I started talking natures bounty before surgery and now after my surgery .. Biotin 5000mcg twice a day ... Its a real tiny pill I haven't lost any hair yet ... It's only been 11days post op !!! So I figured I'll nip it in the butt

    Will I B Happy

I'm one month away from my self funded surgery in the UK. I have told some family and limited friends. I too have previously thought of myself as a failure for considering surgery and worried that others might think that too. Recently I've taken a good hard look at myself and realised I do everything to hide my weight. I want a fulfilling life and it's only myself stopping that. A TV celebrity said after her lap band surgery that the band is there to moderate her food because she can't do it herself. I feel I need this as my starting tool. With weight loss comes confidence and energy. I'm quite prepared not to be able to afford to socialise for quite a while but when I do, I'll be holding my head up high instead of hiding away at the back of a room!!

    Will This Work?

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 20, now 35. I have every symptom there is including anovulation, infertility, depression, obesity, facial hair, high blood pressure, etc. I have been on metformin for years and tae provera to induce periods. I took injectable meds and have been blessed with my twins. I had a failed lap band surgery 5 years ago cause it slipped. I have gained more weight since then and am waitlisted for WLS, not sure if I will have the sleeve or gastric bypass. I know I don't want to become diabetic (on both sides of my family) and I have never been able to loose and keep off weight.
  4. Hi. My name is steffany and this is the first time I have been to this site. I apologize if I am doing this wrong but I have to start somewhere. Im from Sun Lakes, AZ. I am working toward gastric sleeve surgery. I am currently finishing my 4 months medically supervised weight loss. Then im ready to be scheduled. I've done lots of research and I'm ready for the surgery. I have lots of support from my family and I'm excited but still a bit nervous. There is so much to learn.

    February 6th vsg surgery

My insurance required 6 month supervised WeightLoss or attempt at weight loss psych evaluation and two dietician appointments
  6. My surgeon doesn't have a recommendation for how many calories or carbs to take in. I eat sugar free and stay under 1000 calories per day but I am curious what I should be shooting for. Have any of you been told how much to take in to achieve the greatest weight loss? For the first time since surgery 3 months ago, I stayed the same in weight. I'm wondering if I need to count closer. I have lost 52lbs so far but don't want to slow down yet! Any advice is appreciated!
  7. I went to my last nutrition class. I was told by the staff that the Lap band surgery that I was thinking about having, has poor results and how Medicare doesn't like to cover for complications like port slips or erosion. So they said I should have the sleeve. Less follow up visits. the band is like a belt, hard to get it right. I tried to check with Medicare to check about the band, and got no where. I know I need to have weight loss surgery, but which surgery should I have?
  8. I'm not particularly concerned or afraid of the intestinal or malabsorptive issues as my wife has had a DS for the past six years or so and we know many DSers who are 5-15 years out, so we are very familiar with all of the issues, major and minor. My objection to the RNY, and why it was never really considered, is that it goes to all the trouble of the intestinal rerouting, and it doesn't really buy you anything positive (compared to the VSG.) All the data available indicates that the weight loss and regain characters are similar but the RNY has a lot more issues. Beyond the more common incidence of dumping (which some surgeons promote as a benefit,) it doesn't significantly malabsorb calories, particularly long term, but does malabsorb minerals due to its bypassing of the duodenum where the bulk of the minerals are absorbed (the DS only bypasses part of the duodenum, so mineral malabsorption is usually not a bad.) The construction of the stomach pouch and connection to virgin intestine means NSAIDS are a permanent no-no, and while men don't typically have the iron issues that women do, the iron malabsorption is compounded by a typical slow blood loss at the pouch/intestine junction that rarely fully heals due to the exposure of stomach acid to tissues not designed for such exposure. Overall, lots of negatives without a real benefit compared to the VSG. The DS has somewhat different issues, though generally not as severe, but provides, on average, better overall performance, particularly on the regain front. The DS costs more, from an "issue" perspective, but you get something for that added cost. You don't get your money's worth with the RNY. There are probably some individuals for whom the RNY is the appropriate choice (aside from the surgeons promoting it) but they are few and far between now that the VSG has become mainstream. The RNY is rapidly becoming obsolete.

    Lap band as a tool

have you ever been with weight watchers, or any other supervised weight loss program? if not then i recommend going. they really have a comprehensive eating regime, what i call normal. they will help you make healthier choices and realize what foods (carbs, proteins, fats) really make a difference in your health. portion sizes, healthy fats, vegetables, etc. if eating easy foods has been your habit then weight watchers may be a good place to start to educate yourself with good eating habits to help succeed with the band. g2s

    Yaaaaaaay vsg!

I always equated my band loss with how many bags of dog food it was! I was 2 big ones and a large cat food and small cat food and the hamster shavings...... all to gether!

    Trying not to be angry

Growing up I've always been heavy , my dad was brutal to me about my weight from as far back I can remember, he said horrible things to me, yet I always tried so hard to win his approval, I am still overweight but getting my surgery on March 11th. I don't speak to my father and haven't in 22 years. It's his loss.

I am so ready for this!

Not sure I understand your question as there as many ways to take it. I am 8 months post op! I am 200% sure I would do this again, but at 3 months post op I might have said oh hell no. I had issues keeping things down and was miserable for 3 months. Now I can eat just about anything I want, but with portion control. Now your mind set towards food does change in many ways. For example I not sure I will ever eat many eggs again. I threw them up trying to advance to quickly on my diet. Once you have thrown something up it is sometimes hard to eat it again. However the desires of food do not really go away. That part is all in your head. What this surgery does is limit what your stomach can take in. Your mind still thinks you can eat like before, but you learn to listen to your pouch. It is your new guide. Eat too fast and your pouch says NO, eat too much and your pouch says NO, eat the wrong thing (too much sugar) your entire body says NO. Also remember everyone is different, and you can not compare yourself to them. You will lose the weight if you stick with the program just be patient. If you want this go get it and watch your dreams come true. I just posted on the post op board that because of my weight loss I have the confidence and physicality to begin the process of being a cop. Doors and windows will open and getting the surgery is the first step. We are always here for you with and questions and struggles. Trust me I have cried while writing a struggle and the support is wonderful!
  13. It seems that the first friend might have not meant any malice but was surprised that you lost a great deal of weight. Her reaction is typical of many who are caught off guard. By saying I want the old back she probably was referring to the type of relationship she previously had with you. Some people equate dramatic weight loss with a change in personality and she for some reason might have thought that you've suddenly changed. The other friend probably wasn't mad in the literal sense but instead gave you a back handed compliment. In the end as you stated all went well.

    Banded 1/31

Hi Anne, A little delayed in responding to your post, but just saw it today. I had my surgery the day after my 66th birthday. I did great. It took me about 10 days to really feel close to normal again, but from reading a lot of the posts on here, many people much younger take that long and longer. I really think it is very individual and that had I done this at a younger age I might have bounced back a little sooner. But I really believe it was worth it. I believe that I will probably lose the weight a little more slowly than those that are younger, but that will probably be better for my skin. I am mostly excited about what the weight loss will do for my health and my ability to be active and not have to "slow down" due to my age. At least it will no longer be my weight that is holding me back.

    Weight Loss

Actually I don't know anyone who has hd a fil at 2 weeks. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I just usually hear 4-6 weeks. My doc makes everyone wait 6 weeks. Really though you should be focused on healing though and not weight loss. You will have no Fluid in your band so you probably won't have too much restriction but will most likely be on a liquid diet for a week or so. I would say 5 or 6 but you might lose nothing and that will be okay, you might lose 10 and that would be okay. Everyone is different

    New to you

I fear the same " lack of exercise ". I work 12 hour shifts and two hours of drive time makes me tired no matter how much I weigh. I'm trying to mentally prepare myself to do my best. Congrats on your loss and good luck ..thank you for your response. I guess I'm looking to see how well or even how much weight is lost in just the first month. I mean it is all liquid right ?
  18. 25 pounds is not a huge loss over two years, specially if you have a higher bmi. I am not sure it would be that much of an issue depending on what your bmi happens to be.

    My Story

As far as Protein shakes go I suggest shakes from https://pescience.com/ If you use the code HANA you get 20% off of your order. The shakes taste amazing and have 27G of protein per shake. I love the peanutbutter cup and the Cookies and cream. These will change your opinion of protein shakes. As far as protein Water goes my NUT said not to use those as a source of protein. I guess they are collagen protein and are good for hair and nails. They do not have the right type of protein to build and maintain muscle. I'm just going off what they have told me. I absolutely love my protein shakes and look forward to drinking them. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. I can't eat as late as 8. I have just had to accept that as my life now. If I am eating with others and have no choice, I either go to bed very late or prop myself up on pillows. A night time cough, as you obviously realise, is often associated with reflux and can be dangerous as we can inhale particles of food which, worst scenario, can lead to aspiration pneumonia. If you can work out ways to avoid it, you really need to do so! If it happens even when you do take care, then you need a small amount of saline out. I am paranoid about being too tight - and I ascribe the fact that I still have my band after nine years, when so many don't, at least partly to this fear! I have twice had persistent night time coughs, without even being aware of reflux, both times I had 0.1cc removed, both times thurible ms went away without any feeling of loss of restriction. Hamburger is a "take care" food for me! It is actually very textured but doesn't chew easily because it is made of small pieces! Very easy to swallow insufficiently chewed.
  21. For me, it seems to be the opposite, but I can't say why. My band was completely covered my insurance and I'm doing well, but my other countless attempts (WW, LA Weight Loss, etc) were self-pay and I failed. I think you just have to find the right fit for you. Someone has succeeded at every method out, it just never seemed to be me! Cindy

    Gallbladder

I had my gallbladder out about 6 months after my banding. It is pretty common due to the rapid weight loss. Didn't set me back at all- had my surgery on a Friday and was back in the gym by sunday
  23. Hello all! My name is Marki, and I'm a 34 year old mom to four boys - 15, 9, 6 and 2. Currently we live in Houston, TX because our 9 year old, Zak, is on the heart transplant list at Texas Children's Hospital. We are originally from El Paso, TX. I've battled weight all of my life - I can remember taking jars of baby food as my "healthy sides" to lunch in 8th grade to attempt to lose some of my chunk. I've been successful twice: 60 lbs in 2002 and 75 in 2009, but the weight has always come back and I'm forever starving. I chose to go the lapband route for 4 reasons: Quest, Zak, Sutton and MJ. My boys. I'm 265 pounds right now but I'm preaching to Zak about a healthy lifestyle - well now it is time to live it! So my resolution this year is to run with Zak as soon as he gets a heart - something he hasn't been able to do since he was 4. My EGD with True Results is scheduled on January 22nd, and my last weight loss appointment (had to do 6 months of them) is January 23rd. I'm assuming we schedule the surgery at that point... At any rate, I would love to meet some of you all - I'm scared of another surgery (including my csections, this makes #9!) but I'm more scared of not being here to help my kiddos, so away we go...!
  24. I didn't have a revision, but when I was doing the research on my surgery I ran across a few peoples posts about how they revised to the DS and their weight loss. I remember one lady was in the 350's prior to her original surgery (gastric bypass) and got down to the 190's but then gained all her weight back and so had a revision to the DS and went from the 350's down to the 180's (she got to 170's after skin removal). I was actually considering the gastric bypass surgery at the time and I just kept thinking 'what if it fails' I didn't want to go through another surgery so I chose the Loop DS as my main surgery and it's worked great for me so far. I figure by the revision comments that I had stumbled on in my research before my surgery choice that your weight loss will probably be about the same, maybe slightly less than it would be with a fresh surgery but you'll probably still likely lose 70+% of excess weight. Just might be a tiny bit slower than a first time surgery.

    Weight Loss and Sleep Apnea

Hi Pixel I am a RPSGT, I am the person that does your sleep studies and yes, you will most likely need a pressure adjustment after weight loss. Depending on how close you are to your goal weight, I suggest contacting the lab and requesting a pressure adjustment even if it is just until your goal weight is achieved. At my location we would have no problem with lowering you a few CM of H20 (pressure) and then once your at your goal have another study to see if you even need it. There is no use in getting a study done in the middle of your weight loss when you will most likely need another shortly down the road. Also there is no reason you should be not using your CPAP and compromising you overall treatment because it's at un tolerable pressure. If you have any questions or problems mail me.
