuts see video! Ham sandwich and more chips 2 bowls of Cereal large bowl of frozen yogurt(various flavors) 3 pancakes smothered in syrup, two eggs, pile of hashbrowns and 4 sausages Red Robin fish and chips, 4 deep fried onion rings and a large pumpkin pie milkshake 2 helpings of lasagna 12 small snicker(Halloween size) bites I had gained 9 lbs by time I got home Monday. Every day since, I've lost weight(not fat) and I"m back down that 9 lbs. It was all Water retention. Processed foods will do it every time. January Exercise - HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

BG- Yes, veggie kabobs are awesome! You start spinning classes next week, too??? So do I!!! I can't wait!!! I'm taking two classes, though...because each are only one day a week and I think that is just not enough for me! ZZ - Yeah, I have to make the chicken just so I can torch it like HoosierPoms! LOL I have never seen whole chickens MORE on fire than in that picture!!! Hilarious! And I gotta get that book! JM - Fresh fruit is the only way to go, believe me. Canned anything is pretty much crap-o-la. Fresh, fresh, fresh...YUMMY, too! Beware the cheese in mass quantities, though! It will plug you up, girl! LOL But I just saw a cheese advertised yesterday that is supposed to aid with digestion...what an oxymoron! I can't recall the name, but it reminded me of the yogurt Activia? Dunno. I'll pay more attention next time it's on. DiBaby - Get well, girl! We miss ya! Angel - We miss you, too! Glad to see you poking your head in from time to time! How you feeling? JM and BG - Honey is yummy! There is always Stevia, too! And it's completely natural!

    Introduction :)

First off congratulations on your future banding. I was banded August 27th and am still on the liquids...here are my thoughts. Being on the liquids can be hard because I swear if I have anything that tastes like vanilla, strawberry or tomato, I am gonna hurl! I had to get creative so I could tolerate the thought of one more Protein shake. UGH! So my friends and I went to the store and got some of the following: cream of anything Soup that I could put in the blender and make more liquid, Jello, maple yogurt (by brown cow), chocolate Protein powder (to add with Peanut Butter and milk), propel, diet snapple, pudding, lentil soup (put in the blender), the usual vanilla yougurt, popsicles, crystal light, tomato soup (I cannot stand it anymore...), squash soup, lentil curry soup...I so can't wait til the puree stage next week so I can add some meat and variety to my diet. I have mixed chocolate protein powder in a light mocha frappacino and I have also used vanilla protein powder in a fruit smoothie. I honestly don't know if you are supposed to do that, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Good luck, Chris:cool2:

    Help! Calories and carbs!

Post-op, you won't be able to eat fruits for some time. Or whole grains. Your carbs will be easier to control. The colored, green, red, yellow veggies are what you should introduce first. Some dairy products, even skim milk and yogurt, will be the greatest early source of your carbs. FYI, I wasn't big on the low-low-low carbs approach. Never was my thing ever. Also FYI (you should do your own thing, but you might like to know what others have done), my calories / Protein grams looked like this: Month 1 - 500 cals, 60 grams protein Months 2 - 4 - 800 cals, 80 grams protein Months 5-6 - 1,000 cals, 90 grams protein Months 7-8 - 1,200 cals, 100 grams protein Early maintenance - 1,500 cals, 100 grams protein Maintenance today - 1,700 - 1,800 cals, 80-90 grams protein My surgical physician's assistant (who stays up on the latest, greatest WLS research) encouraged me strongly to raise my 5-6 month cals to 1,000 and my 7-8 month cals to 1,200. She said if I continued to eat only 800 cals, it would stunt my future maintenance metabolic rate. I gotta say I am so happy I can eat 1,700 - 1,800 cals and maintain (now at 135 pounds). And I'm not a gym rat or a runner either. I do walk and move a lot more, do yoga, etc.

    No pleasure at eating anymore

I don't see why you can't eat a pizza burger minus the bun. I had my surgery the same day as you and am on soft foods and have had a cheeseburger the other day with sliced tomatoes on top. It was a small burger but it was good and satisfying. I think you'd feel better if you start eating some different types of food you do take pleasure in. Why can't you have salmon, or some other soft fish? Refried beans with some sour cream, taco sauce, cheddar cheese and guacamole in it? Chili? Deli meat? Greek Yogurt? Tuna? Eggs? Applesauce? Butternut squash? Green beans? Steamed carrots? Soups? Mashed potatoes? Oatmeal? Anyway, just named some of the things I'm allowed on my plan on the soft food stage. Do any of those things appeal to you?
