    Am I rushing into plastics?

I’m scheduled for a tummy tuck, BL/BA, and arm lift January 14. I’ll be 17 months post surgery. I’m working on losing my last 10 pounds, although my surgeons (both WLS and PS) said they’re comfortable with me having surgery at my current weight. I may be rushing, but it’s what I want and need to complete the final piece of my weight loss journey. I feel like that final big investment of money, pain, and time is going to be integral to my long term success. (There are several studies that show this to be the case).

    Getting cold feet- VSG Pre-Op

Hi LandoLivie, I felt the same way, and I also, prayed, researched, etc. Just find a Dr. you are confident in. I was sleeved 10 days ago and I am fine and have no regrets. Three weeks ago I was weepy all weekend like I was ready to call it off after I had my date. I was mad at myself for gaining weight and not being able to control it myself. My reasons for pushing forward were for my future health... not sure how heavy you are... but genetics were not on my side... Lots of overweight, round apple body types in my family and lots of serious arthritis on the joints, high cholesterol and diabetes. My blood sugar had been climbing for a year and a half and I said I need this to stop before I am diabetic and have sleep apnea. So I did it for my health to live a long full life. Good luck to you...
  4. I had surgery on Sept 10, 2020. When I woke up, I expected to be in a lot of pain, but there was minimum pain! Yay! However, I am seriously exhausted! Now we wait and see what the weight does. I am at 251 this morning (9/18/2020).

    How long off work

Yes, I could always do reduced hours. I usually work 4 10 hour days, I will most likely be doing 5 - 6 hour days when I return but can do less if needed.

Approved for surgery in 1 day

woohoo!! I really like Fairlife! Congrats on the date, mine is 10/5!!! You got this!
  7. Well, it seems I've hit my first plateau. I've been fluctuating between 206-207 for close to two weeks now. Nothing has changed as far as my diet (in "phase 3" - soft/ground meat, soft veggies, most fruit, etc.) and I still have a minimal appetite. I do weigh myself at the same time every day (morning) and under the same conditions (after going to the bathroom, before eating/drinking, etc.). While I'm down 41# since my highest weight - which was in February 2020 - I'm really only down 16# since surgery on 8/19. I'm sure this is 100% normal, but I find it frustrating. I've increased walking & bike riding (can't really work out as I have terrible arthritis in my back & hips) but I'm not sure what else I can do to jump-start weight loss again. Any suggestions?

    Irritable Bowel Movements???

I am having the exact same issue. I have posted like crazy in the thread called Dumping that is trending. I am also 3 weeks out and as soon as I started purées my morning consists of cramps, chills, sweating and toilet. Sometimes 10 minS, sometimes an hour I was just screened for bacterial infection, negative, so they’re thinking lactose intolerance. What did you do to work through it? I have to be back at work on Monday and I am developing some very negative feelings about the bathroom and eating in general. Today I only got in 250 calories because I was so focus on water, Gatorade zero, and pedialyte. I’m really just hitting a mental wall. I’ve had 3 or 4 imodiums today and they don’t seem to do anything.

  10. Hello all, It's been a long time since my last post. It's good to see all of the new folks that have found their way to this forum. It was extremely helpful to me both pre & post surgery. My 2 year anniversary is right around the corner (10/8). It was one of the best decisions that I've ever made. I've lost 120+ lbs though I've been in a stall since the COVID-19 lockdowns began. It's been 9 months or so since I've had any kind of pain or dumping. At this point, I can eat just about anything though my stomach is still sensitive first thing in the morning. I can tell that my stomach has stretched some b/c I can eat more in one sitting now. I plan to try a 'reset' and then do some intermittent fasting to get back on track. I'd like to lose another 25lbs. I've said all that to say this, keep the faith, especially you newbies. I know it's hard but it's worth it and believe it or not, it does get easier. Be well and stay safe.
  11. Same thing happened to me as well. I was given a surgery date of 8/19 in July. I was nervous but it only took the insurance company a week to approve my surgery. Hoping you have the same outcome.
  12. As several people have said in different ways that people differ. We need to learn this simple truth. I was fortunate(?) that I was too large to fit on a scale. As a result, I only got a weight at each monthly follow-up. Even then, I learned the scale didn't always reflect my progress (or lack). The scale didn't know if I was eating correctly or not. If I was exercising or not. If I was happy or not. I looked at my journal to verify this: My first month, I lost 41 pounds, next 3: 20, 19, 20 pounds. The 5th month I lost 8 crumby, miserable pounds. It was confusing. I felt defeated. I was doing all the same stuff, what went wrong? I was scared (as many folks report) that my weight loss was stopping well short of goal. This was all in the 15 minutes I was waiting for the Doc. Doc looked and said "Great! Any issues? Still following plan?" I expressed all my anxiety above. I got a kind but firm talk about how scales lie. At my weight, day to day fluctuation could be dramatic. It's the trend that is important. He also expressed that tracking food, calories, carbs, exercise was a trap. Our inputs today may not influence our weight for 3-5 days. So looking at our weight change today then looking at yesterday for why is natural human boneheaded wrong attribution of cause and effect. Worry about following the plan, day in and day out, and you will find success, because success is about how you feel, not numbers on a chart or scale. He said that unfortunately, too few people listened to this and made themselves miserable. The next month my weight loss jumped back up to my 2nd highest monthly change. I didn't change a thing. I liked my Doc, Supportive and he kicked my ass when I said or did something stupid. I also know, as he knew, people are people. Tek
  13. I am 19 months post op and although my new life is wonderful in every way, I find myself a little lost sometimes as I live in a new mental reality. As a fat person, I often hid my personality, thinking that I was not as valuable as others or that I was being judged. In a group, I was withdrawn, shy, and basically tried to be invisible. I would scan a room as soon as I walked in to identify furniture I could fit into and if there were any other large people there, but I was usually the biggest in the room. Now I am a normal weight and many people in my life (like co-workers) never knew me as anything but thin. But I still find myself hiding and shrinking away from social situations, still trying to be invisible, still feeling unworthy and that I don't measure up. To others, this can come off as snooty and stand-offish. I think this is the poisonous effect of obesity. It truly does affect us on very deep levels. It's very hard to reverse decades of shame and self loathing. I was told that I was repulsive and ugly and that people (like my mom) were embarrassed by me. I am struggling to find the "new me" as a person - someone who is confident, happy, and at ease with others. I know it will take time, and I want my psyche to be as transformed as my body. I still feel like a fat caterpillar in a butterfly body. Anyone relate? For those of you down the road, how did you make the mental transformation?

    Nearly 16 years later

Well, I had that appointment with a plastic surgeon back in January and he approved the thigh lift at 100% coverage. In case anyone wants to know, I have Kaiser Permanente Northern California now... not the same insurer as when I had the GR-DS surgery in 2004. I really want the excess abdominal skin removed but that part isn't covered. The abdominal surgery will be around $9000, $1000 paid prior to scheduling. Unfortunately, this whole COVID thing canceled all of these surgeries for quite some time. Kaiser started performing elective surgeries in late July but they are rationing OR time with all of the many different surgeons. I have been waiting to hear when exactly I'll be having my surgery. On Tuesday, I got a call from the OR scheduler and I was given a surgical date. October 8, 2020; that would be 16 years and 30 weeks from the date of my weight-loss surgery. Oddly, they are telling me that having a thigh-lift/panniculectomy/tummy-tuck is an out-patient procedure. Thankfully, the surgery is performed at a hospital, so if there is any complication, I'm already at a hospital but the plan is to send me home the same day. Now that I have my surgical date, I have a video appointment with anesthesia and a physical appointment with the plastic surgeon this coming Monday. Two weeks after that, just a few days before the surgery, I have to go in for a COVID screening. I also have a physical visit with the plastic surgeon four days after surgery and one week from surgery with a nurse. I'm getting excited. I am hoping it will be much easier to find clothes that fit after surgery. My current actual waistline, going over these folds of skin, is 38" but I have to go with 42-44" or sometimes even a 46" waist in order for pants or shorts to fit over my thighs. Because my inseam is 36", it is quite difficult to find pre-hemmed pants that long enough. Apparently, pant makers think that it is either big or tall and not big AND tall. Most pant makers, even in specialty stores, stop 36" inseams at a waist size of around 36-38" and almost never at 40" or larger. Due to this, I'm hoping that I can go with pant sizes with the waist size 10" or smaller than I currently do.
  15. my BMI is on the lower end (41). My surgeon isn't requiring one for me, My date is 10/5. Good luck!

    Pre surgery diet freak out

I was lucky (-ish) that I only had to do it for 5 days prior to surgery. My only tips are - wean yourself off of caffeinated coffee because you won't be able to have it during recovery - drink Gatorade if you're allowed. It'll help give some energy and keep you from getting a headache - likewise, I drank chicken broth every day to help get something warm and to get some salt. You're essentially preventing a "keto flu" here. I was honestly surprised that I didn't have any headaches during those few days. - I had freezer meals ready for my family so that I wouldn't have to cook for them. My husband could just handle dinner easily. (Not that he's incompetent or something. He had to work and help with watching 3 kids. Me not having to cook was helpful.) Other than that, try and keep yourself distracted. I watched a lot of TV, played video games, and generally tried to not think about wanting to eat. It wasn't terrible but I definitely hated it. Day 2 was awful. Beyond that, things were easier to handle. Good luck! --- RNY 9/10/20 HW: 245 Day of surgery: 225 CW: 218

    Back and Forth, Very Nervous

Every time I got pregnant, I gained 60 and lost 30 lbs after the baby was born. Each time I thought I couldn't weigh any more than this. BMI was about 30. Then perimenopause hit. I crept up about 1-5 lbs per month. 5 years ago I was at BMI 33. Then I got a divorce, laid off, one of my kids was in and out of the hospital, and full menopause - BMI 42. Is my life going to get easier? Maybe. But I need help. Even if I could lose 10 lbs a year steadily like that I would be dead before I could even get back down to BMI 30 from one of my comorbidities. I wanted to get a sleeve gastrectomy done when I was at BMI 33 but my insurance wouldn't cover it and I couldn't afford it. I went to a few dieticians and I couldn't lose an ounce. I wished that I would have changed employers right then and there so I could have gotten one and my life would be much different now and I wouldn't be wearing 3x and 4x clothes. This blob of a body does not feel like me, it feels like an alien has grown around me. So that's a bunch of personal stuff and your life is hopefully going to be much happier than mine was but, if I were you, while your insurance covers it, I would do it. Find a reputable surgeon in a center of excellence so that you have a very low chance of something awful happening, who will have great dieticians to help you along your journey, and do it. Don't cry in your protein shakes like I am.

    Anyone for September 2020?

My surgery is tomorrow. I'm clear liquids today after a 10 day liquid protein diet. So far, so good. I am so ready for this!
  22. Not to mention, most -- if not all-- of us had to be on a clear liquid diet for a MINIMUM of one week. I doubt only eating in a 10 hour period each day is more risky than not eating AT ALL for 7+ days...
  23. actually, DS is restrictive. The DS is a sleeved stomach with a bypassed small intestine (or a lot of it is bypassed, anyway ). The sleeve at one time was just phase 1 of the DS - it wasn't a standalone surgery until recently - within the last 10 years or so.

From: https://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/taking-nicotine-test Generally, nicotine will leaves your blood within 1 to 3 days after you stop using tobacco, and cotinine will be gone after 1 to 10 days. Neither nicotine nor cotinine will be detectable in your urine after 3 to 4 days of stopping tobacco products. If you smoke menthol cigarettes or breathe in secondhand menthol smoke, cotinine may stay in your urine longer.
  25. it probably depends on the type of intermittent fasting (IF) they're talking about and how far out they are from surgery. I know some vets who do it - but they do the kind where they don't start eating until 10:00 a.m. and then stop eating at 6:00 p.m. That might be fine for people who are out a ways (but definitely not newer post-ops). The kinds of IF where people fast for a whole day or two at a time is probably a different story.
